Hi!
I have a problem - I can't get the correct sound out of Reason's synthesisers! It drives me crazy! I rotate all these knobs for hours, trying to get something that sounds natural and all I get is only stupid electronic bleeps! Does anyone around here know, how to produce that light, natural sound like that one (If it's not a secret, of course):

Thank you! |

Wait. As far as I'm concerned, Distortion makes things sound more electronic. I need more natural sounds. Very good example is to place Malstrom synth, in the OSC1 box, choose something from Voice. I.e. Angel Choir. BUT - it's pre-sampled grain for malstrom! How to generate similiar sounds? |

Dude, scream 4 is not just crappy distortion. There are bass patches for 1...for 2 if u mess around with it u can get some nice feel to ur bass without the limited patches. The equalizer doesn't hurt either.

Thanks man! I found some really good patches! Now, I've added deepness to simple sine bass! But, I still can't get that cool pad like in "PHD&The Funky Technicians-Above And Beyond"

Use some decent plugin synths in another program? Reason can make it too easy with its banks of ready made jungle breaks, so if you're planning to release any tracks, remember that those in the industry know that. It might be a disadvantage. I heard an interview with Goldie a while ago and he was pointing out "Reason kids" as being a dime a dozen. To make decent bass, make a sine wave and put it through some effects, or use vst plugin synths like Novation BassStation or Absynth...

Use Cubase, rewire reason. Load up Z3ta VST and Bass station... maybe Claw... OR use NN-XT and get some really nice sample sets (Or sample someones Hardware if you have access) |

Relax. That pad (not bass, I was wrong) was produced by additive synthesis. It can be a real pain in the ass if you are trying to make your own additive synth in Reaktor, but I'm slowly making it. You can use SubHarmonic synth instead of making your own. It has a lot of pretty presets in it!

If you're stuck with reason for making bass, don't use the malestrom. I personally hate the malestrom for bass. The "amazon bass" is alright, but even with "exotic" refill bass patches, to me, it doesn't cut it. I use the sampler and find a deep, long bass drum kick, sine bass sample, or you can sample different basses in current tunes you like and load them up. To me the malestrom is too shallow/flat sounding, and there are infinite samples for the NN-XT that produce a nice low sine wave. Just look for them. Oh, and don't forget to add a bass shelfed EQ to the instrument to boost bass. If you want a dred/distorted sound, don't use the scream. Add the higher pitched buzz sounding patch that you want, to the sine bass patch in the sample. Then tweak the envelopes and lfo's for both patches to get an integrated bass sound that you want. It's alot of fucking around, but it's worth it, to me. Plug-ins are also great for making bass, and probably the better/easier way to go. |

or....
Here's kind of an old but classic technique to make hard dirty Dillinja-esque bass.
Sample an 808 kick. Run that thru compression and distortion. Add higher frequencies on top as needed. Stir, shake, Boom! Instant Dillinja bass....,
Now as far as your pads problem.....that may take a while....
