Take advantage by sending press releases when ever fresh twoons are on plates or tape.. DDD NEWS/REVIEWS JUNGLE SPLASH Three weeks after a kicking Jungle fever in the Sanctuary in Milton Keynes, I discovered that the next date on the Prestige schedule would be the ICA Club in Ipswich, East Anglia. I wasn't impressed at first but I was soon ta change my mind. We reached at about 11.00pm, security was friendly if not a bit sparce compared to some London venues, although it was clear from that start that they wouldn't be in any great demand. We were met at the entrance by the boys from Rebellious Promotions who showed us around (nice one) and left us to our own devices, so we made our way to da stage with a nice bottle of Moet in tow (Big shout to the Rebellious Crew). As we entered the main arena we were confronted with a wall of clean crisp sound correct in all areas, Leicester's home grown talent DJ SS was the first man in effect rolling sweet, next up was London's very own Kool's (with a 'K') Rodney T followed by da great Grooverider, the crowd seemed privileged ta have a man of dis stature at their local club and finally a personal bonus for me Jumping Jack Frost, bad na bitch! The MCs were mostly local but carried through well, MC Contagious impressed me particularly as he seemed that he was never trying ta take over the music (he jus flowed with it!), maybe one ta look out for? By three O'clock the night was all to quickly over, which was a shame coz by then my view on this East Anglia venue had considerably changed! The crowd although not cork up was a reasonable one and those who turned up ta jam, jammed, me 'n' My Man B included.!! This Caribbean night club along with Rebellious Promotions certainly deserve some credit, what with some of the countries top DJs, a crisp sound system, kickin' krowds and at only £7 a shot, ya kan't go wrong! Big shout ta Rebellious Promotions, da Champers crew, Prestige Magazine, ICA Massive and all da Jump-Up Posse in Ipswich...Dis is Fergy to the bridge "Beam me up Scotty!?!" Some More Reviews "Highly Recommended" - Formation Records Packed with sensational juicy tracks oozing with hard-stepping Drum & Bass Jungle, definatley one to have at Christmas - a hallmark for the future! For every hard-stepper! "Drum & Bass 5" - Suburban Base Records Indeed the daddy album if you ain't got it yet, hurry while stocks last. Amongst the chunkiest beats are "Supa Sharp Shooter" and "Warp 9 Mr Zulu". "Ruff 'n' Ready" - Higher Limits This one comes like it's name sake. Some of my favourites are "Final Chapter" by Trace, "Babylon" by Splash, "Whee Up" and of course "Ruff 'n' Ready". "Snare Pressure" - Pterodactyl Records A wickedly selected album with tracks like "Breakpoint", "The Herb" - by Dub Culture and "Subliminal Boogie" by Dexterous. Dangerous Dub Part II A great collection of rinsed dub sounds totally out of this world. This is one for the dub wise head. "Renegade Selection Vol II" What can I say, simply contains smash after smash of various styles of Jungle from Drum & Bass, to Hardstep to what is termed Intelligent. I must say I not only love the content, but every beat of this album. More albums should be compiled as such. Page 6 PRESTIGE Magazine

RADIO Starting this Christmas Kool Fm and Prestige Magazine bring-you a 2 hour radio show with a difference.Using the very best radio Djs and Mcs the monthly show will slam new floor jam-mers ranging fom hard beats to the soft rolling staff. During the show the Mc's will present valuable information about the tracks being played so that listeners can learn a bit more about names of tracks, producers and labels. This will be, of course, presented in the most lyrical way possible as only Kool FM's Mcs can.Definitely this is the ideal show for all tru Junglists seeking knowledge path to future beats. Hosting the first show will be Mampi Swift (featured in this issue) and Mc Navigator, followed the next month by Tonic and Rema Dee,Brockie and Dett and so on. Listen out for further infor on Kool 94.5 FM. FORWARD LOOKS By Carla Harp 1996 will be vicious with plenty of new ideas being wielded into producing tracks. It is likely that the music will be as this part of the year by this time next year, as has been the cycle since day one. It is also likely that more labels will begin to combine hard and soft stingers on one vinyl to maximise audience rates. This is a principle which is now gaining momentum. This is the producer that made "Jail House Rave" in 1991. "Gangsta's Paradise" is his latest track along with "Make The Speakz Pop" which is being review in this issue. Cantangerous' "Gangsta's Paradise" is the one with the stevie Wonder sample and I believe dubs are with Kenny Ken, Gachet and Nicky BlackMarket. "This twoon is runnin'", Cantangerous announced when I met him briefly. From what we 've heard it's pure hard beats and mad samples. Cantangerous, who has been working with Kickin' Underground Sounds (KUS) is due to release other tracks in the coming months including "Law & Orders" and "It's Alright". At the moment Hip-Hop plays a big influence in Cantangerous's music but he does use other musical influences. Shouts to Prizna, all the DJs, all Pirates and everyone else in the scene. Skool of Hard Knocks By Triple Dee If you 'ave been waiting to hear what producer Dancemaster of Grand Larceny has in store after "Kan You Feel It" (nothing can save ya) the read on... Darksteppa's is what's runnin' next. How you mean! Well a new production team called Darksteppa's have joined the grand Larceny label. Darksteppa's EP with solid hard twoons. These twoons are called "Ya Darksteppas", "Yes I Make Ye Move", "1000 Barz", "The Riddle, "Bad Arsz" and "Speed Cop", all these tracks are produced by darksteppa's. Grand Larceny plan to release an album sometime in the Summer of '96. PROMOTERS TAKE NOTE By Richard Shepherd With recent events that have taken place up North, artists are not confident with the security provision given to them by most promoters outside London. As a result grey areas have appeared on the relationship of Agents and Promoters. The main area being the Agents control over DJs booked by Promoters. Should DJs not be able to turn up for a set for reasons outside the Agents realm then this should be a matter between the Promoter and the DJ. In any case no artist should have to perform at any venue if reasonable threat of their security is anyhow threatened. Security has been a subject of much interest throughout this year. A further look at security is on page ............ TERRY IN THE JUNGLE ANYONE? So Christmas is here and the sackful of Charity records are just about to hit the streets. By far the worst is 'Dance Floral' Terry Wogan in the jungle; an insipid interpretation where the Irish Jig meets Drum & Bass in aid of Children in Need. By the sound of this there's going to be a lot of Junglists in Need when this one comes out. In need of a sick bag that is! No need to fret too much though S.O.U.R Label Head David Stone believes the best form of defence is attack. After hearing the record he immediately began plotting a way of stopping Terry in his tracks. With the help of Sid Owen and Patsy Palmer (aka Ricky and Bianca), Stone has recorded a ballad called 'Better Believe It (Children in Need)' which will be released on T.D.M Records. "As soon as I heard the Wogan tune I thought 'Oh f*!?' I better do something to stop this. Christmas is bad enough with the obligatory family round the T.V Queens speech business, never mind having Terry Wogan poppin' up every two minutes!" 'Better Believe It' is available on the 4th Dec. with 50% of the profits going to Children in Need. With Karaoke and 'Eat Your Handbag' interpretations making up some of the five mixes there's no cheesy jungle lick in sight. Who'd have thought we'd have Ricky and Bianca to thank ?

