INTRODUCTION Welcome to our seventh issue & as you can see we've got a new improved look! The cover has been expertly designed by Damon & we have several new articles in this issue. Over the next few months we will be making the magazine better for you, our readers! We will be keeping our magazine original to its unique style as originality is the key & we are sure you – the readers – understand & respect that. Unfortunately some magazines do not understand the importance of being original & are copying some of our ideas which is very flattering, as most of these magazines have been established a lot longer than we have. People read magazines because they find the articles interesting, informative & above all amusing, so we will continue to write on a level that you understand & appreciate. Below is a chart which shows you how far we have expanded in 6 months. • LEEDS • BIRMINGHAM • CARDIFF • LONDON • EXETER • SOUTHAMPTON Present Coverage is 60% If you are in any of the above areas on the map & you don't already stock The Scene! Call us now on (01344) 761139 or (0973) 253616 to be entered on our list of stockists. In our last issue we featured a list of promoters who we mentioned (in our opinion) done an excellent job throughout 1994 & we did miss a few (sorry!!). But for our readers benefit the following promoters should of also been on the list: Jungle Fever, Ravealation, Orange, Life & Utopia, Teenrage, Telepathy, Evolution, Roast, Dance With Feeling, Rude, Full Money & Jungle Splash. Take care of yourseves until next time. The Editor. CONGRATULATIONS TO JOSH (THE MIDWIFE) ON THE BIRTH OF HIS DAUGHTER! THE SCENE MAGAZINE

A Step Back In Time Ambition Productions When two attractive ladies offered us a night out in the West End who were we to turn them down. We were wisked down to Equinox in Leicester Square, where "A Step Back In Time" was in full swing. Not so long ago a group of friends had an ambition to stage an event that would awaken happy memories of the "the classic year of '91". That ambition became a reality in the form of a New Years Day '91 Special. As we arrived at the door, we were greeted by the Equinox security team, who were up to their usual high standard, keep up the good work! As we entered the arena we were greeted by a snow storm! Honestly! They had installed a snow machine which was in full affect, as promised "Ambition Productions" had taken us back to an ice age realm. The blizzard had in no way affected the DJ's from playing some of the finest tracks of '91. We were captivated all night by the excellent record collections of Rob Blake, Younghead, Mathew B, Phantasy, Devious D, The Lovely DJ Rap (who warmed up my winters night) and Top Buzz. In my opinion a well thoughtout line-up. Whilst we were "having it" on the dance floor, we met some of the nicest friendliest people in London. All there for the same reason, to have a good time, and to coin an old phrase, "a good time was had by all". After having a seriously good night out, I couldn't have finished an excellent year and started a new one in a better way. A big thank you to Della and Ayleen, for an extremely enjoyable night out, and for looking after us so well. See you at the next one. THE SCENE MAGAZINES OPINION Venue (90%) DJ's, MC's & Sound System (85%) Atmosphere & Crowd (70%) Security (80%) Lighting & Production (75%) For their first event an excellent party. The music policy was exactly as it was stated on the flyer & all the DJ's turned up! The actual turnout could have been better but promoters do have to build a reputation up before they can turn away hundreds of people! Watch out for there next event coming soon. Overall rating 80% good. Review: Royston THE SCENE MAGAZINE

Interview
the SCENE interview by: Ade Some may say it's dead and dark in Gravesend..... but we took a trip down the A2 through Kent and found a man who is definitely the light behind many of the rave flyers we see today. Here is the behind the scene interview with Damon - artist extraordinaire SCENE: What is your full name and age? DAMON: Damon Kroonsberg, my father's Dutch, hence the name and i am 25 years old in March. SCENE: How long have you been designing flyers professionally? DAMON: Professionally.....about a year, but my first flyer was for Biology in 1990. SCENE: How did you get into designing flyers? DAMON: Through a good friend of mine called - Budgie, a lot of people out there know him. He probably knows half the promoters up and down the country, and he got me my 'foot in the door'. SCENE: For which promoters have you designed flyers? DAMON: Desert Storm, A.W.O.L., Roast, Thunder & Joy, V.I.P., Stush, Telepathy, World Dance, One Nation, Desire to name but a few. All in all there's about 30 clients on our list at the moment. SCENE: What do you consider to be the best