Welcome to this the first issue of Mission Magazine.
We shall attempt to bring you the truth concerning our music to you the paying public. The scene we all know has now divided into numerous groups, yet at the end of the day it is still all music, be it house, garage, techno, happy hardcore, jungle or drum and bass. The one thing these trends have in common is that they make you dance.
For years the Americans have dominated music yet now we have something which bore fruit in Britain, our musical power has opened up peoples minds and made them take notice. All we can do now is keep going and pass on this our dance to the youth of tomorrow.
Every Mission is for you and the dance is not over.

WELCOME to a potted round up of some of the good things that are happening in and around the scene. Contrary to popular media attention 1) The scene is far from dead/dying and 2) There is still a diverse range of music being played out under the generally accepted banner of 'jungle'.
Personally I hate musical categories and do not like to pigeonhole tracks. Any product that I mention in this round up will be tracks that are being dropped by the 'big boys' or are about to be in the near future.
Although future release information may already be being played on dubplate, I will not review a track unless it is at the testpress/white label/promo phase. This is because the time taken between 'plate' and release can sometimes be very long, so reviews of plates tend to confuse the market place. You don't want to be asking at the shop for six months do you? I will leave the hype to the hype charts! So, you should know where I'm coming from now - on with the information...
There are a lot of remixes about now or imminent. Shy FX's Gangsta II and Nuttah are doing damage on the Sound of the Underground; DJ SS has given Slipmatts 'Breaking Free' a seeing to in his inimitable way; Foul Play Vol 4 remixes are due on two 10"s - the first has a E.P. remix of 'Being with you' and an Omni Trio remix of 'Music is the key', the second has an EZ Rollers remix of 'Being with you' and a bonus track 'Beats to the present' which is wicked; Fallen Angel's 'Hello Luvva' remixes are due; Ant Miles has done blinding job on Red One's latest, with 'The Futurist' and 'Alive and kickin'' both getting an upgrade; Ant has also been busy on Flatliner and Shimon, due soon on Ram; 'Retreat' by the Dubster, after many big names have been clamouring to remix it, will be due shortly on Flex, as will Da Intelex remixes; Omni Trio's recent 12" has been remixed and released to coincide with the re-release of the LP at end of October; the dreaded 'Dred Bass' remix is nothing short of breathtaking (as you might expect with Origin Unknown on the case); 'Cold fresh air' by Higher Sense, whose remix is massive on plate currently, will be out on Movin' Shadow and not Liftin' Spirits as the original was; finally two remixes that will not be out except on LP's are the Foul Play remixes of Nookie's 'Sound of music' and yet another remix of 'Renegade snares' by Omni Trio. Enough remixes - what about some original material then?
Bukem's Good Looking Records will get round to releasing some good stuff in the fullness of time - namely Peshay, Aquarius and Bukem himself, (Peshay's 'Singing to you' has been around for time, though not quite as long as 19.5yet?) D.O.P.E.'s 'Travelling part 2' is, as usual with DOPE, superb, and it too will see a release on GLR and not Rugged Vinyl. Q Project's enormous 'Champion sound' has been re-mastered and will be out with the bubbling atmospheric Doc Scott remix (Ok, so I said enough about remixes!) on Legend, with the Legendary Volume 4 next up. Andy C's 'Cool on the dancefloor' is another dubplate sleeper, but I'm reassured that it will be due before christmas. 'War in '94' will strike a chord of familiarity with many, coming from The Badman. L Double, after ever strengthening production credits on many of Flex's tunes (the label not the artist), comes on his own with 'Gawaan', so watch for that. The Kemet story continues with 'Lovin'', another floor filling anthem from one of the undergrounds finest stables - also due is a Dj friendly triple pack 3rd party/Kemet LP.

