Saw the shoutboxes and couldn't help but ponder over it....

So, what is the general take on dubstep in place to place?

Being as how I'm stuck in this hellhole studying physics and microbio, and all sorts of other shit that doesn't apply to what I want to do with my life ( as well as going into debt doing it ), I don't get to get out very much. However, from some friends up in Chi, I have been introduced to it and have mixed reviews.

So what's everyone's thoughts? Fire away! smiley

tink its proper buzzin. went out to native in bristol few weekends ago to a dubstep nite and it went off a few times, but bein a reasonably new genre some of the tunes bein produced are really lame and middle of the line. but then u got the original dubstep master--skream-- zinc has grabbed him and is now on bingo. i tink its really good an fresh that people/producers are gettin new ideas and goin in a new direction.
if u wanna listen to some good dubstep, theres compilations called 'dubstep allstars' tink theres about 4 vols.

amen to that....

I aint heard much, apart from the stuff JuJu is pushing in the US right now. Thats ok, its just a really slowed down jungle kinda thing. I'm not really feeling it too much yet.

I aint heard much UK stuff. I noticed on Chemical Records it's sold in with the Grime section. I have to say that Grime is fucking shit, just a load of wannabe badboys hyperspeed rapping about how tough them and their crew are, over some joke playstation beats. With everyone trying to "rep the endz and the manz" grime ruined the garage scene here.

"me and my crew, you will get slew, you cant test, I will get vexed, fuck the girls, sell the crack..."
Check these wankers out here .

What a joke. None of them could stand up in a hiphop battle. If Dubstep really is anything to do with grime over here, I aint interested. I'd rather the stuff that JuJu is pushing, at least it's musical.

Here is a set from JuJu of all US stuff :

http://www.dubliminal.net/audio/JUJU_DubstepMix_Aug06.mp3

If you have any stuff to show me, I'm interested to see what it's like.
Post it up bruv!

First off, if you have any doubts about dubstep, go listen to Anti-War Dub by Digital Mystikz

http://www.redeyerecords1.co.uk/sounds/cat8286b.asf

Wicked, wicked tune. smiley Really nice looseness to it - could bob along to that all day. You'll hear lots of people chat up Skream's Midnight Request Line too, which is pretty much the anthem of the scene (though bordering on being played out). Check this for a different take on it from a familiar character

http://www.lilo.net/~martin/dizzeeoverrequestline.mp3

If you're seriously into checking dubstep, the best place to start is with the Dubstep Warz show from back in early 2006 (find it on http://dnb-sets.de). Gives a pretty comprehensive view of what to expect, and the show created a surge of interest in the genre. Well worth your time.

But you can't really hold a valid opinion on dubstep til you've heard - or should I say felt - it in a live setting. Heavy, heavy chest-busting bass. Crowds are generally pretty sound too, with very little of the aggro you get at dnb events these days. First night I went to was eye-opening - really felt part of something special just being there. And, refreshingly, it's not just a white thing. But it's all about the bass...fuck!

All the same, dubstep can venture into the comatose. It can find a groove no doubt but often fails to go anywhere with it. I came to dubstep from a junglist perspective, and half the time it can take quite a bit of effort to get into a tune, and then when I am starting to get into it I find there's no pay-off. Where are the breaks man? Dubstep will never displace dnb for me, but anyway it's moving in quite a different direction. Definitely potential in it. Don't sleep!

i've listened to many tunes & mixes people've recommended me...and i still can't stand a single fucking one of them. bores the life out of me honestly, & i can do that quite well on my own. if people like it, great for them, but i've got too much other music that i might actually like to explore than torture myself with that shite some more.

I'm not really that into it...I definately dont think its shit but I prefered it a few years back .. when you could put it in a set of other styles of garage too to what I'v heard recently... I would definatly check a night tho coz that is when it all makes sense...A bit like the valve sound....lol

yeah, I can see the appeal with that first track, although it lacks the energy a little. It's pretty stagnant actually. It's all a bit ploddy. As for the Skream track, it's pretty good but I wouldn't say I'd get into it, it's a very simple tune albeit better than the glut of playstation grime out there.

Dizzie Rascal is listenable, although I can't stand the scene that was created off his back, hence those kids in that link I posted above. At least Dizzy keeps his lyrical content listenable. The whole thing is a little shallow for my liking tho. I know the scene is young but I can't see myself getting into it, not when there's so much depth to jungle.

I prefer the JuJu set so far.

Big up for the links tho. lol

OJ......I can completely see what you mean by stagnant...definitely interesting stuff, and i can see where it fits with most of the stuff i've heard by far...guess i can't make a complete opinion on it till i've heard it in the proper setting...I'm trying to find the page that had most of the cuts i've previously heard to send your way...

as for them jokers on the youtube link.....how do they fit in all this? i'm still trying to piece all this together......lmao....the juju set was good stuff so far....good lookin out!smiley

I heard the jungle illuminati a couple years back was gonna slow down the tempo of jungle back to the hardcore BPM............

your witnessing it................

Joe Nice just spun here in L.A. and was just playing slowed down jungle, but the stuff is just like dnb, theres all types of sub-genres of it (2-step/jungle-dnb/dub/hip-hop/jazzy/minimal-ambient/breakcore/dark/etc.)

but yea, good stuff
I can see why a lot of dnb/jungle heads arent into it though, too slow, unless u like slow shit.....

When I first heard dubstep, there were a few tunes I thought were dope and a ton that bored the shit out of me (cheap, generic, minimal beats, the same wobbly bass sound, etc...) It actually reminded me of a beat I made on a cheap Casio back in 1999...obviously, I didn't see anything to pursue there (but I thought, "Shit, judging by some of this stuff, I could probably mix down that old 4 track tape and get that tune signed.")

I do however, think there's a lot of room for experimentation in that framework. To put my money where my mouth is, check out this demo of a tune I put on my Myspace page called "20 Paces". It started as me just experimenting with trying to do a "standard" dubstep tune for the first time, but then I found this acoustic guitar sample and pitched it down a little and it reminded me of DJ Shadow and then it all turned into this kind of dark spaghetti-western dubstep thing.

http://www.myspace.com/daylightrobber

Before anyone says anything, I'm going to be re-tooling it a little bit (making it drop sooner, tightening up the bass, getting rid of the "scream" sounds after the drop that make it a little "too" dark, etc...)

I'll vouch for that, tis a nicely made piece, whether you like dubstep or not. Check it out peeps.
I would say that the deeper you could go with this dubstep, the more it might merge towards trip-hop.
Did anyone ever have that amazing Mo-Wax series of vinyl called
"Dope on Plastic"...? Some of this dubstep kimda reminds me of it.

Fanx. While rolling out the disclaimer, I also failed to mention there's pretty much nothing in the way of mastering...I originally put it up just for one friend to hear and left it up for the time being. It's funny how jungle and trip-hop were once like two sides of the same coin, but jungle has survived and trip-hop has been all but swept under the rug. There's a lot of old trip-hop that I still like and I've got a few tracks I also need to finish that are kind of a harder trip-hop w/ elements that wouldn't be out of place in a jungle tune. I wouldn't mind hearing a little bit of that sound come back.