flyer that you have designed? DAMON: Definitely the one at the right of the page - 'Desert Storm' at the Sanctuary. SCENE: Do promoter's tell you what they want or do they leave it to you? DAMON: It's a bit of both, some just let me get on with it and some like to take a lot of interest (Jay), taking part in the actual design of it. SCENE: What were you doing before designing flyers? DAMON: I was working for a publisher who went swimming one day and never came back (readers can you name this man?) and no i didn't loose any pension money, we used the Apple Mac system doing boring trade magazines. Designing flyers just started as a little work on the side, it grew and grew until i was virtually running my own company as well. However i eventually had to leave - not through my own choice. SCENE: I understand that you'll be opening your new office soon, can you shed some more light on that? DAMON: Yes, after talking to a few people, a group of us decided it was time to set up something permanent, on a much more professional basis for the industry as a whole - which has resulted in us moving into the City at the end of January. SCENE: Where will you be based exactly? DAMON: It'll be right next door to the World Dance offices in Luke St, behind Liverpool Street station. SCENE: Was it hard to get recognition from promoters? DAMON: No not at all, after the first set of Desert Storm flyers inquires came flooding in and it's been mayhem ever since. I think the difference was mixing the old style illustrations with the Apple Mac, which added another dimension. SCENE: Have you ever done anything for anyone abroad ? DAMON: No, but we've got a couple of things lined up for this year already. SCENE: Why do you think that you have been so successful? DAMON: Being in the right place at the right time! SCENE: Have you designed anything other than flyers? DAMON: Yes, we design merchandising (Desert Storm, N.A.S.A., World Dance, A.W.O.L.), we design brochures, catalogues, record covers, CD covers, posters, record labels, basically anything with a design/illustration element we can handle. We are currently working on a couple of projects for television as well. SCENE: Have you ever done anything for shops? DAMON: Yes, we've designed shop logos, we have done murals inside shops including some graffiti in Mickey Finn's shop in Gravesend (Biting Back Records). SCENE: You used to be a graffiti artist as well then? DAMON: Yes, i was bang into Hip-Hop when it first came over here, doing a 'piece' on a wall back then was such a buzz, i'm sure there's many ex-graffiti artist's out there who know what i mean! SCENE: How long does it normally take to complete an item? DAMON: For flyers - an average of about 6 hours, depending on the client and what's involved. SCENE: So is this work what you do full time? DAMON: Yes, this is going to be an established Design Consultants in 1995. Whenever i have spoken to people about work, wether they are new on the scene or not, the majority of people don't know where to get their 'repro' or 'print' done, we will offer a service where they can come into the office with an idea in their head, see it being created on screen and collect it at the end of the day finished in it's full glory. SCENE: Do you have anything funny you can tell us? DAMON: 'Johnny Damage' - he's well funny - and Arsenal football club - they're a constant joke. SCENE: Finally any shouts...... PAULA xx, OUR FAMILY'S, BUDGIE, DARREN, MICKEY, RON, JAY, CHRIS, DAZ, JARVIS, DONNA, CARL, ROAST, T+J, MITCH, JULIAN JULES + TINA, YOMI, DAVE (the hippy), ROARSHARK, ANDY (fix my f***ing video), CHUGGY (where-ever you are?) and last but by no means least...... On The Jungle Tip by Devious D Welcome to my new column which is monthly & I will be filling you in on the current Jungle scene. On my recent travels around the country playing at various raves and clubs I was impressed by this one place in Bristol called the Trinity Hall. On the night of the 28th the "Jungle Magic" crew Sam & Co. had this venue packed with not only Junglist ravers from BRISTOL but a good few faces who travelled down from London. Those who went would have witnessed the good production, organisation stunning sound system and electrifying atmosphere. JUNGLE MAGIC CREW 10/10 (ps Where's my T-Shirt). Also not forgetting other productions that were just as good include, THE HARDER THEY COME (Bridge Pk), PURE X (Milton Keynes), CONCRETE JUNGLE (Peckham Lazerdrome) and watch out for club jungle in Sittingbourne which is now firing on all cylinders every Friday until 8am, with DJ's DARREN JAY, KENNY KEN, HYPE, NICKY BLACKMARKET, MICKY FINN, ELLIS DEE, TIMMI MAGIC and MYSELF. On a lower note – Why do promoters put DJ's names on flyers while having no intention of booking them? Personal message – Duncan next time you try to drink me under the table I won't be carrying you home again! Interview