Reviews
New signing to Liftin' Spirit The Interrogator debuts with 'Awareness', causing a bit of a stir. The Bristol massive are truly kicking it at the moment, with Firefox's excellent 'Warning', Jazz Note by DJ Krust and the brilliantly simple 'Timestretch'/'Physical' by man of the moment (for me anyway) Roni Size. Watch for the Bristol crew in the future. New signing to Suburban Base, The Sophisticated Bad Boyz have 'Feel the magic' on promo at the moment. DJ Mayhem's 'Do you want it' on new label Precious Material is as atmospheric as you like it and a good follow up to Inesse (albeit on a different label). Ganja 4 is causing all sorts of reaction and due - otherwise known as 'Mash up'. Sound of the Underground, on top of the Shy FX offerings, have the excellent T Power with 'Elemental', G Flex and the Bandit (which is an interesting mash up of styles) and the wonderful full vocal track by Soundman and Don Lloydie featuring Elizabeth Troy - boy can she sing! Undoubtably a label heading in the right direction. Expect a new look Creative Wax in the new year - new label designs and a heap of new material from Pulse/Waxdoctor and Alex Reece.
Well, that's enough for this month on the round up front - if you want to get in touch for me to pass any info on please feel free - contact me through the magazine address, and that goes for gossip and scandal too, if there's any about! I will leave you with a selection of tunes that are doing it for me at the moment (all of which are on vinyl, not just plate). I don't like scores with reviews really, since after all, it's only my opinion and you may feel differently, so needless to say that to be featured on this page they have to be pretty damn good: And that isn't just my opinion - it's dancefloor reaction too.OK?
See you next month. DJ Woodmix.
FIREFOX AND 4 TREE - WARNING (PHILLY BLUNT) - Excellent, innovative drum and bass from the mind of Roni Size - crisp beats, lovely bassline and a cracking vocal hook.
KEMET 12 - LOVIN' (KEMET) - Wicked ragga vocals, great En Vogue sample and the usual exceptionally high standard Kemet production.
SOUNDMAN And DON LLOYDIE Featuring ELIZABETH TROY - GREATER LOVE (SOUND Of The UNDERGROUND) - Full vocals, beautifully sung by Elizabeth over rough beats and the ever insistent bass. Ground breaking and delightful.
RONI SIZE - TIMESTRETCH (V) - On a roll at the moment, this is the bassline track that you've been hearing for a while. Clattering breaks and oh, that bassline!
BROWN And DANGER MAN - DREAMS OF ANOTHER WORLD (STRONGHOLD) - Mixed race in another guise, with a bass heavy, amen driven, swirling atmospheric monster that will tear the house down.
FORMULA 7 And EASY BASS - RUN FROM DE SOUNDCLASH (QUAYSIDE) - Spot on drum and bass with a ragga sampled intro, neatly chopped breaks and a foot moving melodic bassline.
DEAD DRED - DRED BASS (REMIX) (MOVIN SHADOW) - Origin Unknown keep the same dreamy/mental/break/mental format as the original but incredibly improve it even more - if you're standing close to a speaker when the bassline kicks in, be careful not to fall over - unreal.
FOUL PLAY - VOLUME 4 (REMIXES) (MOVIN SHADOW) - Two 10" format upgrading the original in a subtle style - the extra new track 'Beats to the present' is a winner too.
SHADES OF RHYTHM - PEACE SIGN (REMIXES) (LABELLO BLANCO) - A cheeky, funky remix by Ray Keith and a smooth dreamy Rogue Unit interpretation, both of which could be played independently.
DIY CREW - RETURN OF The DIY CREW (BOOM TUNES) - Two extremely different mixes of the same track providing eastern sounding wails, tuff ragga vocals and a booming, almost distorted bassline. Ruff.

Interview
SUMMER: Firstly when did the idea of Formula 7 come to you and how long was it before you made it happen?
Formula 7: The idea first hit me when I was in the bath after finishing a gig! I knew it was time for me to move away from DJ'ing because of a certain agency ripping me off. It was in 1991 and I felt that there was too much back stabbing going on so I decided it was time for a change of direction.
SP: So how long after the bath water had gone cold did you finally get your first track together?
F7: Well, it took me about four months to find the money and then everything went from there, until we ended up with the end product "It's just not ragga" and the rest speaks for itself.
SP: How many tracks have you released to date?
F7: About fifteen in all, but only six are by Formula 7 alone, I have produced another nine tracks and have credits on numerous other records.
SP: I've noticed your style of music has changed since the first track, is this due to the changing trends or is this the development of Formula 7?
F7: I'd say nothing can stay the same, and yes it's definitely a development of our sound.
SP: Who else is involved in the Formula 7 crew?
