Although I have found "some" new school ragga jungle that I like, I feel that it the vast majority does not even come close to touching the old school sound.

especially that mash-up... shit is garbage noise.. id rather listen to "Nitrous" mixed in "the nine" mixed into "Nasty Ways" again and again. Some soundmurderer, 16aj, etc are horrible

I feel you about some of that mash up gone wild. It gets to the point where it is just way too mashed just to be way too mashed and takes away from the vibe. But I suppose "some" people dig it that way.... meh.

I'd rather listen to a scratch routine containing "Twist 'Em Out" mixed with "We Built This City on Rock and Roll" |

old school jus has that perfect combination...
Its riddim or bass led rather than drum led but the drums are loose.. Its a real clash vibe.. old school has equal input in terms of producers and ravers from both black and white people.. new school dont .The mash up vibe while I like it focuses on amen to the extreme and has strong influence rythmically from metal and also from people like squarepusher and vibert who are real clever but neva part of jungle coz thier shit is not really about the dance.. If you listen to an old school set you can hear that the amen is used as a tool to hype the rave into mayhem between looped rollers and steppy drops and creats the diversity in tunes that you dont hear so much any more.. Most important in my view is the lack of a real half speed groove in most new jungle/D&B...Old school has a (big word) duality which is seperate but at the same time one... frenetic shit goin off every where but a rock solid center...bleh...ramble er ..yeh..so er ..Hey!! a dancing banana

yeah Gritty - the fact that it used to be rave music is a big part of it. the biggest thing though is this - - - (in my opinion)
- - - original jungle was influenced by reggae, dub, house, acid, techno, soul, funk, jazz, blues, etc... the north american jungle sound of today is influenced by jungle istelf. instead of taking 5 elements and creating a new thing - it's simply an old thing re-hashed. i honestly think some of these people are playing it off like --- they intend to make real sounding jungle - fail - and then claim that their failure is just "their style" or "their new thing"...
also --- mashing up an amen is not like playing a guitar. it's static - stationary. you fuck up and re-do it... so to sit and fuck up an amen as much as possible takes little more than time and patience. making shit that makes your ass move is a different story.
a fucked up amen with a rock and roll sample is typically pretty linear -- moving straight forward in 2 dimensions. what makes real jungle is each sound element yanking the others back and forth, left and right, up and down, in and out and 'round and 'round. not seeing how you can flip around a beat over a five-minute-long sample.
which brings up my next point --- has anyone noticed that losts of these new tunes are entire songs with beats that fit over them? man, take "the license" for example - that shit is one buju line looped over to create and entirely new rhythm... using an entire song for the basis of your remix is bascially like using tracing paper to me. the arrangement is usually this --- 1. 2 minutes of an untouched reggae song for an intro 2. a drop directly into a b-line or amen with a run of the mill clash sample (how many champions of champions do we have now? over 50,000 i think - everyone is the #1 sound man, i guess) and 3. let your beats and their song run for 6 minutes.
also - - - in 1993 no one had a desktop computer with any of 10 easily downloaded programs. if you wanted to write a tune - you went and saw a motherfuckin' professional engineer - Mark X; Nookie; 4 Hero - - you know, the "staples"... now anyone who has a computer can not only write tunes, but shit, start up your own label. that's def. spreading talent a little too thin.
the fact that the name hasn't been changed kinda bothers me too. at least leave "ragga jungle" alone! it's misleading - call it "amen reggae" or something. you search for ragga jungle and get remarc mixed with an amen version of a Black Sabbath song as your results. and don't even get me started on the heavy metal shit.
the absolute biggest deal for me though, is the constant remixing of old jungle tunes. YOU MUST understand that a tune like "salute the king" is hot not only because of the dope programming, but because of the CONCEPT!!! or take "Black" - - is there anyone who doesn't like that tune because the beats aren't mashed enough for you? what about "the terrorist"? it was the CONCEPT of these tunes - they did something NEW. i'll bet you my entire record collection that i can take any track you give me and make it more complicated than it was originally - - fuck yeah, "The Burial" is a little too simple for me.
i've seen remixes of "mash dem down"; "babylon"; "Black"; "The terrorist"; "renegade snares"; and 20 remixes of "RIP" (the barnyard one is DOPE, i'll admit) - - i made a slightly wise-assed comment to one of these guys one time and this was the sarcastic response i got from one of his supporters --
"oh yeah, his shit is sooo wack. he's obviously just biting other people's style."
i couldn't agree more. in fact, it isn't even biting another style - it's just calling the old one your own. man, if that's what programming means to you - you might as well just play a computer game instead.
i might sound like an asshole - but it's basically this very topic that inspired us to open this site in the first place.
this is Hook by the way - don't go yelling at all GEJ crew over my opinions.

i know what you mean - i don't post until it finally explodes into something like what you see above
i know there are good tunes Gritty, there must be. i hear you about digging too. man, i'll check out your sets of any type because i know your taste is tops - and i'm not hating on all n. american jungle. General Malice, for one, deserves all the respect he gets in my opinion. that is his style 100% (which lots of people are already copying) Zebo makes real jungle tunes. check out RAW's new tunes - that's some crazy shit! there's lots more - i know that i'm not trying especially hard to find it - but i shouldn't have to weed thru 50 tunes to find a decent one. i swear that every time i give it a chance - it's no good.
i'd say that Mrs. Gritty is right on the mark - you're very jungle wise people... i'm sure i seem very close-minded to you
by the way, we need a regular smiley back. i'm all about the banana, but it doesn't really represent the type of happiness i'm going for here.
okay - this is Hook again. i need to learn to log in / out