DJ Ellis D – Interview While driving through the sunny parts of East London we heard a bass line then a drum then a bass, so being the inquisitive type – we investigated. Sitting behind an array of expensive studio equipment was none other than the 'Captain' himself, a DJ of expert style and a scientist of mixology. That DJ was Ellis D, and sitting outside his house was a 'Stoosh Burger' (read on folks, it gets better). Here's what he had to say! Scene: What is your real name and age? Ellis D: My name is Roy Collins, and I am thirty (oh gosh!). Scene: How long have you been a DJ? Ellis D: Well I have been a DJ since I was a kid really, but I've been a professional DJ since 1987. Scene: How did you get into DJ'ing? Ellis D: I was in to sound clash's at the age of 15, doing peoples parties. When all the acid scene started, we had a place over at The Elephant and Castle where we held our own parties. Really things just took off from there. That was called 'The Rave at the Cave'. That lasted for about 6 months, then the old bill raided it. Scene: Have you made any records of your own? Ellis D: Oh yeah, blimey there's loads of them. The first record that I made on my own was a little thing called 'The Ellis D Project', that was about three years ago. Just before that we had started 'Rhythm Section'. In those days I didn't actually know how to make music and I met with the other blokes that were part of the group, I showed them which direction to channel the music and in return they taught me how to make music. Me and Swan-E have got a record label at The Moment called 'Collusion', and there is also a new label coming soon called 'Interlect'. Scene: What are Rhythm Section doing at present? Ellis D: We have split up now, and have not done anything for about two years. There was originally four of us, then one went off to do House music. It was then difficult to do music with the three of us that were left. Me and Renny P (who originally started Rhythm Section) are now doing something called 'Rhythm Solution', its like a Break Beat House thing, but as far as Rhythm Section go, no, we've disbanded. Scene: Where do you buy your records? Ellis D: I get them all over the place, a main place is a shop called Wired For Sound. Scene: What different styles of music do you play? Ellis D: I do play House, but not the kick drum and snare sort of House, more of a breakbeat style that is lively. That's the style of music we make on 'Rhythm Solution'. Apart from that I play Drum and Bass, that sometimes touches on the Jungle tip. Scene: How often do you play out a week? Ellis D: I get the occasional Thursday or Monday, but on weekends, normally 4 to 6 gigs. Scene: What other DJ's do you rate on the scene at the moment? Ellis D: All of them really, to be honest. They are all doing a good job. The professional one's certainly and there are load's of good up and coming DJ's out there to. Scene: What do you think of the current Hardcore and Jungle scene? Ellis D: I do like the Drum and Bass rather than the real Ragga Jungle side of things. I used to be into the happier sort of stuff but it's got a bit too cheesy now. It just doesn't sound like there is much credibility in it. Scene: Why do you think you have been a successful DJ? Ellis D: I don't know really, er, er, er, maybe down to the tunes that I play. I think the sort of set I play, there is a bit in it for everyone, it's not too heavy on the Ragga tip or too cheesy on the Happy tip. Scene: Being the Captain, what advice can you give to up and coming DJ's? (At this point Ellis gets the giggles, there must be some private joke about 'The Captain'). Erm, keep trying, if you want to become a DJ, you must keep trying, you must try to get in touch with promoters, it's hard but it's the only way. Plus you must try to do something different that will get you recognition. Remember hard work and perseverance. Scene: Where have you played abroad? Ellis D: Switzerland, Canada twice, Florida, Germany and France. Scene: What is your most favourite club or event you have played? Ellis D: I think the most memorable one is Fantazia at Matchams Park, Bournemouth. I done 7-8am in summer and the sun had just come up. Where the DJ was playing was 60ft in the air. I had my sunglasses on, and to see everyone still dancing at that time was a real buzz you know. That one really sticks in my mind. Scene: What is your opinion of MC's & do you have any favourites? Ellis D: I do yeah! GQ, MC MC, Vibes, Conrad, MC Juiceman from Milwaukees (look out for him). I do like an MC who does his job well, like not talking over a DJ when he is right in a mix. They should know when to talk and when to shut up, but no, I don't mind MC's so long as they do their job right.

