Interview
Graham Gold House DJ profile If you haven't heard his voice on Kiss 100Fm then you must have seen his name on nearly every other flyer on the house and garage circuit, so we contacted Graham Gold for an Exclusive Interview. Q What is your real name & Age? GG My real name is Graham Gold & my age is most certainly classified. Q How did you get into DJing. GG I started off by playing Reggae & then I got into soul & from there I started to play Garage. I started buying House music in 1987, I was a resident DJ at Gullivers which was a Soul club, & I used to play Garage in there. I personally think Garage is nineties Soul! I am also a party person & I go out quite a lot, I see what tunes & styles of music are being played, and how the crowd react. When I play out I Know when to play certain records & How to get the crowd going mad. Which I think is another important thing a DJ should be capable of. Q How long have you been a DJ? GG I have been DJing now for twenty years. Q How did you get involved with Kiss FM & has it helped your career? GG It has helped my career, I used to play on virtually every pirate in London, G.K.O, Horizon, Solar etc. But I never did Kiss FM. But in December 1988, some new laws were passed & if you played on a pirate station you would not be allowed to play on a legal one. So I came off the pirate airwaves on the 1st december 1988. One day I rang Gordon Macc at Kiss FM & after trying to raise enough money to start up my own legal station I realised that I didn't have the capital. I told him everything had fell through, so he gave me a job as a DJ on Kiss, that is how I got involved! Q Have you made any Records? GG Yes, I have a label called Peach recordings, I've released 3 Records and two of them have been top 40 hits, Maradonna "Going out of my head" & Provadoe. Q What events do you personally put on? GG I am involved with two events, G.I.S.M. & Peach. Q Where do you buy your records from? GG I regularly shop at City Sounds, Unity & T.A.G. Records. Q What other DJ's do you rate? GG I rate Seb Fontaine, Darren Pearce, Dave & Craig, Dave Dorrell (Because he doesn't play up his arse), that really gets my goat up when DJ's play up there arse & don't play for the crowd. I also rate Pete Waterman, Luv Dup, Judge Jules & Graham Park. Q Do you like percussionists over over your set? GG I love working with them, I think people(as in DJ's) don't use them as well as they should. Q How often do you play out a week? GG I play out once mid week, twice on a friday, Three on a Saturday & once on a Sunday, roughly about eight times a week! Q What do you think about the Jungle & Rave Scene? GG I think that Jungle is a carry on from the Hardcore, it's still very much a 15 to 18 situation. A lot of the old Ravers have now got into the House & Garage & go to clubs like Peach & The Leisure Lounge Q What do you think of the current House & Garage scene at present? GG I like most of it, mainly the uplifting stuff. I don't like the moody dubs or deep house, it just seems to be all the same, but in saying that Matt Jam Lamont & Mickey Simms are very good at playing what they play. Q Why do you think you've been a successful DJ? GG because I play as if I'm a punter, as I always go raving, I know what buzz their on and what music they want to hear. I play upfront, old skool, music for the boys, music for the girls. I'm not afraid to play any type of music in my set, I'm quite a good mixer and I always play for the crowd. Q What's your advice for up & coming DJ's? GG Believe in yourself and work at it. When you've made it never accept that you've made it and keep on pushing! Don't disappear up your arse! (most important). Q Have you played abroad? GG Malta & Ibiza are the main places I've DJayed abroad. Q When can our readers catch you on Kiss FM? GG Saturday 12pm - 2pm which is the chart show; Sunday 2pm - 4pm where I'm 70% play listed & hopefully I could do a specialist show where I have 100% free choice of what music is played. (One Day) Q What are your plans for the future? GG Just to keep doing what I'm doing & to carry on doing well. I would also like to play more up North, for people like Cream, Back to Basics, Fun etc.. Q And finally any shouts Graham? GG Hi to mel, Eric, Mark, Hannah, all the Kiss FM crew, all Peach, G.I.S.M. & Perfect Virtue Posse + everybody else who knows me! (Radio Joke) Thanks very much for your time Graham. After a short dispute - yes it was Dec 1992. Scene: Have you done any tracks for any other labels? Johnny: Yes! (Long Pause)..XL Recordings, Suburban Base & White House, they are the main ones. Scene: What made you start your own label? Johnny: We were