I've spoken to a lot of Americans that told me that English people have a funny accent when speaking English. Is this true? Or do Americans speak English with a funny accent? Hot debate! Go ahead and spill ya beans.....

hot debate inside!! although as i've studied linguistics and such in the past, it amazes me how people anywhere are like "i don't have an accent, but man where did you get that one?"
but OJ.....certainly in different regions in england people have regional accents...hell, i had an english friend from school that told me how you could tell what side of london someone was from by their accent.....
To further drag the debate out, what is up with wisconsin, minnesota, and northern michigan people and theirs? no disrespect meant....i actually enjoy them.....but damn, being from indiana, i seriously hate the stereotype of sounding "like a hoosier"....considering how much of my life i've spent in chicago......any thoughts? takers?

Yes......I'm originally from just outside of Detroit, MI......and people used to tell me that we sound like we talk with our nose plugged........Thing is.....when you're a child, you pick up accents awfully fast. For example, I moved from place to place when I was younger. When I moved to chicago from North Kakalacka everyone said I had a southernish accent. When I moved from MI to North Carolina, everyone said I had a *yankee* accent. whatever that is. Traveling on Greyhound buses I've also met a lot of New Yorkers.....now THOSE people have accents. They can tell if you're *country* right away, or *from northern new york*. They can also tell people what part of new york they're from, i.e. - bronx, brooklyn, manhatten, just from the way the talk. Accents are an interesting subject indeed, however, as far as having a *funny* accent, who's to judge?

Yeah man, accents are strange. As far as America goes, I can tell a New Yorker, a New Jerseyer, definately a southern yankie, but I'm not sure about the rest. What about Canada?
In the UK we have north Wales accents, south Wales accents, Cornish accents, Devon accents, south of England accents, Norfolk accents, Cockney accents, Street slang accents (check the way me Shadow and Sohail chat on here), Midlands accents, Liverpudlian accents, Brummie accents, Yorkshire accents, Geordie accents, North& Southern Irish accents, and of couse Scottish accents but dont event get me started on that one! Ach haddaway an shite ye wee scunner! Help me boab! Crivvens! (Fucking odd or what)
On the whole, accents dont exist to the people that have them and everyone else has the accent. DnBparadox is quite right.
But one thing I have to clear up my American friends, is that ONLY POSH TWATS SPEEK LIKE THE QUEEN!! lol Very few Brits sound like that wrinkled old fuck and we all laugh at the Royal family! Fucking die you reptillian wankers! Heh heh.

ahh the cockney accent! canadian accents are quite interesting......i actually prefer them to ameri....errrr stateside or "yankee" accents....although OJ, in the states, there no such thing as a southern yankee....i've ran across some southern folk who'll tie you to the back of their rusty truck, drag em into the woods, and do god knows what! ...........oddly enough, in the u.s., the word yankee doesn't exist except for in the southern states, and then picks up once you get into canada......what's the origin of the "yank" term again?

God I dont know when and when not to use Yankie. In the UK all Americans are known as the Yanks, its just a nickname like Poms or Wops. No offence intended by the misuse of the word dudes! In the UK the Southern US is seen as being filled with pickup trucks and check shirts, toothless hicks and uber relaxed gun laws! lol Please correct us guys. Its probably as daft as saying that the UK is filled with red telephone boxes and Harry Potters! And fuck Austin Powers! That was made to appeal mainly to an American audience anyway by playing on stereotypes. lol! I havent seen a red phone box since the 80's. Everyone here wears pretty much the same garms as America. Such as Italian designer labels or US makes. I've got stuff like Akademiks, Mecca, Carhartt, Echo, Nike etc. The western world is a mash up of commercial bullshit installed in our mindstates. Personally I'm fed up with the old illuminati induced sheep mentality, and I'm off to Cambodia and Thailand soon. The best thing that ever came from our "culture" is fucking JUNGLE music!

lol Paradox big up yourself! But blue police boxes are Victorian, none ever existed in Britain in our lifetime! lol Doctor Who was better when it was old school but still a bit shite.. But it wasnt as good as the old Star trek with William Shatner - fucking class!
UK sweets aka candy are ok, but I'd love to munch some Twinkies or a Baby Ruth! I got some Jolly Rancher Gummies off the net (proper nice), also some Twizzlers (nasty) and some disgusting grape flavoured Kool Aid! We're all suckers for what we're not used to. lol. Send me a Taco Belle dude! I'll send you a 100% authentic roast dinner with beef and Yorkshire pudding. Heh heh

Southern Yankie? In the UK a Yankie is an American. Excuse our ignorance! Using "Yank" is like using "Limey", neither terms being true really. Send me some Milk Duds you bloody tossers!! If you're lucky I might slip a plate of bangers and mash in the post for ya! Ha ha