Interview
Scene: Where does the name 'Ellis D' come from? Ellis D: Originally, when I was looking for a name it was acid music at the time. The name seemed fitting. Scene: Have you ever put on events of your own? Ellis D: Yes, at Elephant and Castle. Scene: What has been the funniest moment you have had? Ellis D: One of the funny moments was 8 turbo boy's giving me The Captain salute at World Dance & bowing in front of the decks, but the thing that sticks in my head was the time that we were playing in Scotland. DJ Seduction was with us and we had just arrived back at our hotel at six in the morning after the rave. Everyone was still in the party mood and still buzzing so we decided to go down by the swimming pool, where Seduction, promptly fell asleep on a sunbed in shorts. He had been there for two hours, so I got a bucket, filled it up and threw it straight over DJ Seduction and the reaction I got was the funniest sight I've seen (sorry John, but you did look funny with a bucket on your head!) Scene: What radio work have you done? Ellis D: I used to do Sunrise in 1988 for about 2 years. Now I am going to start a radio show in Canada, but it is going to be taped here and then sent over to Canada to be broadcast. Scene: Would you share any embarrassing moments with us? Ellis D: Yes, can't remember what rave it was, but I was listening to a record that I was queuing in through the headphones and the mixer wasn't very loud. I had both headphones over my ears, but what I didn't know was that the other record was jumping all the time, it wasn't till I looked up to see a dance floor full of people looking at me confused, and when Easygroove jogged the needle I realised what had happened. I did feel silly (oops). Thanks to Easygroove for that. Scene: Ellis, what exactly is a Stoosh Burger? Ellis D: (Roars of laughter) This is obviously for Terry Turbo, erm, a Stoosh Burger, oh, its just a little word that we got when something is really good, you know it will be the difference between having a Ford Orion and a BMW, you know if you got a Stoosh Burger (more laughter), and Terry, your not quite up to the Stoosh Burger stage yet, but your getting there (more laughter). Scene: Finally, your shouts? Ellis D: DJ Swan-E & the L.B.C. Stix, Double Deckers, Eddie, Bond, All Rhythm Section crew, all DJ's, MC's & Promoters & anyone I've missed, over & out, The Captain. Scene Says: Well thank you Ellis D. Once again you have proved to be The Captain of Captains and we wish you all the best for the future and the records were well appreciated. You are definitely of a major Stoosh Burger variety. Interviews by: Ade PROMOTERS! Want ravers across the country to know about your event? Interview
Desire Promoter Profile Profile by Terry Turbo Continuing in our indepth promoter profiles, we spoke to the 2000 AD crew, who throughout 1994 put on a number of top events under the name of Desire, so far this year they have many parties planned with an exclusive merchandise range & several releases for their record label 2000 AD Recordings. Here is Phil & Micks story: Scene: How did you meet? 2000 AD: This is quite funny, we are both keen Spurs supporters & we met on the floor at a game, both very drunk! (everyone laughs) For some strange reason we kept meeting in the same spot every week & didn't even know each others names for years. When we did exchange names & got our heads together we realised we could work together. The turning point was when we was lying on the floor both very drunk again! I ran out of beer & Mick gave me his beer which saved my life, that was when I realised our chance meetings all had a purpose & we started working together. Scene: How long has 2000 AD & Desire been going?? 2000 AD: 2000 AD Productions started around November 1988 with warehouse parties; around this time Mick was doing a think called Andromeda! In 1991 we started doing events called "Desire", we kept 2000 AD Productions as our company name. Scene: Do you like drinking alcohol? 2000 AD: Yes! We do! (We all laugh again!) Scene: Where does the name Desire come from? 2000 AD: It's the desire to go to a party & have a good time. When we started the name in '91 there was a lot of parties on & all we were hearing was about people getting hurt, so we decided to make our raves safe & desirable places to rave hence the name "Desire". Scene: Did you work as partners before or was Desire when you both formed a partnership? 2000 AD: We've always been partners, helping each other, Mick was doing his thing, I was doing mine. All mates basically, if he had a party we would all go & if we had a party vice versa. The turning point was when I had a bad experience with someone so we both thought "fuck it" & formed a company as partners. Scene: What other projects are you currently involved with? 2000 AD: We have a record label called 2000 AD Recordings which has had 4 releases & to be honest we've done nothing with the label, due to the fact we've been so productive with our events. We are now concentrating on it a lot more & over the next few months there will be something out on the Drum & Bass tip. Scene: What is your music policy at your parties? 