sick & tired of being ripped off by other labels, so we decided to start our own label, so we would get all the money & there would be no arguing with any middle men! Scene: How long do your tracks stay on Dub- Plate before they are released? Johnny: They stay on plate for about 3 months usually! Scene: What's been Faces best selling release? Johnny: It was a track by DJ Mayhem & it sold around 8 thousand copies!! Scene: Do many people send you D.A.T.S & Demo's? Johnny: We do get a lot of Demo's, most,we have to turn down as Face Records have their own style & if a Dat or Demo hasn't got our style we won't press it! Scene: Why do you think Face Records has been so successful? Johnny: Errm!.........The Public buy the Records, so its down to them, thanks for buying our tunes! Scene: What DJ's do you rate & use to promote your records? Johnny: Randall, Brockie, Andy C, Jumping Jack Frost, Hype, to be honest, all them really that can go out and fling it down! (We're licking arse 'cause we want then to play our tunes, Sponge laughs!) Scene: Are you involved in any other projects apart from Face? Johnny: Yes, I'm a Pimp & I've got loads of girls on my books, can I interest you in any? Scene: Our reporters at this stage DID NOT make any excuses, they just undid their trousers, gave Johnny £50 & had a wicked time with some of his girls! (What ever happened to making your excuses & leaving? Cant get the staff these days - Editor!) Johnny: No seriously we do a bit of work for Suburban Base, IQ, Frontline & Ganja. Scene: And you plans for the future? Johnny: To make some money! (What a yarn!, what about all the money you borrowed from your chauffeur Mr. Woodhead, I bet you gambled it all away on fruit machines!!) We want to buy some nice fast cars & have a good laugh along the way! Scene: Have you any shouts? Johnny: Yes, loads and loads, Hype, Brockie, Randall, Andy C, Danny-Sub Base, Thomas O'Kegan, hardware, Marvellous Cain, Mum & Dad, Our birds & Everyone who has helped Face records over the years, especially Ronnie Size, for being original, Dillinger, He's just bad. PEACH - House Club Review, By Royston Anyone who is anyone has either seen the Flyer or heard about Peach - It used to be at Legends & has now moved on to the Cafe De Paris - Before we review the Club we thought it essential to get an inside look at peach. Scene: Who is behind peach? GG: Myself - Graham Gold & Nikki Smith. Scene: When was the first "Peach" event? GG: The 15th September 1993 at Legends, Old Burlington Street, W1. Scene: Where did the name "Peach" come from? GG: Dave Lambert thought up the name & I run a record label called Peach. Scene: What different types of House Music do you play? GG: We play uplifting House music all night - Funky House, Banging Euro, a bit of Tribal - basically if you can dance to it, we play it! Scene: What DJ's play for you on a capital basis? GG: Graham Gold, Darren Pearce, Dave Lambert & Craig Dimech. We have up & comings and other top DJ's playing at peach as well, but the first 4 DJ's named really do work well together, and make peach very good music wise, you won't hear the same records being played twice!! Scene: What type of clubber does "Peach" attract? GG: We attract happy trendy people who go out to have a good time! Scene: What has been the best "Peach" event? GG: They have all been wicked. I'd personally say every single Peach we've done has been good! Scene: What other events do you put on other than Peach? GG: I put on something called G.I.S.M. with a friend & Nikki does the Satellite Club. Scene: And Finally what are your plans for the future? GG: To carry on putting on a good weekly club & maybe in a years time to move on to a new venue! Right then, thanks very much for for the insight into the world of Peach Mr. Gold, and now onto our club review:-. We got to the Cafe De Paris in London's Leicester Square around 11pm. There was a long queue but luckily we missed that & got straight into the Club. Greeted by a friendly security firm which does make a difference to any promoters night!! After walking around the venue, its good to see that some promoters still spend money on doing up their venue and making the night worth the asking price on the door! All DJ's played very well & the crowd were having it major! There was no bad attitude in the Club, only the right attitude & that was to have a good night out and party!!! Congratulations to Graham & Nikki on a splendid night & If you haven't been to Peach get yourselves down there this Friday! - 10/10. THE SCENE MAGAZINE

