Club nights like Stush, Twice as Nice, La Cosa Nostra etc were peaking in around 1997. Those clubs were pure vibes. I'm not talking speed garage pop music like 187 lockdown. More like MJ Cole, Ramsey and Fenn, M-Dubs etc With DJ's like Mikey B, Timmi Magic, E.Z, Mike "Ruffcut" Lloyd, Carl "Tuff Enuff" Brown etc. A nice alternative to jungle if you want classy ladies and happy vibes! Pure champage and Boeteng suits type vibes. Jungle was a direct influence in the music. Mostly the clubs were over 25's. Did you get any in the US? Its hard to find the tape packs over here. |

garage was pickin up around 97 but it died kinda like it should have here..
it wasnt right for the N.American scene.
dnb wasnt the norm here so it still needed to flourish.
sounds kinda lame but i like speedgarage (organ house)
over 2-step uk garage. just a matter of prefrence my friend i guess.

I like the breakbeat style of speed garage ..like shit by noodles ,groove chronicles, el b ,z bias, steve gurley ,wookie..Thats the shit you could play alongside gunman and them other 4 style tune without the heaviness dropping away...When I went to twice as nice back then they were playing all styles a bit like the jungle thing when it was fresh you would hear a tune by bukem on the same night as total science and congo natty... |

I'm with gritty. Nothing like some breakbeat style garage. There was definitely a select crowd listening to it.....but they were around. The people that were into it were usually really into it. However today.....you rarely hear a word spoken about it, and I don't think I've heard about *the returning of garage dj's* since 2002.

Well theyre all still doing their stuff its just gone back to the underground...sound mutates so fast in the uk that for people looking in from elsewhere it seems like new music forms are springing up all the time ..It aint realy like that. Its all just evolving and the different names refere to style are created by the media or largely come into use so that the music can get played and not get shut down by association of violence or street worries. |

Yeah that sound has dissolved in the UK too now. They're calling the new stuff "Grime" and its full of 50 man MC gangs and crappy simplistic Playstation2 type beats, and you have to have an AK47 to get into their raves! Not my cup of tea. I say stick to the Shadow Demon Coalition with Jungle if you want the badness. In London every street kid and their grandmother is a Grime MC. I had like 8 of them freestyling in my kitchen a year or so back, I had to tell them to shut up because there was an interesting program about fossils on the TV, heh heh If anyone has any Stush tapes to upload, that would be "swell" chaps