CLUB REVIEW AWOL London - SW1 Club In four weeks of observing AWOL from 7th October, these are our findings. Just on the opening night at least 1,000 people were turned away... High standards as those of the Paradise days and the more recent monthly's at the Ministry are well in effect at AWOL at the SW1 Club in Victoria Street, London. There are four things that make a rave the best or the worst. These are in order of preference; reputation or hype, management, line-up and venue. Hype is a temporary function. In the case of AWOL, hype does not come into play as reputation stems from years of success. The reputation extends from the crowd, to the management and the DJs. The famous line-up of Kenny Ken, Mickey Finn, Dr S Gachet, Randall and G.Q goes back to the Paradise Club days in Islington N1. The AWOL management is firmly geared towards high levels of achievement by taking a hands on approach to making it the weekend slam champion of all weekly events. The current line up has developed to include MC Fearless and Darren Jay. This is the team that is making AWOL the Jungle music school of future beats. In just one set we managed to listen to Darren Jays' display which included "Woo Tang" by DJ Stretch, "It Began In Africa" on the Back 2 Basics label, "I Love You" by DJ Rap,"Murder One" the rinsing dub plate on Trouble on Vinyl and "The Flute" by Bikey + Dizzy. Part of the reason for the success is that the DJs work as a team as opposed to DJs coming to challenge each other. After years of playing together a rapport develops between the DJ because they have played together all the time. This is probably one reason why at AWOL you rarely hear the same twoons being rinsed out over and over again. SW1 Club was refurbished before AWOL moved in and an Electrovoice Sound System installed by Eskimo Noise. Filled with a wickedly happy Jungle crowd, it is the best club to be in on a Saturday night and is fast starting to rival major one off events. In the four weeks that we went to AWOL, the security were decent, the toilets clean with toilet roll still intact at 5.30am check (you don't know how essential these little things are to the raver). It's nice to see DJs not only mixing the styles of Jungle but also playing a selection of classic Jungle, fresh vinyl's and super charged plates. If you haven't been to AWOL yet, but have obviously heard the rumors (incidentally we featured AWOL in Issue 3 Vol 1), it's a wonderful experience that one can only understand after having been. Remember to arrive well early, the queues are massive! You can catch AWOL on the following dates over the Christmas and New Year period... Every Saturday at The SW1 Club, with the Christmas Party on Monday 25th December at the Ministry of Sound, and back to The SW1 Club for the New Years Party on Sunday 31st December. See Club listings for further information. GQ & FATTS - AWOL Page 8 PRESTIGE Magazine

NEWS ITEMS NEW LOOKS By Richard Shepherd Look our for Razor Edge a new side label to Metalheadz which is going to be primarily releasing remixes form the back catalogue list. The releases are due in 1996. Another side label to look out for attached to Metalheadz is Head to Head. Head to Head is due to have it's first release in early 1996. The label will operate using several artists working together on selective new music materials as is implied from the label name. Other new labels to hit the streets this year are: Blackcat, which releases it's first track in December called the Blackcat EP. The Blackcat Premiere Cru consists of several producers who are geared towards producing not one style of Jungle but varying Hardstep, experimental Drum & Bass and other styles using Ambient, Jazz, Soul and any other music sources which can be made to roll. Big up Nick and Dean. Pterodactyl Records has been releasing tracks for a while, but have lacked proper media attention until recently. Based in South East London they are producing some serious experimental Drum & Bass Jungle, using sounds previously unchallenged to bring a unique sound. This label released it's first album snare Pressure at the end of November. Emotive, a side label of SOUR launched flamboyantly recently makes it's debut release with................................ Dread, dread by name, Dread by production. This is the master remixer Ray 'Re-touch' keith, some releases have been 'Ninja Rinse", and "Yes Yes". All in all there have been 40 new labels this year with an estimated 100 more new labels for 1996

ARTICLES PHANTASY 'Open Our Eyes/What Is Love' (Release date early December) There's two names that are involved in this project, two names that are indelibly heat forged on the Drum & Bass Jungle musical and raving consciousness. One is DJ Phantasy, veteran DJ of the Hardcore circuit right back to the '88 Summer of Love which everybody remembers but nobody remembers much of (!) and the other is Desire Promotions - long time rave promoters again, right back to the 'illegal' days! Having come back fresh from ravers paradise Ibiza in the late '80's Steve Phantasy came back to the UK full of dissess, knowing that he could do better, raring to go after a stint in Ibiza's 'Long Play' club. Such enthusiasm led to appearances at such legendary events as Biology, Raindance and Energy and a sparkling DJing career frequenting modern events today like World Dance, Dreamscape, Helter Skelter, Pandemonium and Fantazia. "Drum & Bass Jungle is forever changing", says Steve Phantasy, lounging in his North London abode, "And that's why I've taken that road since the beginning. It's where my heart is. also what I love about this scene is that everyone rubs off everyone - it's always revolving and developing to new peaks". "Open Our Eyes" has a shipwrecked rolling feel that can quite easily take you someplace with it's fibre optic bass progression and misty vocals refrains, a great record from an A&R representative to herald the opening of the Desire family label. "What is Love" is one of those happy/hard bitz that has you smiling without even realising, while your shoulders do the see saw! It's yours! by Alex C. SWIFT & ZINC 'Fatters/12 O Clock Drop' (Release date early December) Anyone with even a bit of current knowledge within the Drum & bass spectrum of Jungle will have jumped up to the cartoon badness of DJ Zinc's "Super Sharp Shooter" on DJ Hype's Ganja Recordings. And with the remix already tearin' it up all over DJ Zinc, along with long time pal Swift is rising through the percussive ranks like dough in a hot oven. We have already featured Swift + Zinc in Issue 1 and again with a preview of "Super Sharp Shooter" in Issue 7. And with such beats at last gaining this East London DJing duo the recognition they deserve the chances are that Swift + Zinc's first release on Sophisticated Underground Sounds, the right people that brought you the 'Desire' series of raves right from wayback is going to fly off the shelves. But first, the surprise, "Fatters" is not a jump-up in-you face gun posing brow furrowing badness composition in the vein of Sharp Shooter. In Ben Zinc's words "It's schmove, swirly and musically bassy - mellow mate!". And with such goosebumpliy subliminal progression here, Swift's tearingly Amenned hot flash of flammable fluid on the flip is certainly one to take you back to reality. And having DJed on pirates like Eruption, Impact & Format as well as producing the 'S+Z' Volumes 1 to 8 on Brain Progression Recordings, busting bitz on Sub Base, Frontline and the aforementioned Ganja and remixing for Droppin' Science amongst others, it's time that Ben-Ji-Man(!) Zinc and Trevor Swift were given the column space they deserve. Er, for real man !! by Alex C. Page 12 PRESTIGE Magazine

Let's talk about the HYPE By Lena Gubine DJ Hype, one of the notorious names in the Jungle world, known for his many distinctive Ganga tunes, as well as being voted '94's No 1 DJ of the year. Being a fan for years I had great pleasure in interviewing this veteran of all sorts, to know his thoughts and feelings on an ever changing scene.