Jungle Mania - review We arrived at the The New London Astoria at about 1.00am and the outside was just rammed. This was said to be a roadblock and indeed it sure was!!! The queue was still long and half way round the building, so it looked like there was going to be plenty of disappointed faces. We walked into the venue with a mad push and shove and took our place at the back of the club just by the bar. I had a look round to see what moods people were in, and I was amazed to see how good the atmosphere was as everyone was just raring to go. The music was the main attraction for everyone being there and the crowd were loving every minute of it. When tracks like "Warning" were played the whole place just went crazy and the atmosphere went wild. When it was time for Kenny Ken to do his set, the crowd gave him a massive wild cheer as they knew they were in for a good session. The Jungle Sound Clash Champion himself proved that he is still is "King Of The Jungle" The lighting was just out of this world with wicked lasers that put a great effect on the whole of the venue and its people. Then after a couple of hours dancing we were then introduced to two great performances. First was the mad terrorist himself "Ray Keith" and then UK Apachi and Shy FX with backing dancers to kill. The two men stole the night and lived up to their names as they sure were the Original Nutters of the night. After a while we went upstairs to The Keith Moon Bar where DJ Rap was doing her set. This was the first time I had ever experienced her great skills and believe me I was well impressed. We hung around for longer than what we expected too as her set was just "SHOCKING". After a while we went back to the main arena to hear the sets of the remaining DJ's. Overall we had a good night although it would have been better to have got there earlier and got in quicker. The best sets of the night were by "Kenny Ken" "Jumping Jack Frost" and of course " DJ Rap" herself. 10/10 Review: Sarah M Juice review - Hastings Pier Saturday 15th - The Promoters of a successful Jungle night known as Unity decided to chance their luck with an event called 'Juice'. being more on the Happy Hardcore tip they had DJ's playing like Seduction, Dougal, Sy, Vibes, Swan-E, SS & Grooverider, who all played happy & uplifting music. The sound system was good & for their first happy hardcore event they pulled a wicked crowd & everything that was on the flyer was there!! Massive respects to Dean & Jason for putting on a wicked party & If you see the flyer for there next event, you will not get in if you are wearing a thong or a flasher mac or if you are a wally??? Highly recommended in true south coast style! 10/10 Review: Rude Boy Roy "Labello Blanco" - Jungle Massive 2 Competition Labello blanco Recordings have just released Jungle Massive 2 which is going to be massive!! Interview
DJ SY - Hardcore DJ Profile As one of the most respected DJ's on the Hardcore circuit, we thought it was an absolute necessity to feature him in our latest magazine. What is your real name & age? My names Simon & I'm 25 years old. How did your DJ career start off? When I moved from London to Nottingham I played in a wine bar(1989). I used to spin Soul, Hip-Hop & House - The bloke who owned the wine bar opened a nightclub and had me there as a resident just as the ravescene was taking of. The music policy of the club was going more & more towards House & then it progressed into Hardcore. An agency called Dyn-a-mix picked me up & since then I've been all over the place & my career has really took off! What made you want to become a DJ? I was always messing about with my decks at home - I always listened to pirate radio stations like L.W.R & I was well into music & the combination of the above just got me into Dj-ing. Have you played on any Radio stations? I used to play Rave Fm in Nottingham ! Massive respect to all of the crew. Have you a favourite place to play ? I like playing all over. I've just started to pick up work in London which is good - I like playing at Dreamscape, United Dance, Die Hard, Leicester, Fusion, Club Kinetic & World Dance. They are my favourites at the moment! What do you think of the music at the moment? I think recently the music has got ten times better. About six months ago the music was shit. All the producers like myself, Slipmatt, Seduction, Vibes & Dougal have been churning out some wicked tunes which has helped the happy hardcore scene become more appealing! Were you a Hip Hop DJ before you played Hardcore due to your scratching ability? I used to play Hip Hop when it first came out in England & I learnt how to scratch then! I used to be a drummer & I'm used to playing along with music. This is what I do when I scratch up a record, rather than cut it up, I