2000 AD: It all depends at what venue we are at! At The Rocket we go more on the Drum & Bass tip with some Hardcore thrown in & at somewhere like Bagleys where there are lot's of rooms we mix the music policy right up – so we cater for everyone! Scene: What's been your largest party? 2000 AD: To answer that you would have to go back to 1989 that was our largest Underground party. Scene: What's the average attendance of people you would expect at one of your events? 2000 AD: We wouldn't like to say, but some people pull the crowd now that we were pulling in 1989. Scene: What was the biggest or best Desire party? 2000 AD: Our last event at The Roller Express for numbers, but New Year's Eve just gone was the best for atmosphere, the place was heavin' & it didn't stop rocking all night! Scene: Do you have any resident DJ's? 2000 AD: Our resident DJ's are Hype & Randall in the main arena & in the chill out Matt Maurice other than that we have a cycle of DJ's which we use in order. Scene: Why do you think your parties have been so successful? Mick: The vibe & the atmosphere is the main thing, the other thing is we don't allow moody people in our raves, we would rather not take the money off them than have them come in. Phil: It's all about having a strict door policy, we are very lucky in having a massive membership system & a lot of our members come to our parties, we know who they are so we get no trouble. We always put on a good show, with top lazer & lighting, the best DJ's, & above all offer good value for money. We hate calling anything an event! To us a party is a party, for people to come & enjoy themselves & have no hassle. Scene: What music do you personally listen to? Phil: ERM, I quite like the birdie song! Scene: Do you like the old version or the cockney version? Phil: The cockney version (then Phil starts singing the Birdie song & even does the dance!) I also like "Spurs are on their way to Wembley" that's our theme tune! The No 1 tune of all time. Mick: I quite like The Agadoo & Chas & Dave! Not forgetting the "Spurs are on their way to Wembley". Scene: So chaps who's your favourite football team? Phil: Millwall (Laughter). Mick: No, no, No! There is only one Tottenham! Seriously now! 2000 AD: Being serious, what was the question again? Scene: What music do you like? 2000 AD: We've already said our favourites but we do like the Drum & Bass & other types of music. Scene: When you put on an event how long does it take to plan & promote? 2000 AD: It depends on the size of the party, usually it takes six weeks of hard work to arrange, but New Year's Eve took 14 months to plan. Scene: With DJ's & demo tapes what advice would you give them? 2000 AD: Do not give us tapes on the night of our parties – we always lose them! Send them to our office & we listen 34 THE SCENE MAGAZINE

to them. If they are no good we will tell the DJ who has sent the tape. If the tape is good we will try & give him/her a break. It's very hard at the moment as there are so many new DJ's on the circuit, but we do try to give them a break. Scene: Have you got a favourite venue for your parties? 2000 AD: Our personal favourite was the Kelsey Kerridge in Cambridge. Scene: What fellow promoters do you respect for putting on good parties? 2000 AD: World Dance, total value for money, you do hear of people moaning about the price of their tickets but if you go to one of their parties you cannot get better value for your money! Jungle Fever for the excellent job they do, these are a few to name but there are a lot of good promoters out there, two fairly new promoters who we think are doing a good job are United Dance & One Nation look out for this this year! Scene: What's the best thing about putting on a party? 2000 AD: When people make a point of coming up to you on the night & telling you what a good night they are having! Also we get lots of written letters through the post complimenting us on our parties which is a very good thing. At the end of the day, this is our living, we are not the sort of people who say "We don't do it for the money & we are in it for the love of the scene". That's all a load of bollock's what anyone says. We are all in it to earn a living, but at the same time it's a good buzz when you've put on a party & you know that everyone has had a top time. We then feel that we've accomplished what we set out to do! Scene: What's the worst things about putting on parties? 2000 AD: Broken promises! DJ's not turning up & promoters getting the blame for it; venues letting you down at the last minute are the worst things! Scene: What sort of people do you get at your parties? 2000 AD: In our opinion the most friendliest bunch of ravers you could hope to meet, aging from 18 to55 who really do go out and enjoy themselves! Scene: Do you use a certain artist for your flyer designs? 2000 AD: M. Fact is a good friend of ours, he doesn't work for anyone else & in our opinion is the best airbrush artist out there! We also on occasion use Damon & 'H'. Scene: Who are your favourite DJ's? 2000 AD: Our favourite DJ on the Drum & Bass is Randall, on the House Matt Maurice & on the Hard House Drew. Scene: On your flyers you have a dancing man with "Putting the fun back into raving" underneath, is this what you are doing? 