F7: Formula 7 is basically me but there are other elements, DJ Bones and Opium (our vocalist) and we've also got two Djs The O.S.L. and Steve B.
SP: Why do you say Formula 7 is you alone when you have these others alongside you?
F7: Firstly I created Formula 7, Opium and Bones are now part of the outfit because of the various work they've done with me, O.S.L. and Steve B have always been with me since the various pirate radio stations I've run. Formula 7 is basically a producer which is what I feel I am. People have noticed us a lot more this year, so we became a collective but I still stress that Formula 7 is me as I have the influence and last word on what happens musically
SP: Where did you meet Bones and Opium?
F7: I met them after they sent me a demo tape, I was impressed and so I brought it to the attention of the Quayside management and subsequently we've gone on to record the Mad Bones series, volume four has just been released.
Page 7
Interview
SP: Are you known as anything else?
F7: On the Dj circuit I'm known as Mad B but I wanted to be recognised for my musical potential, not for my Dj'ing ablity or the stigma or dare I say ego of being a DJ.
SP: Where have you played as a Dj?
F7: House of clubs (garage)-Astoria '89, Telepathy-Marshgate lane '90-'91, Rapido-various venues '90-'92, Pleasure Zone-Cambridge '90-'92, Intense-Kings Lynn '90-91, World Party-various venues '91-'92.
SP: Have you played anywhere other than England?
F7: Yes, in Puerto del Carmen at a club called the garage and a place called the Hippodrome and I played house believe it or not.
SP: That's not usual for someone who makes drum and bass tunes or should we say intelligent jungle.
F7: As far as I'm concerned music is music no matter what tag you put on it.
SP: What groups or people have influenced your music?
F7: George Benson, Anita Baker, Teddy Pendegrass, Bob Marley, UB40 and all the drum and bass and jungle around at the moment.
SP: What producers do you rate and why?
F7: Bizzy B because he taught me how to make music and he has inspired me in a big way. Dillinja definitely, Swift and Zinc, Ray Keith plus loads of others, I just feel that anyone who is seriously into music deserves the utmost respect, TDK is also one of the baddest new kids on the block!!
SP: How do you see this music going now?
F7: I think it will become alot more intelligent and musically everyone has to move forward.
SP: What other projects have you got lined up?
F7: I hope to be working with Kenny Ken in the new year, I've just finished a track with Ellis Dee and there's a few mixes in the pipeline
SP: Just one last question, What are your views on the General Levy boycott?
F7: No comment!! Thanks to all the record shops, Nicky and Ray at Blackmarket, thanks to all the DJ's for supporting us they know who they are! the pirate stations and everyone else who has been there with us through it all. Respect!!

DESIRE '94
SATURDAY FIRST OF OCTOBER NINETEEN NINETY FOUR
MC Rage.
Getting totally mash up in da place.
Well having been to the last few Desires I was wondering what this, the last at the Roller Express, would hold. When we arrived the feeling we got whilst walking through the reception area was unreal, I had never seen so many happy faces, no attitudes or bad vibes it was 'T' for bloody tremendous. Kenny Ken was on and boy was he mashing up the place, he was pulling tunes like he had pressed them especially for Desire. The set he played set the house on fire and eveyone couldn't stop jumping. DJ Hype was up next and he took things easy and warmed up the crowd because he knew the next DJ wouldn't show then from five O'clock Hype came to life. The last hour was blinding and the place was rocking like a proper old skool rave. Those of you who thought drum 'n' bass was dead think again for this was the re-birth of the rave scene. Every single boy, girl, DJ, dancer and MC left there knowing they had witnessed something special, the first of October saw the re-birth of a new Desire. Long live the old skool.

Welcome to the first of Missions Hip Hop pages. Each month we'll be bringing you news and views from the world of Hip Hop and its surrounding culture.
RENAISSANCE UK
We may finally be seeing the beginning of a UK hip hop revolution. All hip hoppers on this island know it has been the longest time coming. Major record labels have finally pulled their collective finger out and signed some UK talent (MCD, The Brotherhood and the Kaliphz) and we are hearing a marked improvment in UK rapping and production (check the latest Katch 22 and MCM tunes).