make the scratching sound like part of the record. What DJ's do you rate? Any DJ that doesn't play for himself & looks at the crowd and judges what sort of music they like & plays for the crowd. Do you like working with MC's? It doesn't really bother me as long as they work with me and not on their own. There are two many MC's who work on their own. What Record labels do you rate? Hectic, Knite Force, Formation to name a few. The rest of the tunes I get sent are on plate or on white - so I don't know what labels they are going to be on. Where do you buy your records from? Dance 2, Guildford & Wax City, Croydon. What is the biggest event you've ever played at? Fantazia, Bournemouth. What's been your most embarrassing moment as a DJ? I was playing at the Eclipse, Coventry & I started of a Record on the wrong speed. It went on for about 2 minutes - I wasn't listening to the record and everyone was looking at me as if to say "What are you doing?" I was well embarrassed! Have you made any of your own music? "Are you ready" is coming out soon and I've done 8 more tunes which are waiting to be cut! What was your previous occupation before becoming a DJ? When I left University I worked in a builders merchant before becoming a full time DJ. What are your plans for the future? The production of music is going to become big time & we want to get into remixing tunes - Also carry on being a DJ. And finally your shouts? All promoters, DJ's, MC's,-Brother- Dave- Hectic Records Crew, Dynamix-Phil, DJ Unknown, Temptation, Dance 2, wax city. Reckless, all Nottingham & Croydon crew's + Sarah, my Lady!! The Scene would like to thank DJ SY for this exclusive interview & wish him all the best for the future! SEDUCTION WATCH OUT! DJ SY IS GOING TO DRINK YOU UNDER THE TABLE! THE GAUNTLET HAS BEEN THROWN DOWN - DO YOU ACCEPT THE CHALLENGE? IF SO, RING THE SCENE MAGAZINE - SO WE CAN ARRANGE THIS DJ DRINKING BATTLE TO TAKE PLACE - & REMEMBER WHERE YOU READ IT FIRST! - The Scene always with their ears to the floor. Interview: Terry Turbo

Break the Bank - Innersense Saturday, 8th October The Laserdrome has given us some outstanding nights over the last two years, its unique combination of bubbling, mood-free atmosphere, top DJ line-ups, new improved decor and 50K sub bass sound system make it worthy of the accolade "Best hardcore Club". In fact this year's Beach Party in the summer and the 2nd Birthday party in September set new and higher standards. And then there was Break the Bank Night... It started with a roadblock, before the club even opened there were queues of eager party-goers right around the block, and at a quarter to one in the morning Security had to declare the house full, even the guest list was put on hold! The hundreds of people that were unfortunately turned away will know to arrive earlier in future "to avoid disappointment"... as the flyer quite rightly points out! By twelve o'clock the main arena was hot, sweaty, and most definitely rocking, and the balcony, tunnels and other areas were so packed that you couldn't help but get to know people a little more intimately. The party was in progress and there was no holding back. As usual, security did an excellent job in keeping what , if any, trouble to a minimum. Personally i didn't see any, and considering the head count, that was quite an achievement. the crowd were, to say the least, up for it and the atmosphere was as electric as the national grid. Big respect should go to the DJ's on the night. Probe stood in for the renegade Ray Keith, who was attending to some last minute business in Italy, with the rest of the line up promised - Gachet, Kenny Ken, Fabio, Grooverider, Brockie & Randall. they all excelled themselves, much to the appreciation and warmth of the musically educated crowd. respect should also go out to the one and only MC Reality (I don't know how he does it week in week out?) Three o'clock saw the novel "break the bank" theme in full effect -hundreds of balloons were released from the roof in the hardcore room; some had paper inside which entitled the bearer to nearly £1000 worth of prizes. Heaps of lighters, free drinks and gifts of £5 were won, and two lucky gits won the star prizes - £250 cash and a years free entrance to Innersense. After the frantic balloon bursting ceremony, the presentations of the star prizes to the winners by Innersense's foundling father and "Godfather" (or should I say Don?) Ryan, and a bit of a breather, fabio pumped the music back up and it was business as usual. The Dancefloor stayed rammed with a heaving mass of bodies until the lights went up around 7am. The Production was as usual, superb, the sound crisp, the facilities excellent and the vibe simply vibrant. Congratulations to all involved but especially Ryan, Sonja, Maria, Fish, Simon and the Final Touch 911 Security, Graham, Parm and the Warptight Security, and above all the lively Innersense crew who helped make the night another one to remember. All I can say is that I'm looking forward to Halloween and I dare say it, the Christmas and New Year Bashes. Review: Woodmix THE SCENE MAGAZINE

