PROFILE
Magnificent in Demand - M.C ID
A few years ago I was fortunate enough to hear M.C ID at the Tasco Warehouse in Plumstead, playing a session for Life in Utopia. ID's music career had already commenced having stared from Hip Hop in the early days. The turning point on the Hardcore scene was Marshgate Lane which was showing Telepathy at the time.
Joining the Family in the late Summer of 1992 with M.C PSG, as the 2 Ruff Cru ID's popularity increased. With increased fane came more work. M.C ID apart from making his own dubplates began working with Armshouse Recording, Bizzy B and Timmi Magic.
At present M.C ID is the main Armshouse D.J and is looking to progress into all aspects of engineering and producing, whilst at the same time maintaining the deck destroying at raves. The most recent having been Sign of Our Times at Benjamin's and Jungle Fever at Stevenage Ice Rink.
JUNGLESS
WORLD DOMINATION
KING OF THE JUNGLE
By Triple D
For over a year and half the King of the Jungle label has been making a constant bombastic impact on the rave scene. Having been the first label to consistently use live lyrical vocals it is no wonder that tunes like Loveable and Salute the Kings were bigged up everywhere last year and set a new trend that was seductive in essence and flavour i.e. the summer seduction of 94'.
The label which is controlled by Rude Boy Keith and Dexterous has been an international landmark for a while having first performed life PA alongside Shut Up 'n' Dance and Ragga Twins in Austria 92'. Dexterous and Keith later returned to Austria in 93'. Amongst others the label has recently done a PA at Euphoria in Germany. This event which was held in May 94' was, I am told, an experience. Keith and Dexterous rocked the germans together with a line up that included DJs Randall, Micky Finn, Jumping Jack Frost, Brian Gee and others.
As entertainers the pair are undoubtly wicked with a distinctive wild style that is in no way mild. In Toronto, Canada on a set for an hour at Evolution (a Canadian Promotions House) was extended an extra hour and forty five minutes after shocking the canadian ravellers with latest tracks mixed by Dexterous with matching lyrical chatting from Rude Boy Keith.
Like most of the more original Jungle artists nowadays ,King of the Jungle has inherited a sound background that was Ragga and Hip Hop orientated, as evident from the labels release selection, a change with time policy is well in effect.
There is work for DJ SL in the pipeline who Rude Boy Keith has worked with before during the Rush days.

Interview
Lenny De Ice
To many people that don't know Jungless in depth, Lenny De Ice is just another fancy name. However, to those who are in "the know", Lenny De Ice is one of the core elements in the hardcore saga, that turned from hardcore jungless and has now surfaced to the world as Jungle.
De Ice now musical innovator and producer has travelled the long hard road, from DJing and Mcing in the early eighties with Demolition Squad alongside Mantronix, to performing in the acid house days of Ill Tempo Empathy, Kryptonite (Cambridge), Fantasy (Sutton), Energy (Canterbury) etc, to releasing We R E in 1990.
1990 was the major stepping stone not only for Lenny De Ice, but for todays Jungle. We R E (which incidently is We Are Easy) was first played by DJ Randall at the Living Dream in East London to a crowd of 16,000, "who took to the hardcore jungless toon like fish to watah".
This was followed by myriads of dubplates and hardcore jungle hits, including the original 'Six Million Ways To Die' on an e.p. released in 1992 with a remix to 'We R E'.
In 1993 Switch fortified Lenny De Ice's Armshouse Selection as a must for major DJ's like Ron, MC ID, Randall etc.
Armshouse which is the brain child of Lenny De Ice consists of three combined major forces, Lenny himself as producer with James and Stewart covering distribution, which has a nationwide network.
What's most ingenious is the way Lenny De Ice has linked Armshouse with Dub Hustlers, E.T Baby Mo, Jungle Wise, M.C ID, Red Ant D.J Rap, Kenny Ken, Randall, Junglistic Carl, Fly Girls and Jimmy Gray's Sujiro Productions as Square Biz Records. With work in progress including remixes for Don Campbell, Kenny Knots, Sanchez and the pioneers for Pioneer International labels and Smiley Culture. Working with other music makers is not something which is new to Lenny.
Since the early days he worked with other artist in different capacities including MC'ing for Randall and DJ Rap. This just goes to show the diversity of the musical experience of this innovative producer who has made Armshouse not just a recording and distribution house but a specialist in engineering and programming, which is an essential requirement in the fast growing underground music market.
Lenny De Ice's philosophy is one that is crystal and clear. In his studio I listened to him intently as he said whole heartedly,"the main lick is for all underground labels i.e. 'the unknown circuit' to promote up and coming music makers, because they are the future".
Having said that modestly it becomes more obvious why. Armshouse itself has worked with many people that were previously unknown and have helped in the shaping of the whole rave scene as a whole. Thus Lenny has found himself in realising the fact that the power of the innovative producer/manager is not just in music making but is in making the whole rave scene.
Basically if the 'unknown circuit' labels allow young but enthusiastic music makers to work with them then the experience of the teachers is passed to the students. In that happening we may perhaps keep the flavour of Jungle without worrying about the dangers of having people who do not know the in's and out's of the music trying a 'ting'. This is of course a problem which is now being felt together with that of attitude in the raves and clubs.

