Just wondering, whats the point of producing under different names. why not just stick to one. Anyone? |

So that you can release 10 records a month and fool people into thinking that they aren't buying 10 records by the same artist, as it is sometimes frowned upon when you mix together too many of the same artist's tunes.
Seeing Dillinja's name 10 times on a record order list can make a DJ not buy the records, because the DJ figures that his fellow DJ friends will clown him for mixing together too many of the same artist's tunes.
As if it's not easy to mix together different artists' tunes...
DJ's are funny.
So yeah... It's just so that they can flood the market, without flooding the market, as it were.

Also there is style...Artists try to have open free minds and want to express emselves in a farty way by doing loads of different stuff..
Punters or record buyers quite often have a facist puritanical streak and dont like it when badmanraggadon decides to make some floaty hippy shit or some loopy technoid monster therefor hes gonna need aliases like er I dunno cosmic voyager or Argon Generator shit like that..It helps to protect his integrity so his fans dont think he turned queer...
or is that bollox I dunno..
In all seriousness it helps sell records coz people know what to expect from certain names ..a good example would be Tom and Jerry and 4 Hero. |

cheers for clearing that up guys. i have also found when artists produce under a different name it is a differnt style. for example look at roni size. when he produced early stuff oner ''roni size'' it was quite ambient. then when he produced stuff under mask it was jump up. |

I heard that some artists did it to get around being contracted to a single label.

The style thing is exactly right. You will see artists produce totally different sounds under different names. Like Ray Keith produces a lot different sound than "Dark Soldier." I think the name just goes with the styles.