Interview
The Inta-View Have you heard about INTA? Well if you haven't it's too bad 'cause I'm not telling anyone & that's a fact! (Confused? OK we will try to explain:) on a Thursday night we were told that if we went to West Croydon we would have a wicked night out - pull some birds, get drunk (we told them that we were not like that here at the Scene and we were only interested in serious relationships!) - but after being persuaded by Flux & Danny we were led into Temptation by the INTACREW: Scene: How was INTA created? INTA: Basically - we have all known each other since school & about 2.5 years ago we decided to form a crew called INTA - which stands for I'm Not Telling Anybody - when we all got together we all clicked & got on well but we are not saying why & how we clicked that is why INTA was formed! There are no bosses - we are all equal - the people behind it are Paul, Danny, Peter, Flux, DJ Fabio, DJ Grooverider, Killer, Face, DJ Bailey - there are others who we hang out with - but the people mentioned above are the INTA crew! Scene: What are your plans for INTA? INTA: At the moment we are sticking to the clothing - but we are going to make music as well & we want to put on a Rave - but it would have to have the old vibes - you could go out in your pajamas - jump up and down for 8 hours and no one would say anything to you! You could go up and talk to whoever you like and have a good conversation - make lot's of new friends. Scene: So what are your different jobs in INTA? INTA: Well, Grooverider and Fabio push INTA on the music side - I do the MC part and the others do the clothing part! It's our way of bringing good vibes back INTA the Scene! Scene: Who designed the INTA logo? Danny: I sketched it out in rough on a tissue box and after a few modifications we decided to use it! INTA: We want to make INTA UK wide and then world wide - with records, parties and of course clothing! Watch out for that! Also our new catalogue is coming out soon - watch out for it - it is not aimed at solely the Rave Scene it is aimed at anybody, any age form any walk of life! Scene: What styles of music do you like? Danny: I like anything from Hardstep to House to Hip-Hop to Soul - I like all types of music - if you could see my record collection you probably would never talk to me again!! Mc Flux I'm INTA Hardstep at the Moment - watch out for that it's going to be massive! Paul I am well INTA Hard-House & when Grooverider first started out we used to play a wicked Jazz set! Peter I'm INTA anything you can dance to! Scene: Finally chaps your shouts? INTA: The Oxford Babes, Mickey-INTA - (Ynas, Murray, Dreamscape, Frost, Fabio, Rider, MC Five"O" (the Speeck Maker), Mc Navigator, De Underground with there well known West ham Goalkeeper! Kool FM, a massive shout out to the original Hard Step creator Goldie! Rupert, respect to Rob Playford, Blame, Omni-Trio, 2 Bad Mice and all the moving shadow massive! and finally a funny but true story from the INTA crew: We were going to dance trance at the Que Club, Birmingham and our car broke down on the motorway! We were not in the AA - so we were stranded - a police car came along - we all thought Allo! Allo! they went through with the routine - we had 2 lovely looking girls with us who put on the charm and after a few minutes we talked them into towing us the rest of the way - so we jumped in there Police car & on the way the copper said "Do you Puff" - we all denied it - but he kept saying "Come on, you must puff" - eventually, we admitted we did & that we had some on us - the copper got us to skin up & we had about 3-4 joints with these two policemen before they dropped us off! This has got to have been one of our best experiences ever - the police are not all bad!!! Love from INTA crew The Scene says: The INTA crew have definitely got the right attitude with everything they are trying to achieve give them your support - buy there jackets and pull lot's of girls or if your a girl - lot's of boys - they are definatley clothes to get INTA. Maximum respect to Paul, Danny, Peter & Flux - thanks for your time! Cheers Terry Turbo. To contact the INTA crew ring any of the chaps on (0836) 662649 this is the information centre!

