I seen that thread about a stance on Dubstep and people on all different jungle boards talking about it as a new thing... Well here I am again to say it aint new..haha...
Its a new term for a style thats been around and evolving since UK garage got going...Much like jungle ..The music evolves and splits..Nothing to do with the producers.. more the punters that come to it as the sound distills and moves bringing their prejudices and rules and boundries that defines the style into something that floats their boat or drives em away..Hence all the pigeonholing that allways seem to perpetrate against the wishes of the innovators who actually make the music in the first place..
Anyway I got a shed load of garage from 95 to 2002 or so an here is a little dubstep mix that nicely follows part of the evolution of this style of garage....enjoy ..or not. only 30 mins.. Fair few old skool jungle people involved in these tunes..

this mix is absolutely fucking sick... this is exactly the type of stuff i've been looking for, should have known to ask you GRITTY. i was excited when i saw the UK garage thread, but it turned out that those mixes sounded just like house you know. Casper - true-pro dj from Chicago released a tape like this in 98 or 99 and it knocked me on my ass like nothing since jungle (not as substantially as jungle tho - but nearly)... there was 3 months of hype about UK garage in Chicago. i used to call up the dubshack info line just to hear scott dubshack shout next weeks info over "i feel good, good, good" from the previous week's set from Casper.
ironically casper's Heavyweight Sound mix was being ripped as my tape deck died. it's one of my favorite mixes of all time - 2 tracks on it that i don't really like tho... 1 about "i don't smoke a pipe pipe pipe pipe pipe" and a remix of Poison by BellBivcanBlowme.
Gritty - you should make a part 2 of this mix for a full CD... yeah???

are there more tunes out there like the intro tune? i've never heard 'garage' like that - man that's sweet... slow slow jungle.
how hard are these tunes (esp. tracks 1-8 style) to find? |

Cheers Gritty, oh ye of knowledge!
I'm familiar with a few of those tracks off your mix, I used to hear them mixed in with other garage tracks on those Stush tapes I've been on about.
Is dubby UK garage really a whole sub-genre? I wasn't aware of that! lol
You're right Hook, that first track is very old school sounding, it reminds me of the time when the breaks driven rave broke away from the 4/4 kickdrum stuff and became jungle, almost identical to the sound of that era in fact.
Good stuff Gritty, each an every time rudeboy!

nice...
so what would you call the type of music that tunes 1-8 are? i'm not trying to open up another discussion about how beats are beats and we don't need to label styles, etc... but when i go out looking for vinyl it helps to know what i'm looking for is it dubstep? grime? garage? 2-step?
can anyone upload some more sets like this? i'm checking the garage thread now - grabbed most of them, but they sound mostly like house as opposed to this style |

what the hell is wrong with mediafire? i really wanna hear this mix, but mediafire won''t load. it's just sitting there blank making lightning fast requests from media.fastclick.net or com....
i've tried blocking content from fastclick, but mediafire still won't let me get this file.
edit--i got it by opening the link in internet explorer, i was using firefox.

They would just be in the UK garage/2 step section.. Terms like grime and dubstep only really start coming in after 2000 as far as I know and you will notice production becoming more minimmal ,less beats in almost dancehall pattern stuff like that... I got sum other bits I can upload... |

im new to this website and jungle, yet ive been raised on garage. check barefiles.com for all your needs.
In relation to the feel i get from this mix, I would recommend this set:
http://www.dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=13567
(first link wont work but its been re-upped further down the posts)
I particularly like the second half of the set mixed by el-b. Definately a percy. Safe. |

Just had to say I think Horsepower Productions are hugely under-rated. They (and a couple others...Rockers Hi-Fi comes to mind) were doing dubstep before anyone called it that. |

hey this has resurfaced...daylightrobber horsepower stuff at that time had a lot to do with nico and those tunes were put out by turn u on (no u turn).. Thats my point really dubstep is just another whack name that comes up when a sound really gets concrete and sort of pureist..As I say dubstep was produced in garage from day 1 and if u take any dance music genre u will find a whole section of it produced as dubwize.. could be techno, house, jungle ,garage,whateva..I got good exsamples of all of em.. love my dub ... |