Knights of the Underground
Knights of the Underground the rave by Virtual Reality evolved on the 31st September at Bagleys Film Studio in Kings Cross, proving that there can be more raves for you to go. Relax, feel good and dance to the moving sounds of DJs like Randall, Hype, Bukem, Swift & Zinc and the 3 Bass Cru without any attitude.
It was a happy exciting event as you can see from the photos, and will carry many happy memories for the Happy Raver.
Other performers that rocked the night in the House and Garage Room were the 'Bang on it Cru' on a mellow tip.

DESIRE
2000AD Musical Production
2000AD, reputed nationally for their massive happy dance parties put up another successful musical production which left ravellers begging for more. Having witnessed the fourth in a series of one off immense parties at the Roller Express we acknowledge the claims that the 2000AD Cru are known for.
On the night in question our hearts desire was in the place to be mingling with the crowds of joyous people that danced the night away to the likes of DJs Fabio, Mickey Finn, hype, Swan E, and Slipmatt amongst others in the main arena. Whilst mellow S, Stevie B, Matt Maurice and other uplifted the Garage.
As always every single avenue of dance music was explored through state of the are sound systems with visual effects to match, in all three rooms available for serious happy ravers, covering Happy Hardcore, Drum and Bass, Jungle, House, Uplifting Garage and Dance music.
As if that was not good enough Desire had a stage show consisting of some of the best dancers in the country. Among the best of the best were the successful , sensual and sensational Sexcess on Legs, the amazing Geeza's 'n' Babes and Partners in Crime.
Security was tight like Fort Knox with thorough searches at the door. Unlike most security they were polite but firm.
To bring together a musical production as large and successful as Desire is a remarkable feat which apart from hard work is a result of several years of expertise in Rave Management.

Health and Raving
It is always essential to eat properly before going out to any raves. Considering the fact that you dance all night and sweat a lot thus losing a large amount of body weight, which is mostly attributed to body fluid. Even though you might drink water in a rave or club it is still good practice to eat well before you embark. Most people do not feel like eating before a Rave because the excitement makes them feel their not hungry. So the best time to eat would seem around 6 O'clock in the evening thus giving time for the food to digest. Ensure that you drink plenty of vitamin C and other minerals such as Ribena, Lucozade, peanut punch etc.
Each month we will be looking at different health tips for the raver. Happy Raving !

The Rave Industry by Carla Harp
To try to categorise the rave industry in terms of music is quite hard since the music is formed from other types of music.
Sure enough it is easy to say rave music consists of House, Garage, Techno, Euro and Acid, Jungle, Hardcore, Drum & Bass, Break Beat, Ragga Jungle, Seduction Jungle, Dark Jungle, Trance and even Progression.
However in a research carried out by yours truly on behalf of Prestige Magazine 6 out of 10 could only group House, Garage, Hardcore and Jungle.
Not surprising either there is a small percentage of ravers who consider the rave scene to consist only of Acid and Jungle. Fortunately this is not so..
The music categories which are most accepted by the majority of artists and record producers are Garage, House, Jungle and Rum & Bass (the original Hardcore Jungless).
Although Hardcore is music in it's own right, a minute percentage is currently being made today, compared with the others.
The most complex of the four Jungle evoked from Hardcore in it's Hardcore Jungless state which became very popular in 1991.
Today's Jungle is surrounded by many flavours Ragga Jungle, Seduction Jungle, Dark Jungle and Pure Jungle Drum & Bass. Some tracks of Jungle even consist of all flavours. However, there is a watered down version of Jungle which is commercial i.e. without the underground flavour which is essential for rave music may it be Garage, House, Hardcore or Jungle Thus we can conclude the rave market to consist of four music categories of House, Garage, Hardcore and Jungle and several business sectors including security, promotions, performers and technical i.e lighting companies, backdrops, distribution Recording Companies, labels and video and film production.
In the months to come I will be analysing the different rave market sectors in detail and addressing issues of concern to the rave.
Until then.........
Peace, Love, Unity and Having Fun