Interview
PROFILE DJ HYPE Talking about himself... I feel what makes me different from any other DJ is my technical skills and my style. I write, engineer and produce all my work in my studio. I can also DJ three and four deck mixing, I don't get time to practice through the week, even though I'd like to. In the meantime I listen to Hip-Hop, Opera, Yard tapes, Ambient, Rap, old Breakbeats, in fact I've got virtually every fu*king Breakbeat possible at home. The only style I don't listen to is Rock. Music I make is going to change direction from my last track onwards. Before, in the studio, if it sounds good, use it. The rules are, there are no rules. Now, the music will be the same, however vocals will have some consciousness. The aggression will be in the music rather than the samples. Talking about Ganja... In '94 I set up the Ganja Record label. Most of the Ganja releases have been mine except Ganja 2 by Pascal. People like Back 2 Basics, Pascal, Krome + Time and Andy C have remixed for me. Ganja 8 and 9 are doing considerably well, also the feedback has been great. However, Ganja Records might not be around much longer, I'll probably link up with Pascal and set up a new label called G-Line. Frontline and Ganja might not be used, but remember, nothing is definite. The album will be released in January which Pascal is involved in. All I can say it's going to be all new stuff, remixes of a few old tracks, but everything is exclusive. Talking about views on the scene's life... Every year people might prefer one DJ. Every DJ has their five minutes where they're man of the moment, then you go back under, not right down though. I want to stay at a level where I'm in the top category but I'm not No 1 in your face all the time, as what happens everyone gets sick of your face. I think the art of success in this game is being able to have some mystery about you. Not giving away everything. Not being nicey nicey to everybody. People like to take the piss and get you involved in a back stabbing game which ends up being 'Big Girls Blouse' arguments after all. So I try and keep away from all of that. Anyway there's a lot of unity between recording artists, then DJs as we have more competition. It's a friendly competitiveness, it's nothing dramatic like phoning up promoters saying "Don't book him, book me", it's a competitiveness that is good because I know I can't slack off as someone would take my place. Talking about what's unfair and what upsets you about the scene... What's unfair is going down to Music House. I feel I'm on a jail sentence, the amount of dubs getting cut are monstrous. Most people go there as other companies are too expensive. The fact is there's enough talented people on the scene who don't get a look in. Every year in this business it gets's harder for new DJs and artists to break through. Their not always given the chance they deserve. Also an MCs job is to get the crow hyped up, to enhance everything, to make the night better than it is. Some MCs are good at this, but the rest dictate the rave or sound like their having an argument with their girlfriend. When I go to DJ in the countryside for instance, the local DJ is alright, might not have the same records as me, but he's fine. Now a lot of the MC's are a joke, they're not alright, not even sh*t, they can be the fu*king pits, I can't believe promoters pay these people. I blame the promoters for some MC mismanagement of the Mic. Now you don't go to a rave and someone tells you 'Grooverider was just on, but now some blokes on the decks while Riders gone to the toilet' it doesn't happen, so why do MC's give the Mic to any Tom, Dick or Fred and go off and do their thing, it's a joke. To me it's the promoters fault for allowing them to do it". Talking about playing abroad... I've been to Switzerland, Germany, Canada, Spain and Japan. Germany is the main place I go regularly, about once a month. I have a really good following out there as well as Switzerland, but their scene hasn't really developed, they're about one year behind Germany. I play the same sets as I do here. If anything out there I get to experiment more because the sets are longer. This gives me more freedom to scratch, cut up as abroad they enjoy me doing this. I get a great response from them which encourages me to do more. Talking about Snoop... Snoop is my dog and everyone on the scene knows this dog. I'd brought him as a pet, now he's my mascot. When DJing I get asked "Where's your dog?" sometimes it amazes me that people think I'd take him to a club! The Jungle Fever flyer just gone had Snoop on the front, he has become a part of the Jungle life. Everyone knows him, even as far as New York. Talking about the direction of music being made... I make Breakbeat, I've always made Breakbeat and probaly always will. In this scene, the music has always got the same ingredients, maybe the tempo changes, or one part gets highlighted like everyone's on the bass, then everyone's on the strings or the ragga, but it has always been there in one way or another. The music Pascal and I will make will be contempory to what's going on. If we lead the way, then so be it. We are not planning to. At the moment the music has a clean production, the producers are getting professional. We're all learning off each other. Everyone's on a competitive tip which is great. To me everything is Drum & Bass whether it has got Ragga, Rap or Ambient samples. Last year was prominent Ragga whether you liked it or not. This year has been Rap. I think what's happening is that all the different styles have always been there, it's just now they're becoming more individualised, rather than being classed as one bracket. Before LTJ Buken used to play a set, I would DJ and Vibes would for instance. Now you'll