Reviews
Helter Skelter -review- Tonight was the night for Helter Skelter at the sanctuary in Milton Keynes. After visiting their last three parties & enjoying every one we couldn't wait to get in there! After a long queue we eventually got into the venue, & after an hour or so we decided it was well worth the wait. What a production. What a lightshow!. The DJ's in all played to a high standard & set's of the night undoubtedly went to DJ Hype, DJ Randall & DJ Sy for making the crowd go mental! The sound was loud and the new cooling system was in full effect which in my opinion made a big difference to the party! The security at the sanctuary were very thorough on the searches on the way in, some people have moaned about this, but remember this. If they didn't search people properly The sanctuary would not be a safe place to rave in, so they are only doing it to make sure you have a trouble free night. They are only doing their jobs. The Sanctuary is not closing down & we have spoke to David from the Helter Skelter organisation & he informs us that his next event is on the 25th November, Watch out for that, We can't wait. Another safe & friendly night bought to you by the Helter Skelter Crew. 10/10 Review: Darren P HECTIC RECORDS - profile After an hours drive to Portsmouth (or Pompey) as its known on the south coast, we went to the studio of Hectic Records, one of the newest & most successful happy hardcore labels around at the moment, here is how the story goes: SCENE: How did Hectic Records start? HECTIC: It was DJ Supreme who first made a Track with DJ Ramos & we put it under Fusion Records & when we looked around we found that there was already a record label called Fusion, so we changed the name to Hectic Records. hectic was formed in October '93, we've been going just over a year now. SCENE: Who are the people behind Hectic Records? HECTIC: Chris & Geoff, we also run the rave "Fusion" as well. SCENE: Where does the name Hectic come from? HECTIC: It was the name of a production company we had & we used to do a night midweek called Hectic. SCENE: Who influences you musically? HECTIC: DJ Druid & any DJ which plays on an uplifting & happy tip. SCENE: What other sorts of music do you listen to? HECTIC: All DJ mix tapes from our do's, Techno, Hardcore, Jungle, Trance, Garage & other than that we listen to the radio. SCENE: What's been you best selling record to date? HECTIC: Our first tune by Ramos & Supreme "Journey" + "Crowd Control" has done over 4,000 copies, but I think that No.6 Hectic, the remixes by DJ Slipmatt has now outsold my 1st release. SCENE: What sort of music do you put out? HECTIC: On our label its purely happy & uplifting Hardcore? SCENE: Where does your logo come from? HECTIC: The face actually comes off an erasure membership card, (remember them? - why won't they tell us who the owner of the membership card is? Editor!) Our printer then played around with it and came up with our finished logo. SCENE: What are your plans for the future? HECTIC: It would be nice to be big in a different country, Its going well in this country & we'd like to establish Hectic as one of this country's leading Happy Labels. SCENE: Why do you think the label has been successful? HECTIC: I think it has been successful as there is a gap in the market & a lot of labels have gone on the Jungle Tip, where as we have continued to produce happy music. SCENE: Your shouts? HECTIC: All DJ's + MC's + Promoters, Producers, especially all Fusion Records Crew & everyone who knows us!