DJ VIBES
DJ Vibes who a few years ago 'let off' with his first track "Nice up the Area" on parallel Label is one of the unique set of artists that make House, Garage and Jungle. lately Vibes has been working with Hellraiser and Breakthrough Records on a deadly rough original tune. (Look out for it Ed.)
In the time since "Nice up the Area" DJ Vibes has made countless dubplates and tunes which have been on Spinning Vinyl, Active Records and Sensei labels. In between which he has spent time playing out at various venues including Sterns.
Speaking about music I asked him about the mass media attention currently on Jungle. In particular the definition of Jungle was the most sort. Vibes agrees that Jungle can only be best and concisely defined on vinyl (so listen up to Vibes' Jungle tunes Ed.) But endeavouring to put it into words, "to try to define Jungle, Jungle is not the ragga sample in a tune as a few people seem to think, but the pattern of the drum and bass which is the essence of the 'feeling'. Without that you have no Jungle". Thus Jungle can be flavoured with any style of music i.e. if you listen to DJ Vibes tracks you will note original Drum & Bass with original and sampled vocals set in moderation. A trademark for those with high marks in the vinyl making.
IN THE BEGINNING
Many are of the thought that Jungle is a musical product derived from Techno after the article on Jungle in Pride Magazine by DJ Elayne.
However this is far from the truth since Jungle has existed longer that Techno. Forms of Jungle were around in 91' and Prestige Magazine has it on good authority that experimental tapes which are still available were being made as early as 90' by some certain artists.
In relation to this subject Prestige Magazine is currently carrying out indepth research with DJ's, promoters, MC's and labels that were active around 1988-91, into the origins of rave music and the metamorphoses of it through time (that is from probably 88' to the present day and a projection into the future). The results of which will be published in Issue due out the first week of December.
The Bristol Scene
Jungle and Drum & Bass have been around in Bristol for over two years. From the days of Easy Groove running up and down the country putting Bristol on the map.
Now Bristol has put Bristol on the map by using it's home town DJs and MCs to create the Bristol Vibe.
This has managed to bring party goers from all over the West Country and even as far as London.
Bristol also have a band of up and coming producer DJs to look forward to, such as More Rockers and Cru, Roni Size, Die, Krust and Flyn & Flora.
They also have 3 main stations which play Jungle. These are Ragga 104FM which is a Pirate Station with DJ Specialists, Daisy and MC Jakes. Then you've got the "Full Cycle Show" with Romni Size and Krust on Galaxy 101 and Power FM with Die & Sur.
The "Full Cycle" is responsible for the Project Firefox and Guilty for Love which have both been booming on Londons Radio Stations including ROOD FM and KOOL FM.

SO NATURAL
Kemistry & Storm
Sometime in 1991 two girls walked into a shop in London and bought a pair of 12-10 decks. Little did they know that they were about to become one of the best duo DJs in the rave scene.
Kemistry & Storm who originally come from Wolverhampton, now just about play out every week with a fixed rota at the Laserdrome in South London. The current status of the duo has far exceeded just being one of the best two among specialist DJs in Drum & Bass with selections coming from labels like Moving Shadow, V Label, Deadly Vinyl, Reinforced and Metalhead. The duo tend to favour most times by Peshay, LTJ Bukem, Dillinja, Wax Doctor, Mack, Full Cycle, Top Buzz-P99, Vancleef and stuff from LDD, Doc. Scott and Goldie.
For both Kemistry & Storm the current time is exciting because Drum & Bass is flaming in earnest, deep in the Underground and it seems only natural that music making work must intensify. Having already released signatures on Reinforced the pair of star DJ's are not new to music making. Currently they are looking to build a wide portfolio of tunes, of which we can only look forward to.
Like most star DJ's there are no boundaries as to where one can play. So too Kemistry & Storm have played up and down the country from Wolverhampton (with the home crowd) Mind Blown, to Southern Exposure in Wales reaching as far as Club XS in Frankfurt.
Having met the two DJ's their general feeling was akin to that of many other star DJ's who feel that the music is exciting but is being killed by the bad attitude of a minority of rotten minded people that are the core of the rave concept (i.e. bad attitude).