have a night of Bukem, a night of Jungle, a night of Harcore. The big raves cater for this problem, like Dreamscape and World Dance. In town it's more of a specialist night, which personally I don't like because it is breaking up the scene. My ideal night would be to have Fabio, Dougal, me, Bukem, Randall or Clarky all playing under the same roof. It sounds like I'm saying it all sounds the same, it's boring, so a variation in music would be better for the crows and the DJs. I don't know where the scene is going, I think the whole mainstream hype will die off. Talking about the last time when some majors took the music to commercial status. It made some mockery of the music and disorientated a once rising scene... I don't think it will happen this time as blatantly as it did. This time most of the main players are more experienced. People like myself have been in this game the first time it happened, either making or playing the music, and we fu*ked up. Together we are now shrewder and wiser people of the business to let that happen again. We won't let it. Talking about your plans... My plans are to continue with what I'm doing. In an ideal world I'd like to slow down and concentrate on my music, than DJing at so many venues. However each runs parallel to each other so you can't really slack off. DJing can be a battle, you have to be on it every week or you lose. This also helps you to make better music because you understand your audience better. Also I'd like to make all different styles, I'd like to make mellower Jungle Breakbeat, Ambient stuff or whatever you wanna call it. There are so many fu*king names of it. Anyway that would be great, to make that style and be recognised for it. At the moment, I just try and make tunes that are going to drop when i play for the dance floor, which make the crowd go for it. I'd like to go deeper, but time is not of the essence. Shouts to all my friends, family and supporters - Big Up! Page 18 PRESTIGE Magazine

Interview
PROFILE FORMULA 7 MAD 'B' by Triple Dee Mad B of Formula 7 was 11 years of age when his musical intake started. Rare Groove, Jazz, Funk and Soul were the order of the then underground days, with the likes of George Power, Froggy, Chris Hill, Steve Devonne, Derek B and Lynden C spinning the grooves. As Roy Balfourth grew up, music became an integral part of his life. Whilst still a young and immature teenager he got into trouble with the law, ending in 'chains' for 5 years in which he learnt to play the Sax and matured. In 1989 the Acid House scene was in full swing and Roy began to focus his musical skills alongside Shagg + Breeze, Nicky BlackMarket, Pied Piper, Jam Masters, Steve B (on Renk) and the likes of Jaz T on Friends FM 107. He also played out at House of Clubs at the Astoria. Today Mad B has more than 10 releases on the Quayside label and much success. I met up with Mad B recently to get some 'depth' on his thinking. How long did Friends FM last? We lasted three years and had lots of parties. Redemption is a memorable one at Park Royal, it was stopped but 7,500 had attended. What is the hardest thing about being in 'chains'? Not being able to DJ and missing my son. Did you learn anything from the experience? Well, apart from the Sax I learnt that I would not want to go through the same thing again. What was the first track on Quayside Records and what was the main idea? It was called "It's Not Just Ragga" and it has a Jazz piano element with vocal's underlaid by beats and drums creating a heavy B-line. This was in 1990. What do you think of the scene at the moment? It seems people with big cheque books want to commercialise it, but at least let's have some control over it? We shouldn't have to slow down to cater for the larger commercial market. How far would you go with a track? As far as the track can take me, but only with my control over the track i.e. not changing the substance of the track to suit the big companies. This music is marketable we 've only got to develop it further. It takes time and investment. MadB & Easy Bass PRESTIGE Magazine Page 19

FORMULA 7 cont. Who do your dubs generally go to? Kenny Ken, Gachet, Nicky BlackMarket and Ray Keith with test presses going to most DJs. What plans have you for the future? I would like to be successful, maybe to the scale of Sub Bass Records and Moving Shadow. I'm currently working towards that, at present I'm at University studying Music Technology and I shall also be enrolling for a Business and Marketing Course. What is you persona? 5ft 9", very athletic, my aim is to run in the London Marathon and I'm very chatty and can get on with anyone. I normally wear Jeans, trainers and plenty of sportswear. I train three times a week, run 5 miles and eat Fish, Chicken and mainly white meats. What Producers do you respect? Bizzy B for teaching me a lot of things about making music, if not everything. dillinja for his sheer genius in what he does. Adam F, Alex Reese and Wax Doctor. TDK for being the best new producer coming through and Easy Bass, a 13 year old producer. I must say there are lots of good producers making good music, but these are the ones that are exceptional. What's in store? "Brotherhood" Vol 2 is due just before Christmas and the PEP Project due in May '96. We 'ave also signed two new artists to the label called T-Rock and Dub. We are very selective with new producers being signed up and if anyone reading this article thinks they have the right qualities they can contact me on 0181 221 1142 or 0831 135907. Shouts to Direct Dance Distribution, Jody, Carly, Dianne, Chris P, Dodge, Bizzy, TDK, Nicky, Ray Keith, Gachet, Kenny Ken, Zinc, Steve B and everyone else that's supported us, including Dad, Pressure Records - Scotland, Janie Myerson - USA, Friends 90.7FM.