2000 AD: Yes! Too many parties are too serious lately. It used to be just go there, have a laugh, a brilliant time & talk about it next week. Now people stand around nodding their heads, being too serious. We don't have this at our parties! Scene: Tell us some of your funny stories? Mick: I was raving at a party on Leabridge Road & it was really dark & there was no toilets so as I needed a piss I found a doorway in a house we were in & when I went through the door I pissed really close to the wall & while doing this someone else thought they would do the same, except they walked passed me & disappeared with a scream. He had fallen down a big hole in the middle of the floor, I helped him out but couldn't stop laughing! Phil: The funniest thing for me was when we held an event in Cambridge, I was standing on the stage & Fido was dancing for us for the first time saw I was watching him dance & started jumping about & dancing all over the stage looking in my direction, all of a sudden he disappeared off the end of the stage in front of thousands & thousands of people. It was so funny – he must of been so embarassed. Scene: Since you have appeared in the Scene/Desire casebook have you had any offers of acting work? 2000AD: It's funny you should say that the whole world has approached us! Mick: Not from behind! I may add. Phil: No, I don't mind be approached from behind as long as it's Mick, enough of that, that's bollocks. I don't want to let this out yet but to be honest I have been approached by 2 major Hollywood film directors! Scene: In the casebook photos you are on a mountain bike Phil, can you do any tricks on it? Phil: Yes I can do loads of tricks on it! Mick: It's not actually his, it's his wifes! Phil: Yes, she lets me use it to go to work, I pick Mick up in the morning & he sit's on the handlebars. Scene: Do you have anything to add? Mick: Yes, hairy legs in your back really annoy's you when you are trying to sleep! Scene: Anything else? Phil: Yes, we are both against hairy legs, especially when it's one up & one down. Mick: the amount of relationships that have split up because of that, makes me laugh! Scene: Is there anything you feel strongly about? Mick: As regards to the parties the venues have fallen thick & fast out there, the government are effectively shutting it all down, so we are booking up as much as we can when we can. What the scene needs is someone to come along & open up new venues! What the government should try to understand is that we employ people & create jobs. It is not all about having a party! It's a business & it's legal – we are not doing anything wrong! As for the drugs side we effectively stamp it out, we have a top security team & if anything should arise, we are there, we have medics & will always have medics. We make sure all our punters are well looked after. Stick together everyone and we will win! One other thing I want to add is a lot of magazines slagged off promoters for charging £20+ for their New Year's Eve parties. What these magazines don't understand is that we have to pay double wages for the venue, DJ's & staff. Those are the reasons why the prices are so high! We wish these other magazines would understand the scene that we are in, praise us more than coat us off! Scene: Finally your shouts? Phil: Alright Mick! Mick: Alright Phil! 2000 AD: Plus all the DJ's & MC's who work for us, all security, Denise & my 2 children & the 3rd one on the way (oi!) all the Spurs team, Turbo Promotions, familys & friends & anyone who we have missed. Interview
Lucky Spin Records Record Shop Review Deep in the heart of Holloway Road, London, is the very popular Lucky Spin Records. Lucky Spin has such names as DJ Swift and Tonic working behind the counter. It was here that we managed to get an interview with Justin (the owner) & Swift & Tonic of Lucky Spin Records. Scene: When did Lucky Spin start? Swift: Lucky Spin started off in Kings Road about three years ago by Sasha (who is co-owner). Tonic: But Justin is the man who runs the shop. Scene: Who is involved in Lucky Spin? Swift: There is Slipmaster J, that's Justin, he actually runs the business, there is Trace, Tonic and me (Swift). Also Darren J works in here one day a week. Scene: What different styles of music do you play? Tonic: We cover all aspects of Jungle and Drum & Bass. Scene: Do you sell many Dub Plates out of Lucky Spin? Justin: No, we don't actually deal with Dub Plates in the shop. Some shops may do them but not us. Scene: Do you get any record orders from abroad? Tonic: Records do go abroad, definitely. They go to Switzerland and Austria as well as in Europe. Scene: Which style of music sell's best in the shop? Swift: Drum and Bass, that's what everyone's into nowaday's. The Ragga thing seems to be going out a bit. Thank god! Scene: You're not into the Ragga Jungle side of the music then? Swift: Don't get me wrong, some tunes are wicked, but I don't see the point in sampling some guys record and putting it on a Drum and Bass rhythm. I like artists who actually take time and make their own music. Scene: What do you think of the Jungle and the Rave scene at the moment? Swift: I think that it is getting very big, it's a way out for a