ROOD BOYS
by D.Bennett
DJ AKY and MC Ranking are part of the Rood Cru's frontline of DJs. Both DJ AKY and MC Ranking play out on a regular in Clacton.
AKY started playing on Moonlight 101 many years ago during the days of Beric Manor where he also played out.
Interviewing him a few weeks ago, I asked him his favourite club in London ?
Paradise Club was the reply.
I then asked why he was in this game ?
Certainly not for the money because there ain't none. I love the music and one day I hope the station will become legal. We don't do it to make life hard for the DTI we just want to broadcast music.
Dillinja
Everytime I speak to someone about the new flavour of Drum & Bass that's currently moving the scene, it seems the name of Dillinja creeps into the conversation.
Dillinja who has released a number of records this year and last which are all in great demand in the U.K for DJ collections. In the U.S.A I am told that Deadly Ceremony and Sovereign Melody are some of the most sought out intelligent Drum & Bass tunes. Sovereign Melody for its faster b-line and the semi-dark r&b overtones which blend wickedly with the style of the sub bass.
Unfortunately it was not available in Chicago and stateside DJs were left to phone U.K record shops at the expense of a fat phonebill. Dilllinja who started in early 1993 has been producing Drum & Bass since then, told me, when I linked up with him in late August, that for the rest of 94' he would be looking towards intelligent pure Jungle B-lines and live vocals which he is currently experimenting with, so watch out for the next release.

UNITY IN THE DANCE
Unity Dance featured here are the first of many dancers who will pass through this feature each month. This feature is meant to give all the dance groups within the rave scene an exposure amongst the other subjects that form Rave.
The group currently dance with Elevation, World Dance, Desire and Pure X at the Cue Club in Birmingham, With more than three years rave performance experience behind most of the members the group feels that too little attention is given to dancer for the act they perform.
Danny Bennett interview Lisa from Unity, so check this out........
What DJ did you dance to most at Desire on Saturday 27th August 94'?
Food Junkie and Hype
What did you think of the crowd and how does this affect your performance?
It was great because it was how the crowds used to be in the old days.
How old are Unity Dancers?
About 2 years old.
How many members does the group have? and what are their names?
There are five of us. Fathom, Fido, Kerry, Julie and me Lisa.
Why do you Dance? is it for the money?
The atmosphere is just great, and that's what makes the difference.
How did you start dancing for Desire?
I was at the Astoria on my 18th Birthday just dancing in the crowd. I ended up backstage when they asked me to join the group.

MC RAGE
MC Rage - Desires first MC and still going strong three years later...
First things first, DJs always come before MCs. To me the purpose of an MC is to keep the crowd hyper without chatting all over the mixing. The MC should have a good knowledge of the music that's out now. You should be versatile and be able to MC over all types of music, and always be original.
At the end of the day raving is all about having fun, if your gonna MC at least try to look like you having fun. When I MC I'm always raving in the crowd or freaking out on the stage.
We asked MC Rage a few questions:-
What Record labels do you like ?
Good Looking, Moving Shadow, Metal heads (Goldie), Brain Progression, Nookie and Droppin Science.
Who are your favourite DJs ?
At the moment I work with Swift and Zinc, I hope to take off with the three of us. Others are Randall, LTJ Bukem, Kemistry & Storm, Swift & Zinc and Hype.
What style of music do you like ?
I like Drum & Bass (rolling drum's, tearin bass) I rate all the producers who sit down and really make music i.e. LTJ Bukem, Goldie, Swift & Zinc and Danny Breaks. I also still like a lot of Hip Hop.
What do you think of the Rave Scene at present ?
At the moment there a lot of good music being played in London. The Rave scene is only getting better with raves like Desire, Inspiration, Knights of the Underground, Elevation, World Dance all giving value for money.
Working for 2000AD I've seen what it's like for promoters and its a lot of hard work, that's why I take my hat off to people like Phil, Mick and Denise from Desire who really put on 'the best raves' in my opinion.
Shouts:- All 200AD Massive (Desire) Underground FM Massive, Louise (girlfriend), Fathom, Portia Kidraver, Jai, Jaya, my Mum (for putting up with the phonebills), all Forest Gate Massive, my brother Jason and Grant and Richard, Swift & Zinc, Bang on it Cru, TNT, too many names to mentions, all the massive ringing me up wanting to know where there shout was (Big up)
See ya