Interview
PROFILE SUBJECT 13 Over the past year or so the dedication to the world of Break Beat have presented us with some excellent artists producing 12" and albums of the highest calibre. Many unknowns alongside well established artists like Goldie have worked relentlessly in breaking down certain barriers, and stigmars and have forced certain sectors to take note of what's going on where they once turned up their noses. That's why Sun 13 has always held the maximum respect for the pioneers like Fabio, Grooverider, LTJ Bukem, Ray Keith at Blackmarket and all the other DJs and artists out there on the scene. Everyone of them has helped to mold and shape what we have today. To create something out of nothing is a great feat, because I'll be dammed if anybody's gonna give it to you for free. So to those already on the road keep moving and to those just setting out, be patient, work hard and your time will come. To us in 13 a good attitude is essential, we ain't tripping and we ain't treading on anyone's toes, we're just doing our thing and we'll let the music do the talking. A wise old man once said to us "Only disrespect those who disrespect you, and always open your ears, but follow your nose", I'll never forget that. It has always been said that we're workaholics and yes, it's true we admit that, but that's just eh way we are, hungry for the vibe. Our relentless workrate has built up a back catalogue of tracks which we decided to distribute to other labels, such as Creative Source, Dread Recordings, Basement Records and Vibes Recordings. All labels we feel are creatively and financially capable of giving our corner the right profile it needs. In between that we're just finalising the signing of a couple of new artists to our label, as well as preparing to start work on our first album which is due for release sometime next year. The album will consist of many different styles from the Jazz through to the hard-steppers style. Also some experimental new ideas which we are keeping quiet about until it's released and on the street, but you can guarantee the 13 to come up with something new and slightly different from the norm. To us it's all about breaking new ground and discovering new things, then incorporating that into your own style. It's important to us to have our own style, it's taken us time to develop both musically and culturally, that's why we know the break beats are a way of life, it's a culture in itself. And the proof is there in how it managed to survive and expand into other shores of the world, it's exciting to see. Respect and support for our scene, so let's strive to continue. We've seen many artists come and go whether for financial reasons or musical reasons who knows, but it happens, we went through tough times where things weren't smooth, you make bad moves or stuff like that but the main thing is to keep going and learn from your mistakes in life and don't look back. Believe in what your doing and be patient because when it's your time, it's just your time. Anyway a big thanks to Fab, Groove, Danny, Ray, Intense Phyzix, Phil and Lance and all who know us, most of all Joe Public - Peace Out. Page 20 PRESTIGE Magazine

Dangerous Dangerous was hosted at Hastings Pier with DJs Mickey 'Bad Boy' Finn rollin' some cold dark off beats when we arrived. Grooverider was next followed by that wicked producer and rinser SS, covered by MC Warren G (Big Up Warren G). Ronnie Size set speed with dupplate after plate with MC Dynamite doing to the do on the mic. Then came LTJ Bukem playing very much his once unique style of drifting, thumping ambient orientated Drum & Bass Jungle. MC Conrad and MC Det covered Bukem with contrasting work. A lot of people thought it would never work but the crowds loved it (I must admit so did I). Roni 'Full Cycle' Size once again returned to cate for J.J Frost's absence. The last set was dealt with by Kenny Ken, the man who can rock any dance. The crowd was just jumping, but was in a state of mass dance frenzy. After the set the crowds were begging for more and got a half run of vinyl that had to be rewound due to the hysterical effect it had on the Hastings massive. The most amazing thing was to see hundreds of Junglists rocking de nite proper, yet nuff dappers too. The dress sense of the crowds was wild. U.S.A. PARTY "Junglized" the Sub Base Orlando Do By Scott Manion, Dub Shack, Chicago Suburban Base and Junglized Infozine dropped one of the most ambitious and hardest all Jungle line ups ever to touch down in the United States. X-amount of positive vibe running as Junglist crews came in from the USA to witness the dub plates drop. All crews present to give the proper welcome to London's finest. Sub Base brought together Andy C, Marvellous "Killer" Cain, Kool FM's DJ Ash, Orlando's AK1200, DJ Jeffee, Karl K from Philly, Josh Swissman from Los Angeles and Chicago's JJ Jellybean alongside MCs Sponge, Dub 2 and the man like the Warp Factor 10 and Rude Bwoy Monty to run the night. The King Chalice Sound System provided the bass line, and believe me London, the USA has never had that much acetate in one room. All US Crews came correct for this one. Here's how it happened... FRIDAY The buzz on this one was wicked. Junglized, 2 Tuff, U-Buzzin and Dub Shack phone lines spread the words to the massives. Caravans were organised and flights purchased. Sub Base had put together a roadblock and by the day of the show, tickets were hard to come by. Chicago's Dub Shack crew made it into town Friday afternoon. A quick ride to the suite and damn, the phone lines already bubblin. L.A.'s 119 Junglists touching down alongside the New York crew already mash up. Those boys had been in town since Thursday night and had locked down rooms at the Royal Knights Suites alongside the London Crew (heard the pool was great). SATURDAY The Metro Skating Ring is a massive venue. Usually rammed with rude boys firin' and girls butterflying to the latest dancehall riddim, tonight this hall belonged to the Junglist. X-amount of respect due the King Chalice Sound System. With a semi-trailer of bass bins, the system was runnin'. As preparations of the venue began, crews from across the US began dropping by. Jungle Nut and U-Buzzin representing New York, Houston and Baltimore's 2-Tuff Crew, Tampas Hard Science Crew, Dread from St.Pete and John Hustle's Roughneck Massive (sorry I missed you mate). Philly, L.A. and Chicago all stopped by to share a spliff, pass "A.T" and talk technique. Chicago's Jellybean, last to make it, ran into a bit of trouble... turns out the DAT sent in from Leeds arrived late and he spent most of Saturday dubs for the show. Shouts to Jellybean and the Leeds massive for sorting Chicago proper. 10" case in hand, Jellybean arrived just in time to catch the last hit. By showtime the vibe was electric and after months of anticipation the crowd was ready. London, you don't know how lucky you are to have your choice of 3-4 events per weekend all with top line-ups and all Jungle bills. So for the purist on the night, those crews who travelled miles to pay respect to London's Junglists DJs this night was a roadblock. Orlando's DJ Jeffee got the night runnin with a set that immediately got the hotties butterflying. Jeffee's raggery jump up style got the crowd into the dance immediately. L.A's original 119 Junglist, Josh Swissman, came up to the decks next, adding a harder more mashed edge to the sound. This was Josh's first drop in Florida causing an instant sellout of his mix tape even before his set was finished. Nice one. Next up Sub Base USA recording artist and Junglized resident AK1200 proved that you don't need to be a Brit to drop bombs on the night rinsing dub after dub of original and upfront London style bizzness. With a set of mashed drum & Bass and smooth rollers, AK1200 had the skills to run with the London crew. ANDY C. Page 26 PRESTIGE Magazine

