RAW
MACHETE
CRS?
Josh Swissman
Deacon
Hive
Straight westcoastin jungle business right here!
Damn I love this site... this is the ish that inspired me and got me into dnb 9 years ago. Jungle has evolved so much snce then : the sound, venues, promos, media, comercialism, dnb vs jungle as the reference term. Today's SOCAL scene is more vibrant then ever and has made an undeniable impact on the dnb community at large due to the SOCAL/LA pioneers that pushed this sound and this movement since day one such as RAW, MACHETE, CRS?, DEACON to name a few.
In my opinion you can not understand SOCAL/LA dnb without knowing it's history. We have our own sound and style, which is a direct depiction of our culture. Our djs got mad skills ...can scratch, we got bboys and poppers reppin, top notch encees and producers. Peep Machete's 'cuttin mixtape for a taste of what LA dnb's roots are all about.

It always gets me how we are blind to your scenes in America. It seems you have strong scenes in parts of the US, but we never heard about them here. Those guys you mention are not known as pioneers in the jungle scene. If they were pushing the sound in the US back in the beginning then it's a shame that they are not acknowledged in the jungle scene. They are unknown in the UK. How come? Surely they should get the same credit as Grooverider and the gang if they were pioneers too?
Just out of interest, what sound is coming out of LA?

Yea....it's pretty crazy how stateside jungle dj's didn't seem to crossover the big pond in the 90's......although there were like 4-5 raves a week in the Midwest, so I guess people were alway's booked full up........glad they were too!
But per the original question of reppin n local scenes.....i'm from Milwaukee.....so being north of Chicago n in the land of Massive n Drop bass, i've been in a nice spot.....regularly seeing 3D & Snuggles, Snuggles & Slak, Johnsin, JJ Jellybean, Phantom 45, Danny The Wildchild, Dr Groo, Casper, Time Stretch, Delinquent, n on n on n on...

So R.A.W. and Curious are listed, but no APX-1... how I miss the 3X6's with MC ?. I'm not from LA but grew up in AZ. Can you guys point me in the direction of some Deacon mixes. There is one I had as a punk kid that I've been craving, but broke years ago. And can't seem to remember the name of it.

I have a few deacon tapes... The one I lost was my fav, at the time. IN ONE EAR AND RIGHT OUT YOUR MOTHER, I believe. There was also Beautiful Stories of Ugly Children or some shit. A few others I'd have to dig up. I'll try and get em online sometime soon.
***EDIT*** Found this, but... http://deacon1.com/mixes/

I haven't looked at that site in a while... There are several cds they have that I want pretty bad, but I want Decoder's "Concussion" album the most and can't find it anywhere. I found it on vinyl for $150 or so. I'd love to get it, but I don't have that kind of loot.

I think this is where Johnsin needs to chime in and tell about our rather peculiar morning on tour in the summer of 2002 rolling around LA (i vaguely remember the scientology compound at 5 AM) in PURE ACID KEN's mustang or sebring convertible, out of our skulls on hells angel glass as we after-party hopped following our "gig" with Baseck/Minion and the darkmattersoundsystem.
Anyways...I somehow conned K-K-K-Ken out of his Pure Acid baseball cap. (good speed always makes me verbally persuasive [read, annoying]) I gave the hat to doormouse's sister the next day in San Francisco because she's such a hot cougar.
p.s. John kept a straight face when i told dan i had to kiss ken on the lips for the hat. shhhhhhhhhhhhhh. |
