Can anyone give me a hint on how to make an amen break? What drum samples should I use? How to place 'em?

Thank you!

Hmmm...... make an amen break? There is already an amen break.... you can't make it, but you can sure as hell sample it from the Winston's record. I believe it is at 1:27 in the track or 1:37, I can't remember. Sample the break and then cut the drums into individual hits and load them into an mpc, or redrum, or whatever and write out how you want them. Or you can arrange the samples within a loop... change some up and make different variations.

You can't be told how to place them... that is something that you just have to hear. It is part of your signature sound. You have listened to jungle for a while so you have a frame of reference to go by. Try to emulate artists / tracks that you REALLY like.

Thanks for reply!
That's great that someone finally replied to my post. My english is bad, so I meant producing it, not making it. I just wonder what drums are used there.. I mean it is possible to recreate it using other samples. Maybe someone can provode a little tab with correct position of drum hits in Amen? I would really appreciate it!!!

Anytime my friend! I did not realize that english was not your primary language, so I will take that into consideration when replying.

It would be pretty much impossible to actually re-create the Amen break as there are many factors that go into it. The mics that they used to record the drummer when they made the song, Amen, Brother. The placement of those mics. The force at which the drummer hit the drums. The natural swing or latency that the drummer had when recording. The acoustics in the studio where the track was recorded. The list could go on.

Before we get onto producing, what are you using. A computer with software? Hardware? etc....

say your using a reason redrum
kik on 1-3-11-17-19-27
snare on 5-8-10-13-16-21-24-26-31
hi hat on all odds

I am using both Reason and Cubase SX. I know the basics of the production, but I just have no idea of how the drum samples are placed in Amen. Thanks to vickvega for a hint! Unfortunately - I already knew this. The placement of samples that you offer sounds pretty simple, doesn't it? Or maybe I am using wrong samples smiley

I am glad that Zebo joined the discussion, because I've heard some of your tracks (@ soundclick.com) and they sound really professional! Maybe I'll manage to learn something about drums production from you. Also, if Originaljunglism is reading this topic... Dan, please, help! The drum break in your track called Goldenera sounded great! smiley

yes its a very basic pattern for an amen but from this you can try a numerous amount of combos with all types of sounds and drums to get them to fit over any sampled amen ie. dbl kick drums random snare patterns etc. sorry i couldnt be much help bro
keep fighting the amen battle

Check the breaks we have indexed here.

http://goldenerajungle.com/php-files/viewpage.php?page_id=123

(Don't recommend for use in actual production - find the source tune and sample it.)

An easy way to start slicing would be to take the straight forward Amen and divide it into 8 equal pieces. You can rearrange these pieces and roll the sequence to get a different sounding drum line. Try it again with 16 pieces, try changing the spot that you cut the sample, etc. If you're using Cubase, that would be an easy way to start messing with it.

Also - Respect to anyone who wants to help supplement this list, add aliases, or resolve inaccuracy.

Thanks to both of you for replies! Iknow how to chop breaks. Actuely, I've downloaded all available breaks from here and sliced them in Recycle. IMO - they sound pretty good! Thanks for posting them here!

But I wonder if I can recreate the drum pattern heard in the amen break with fresh drum samples (so most DnB producers do).

Respect! smiley

I'm not sure that I've heard many producers recreate an amen with other samples very often.

If they do, then they will almost certainly use another complete drumloop (kick, snare, hats etc) and rearrange it in a beat slicer to the pattern of an amen.

Using individual drum hits from different sources is not a good idea as they do not sound right when used together, if you are trying to make an amen.

Remember, a lot of tracks are made with the original amen break but the break has been pitched down and it sounds almost completely different. Plus they use a lot of processes like compression, reverb, flange etc to make the amen break sound different but it is still the same break.

I was playing with an amen earlier and came up with an example of what happens when you change it with compression, reverb, pitch etc...here is my simple example:

Here is the original break: CLICK

And here is one sped up, pitched up and down, and rearranged a little:
CLICK

Good luck friend smiley

That is the best way to go with getting that "sound" of the amen. Just use the Amen. Make sure that you are using a wave of the amen and not an mp3. It will make a HUGE difference in the sound quality.

Here is a rip of the amen break directly off of the 45.

(Copy and past the url above as the bcc code was not working)

Go to town with it!

Boomer had some great advice in his post.

If you start by getting yourself a beat slicer Pon, it should be easier than chopping the wav up and you won't have to worry about quantising so much. The beat slicer should cut it into X number of pieces, depending on the sensitivity you set it at. Then you can move the parts around and get a feel for it, and see what sounds best for you.

Big ups to Zebo for the original break, invaluable!!

If you use the break Pon it needs to be trimmed so it is ready to use.

Thanks, Dan!

I'm familiar with software such as Recycle and I use it. I just think that sampling breaks isn't good for serious production. At least, I can't consider myself as a good producer if I can't make a simple DnB beat with drum samples smiley

Thanks again for mixes you've sent me! Calibre's track called "Intro" in Soul:Ution radio mix kicks my ass!!!!!!!! Drums there are wicked! smiley

lol, believe me, most of the professionals use sampled breaks, even Calibre. They just disguise them with various processes. Often beats like the ones in liquid d&b are made from different breaks all layered on top of eachother and passed through filters. The result is a simple beat which does not get boring to the ear. Calibre is famous for being one of the best at this.

If you were to use FL Studio, you may find it easier to make a beat?
I'm not sure what to suggest with Recycle because I don't use it, but I can make liquid beats with FL Studio.

It's a shame you are not in the UK yet, when you come here it will be easier to help you! Have you found out when you are coming yet?

If you are going to use Recycle, then load up the Amen break and put a point at the beginning and end of each individual drum hit. From kick to snare to hi hat. Make sure that you have all of them and then save it into a recycle file. Go into Reason and create a dr. rex loop player and load that amen up into it. Open your sequencer and make sure you have a sequencer track for the dr. rex. Then hit "to track" on your dr. rex and it will load all of the hits into the sequencer. Then you can take and copy each individual hit and rearrange them to the pattern that you would like.

One key factor in getting a good amen lick is a BPM between 155-170 (at the very most)....To get the authenticate feel. A common feature to classic jungle as well is the use of "looping end-points" in your amen slices. This is where the amen segment plays it's duration then just a beat or
so continues to loop at the very end of the segment. Listen to guys like early Source Direct to cite examples of this or Dillinja's "Jah Know Ya Big has examples of this as well. This gives that rolling type of momentum to the rhythm.......enjoy!!!

Pon has come a long way since he posted his question!

Thanks for the reply of course. Valid point there, the amen can be cut up and looped so many different ways, a la Source Direct, or for a modern day version, Dub-One or Sum would be a good example of what you are talking about. Their amen arrangements are second to none. Ah the amen, it never gets boring!!
