Interview
DAVE O'NEIL - Interview:Royston
HOUSE & GARAGE DJ PROFILE
Dave O'Neil has been a DJ for a number of years, he has just set up a record label & is an owner of Buzz Records, High Wycome - Here is Dave's story:
What is your real name & age?
My real name is Dave O'Neil & I'm 27 years old.
How long have you been a DJ?
About 12 years.
How did you get into DJing?
I've always bought lots of music & I've always played around mixing up records - this made me want to go out & play my music.
What different styles of music do you play?
At the moment I play Mainly American House - I have played more commercial club music & then I got into Acid House before playing the Music I play at present.
What's your favourite Club or event you have DJayed at?
I most enjoy parties we put on ourselves. We always do them once every three months - last Christmas was our best event. It was in a big Mansion House in Great Missenden. It held 350 people & was an absolutely amazing party.
Can you tell us a little bit about your record shop?
It was established in December 1992 - Myself & my partner Grant warden own the shop - We sell rap, Soul, Breakbeat, Jungle, Techno and a lot of UK & US House.
When you play out do you have a planned set or do you play for the crowd?
I don't play a set -when I play out I take 2 boxes of Records with me so I can play at least 3 times if need be! I played out recently & I was due to play a 2 hour set. A couple of Dj's didn't turn up, and I ended up playing for 6 & a half hours! - which goes to show how versatile I can be.
Why do you think you've been successful as a DJ?
COMMITMENT! The love of music is important & enjoying what you do is important. I also have a unique style - nearly all U.K. DJ's play U.K style House -There are not very many who play deep American house which is what I play - This is probably another reason!
How many times do you play out a week?
Normally 2-3 times sometimes more.
What do you think about the Ravescene?
I used to hate it - as probably most house orientated people do - But, now I think Rave music has got a lot better, especially jungle.
Have you ever made any music?
Yes! Our first release is coming out on 1st Base Records. An American Label & the track is called' The Sticks & Stones' e.p which is by Tribe on a Vibe
Where do you get your records from?
I blag them off everyone I can! (Dave laughs), I've been collecting records for 12 years I've got thousands of records & owning a record shop helps- If I hear a tune when I'm out I ring up the label & they usually send me a copy.
What are your plans for the future?
The shop we want to expand - we may be opening up another shop! Basically the shop is a base for our own label & events & for my DJing - on a personal tip, I want to stay within the Industry - Maybe ending up in remixing & producing records.
What do you think of the house scene at present?
I think its a bit confused - there's a combination of people crossing over from the hardcore scene at present - a lot of promoters are booking the same old DJ's & I think this is probably the main reason for the lack of a Party Atmosphere in a lot of the Clubs!
Last, but not least, your shouts
Grant - my partner, James, Danny, Ronnie, Gavin, my girlfriend Rachel, -"POET"- the sharp eyed dog who lives in Buzz records.