PROFILE SWIFT UNDER SURVEILLANCE! D is a very special agent 00B reporting for duty. My assignment was to accost and infiltrate the subversive network known to mere mortal men as KOOL FM. My duties included to intercept and interrogate various DJs 'n' MCs from the aforementioned group Kool FM, and to foresee any ramifications which can effect the national security of music as we know it. A very heavy burden has been thrust upon my shoulders and I aim to complete my mission by any means necessary. Due to obvious reasons, i.e. maintaining my unnoticed surveillance operation, my reports will be broadcast on a monthly period and will include all known and unknown members of this group, as well as passing on the low-down on each person's news of and course their views upon the music scene! My first mission was to seek out DJ Swift at the Music House and proceed to a secret location in which the following conversation took place...read on...if you dare! Swift has been known to have been playing at Kool FM for a period of approximately 3 years, ever since staring as a guest at Kool FM '92 Christmas bash. Previously there have been sightings at the Lazerdrome, VIP, Thunder & Joy and One Nation. Confirmed sightings at many places since. Question and Answers transcript follows. How did you feel when you first started to play Jungle to the people? Well, when ya first start out as a DJ an ya out raving you think, I wonder what it would be like to play here? But when ya do play there it's very good, ya know that you've accomplished something. I know you play out quite a lot now, but where do you enjoy playing the most? Everywhere I play, I enjoy spreading the Jungle vibe, but where I get the most enjoyment has gotta be at Fever and VIP bashes, oh and in Bristol coz they appreciate good music and know how ta have a wicked time. We know Jungle has taken you abroad, but to which countries have you helped to plant the Jungle seeds in? Well, I've been to Austria and Amsterdam among other places and I'm playing in Switzerland in December '95. What type of venue do you prefer to play at? It's a wicked feeling when your in front of a big crowd at a rave or large event an everybody's jumping up an going wild to what your playing, but it can be nice in a club as well coz ya can get a nice tight underground rave. Where do you think the Jungle scene is going? Well that depends on how it's promoted! Kool FM are one of (if not the) first to set up a proper system to promote and move Jungle forward and to safeguard the artists rights, and they do so very professionally. Yup! With Kool it's not just one style of Jungle. We don't give you just one lick such as Ragga, ya get to give all kinds like Drum & Bass, Hip-Hop samples and lots of others. With Kool ya get to play right across the music spectrum while others stick ta trying to promote one style of music! Some people are working very hard to bring Jungle forward to people who don't have a chance to hear it. Do you think this is going well? It's going all right, but coz Jungle ain't been around so long, it's early dayz yet. There's still nuff ground to cover. Some people have been saying that Jungle's already peaked. What do you think? I have noticed that more and more DJs are turning to Jungle and that's a good example, it shows that it is still spreading. It's still exploding abroad aswell. In Japan the Jungle scene is still growing like wildfire, what are your views on it? They love the ragga lick of Jungle. I think that Jungle is going to go a lot further than Hip-Hop went and have a longer lasting effect. It will also have strong ramifications on the way the music scene is heading. I agree, Jungle will always have a strong influence on the shape of things to come! At Kool we think it's very important not to have a blinkered view of things or to put it another way, not have one view, that's why on Kool all the DJs play in a different style to one another so people can get a taste of all kinds of Jungle, be it Drum & Bass, Seductive, Intelligent, Ragga, Hip-Hop, Soul or otherwise. Where do you see yourself in the future? I aim to keep on DJing and I want to move into production and get some vinyl's on the go, possibly an album but I'll just have ta keep on doing my homework. INFORMATION UPDATE According to our latest intelligence reports DJ Swift is not, repeat IS NOT a resident DJ at this time, so all you club promoters get ya fingers dialling his number. For bookings call: 0181-806 0996. VINYL UPDATE Swift has been known to have introduced X-amount of vinyl's into the mainstream public. PRODUCERS TAKE CONTROL! Following the massive response from 'What is PRS?' in our last issue, we thought it appropriate to venture deeper in the ways in which producers may have more control over their music. Apart from the conventional areas that PRS can collect performance monies on your behalf there is another area which needs much discussion. This is the area of performance of DJs at raves and the mix tapes generated from these live public performances. The Mix Tape issue is not dealt with by PRS, but by a similar body called MCPS. The question which hangs before resolution is whether promoters should pay producers for records played by DJs to the public. Within the realm of producers there are three schools of thought with distinctive views. The first being that promoters should pay a percent rate to producers for live performances and in addition a further percent rate on mix tapes based on revenue generated. The second is from producers who think a set fee should be set on mix tapes but not on rave performance. The third view is less rational by suggesting that only a set percentage fee should be set on mix tapes, but not on rave performance. On analysis the views from the first two schools of thought seems rather unreasonable and is by all means un-forceable. Further to that promoters traditionally have supported the music by giving it the means to be played at raves, hence the name promoters in reference to promoting the music. This traditional aspect should not be neglected in consideration. However with mix tapes considerable evidence illustrates the damage done to record sales thus reasonable justification for the third view which insists that tracks on mix tapes should be paid for to the producer by the promoter. In all eventualities it is a matter for producers and promoters to come to some agreement. For PRS live performance of producers work this is a most complex area which is being trodden on carefully. Just as the Mix Tape issue is one that the MCPS is taking very much seriously. For producers to take control over their music joining membership of these and other organisations which we will be featuring within Finance Pages is of paramount to the further development of Jungle music.

PRS (PERFORMING RIGHT SOCIETY LTD.) "GIVING JUNGLE MUSIC ITS DUE" "Music seems to be freely available, but it is not free. Music is created and owned by somebody, and that somebody, be it DJ/Producer, Songwriter or Music Publisher has a right to ask for payment!" PRODUCERS TAKE NOTE! FOR MEMBERSHIP CONTACT: 29/33 BERNERS STREET, LONDON W1P 4AA Tel: 0171-580 5544 Analysis on the Rave Industry By Carla Harp The Jungle music industry revolves around several rave business sectors, such as Promotion, DJ Management and Agencies, Recording Companies, Security Companies and record Shops. Since September 1994 when the Prestige Magazine Test Plate VIP Issue outlined the Jungle music industry, there has been a large growth in activities in various business sectors. The recording sector has increased by 60% since September 1994 with more than 40 new labels starting up and maintaining momentum. With less than 10 labels ceasing, the over result is positive. We estimate another 100 or so labels starting 1996. The most rapid growth however has been in the activities within the DJ Management and Agency business sector. This growth has not risen by an increase in numbers, but rather in the usage of the service. The usage has increased by 88% since September 1994 with most DJs now only taking bookings through their agents and managers, except special cases. Promotion Houses have remained more or less static, with new promoters coming and going as quickly as they started. The competition and risk for Promotion Houses seems to be a lot higher than any other sector. Then again so are the huge gross profits. The income possible from this area is equally higher, but many new promoters seem to lack the expertise and know how of the more established Promotion Houses. For the industry, we hope for another year of increased activity and production for 1996. It is hard to estimate the overall growth of the whole market for 1996 due to the unknown factor of the music's future. For instance should there be a clear split by the Summer of '96 in the music then our estimate of 100 new stable labels will be proportional to the ration of the split, i.e. the ration of the split is dependant on marketability then sales and promotion levels. As far as distribution is concerned there are two major players SRD and Vinyl Distribution, with other distributors taking a smaller portion in the industry. These are Upfront Vinyl, Jumpstart, Mo's Music and the newly created Xtreme Distribution. There has been several one man distributors who have now either been taken over or ceased trading due to the stiff competition of 1995. We await to see the outcome of the various political ongoings within the scene to see the outcome of another year.

