Welcome to issue number 1 of 1000 words. The purpose of this magazine is to document Chicago's Techno/House music scene with a camera and computer. The Techno/House music scene is making its mark on youth culture throughout the world. It influences every aspect of our lives, the music we buy, the clothes we wear, and even the way we treat one another. Underground culture sets the standard for what is fresh and hip. Clothing designers such as Donna Karan and Betsey Johnson get many of their ideas from the club scene. Major companies like Minute Maid and Coca-Cola use images and concepts of the underground to sell their products. (Just look at Fruitopia's ad campaign.) Rave culture has exploded all over the planet in the last five years. Techno /House music is worshipped by millions in major cities throughout Europe and America. We feel that documenting dance culture primarily with photographs is a very powerful method of journalism. As the saying goes, "a picture is worth a thousand words." Try to think of 1000 words as our community photo-album. The staff of 1000 words is comprised of Chicago niteclub enthusiasts who all share the same love and respect for the Techno/House movement. So far the staff is pretty small, a graphic designer, a few photographers, and an advertising dude. Because of the small staff it's not possible right now to cover every event. If a party or club doesn't get featured in a particular issue chances are it was our lack of man-power rather than some secret political agenda. Don't take it personally. We would like to use this magazine to showcase design and photography skills as well as document the club scene. If anyone would like to become involved please call our voicemail at 312.604.1708. We're looking for photographers, graphic designers and advertising people. We would also like to publish photographs taken by readers. Any contributions or letters can be sent to 1000 Words 5845 Huron Berkeley IL 60163. (Anything sent to us becomes our property; that's the way it works.) Enjoy! Chad Sommer Editor in Chief.

MAYDAY The Mayday Raves in Germany are the largest indoor Techno/House Events in the world. Mayday 6 "Rave Olympia" united more than 25,000 ravers at a single event, making it the largest indoor rave ever. The crowd and staff come from all over the globe. DJ Mike Dearborn of Chicago was a member of Mayday 7's elite DJ line-up. Film loops for the Mayday events are provided by Brad Baker and Bobby Fresh of the L.A. based company, X-FX. The sound system for Mayday 7 was an EV MT 4 Doublebass system with 1,200 single speakers with a total power consumption of 500,000 watts. The lightshow was comprised of sixty Vari*Lites, six multicolor lasers connected to animation computers operating in 3D, and twelve Digital High Power Strobes developed especially for Mayday as the latest of their kind. The Mayday events are dedicated to a world of fun, happiness, energy, creativity, innovation, tolerance, peace, open minds and love: THE RAVING SOCIETY.