Reviews
FULL MONTY CLUB - Sept 10th
REVIEW
After doing reviews on 2 Top London House & Garage clubs, we decided to venture out of London & after hearing so much about a club called Mirage in Windsor we though we'd go to one of the best nights out of the month "The Full Monty" to check it out. After getting through the hoards of people outside the club - we managed to pull aside the Full Monty promoters Dave & Mark who gave us some information on the Full Monty.
Scene: When was your first Full Monty?
Full M: It was 3 years ago at a club called Henrys, Burnham Beeches, Nr.Slough, Berks.
Scene: Where did you get the name and logo from?
When we used to go out if something was good we used to say it was "The Full Monty" - so we decided to use that saying as our name for our events. we are also a couple of Historians & Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery was a very famous man in the war so we decided to use hid face as our logo for the front of our Flyers!
Scene: What was the best Full Monty Party you have ever put on?
Full M: It was on a Bank Holiday Sunday - we had Steve Proctor & Andy Weatherall playing& it was a total roadblock- ticket touts were selling tickets outside for £20 - It was only £8 per ticket in Advance!!
Scene: What has been the biggest event you've put on?
Full M: it was at Mirage, Windsor - We had a Full House & we turned away well over 1,000 people - Heartbreaking!! It was in Association with the Ministry of Sound about one and a half years ago!
Scene: Have you made any Music?
Full M: Yes, we have just set up our own record label & our 1st Record "Brilliant feeling" by the Full Monty All Stars reached No. 84 in the National Chart & No. 19 in the Dance Chart - Watch out for our next record!
Scene: What sort of music policy do you have at your events?
Full M: We don't play anything too extreme & we always have a nice mixture of music, hard, soft, & commercial - this way we usually keep everyone happy.
Scene: What other events have you put on other than the Full Monty?
Full M: The Casbah, Chesham; Midnight Express, Aldershot; Shelter, Slough - our first event was called Henry's cat - It was a charity event & the money raised went to the children's ward at Wexham Park Hospital in Slough.
Scene: Why do you think your parties are so successful?
Full M: We always put on a top line up, we spend a lot of money on the production and sound systems used at our events & we offer good value for money!!
Scene: Where else have you put on Full Monty Parties?
Full M: We have been at all the Clubs in the UK - We recently done a Four Nations Weekender - England, Ireland, Scotland & wales. Twice a year we go to New Zealand to put on parties - our next one is in January.
Scene:Finally Your Shouts!
Full M: Norman "Endsleigh" Jay, Justin Robinson, Pop Promotions, Mr & Mrs Weatherall, L.P.O.- epecially Buzzard, Sharon, Mickey Ridley, Tuffy, bonny & Charles at Mirage, everyone who has helped Full Monty become successfull, especially all the punters.
Scene: Now its time to check out the Full Monty. Whether you are male or female this club is for you -lot's and lot's of interesting people with a young to middle aged crowd- excellent lighting with some mad looking gold statues scattered around the place - A good chill out room & quite a posh layout inside the Club. All the DJ's played well. The crowd and atmosphere was electric - with one of the best nights I've had out for a long time - I would definitely Recommend the Full Monty to any serious clubber with a top DJ line, live P.A. & only £10 in Advance for an Allnighter- There next event is on Saturday 22nd of October - Check It Out.!!
Mark & Dave have given us 5 copies of there single "Brilliant Feeling". If you would like a copy send us the answer to this question - Who has remixed "Brilliant Feeling" by the Full Monty Allstars. Was it:
A) John Major B)John "Pleased" Wimmin? C) Andy Weatherall?

AUNTIE TRISHA'S PROBLEM PAGE
You've heard of Claire Rayner & Dear Deidre - well forget them because we have employed the Queen of all the agony aunts "Auntie Trish" - she is here to give you the most unhelpful & most stupid advice to your problems - so if you've got a problem & want to be in with a chance of winning an 'Auntie Trisha solved My Problem' T-shirt then send us your problem - may the best letter win!
Dear Auntie Trisha, P.O. Box 107, Camberly, Surrey, GU15 4ZE.
Here are 4 we have already recieved:-
Dear Auntie Trisha,
I would like to know if I am the unluckiest person in the Dance scene. From 1989 till 1990 I went in search of 37 illegal Acid House parties around the M25, not finding one, I then thought I would get on the Garage tip. I brought my designer Top & Leather waistcoat, but was refused entry to every club I went to. I tried a Jungle event, but not having a lighter I took a box of Swan Vestas with me & ended up burning 6 of my fingers. Whilst on holiday in Amsterdam recently, I went to a hubba techno event. I liked the music, but got my head kicked in by 14 Rotterdam Techno Nazi Skinheads. As a last resort, could you please tell me a decent Hardcore Event to go to, or fuck the Dance Scene, as I will start following 'Take That'.
Yours Unluckily
Gerrymia Twat.
Auntie Trisha Says :
I think you probably are the unluckiest person in the world. Try carrying some lucky heather or a four leaf clover with you. If this fails, a horseshoe or a rabbits foot might bring you some better luck. As far as suggesting a good Hardcore event to go to, I think you should read the scene magazine every month, as all good Hardcore events advertise in The Scene!(Plug! Plug!) Anyway I am a great fan of 'Take That' Gerrymia & although I am the dance scenes Agony Aunt, I love there music - so if all else fails write to me and I will send you some 'Take That' Merchandise, Posters & a Sticker Album to help you on your way!
Dear Auntie Trisha
I did fifteen White Doves last weekend & now I can't remember my name or anything, what do you suggest?
Yours
??????
Auntie Trisha Says:
This is quite normal, simply repeat the process this coming weekend & although your memory may not be restored, I'm sure you'll feel a lot better. Alternatively, change your name to White Dove! (I like that name!)
Dear Auntie Trisha,
Why are people so prejudice about Trainspotters? I am a Trainspotter, and I think it is a very stimulating hobby. I am also very proud of my Anorak. It keeps me warm & I can put my thermal flask in my inside pocket! I am sick of being ridiculed. train spotting is wonderful - why don't people agree?
Yours,
Mr. A. Nonse (aged 65)
Auntie Trisha says:
You poor old man - I think you need to read my advice booklet (Thomas the Tank Engine for the over 65's) & you will soon see that trains are like people & my booklet shows you how to talk to trains & how you can find and meet that special train.
Dear Auntie Trisha,
My Goldfish is wrecking my life!! Everytime I get a boyfriend & bring him back to my house & we start to get passionate, my Goldfish Jumps out of his bowl & thrashes around on the floor gasping for air! Do you think my Goldfish might be jealous?
Yours desperately
Willma Needsit
Auntie Trisha says:
Your Goldfish is obviously head over heals in love with you. You nasty woman. Don't you have feelings for your Goldfish. People like you make me sick, especially when they have affairs under there loved ones noses. Anyway, I've passed your Address on to the R.S.P.C.A. & they will come and take your Goldfish Away until you learn to be faithful to your Goldfish. I will send you my booklet 'How to win back your Goldfish's heart'. Read It!!
Well...... errh....... Thanks for your help in this months.....erhh Issue - We will see you in the ... erm........ ..Next issue!!