lot of people, and I think that the music is going abroad alot more. Scene: Has Lucky Spin made any music of it's own? Justin: Yes, we have our own labels. They are 'Lucky Spin', 'DJ Recordings' and 'Force 10', but we will be operating a new label called 'Interlective'. Scene: What are Lucky Spins plans for the future? Justin: Hopefully we will be opening another shop called 'Lucky Spin' in Canada, and we will be expanding our labels. Scene: So do you have any advice for anyone wanting to open a record shop or start DJing? Swift: Stick with it, don't get lazy, don't be shy to advertise yourself because people are not always going to come to you. Tonic: Be prepared for a lot of hard work, get the right music and you will get the right customers. Scene: Do you have anything you want to add? Swift: Big Up, Kool FM, Lucky Spin and Blackmarket Records Scene: Finally any shouts? L. Spin: No, because we will get complaints if we miss anyone out. The Scene would like to thank all at Lucky Spin for their help in putting the review together. Good luck with the shop in Canada, and I hope 1995 is your year. Cheers Lads! DESIRE The New Year's Eve Party The Rocket, Holloway Road After a year of some of the best party's I've been to all staged by "Desire 94", both at The Roller Express and The Rocket, we decided the only way to end the year was with "Desire" after a good Christmas I counted the days to New Year's Eve with excitement finally it was Saturday December 31st. We arrived about 9.30pm doors had only been open an hour but already The Rocket was heaving with one of the biggest crowds I've seen in the venue, and they were still queuing to come in. I had a feeling some would be disappointed! The first thing I noticed as we walked in was the atmosphere in the place, the only way to describe it was electric, there was a buzz in here like I've never experienced before, all bad attitudes, ill feeling and gangster behaviour have been forgotten completely, all types of people young and old, all creeds were there together as one! Everyone was accepted by everyone else. The main arena had been totally changed by 2000 AD with a light and lazer display that was mesmerising, the whole crowd and if that wasn't enough some of the finest back drops I've seen alongside the most advanced projection screen's I've eversseen altogether probably the best productions I've seen in the Rocket to date! If the visual delights weren't enough, the DJ line-up was out of this world, Hype, Randall, Fabio, Rap,. Jumping Jack Frost, Darren Jay, Swan-E, Kemistry & Storm & Swift & Zinc tore the place to pieces laying down tune after tune, not a single tune was played that the whole crowd didn't want to hear , it was brilliant! Things got so hyper during the night that even I had to chill out. Occasionally at these points during the night I entered the second arena where some of my favourite House and old skool classics were being played by the legendary Matt Maurice, Funki P, Mellow S & Drew, this arena had been doubled in size with the addition of a fully enclosed marquee equipped with speakers and projectors (nice touch). As midnight drew nearer we entered the main arena the only place to be "Randall" was lifting the roof off the Gaff! Whipping the crowd into a partying frenzy then it all stopped! Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one. Happy New Year, the place went wild I was grabbed by a person who would normally be stereotyped as a bad element "Happy New Year Brother" he said offering me his bottle of champagne "drink up" then I either hugged, shock hands or kissed (the girls only). There wasn't a single person who didn't join in with the celebrations, the atmosphere was untouched by any party I've ever been to old and new. All I hope is that the atmosphere I experienced was a view of the future! The next DJ up was Jumping Jack Frost and he just took the atmosphere and carried it along for the next hour and the rest of the night went the same way. Respect to the 2000 AD crew for a line up that obviously took a lot of thought and planning. Another nice touch was the fact that the DJ's were in the booth normally used by the light crew so they were surrounded by their biggest fans rather than being on a stage far out of reach. To sum up this night in a sentence would be impossible everything on the night in my opinion was just great, the crowd, the lights, production, DJ's, balloons & fireworks at midnight with out doubt the finest party a The Rocket ever! A massive thank you to Phil & Mick for all the hardwork & thought was put in to this party, the security team for looking after us so well, a massive respect to the crowd you proved to me we can all live together as one on the night. "Why not all the time?" Think about it. And a special hello to Miran. THE SCENE MAGAZINES OVERALL OPINION Venue (85%) DJ's, MC's & Sound System (90%) Atmosphere & Crowd (95%) Security (92%) Lighting & Production (93%) My overall rating was 91%. Desire totally transformed The Rocket on New Years Eve & as I have been to The Rocket on many occasions, I must say I have never had such a blinding time at The Rocket – massive respect to Phil & Mick for "Putting the fun back into raving".