REVIEWS Silver Knuckles Black Cat EP - White Label This EP comes with four different types of Jungle to suit all types of ravers, Ragga, Hardstep, Drum & Bass and Intelligent. The first track comes with a wave of emotion rolling in and out of bumping stop start beats and drifting relieving vocals. The Drum & Bass version commences with a simple piano sample. Which is added to some "yeah yeah" vocals before the twoons blown out of the water by warping Drum & Bass. Then from there on it's a fight to keep standing. Track three sounds like a combination of Jazz, Hip-Hop and rolling drums, with all these factors like the first track it's hard to classify what type of Jungle it is or if it's actually Jungle at all. The ragga Jungle track like most Jungle twoons comes with a mixture of ragga themes and the obvious wheel up, start stop/stop beats. Like the other three twoons it seems a little short, but danceable. Foul Plays Album - Suspected Foul Play Re-Open Your Mind '95 Dreamy sounds and vocals start off this twoon by giving you the idea a smooth swift track will follow, but as usual 'Expect the Unexpected' A wall banger of a remixed Drum & Bass drops in demolishing that idea instantly. Good To U. - Rogue Vs The dream Team - Urban Gorilla – The Rogue Unit Mix "The Rogue Unit" mix starts with nice seductive vocals which are smoothly introduced to some lusting beats. While they make idle chat the twoon swiftly ignites into a passionate love affair of raw indulgent vocals, bass and drums. That's where we leave the now majestic couple to indulge on delicacies, knowing what they produce is an elaborate feeling of pure harmony. – The Dream Team mix If the Rogue side was about Love then this side is definitely about hate! It comes evil with a sublow warping B-line that sounds like a roar of some horrific demon, beats so sharp they come like knifes ripping through the heart and a break in the middle of the track that's so muffled and twisted it sounds like the twoon itself has been strangled and deprived of air. By the time the twoon comes to an end you'll be left shapeless, legless, red eyed and overall battered. River Nile - Prizna "River Nile" is probably one of the first Jungle tracks to come with an Egyptian theme. With a thumping bass line and simple easy to handle beats this twoon comes more one the softer side of things and is definitely a big difference from the elaborate "Fire" hits. The Stepper. Cool Breeze - Digital Audio Swirling strings, floating synth pads and mellow vocals gives this twoon one wicked Jeckyll and Hyde personality, as soon as the B-line drops in it's a desperate fight for control. The B-line just (Triple Dee) Dark, Deadly and Dangerous, if this were a movie it would have grown men sh*ting up themselves and women would wake up screaming for the rest of their lives. This twoons just raw unadulterated evil. Make D Speakerz Pop - Cantankerous (White Label) From when you hear the intro, you know this is gonna be another one of those gangsta bad man twoons, that's designed to wake up the most dismal of dance halls! Dormant beats start out before the twoon literally makes your 'Speakerz Pop' with a returning boomerang of break beats an a B-line that makes a sonic boom sound like a kids lullaby. This is one of the two known rap related twoons by Cantankerous which without a doubt will devastate clubs in times to come. "The number one chief rocker". Mystical Flute - Subject 13 - Vibe Recordings This twoon, in my eyes has no real connection with Jungle. It's made up of an orchestra of enlightened musical compositions gathered together with some harmonious bass and drums. True to it's name this twoon does have a mystical sound to it. Not quite the mystical you would associate with the National Lottery's Mystic Meg, but definitely a spiritual value or symbolic meaning can be felt submerged deep in the roots of this twoon. Inner City Life Remix - Peshay - (White Label) Being a fan of the original I was pleased to see that there had been a remix made, I was not disappointed. What seems like a whole millennium has done some good, a complete face lift has occurred. For one the intensity has been notched up a peg or two. Thumping Drum and Bass floods your mind while inner city vocals ease down the harshness of the track. One extremely danceable twoon just got better - Big Up my man Peshay. So Right - Quayside Records Pure repetitive beats are drummed on top of a rumbling B-line. One wicked drum beat on a loop. For Drum & Bass lovers out there, this one's for you! Total Control - (Origin Unknown remix) To start off basic beats lay the foundation to the twoon while the further you go into the track the more additional sounds are added. From it's humble beginnings this twoon sprouts into a beautiful tree of trumpet and piano colours and bass, beats and back-ground accompaniment fragrances. Ignorance "Ignorance" is made up of bad boy break beats and a dan man tumbling B-line rhythm combined together to produce one wicked funky head nodder. Artificial Intelligence To me this type of track is no longer classed as Jungle. It wasn't produced it was composed, as beautiful angelic music. Made purely to put ones mind at ease, this concerto brings many instruments together in complete and utter harmony, allowing the easiness of it all to take the listener on a voyage of the heavens. Strung Out "Strung Out" is one dapper of a twoon. It happens to be my personal favourite for the most obvious reason, the bass. On this track the bass comes that one step further. The bass lines taken from a bass guitar hence the name. This gives the twoon a completely new effect of rhythm. Even if all else was taken from this twoon it would still get the thumbs up, for it's original strung up bass line. Night Moves "Night Moves" also gets a 10/10 score for originality. It has no real connection with Jungle other than it's on the Foul Play album. Like "Artificial Intelligence", "Night Moves" is composed with real speed, Hip-Hop break beats and spiritual instrumental accompaniments, which make you expect a Hip-Hop artist to start bussin' his stuff over it at any time. This is one mellow head nodder for any time, any place, anywhere. Cutting Loose (Remix) A sea of sounds starts the ball rolling, before crashing ambient sounding bass and drums take over, increasing the speed. Halfway through the sea of sounds step on the breaks giving the twoon and the listener a