Interview
FLEX I was an Electrician.
Q What's the funniest thing that's happened to you when you've been playing out?
FATS I was MCing for Flex in Birmingham & we wheeled back a tune and the crowd were going mad. All of a sudden, this Rock star came out of nowhere, snatched the mike off me & started giving it the large - He was behind the Decks, Jumping all over the stage - Me and Flex were rolling up - well funny
Q What's the most embarrassing moment you've had as a DJ?
FLEX Leaving my Records in the cab ( Flex laughs)- Fats says "Cool Hand Flex don't get no embarrassments - He's too laid back" (Everyone laughs) - I don't think I've ever done anything really bad to cause Embarassement!
Q Have you any Clubs or events you like to play on?
FLEX I like Innersense, Lazerdrome & A.W.O.L. at the Paradise Club! (They are my favourites)
A message from Flex & Fats to all the people in the scene - Keep the scene kicking- don't listen to the critics - We all made the scene - So people can't tell us what to do with it - We all make the Scene what it is !
Q Where do you buy your Records from?
FLEX & FATS Woolworths & Our Price - Were well in with the Girls who work behind the counters - she keeps us all the Promo's. (They both Laugh). No, seriously, most of the music we get through De Underground - occasionally we go to BlackMarket or Section 5!
Q And finally you shouts?
All DJ's MC's & Record Labels - Especially Suburban Base, Mikee, Hype, Randall - All De Underground customers, Marlon (The Next Randall??) A Big HHHEEEYYY!!! To MC GQ coming from FATS & FLEX

After receiving more than a few angry letters from disappointed up and coming DJ's and MC's about a so called DJ Agency called 'Time Bomb', we though it our duty to track down the man behind all this chaos and broken promises.
The office address that they advertised from no longer existed and the phone had been cut off.
We then spoke to the Magazine that they advertised with, who also claimed that hey had not been payed for the advert, and could not get hold of them either. Very Suspicious!!
However, our man Bodger Crook has managed to track down his real address:

DREAMSCAPE 12
In Depth Report
REVIEW by Mc Conrad
"Over 10 hours of musical delight combining the usual unequalled electric atmosphere with unparalleled levels of production 100% Guaranteed."
This statement was taken from the flyer, sounds about right to me. Once again Murray & The ESP Crew take over the home base and as always no corner has been cut, both Arenas were decked out to the hilt with the long line of Attractions, Merchandise & Services as promised.
All night long, 2 Martin F2 sound systems Bumped out every style of up tempo dance known to today's raver. Call it Techno, Jungle, Happy, Deep, Gabba, Ragga dark or Uplifting, anything past 155 bpm that was firing was the sound that shook the sanctuary that night.
The sound providers in the main arena were as follows: Vinylgroover, Seduction, Vibes, then Clarkee kept it banging for Techno heads in search of the Techno Dread Easygroove who was double booked. DJ Hype increased the heat with rough neck beats, then it was 'Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy' A double dose of Dougal due to a mystery no show from Ellis Dee. More break beat pressure from Slipmatt, a scratch attack by Sy, then the party was back down to ground level Inta style, with the sound of Grooverider, finishing the night quite neatly. Both rooms rocked with a good selection of the most top classics, up to date plates & a good dash of unleashed beats. All the MC's billed for the night showed & performed the living lyrical display & with a few extra mouths we had a good game of pass the mic. Shouts to Patrick, Ribbs & Robbie Dee! Going to the back room where I spent most of the night - DJ Kid played first, then the sound of London rang the place, as Ray Keith manned the decks - some serious Drum and Bass with a splash of Ragga. Mastervibe covering for Clarkee (Main Room) kept up the beat mania, as did Swanne (Gave one of my boys a bit of a dancing fit!) Fair play mate! Destruction & Ramos then followed. Things got very sophisticated as L.T.J. Bukem set the levels with sounds for those that know & know how to let it show. A shout out to Mastervibe for filling the space for Peshay (who didn't show due to an illness. Get back on the case soon mate!)
Kenny Ken then kept things kicking for the beat freaks, then Trevor Rockliffe shut down the show with a slice of techno. The night all round was a success. Everybody was on there best behaviour, the sound was right, the lights were bright & the house was full. My favourite sound of the night. There's those that know an those that.. Nice one murray, you've done it again! !
Respect, MC Conrad & The Scene Crew.
(The Scene would like to thank Conrad for the excellent write up! Cheers Mate!)

Interview
DJ Seduction INTERVIEW
After a lot of arm twisting & persuading we managed to get an exclusive Interview with a well known sex god. Forget Tom Jones - Forget Barry White - we are in the nineties now & according to a recent survey we've found DJ Seduction to be a bit of a hit with the girls in Hertfordshire ! OI ! OI !
What's your real name & how old are you?
My names Mustapha, I mean John - only my good friends call me Mustapha & I'm 24 years old.
What made you want to become a DJ?
I've always been into music and when I started to play around on 2 turntables and a mixer I found out I could mix - I thought, why not try to make a living out of being a DJ?
When did you get your first big break?
At an outdoor event called "Energy".
Tell us about 'Impact' Records
I own the label & at the moment we are putting out mainly happy music. The label is going well & we've got some new releases coming out soon - watch out for them.
What is the best selling record Impact have put out?
There are tunes which sold equal numbers: "Can you feel it" & "My own" which are both my tunes.
What produces do you rate?
I rate anyone who puts out good, happy music!
How long have you been a DJ?
I've been DJing for 4 to 5 years.
What's been your biggest event to DJ on?
The biggest event I played at was Vision at Popham - 30,000+
What different types of music do you play?
I'm fairly versatile - lately I've been playing up North & on the South Coast which requires playing a happy, stompy set, but if a promoter wanted me to play Jungle I can play it - so I can fit in with whatever the music policy is.
Have you played abroad?
I've played in Miami, Switzerland & I'm playing in Austria in a couple of weeks & over Christmas I'm playing in Australia - so I'm starting to do more work abroad.
Do you like working with MC's?
Sometimes with some of them.
What DJ's do you rate?
I rate all DJ's that can mix & I like to listen to other DJ's unique styles of music.
As well as hardcore, what other types of music do you listen to?
I listen to Classical music, Rock 'n' Roll - Some times I listen to Garage (I'm very versatile to what I listen to!)
Telephone rings & I go and answer the phone as you do! (While I'm on the phone, Seduction for some strange reason decides to add a few things to the interview!!)
(Seduction) Long Sigh! The cunt's interviewing me & He's on the blower - What a pisstaker!! The cunts event got me smoking cigars! (Terry Turbo is a bad influence on me!)
Who do you think you've been a successful DJ?
People have always recognised me as being a good mixer: I always play music which gets the crowds jumping, these are probably the two main reasons.
And finally your shouts?
There are too many to mention - but I want to say hello to everyone that knows me - Not forgetting Helen (The Misses)!
Many thanks to DJ Seduction for allowing the Scene magazine to kidnap him after his DJ set at 'One Nation' - Did you know that since our interview Seduction has made friends with a plastic parrot, has a really bad habit for smoking cigars & has even left 'I'll be back' on his answering machine!!
The Scene Magazine asks it's readers - if you see DJ Seduction please ask him how his Parrot is? (Watch his face)

