I haven't spoken with him in about a month and a half, but last I was talking to him he was setting up his studio. He had acquired some new gear and was going to start up with some new tracks. He told me that he was still spinning, and that he ran a workshop that teaches younger kids to spin.
It would be good to see him playing out and about and it would be the greatest thing ever if we could get him back out in Chicago.
Try hittin' him up to see what he has going on. He is a really friendly person.

I got an email back from Dex here it is:
Hi Dean
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you but it's been a busy
Easter! Hope this email finds you well, and nice one for
supporting the cause (lol). Anyway, in answer to your question
about how and why did Jungle just disappear..! It's a bit
complicated, and I suppose you are getting it from my
perspective, but alot of it was due to all of the trouble that
started occuring at the raves! Due to the Ragga element the
music was attracting the ragga-muffin bad boys and things
would get pretty nasty at raves especially when Crack was
prevalent. Things would get worse for the scene when most
clubs in London's West End would not host nights if you
mentioned Jungle on the flyers. Little by little clubs all around
the country boycotted Jungle raves. Racism was a huge factor,
as the music attracted many black ravers, but I feel Jungle was a
responsible for bringing all races together (well at least in the
early days) so it was sad to see it fade away. It's true there were
fights in some raves, but you get bad elements in most genres.
For the good Jungle did, it's hard to understand why it faded. I
don't feel you can get that same energy from any other form of
music. I was dead against the whole Drum n Bass movement
when it came about. If you mentioned that you made Jungle it
was as though you were some kind of second class citizen, and
those that were into or produced Drum n Bass where some kind
of elitist group. I really do feel colour was a factor, especially
when the term Intelligent Jungle was banded about! I was still
calling it Jungle if it was over 160BPM!! It was all music born of
the street, and it all of a sudden went up it's own arse! Well I'm getting carried away now so I better stop (lol).
Anyway that my experience of the past. Once it disappeared
myself together with two others (Paul Brown and Jon stewart)
decided to put some soul and funk into the scene by starting
Solid State. I still had the urge to make Jungle so made a few
Dubplate Specials of myself and another DJ called Devious D.
But thankfully Jungle still lives on. There are many people
holding Old Skool nights and some of the music today has
Jungle at it's roots. I have no objections to Drum'n'Bass as long
as it still has a vibe and it not just a hash of loud noise and rapid
beats.
It must be that I getting old now (lol). Anyway I hope that helps
a little. Keep supporting the scene and it shall live on..!
All the best
Dex

That was a really interesting read, thanks! I wouldn't mind asking him some old skool questions myself. |