breather. Then the gas is stamped upon by rolling tin pan beats and booming drums, sending this twoon into a wheel spin of smoking tyres and screaming engines taking the twoon roaring into the distance. The Stepper (Remix) Skipping beats make a debut before "The Stepper" and it's bass shows the beginner how things are done. By combining the two together the veteran produces a danceable hard twoon. The track then morphs into a shape shifter of grunting bass and left to right switching beats, giving the listener (if using head phones) a true sense of stereo sound. Being With You (Hopa & Bones Remix) "Being With You" is a hard booming track that starts life as a mixture of dreamy vocals and mellow 'unique original' sounds. This is not as mentally advanced as the rest, but it's most definitely more rave orientated. A promising floor smasher watch out for this one its 'Body Provoking'. Pressin' On - Hidden agenda - Metalheadz This twoon comes years ahead of it's time, it's made up of a complexed concoction of jazz-like music and heavy handed bass and drums. The enigma of this track is just too much. Even though it comes on a soft and mellow tip the need for an interpreter is definitely needed, so the true plateau of this twoon can be found and clearly understood. This is one twoon prodigy well above the I.Q of any other. Rare Tear Pt1 - (Shadow 72 - Flytronix) - Moving Shadow Promo Polluting your head with rock hard beats this sanity tearing twoon rolls on and on in your mind like one of those irritating pop twoons. On and on it plays forcing you not only to hear it, but to listen to it. By the time you've neared the end, you'll be wondering what's hidden behind the blend of hard rock beats and psychotic sounds. Who Are You - (Shadow 73 - Omni Trio) - Moving Shadow Promo Techno sounds start off what can be only described as brain progressive. Emphatic honey dipped vibes embrace the listener with calm winding thoughts. The unity between the thumping beats, wash away vocals and piano samples is just a beautiful experience that really deserves to be a Kodak moment. Its Alright - (White Label) "Its Alright" starts with a weird sounding intro, combined with sick man lyrics before an impenetrable slow down, break it down beats abruptly take over. Which interchange to boundless beats setting the pace and a dark side nauseating warping B-line. Then again the twoons morphs into a near completely different track, which keep the ragga heads among us bubbling with a thumping B-line and squeaky bass vocals. Physical Moments - Brotherhood Vol.2 - Quayside Records "Physical Moments" is an emotional twoon which controls the mood and feeling of it's listener. Whether your mellowing out relaxing at sea, or bubblin' in a motor way traffic jam this twoon lives up to it's name. I don't think this was made with intention that it will become a rave scene hit, even though it's rammed full of the usual combination of thumping beats and powerful B-lines. Jah Love - Lemon D - Conqueror "Jah Love" my personal favourite comes with a distinctive reggae flavour, even thought I'm glad to say it's not Ragga Jungle. "Jah Love" from beginning to end is just a barrage of tumbling brick beats and rolling thunderous B-lines mixed up with a rastafarian theme submerged deep into the soul of this twoon. Legalize ? - (White Label) Dis one fi all di ganja sensi smokers out dere who beg fi legialisation. Ganja lyrics mix up wid bumping beats and assorted bass lines make dis twoon one fi de dance halls. Spark up fi U sensimila and shock out! Criminal Set - Point Blank - One Touch Recordings The continuous Hardstep beats of this twoon can only be described as an avalanche of tumbling rock or the ever lasting crashing sound of rain drops in a storm. Which ever way best describes the beats, you know with the additional pounding B-line your bound to be left either severely crushed or extremely drenched by the brilliance of this twoon. Drums '95 - Doc Scott (Nasty Habits Remix) - Metalheadz After a long period of not hearing anything from Mr.Scott it was nice to hear some of his newest work on the Metalheadz label. Intelligent Hardstep is the best way to sum up what you hear when you listen to this twoon. Whether you like it or not the rolling beats and pounding bass is gonna have trace like effect on the mind. DJ PHANTASY – 'Open Our Eyes/What Is Love' (Release date early December) There's two names that are involved in this project, two names that are indelibly heat forged on the Drum & Bass Jungle musical and raving consciousness. It's yours! SWIFT & ZINC – 'Fatters'/12 O Clock Drop' (Release date early December) Anyone with even a bit of current knowledge within the Drum & bass spectrum of Jungle will have jumped up to the cartoon badness of DJ Zinc's "Super Sharp Shooter" on DJ Hype's Ganja Recordings. And with such goosebumply subliminal progression here, Swift's tearingly Amenned hot flash of flammable fluid on the flip is certainly one to take back to reality.

Starts off with a dreamy male vocal that puts you in a mellow mood and then in comes the tearing beats, unbelievable B-line and the maddest noises you've ever heard (sounds like fireworks when they shoot up into the air). Also not forgetting the catchy 'Gotta Maintain' samples. As with all DJ Krust's work this is classy stuff and is a must of all drum & Bass connoisseurs. If the a-Side isn't enough, check out da flip side entitled "Guess" - this is a wicked roller which some people prefer. FOKUS - "On-Line" - DeeJay - Release Date: 27th Nov '95 This is BEAUTIFUL!! I love this tune, you can sit at home with a fat spliff, close your eyes and relax to this or you can brock out and go mad on the dance floor. It starts with an old skool Hip-Hop sample taken from 'Sweet T' and builds and builds to the vocal 'Funkin dem up come on to the right I'm funkin dem up come on to the left', then drop in the beats, he uses a filtered B-line and the Apachi break. The result is a totally jump up tune which is already an anthem in all the clubs. This is Shy FX's first release on his new label - Ebony records. Do not miss. ★★★★★ THE X - New Dawn (Remix) - Jump Up - Release Date:15th Jan '96 The original was massive, but now we have the remix by The X himself. This is a definite must for everyone everywhere. ★★★★★ BENNY BLANCO - Remember Me? - Back 2 Basics - Release Date:8th Jan '96 This is written by Jason Ball the owner of Back 2 Basics.