LABRYNTH - Review
Having never been to a Labrynth party before and only been to Club Labrynth a couple of times, I arrived at the rocket not knowing what to expect.
I was greeted by the Rocket Security who actually treated me like a person not a ticket.
As I entered the main hall, the first thing I noticed was the buzz from the crowd. Nice people having a good time and why not, what a party!
The Rocket had been transformed by Labrynth with some wild backdrops and a stage that was alive with action dancers dressed in black with little puppets standing on their feet, glowing in U.V. light, one dancer dressed as a ghost, Jugglers and lots more.
The muslc and some of the MCing (Nice one Nicky) was being supplied by some of my favourite D.J.s: Nicky Blackmarket, Rap, Kenny Ken, Dougal, as for who played the best set, Labyrnth had the best set of DJ's I've heard in a long time.
A big thankyou to Joe & Sue for one of the best nights out I've had in a long time. See you at Club Labrynth soon!

Desire at the Roller Express - Sat 27th August
After picking up the flyer for this event I noticed the event was at the Roller-Express, recently the Roller has been given a Bad name by a small majority of troublemakers - we went down to see if these problems had been Ironed out - We got to the Roller at 12.30 am - and there was a massive queue & a full car park - which indicated we were going to have a wicked night out. Once inside the venue we walked around. 3 arenas of Dance Music. In arena one - DJ's like Hype, Randall & Ellis Dee got the place jumping - with a thumping sound system & a wicked laser and light show which made this probably one of the best events at the Roller Express this year - Arena 2 was a chillout Room with House, Garage, Techno & Trance being delivered by Desires resident DJ's - Mellows & Matt Maurice & an outstanding set by Sarah Chapman. On to Arena 3 - which was being taken care of by Eruption FM - with DJ's like Crossfade, Nicky Blackmarket, & the Demolition crew keeping things busy! The bottom line was there was no trouble Roller Express on this night - It was an attitude free, safe rave which Desire have got a good name for. The place was packed until the end & we have been told that they are doing there last event at the Roller Express on the 1st October - watch out for that!! Big Respect to Phil & Mick - Wicked Party

Interview
SUBURBAN BASE RECORDS
INTERVIEW
SUBURBAN BASE HAVE CHURNED OUT A LOT OF EXCELLENT MUSIC & HAVE GAINED A LOT OF RESPECT OVER THE YEARS - TODAY WE SPOKE TO MR. SUB BASE HIMSELF - DANNY DONNELLY (TAKE 2)
How did Suburban Base start?
Suburban Base started in 1990 - Before the Label started we opened Boogie Town Records - I was 17 at the time & I got a bank loan. The shop run well for 6 months & we realised to compete & get a good reputation we had to sell exclusive music in the forms of white label records. This made us start Suburban Base & we started making our own music.
How did the name come about?
We were thinking of different names for the label & a lot of our music contains sub-base.
Were also based in the suburbs of London, we are also on the suburbs of the music business - so Suburban Base was the most suited name for our Record Label.
Who influenced you music wise?
The label as a whole is influenced by a Hip Hop type of background - which a majority of us come from. A lot of the early Hip Hop pioneers & some Reggae artists are what you could call influences, really.
As well as Hardcore & Jungle what other types of Music do you listen to?
Hip Hop, Jazz & a lot of Rare Groove.
What is your opinion of the Jungle Scene at the moment?
It will be a shame if it all starts separating out - there's a ragga element which the media seem to have really picked up on & are making a big issue about! But that is not all it is! Jungle is a much wider & varied scene than just the Ragga element.
How many Artists do Suburban Base have?
We have a large amount of artists who work for us & we are signing new ones every week. It's very hard to give an exact number or list as it changes all the time.
A lot of people believe that dubplates are being played too long before they are released, what's your opinion on this?
There are good and bad points on this. It's a good promotional technique, you get it to the top DJ's, they run it for a while & you get your records heard everywhere, but on the bad side, it could get on to a mix tape way to early & it can completely mess up your sales. I don't think its right when DJ's only play Dubplates. I think they should do a mixture of plates and records which the punters know.
Do you enjoy doing live P.A.'s?
I don't do any at the moment, our artists are still doing them, we do a lot of work abroad & its good for the label when we get a show case P.A. booking.
How do you see the Rave scene in a couple of years time?
I know it will still be around - there are a lot of people who rely on it to let it die! I can't really predict what will happen but I hope it carries on & gets better.
What MC's do you rate?
A lot of them are commanding silly money at the moment, and they chat over the records too much. There are few I rate, MCGQ - being my favourite.
What other labels do you rate at the moment?
Anyone who is sincere, there are a lot of people trying to jump on the Bandwagon, people who have stuck with it & got through the hard times, RAM records, Moving Shadow are a few. We don't really compete, we all help each other, this is how all businesses should run.
What plans do you have for the future?
To keep doing what we're doing, to continue to enjoy what I'm doing & to enjoy working with my friends. That's about it really.
SCENE: Well Danny thanks for you time and keep up the good work & from all the Scene