As a musical community we need to maintain the momentum the hip hop scene is gathering by preserving the peace at jams and gigs - we can now go out, check the tunes and have a good time with minimum aggro. we need to appreciate that which is phat and dis which is wacked - if a UK artist is slamming make sure you let everybody know and by the same token if they are weak let that be known too, but don't just dis for the sake of it. We need to put pressure on the Djs and record shop owners to play or stock that phat UK tune and make sure that credit goes where it is due. Finally we need to protect real UK hip hop - in the late eighties we saw a slew of hip house records, in the early nineties we suffered techno rap and why? because UK hip hop is difficult to sell so it has often been linked to the latest trends to boost sales. If we allow jungle hip hop (should that be hungalist?!) to happen we may cut the legs out from under UK hip hop before it has a chance to find its feet. Don't get me wrong jungle is something i can get into but it looks set to be ravaged by suited business men and packaged for mainstream consumption if the moguls of commercialism are going to kill jungle don't let them take hip hop with it.
NEWS
Michael Frantis new group Spearhead have a single out in November and look set to tour the UK in December with their full band.
Da Youngstas new album is so far only coming out on CD which is bad news, but there are a few bootleg copies on vinyl floating around, a fact that Dj's will appreciate, I however don't appove of bootlegging of course.
New UK group Mo Bounce release "Left and Right" their debut single on Latitude Records a phat R n B style rap track to keep an ear out for.
Brand Nubian have a new album released on the 31st of October titled "Everything is Everything" it will be released simultaneously here and in the states though despite all the rumours this set doesn't feature former Brand Nubian member Grand Puba.
It is rumoured that Craig Mack may be coming to London, though nothing is confirmed yet it looks likely he'll be in town at the beginning of November, watch this space! His album however will get a UK release and is expected to have more tracks on the UK vinyl than the US import.
Until next time keep it real and let us know what is happening hip hop wise around the country. LATERS! Thanks to Nelson, IYARE.

Interview
SWIFT 'N' ZINC
DJ Profile
How did you get your DJ names?
Well, When Swift was young he used to be fast!, someone else named me Zinc.
What are your real names?
Swifts' name is Trevor and mine's Ben.
How long have you known each other?
Boy, Since we were about knee height, yeah about 14 years.
What has been your biggest musical influence?
Well I've always been into Hip Hop and Jazz and Swift listens to a lot of Soul.
What radio stations have you worked on?
Impact, Format, Eruption and Underground.
What's the best rave you've played at?
Desire.
Any particular one?
All of them, new years eve was bad, it was fuckin' rammed.
What producers have you worked with?
Mad B, Bizzy B, and Steve B everyone with the surname B!!
I've done a bit of work with Danny Breaks but I've not actually had any tracks out with him.
Are there advantages or disadvantages to being two of you?
On the bad side you have to split the money and the set but the advantages are that if one of you can't play then the other one can. I lost my tunes once (Zinc) but I could still use Trevors' which was lucky.
Any bad experiences playing out?
I played a tune at the wrong speed but I think everyone's done that at some point.
How do you feel about the jungle scene?
I think it's good that it's split up 'cos you get the jungle crowd at jungle nights and raving crowds at rave nights.
What do you see in the future for yourselves?
Just doing more of the same, producing more and bringing out tracks.
How do you think the scene will change over the next year?
Well, you can't really say, it'll just carry on the way it's going and the jungle split will become clearer.
Do you have the same tastes within jungle?
Yeah we both like strings and amen drum n bass.
Who are your top DJ's?
Randall, Peshay, LTJ Bukem, Hype and Magic. He's rolling!
Who do you rate as producers?
Peshay, LTJ Bukem, Roni Size, Danny Breaks, Andy C, Back to Basics and Movin' Shadow.
Any top promoters?
Phil and Mick at Desire (2000ad), Sonya's safe at Laserdrome.
Where are you playing now?
We're residents at Desire, Phase 3, Arcadia, Inspirations and Sign of the Times.
What do you do during the week?
Run around seeing this person and that and making tunes.
Any advice for young DJ's?
Go and cut the plates!, save up for the plates!, well just what everyone says, stick at it. Also just go to raves and try to meet the promoters.
Have you got any shouts?
Forest Gate massive, Eruption crew, Underground crew, Danny Breaks (Droppin' Science), Winston (Boogie Times), Mad B, fuckin' everybody!!
Interview by Morgan.