DOUBLE DIPPED REVIEW
We arrived at the venue at 9.30 pm & already there was a massive queue - the doors opened at 10 PM sharp and surprisingly the queue was moved through a nice pace & by 11PM the venue started to get busy! The people behind Double Dipped also run Ravescene Magazine, so they do know how to put on a good, friendly party with no bad attitudes! All the DJ's in the main arena played well - sets of the night goes to Ellis Dee & DJ Sy - Big respect to Mc Melody & Mc Free & Easy who kept all the hardcore ravers hyper until 6am. Going into other rooms - club classics were being played in the mastercuts room with all the '88 & '89 Anthems being played for the old timers like myself & a bit of House & Techno being played in all the other rooms. All in all a mental party & when you here about any event being held at Bagleys make sure you go - It must be the best venue in London. Many thanks to Gaven & Josh for the Guest List & a wicked party! See you at the next Double Dipped .
Cheers 10/10

Interview
BOOGIE TIMES RECORDS
After a short drive to Romford in Essex, we arranged an Interview with Boogie Times manager Winston 'Run Tings' who has made a lot of music for Suburban Base. He also DJ's & runs the shop while Danny Donnelly runs the Suburban Base Record Label, here's the story.
When was Boogie Times Records established?
It was first opened in September 1989 & I started to work with Danny in December 1989.
Where did the name come from?
Its of a record called 'Boogie times' - which was around at the time of opening the shop.
Who works in the shop at present?
Danny Breaks, DJ Ash & myself at present - but if I get stuck I can always ring up and get some other DJ's who regularly come in the shop to help out.
What different types of music do you stock?
We stock Jungle, Drum & Bass, Hardcore, House, Swingbeat, Hip Hop, a bit of Jazz - really most forms of Dance Music.
Why do you think people buy records from your shop - instead of other shops?
I think we have a very wide selection of music & we offer a good service. These are the two main reasons.
What do you think of the ravescene at the moment?
At the moment I think it has reached its highest peak ever - with Ticket and Record sales doubling this year!
What sells the most in you shop, House, Hardcore or Jungle?
Jungle & Drum & Base sells the best at the moment, although House & our other music does sometimes overtake Jungle music sales.
What top DJ's shop at Boogie Times?
Every top DJ either buying Records or collecting promos comes into our shop. It's quite funny, as a lot of our customers don't know that Andy C or Hype is standing next to them when they are buying their records.
How did you get involved in the shop?
I've known Danny for years & when I lost my Job working an our price type record shop, he asked me to work for him & I've worked here ever since.
And finally any shouts?
Yes, Danny & all Sub Base artists, all our customers & everyone that knows me.
Well Winston thanks for your time - Good Luck with any music you make and keep up the DJing.
See you soon - Royston.
