Interview
First off, let's let's hear about Mike Dearborn the person.
I'm very to myself. I literally have only a couple of friends, a girlfriend, others are more or less associates. I'm a pretty normal, basic guy... it doesn't take a lot to make me happy. In other ways, like in the way I think, I don't think I'm normal though- I don't follow trends. But I'm also not a leader- I view all my options and then just take the best route.
What do you do besides creating and making music?
I'm a student at Northern Illinois University. I'm currently a junior and a communications major with an emphasis on Media and communications.
When did you begin writing music and what influenced you to create the style of the tracks you do?
I first started dabbling during my freshman year of high school- messing around with a 505 and brother eventually went and bought one. It started from curiousity- listening to BMX- when there was a BMX. BMX was a station in Chicago that had Farley, Steve Hurley, frankie knuckles- that was a LONG time ago. So that got me interested in DJing- around about '85, and then I started tinkering with drum machines around '86 or '87. I'd have to say that in the beginning, the person that influenced me the most was Farley- just because he released a lot of underground stuff - just tracks like acid- real minimal stuff- and I thought that was real cool. I like the other house too, like Marshall Jefferson, but still- If I had to pick somebody from the early days who influenced me, it was him and then later on when Phuture started releasing stuff, and Adonis and other early house people. They all gave me the mental spark to try to make the stuff myself.
What do think about the way underground dance music has progressed over the years- starting with House and moving on to Acid to the Techno Revolution to Hardcore, Gabber, Breakbeat, and the many different styles- how it has changed etc.
It's all been a change for the better because I like to see the music grow - like a tree, it starts with a seed that grows and you get all the branches- I'd have to say I like what's happened. What I don't want is for it to get commercial, as it has with groups like 2 Unlimited and Technotronic, who, incdentally, when they were interviewed in the Sun-Times, didn't even mention Chicago- it was New York this and New York that. I don't dig commercial shit, what I can deal with is a big big underground scene.
What are your thoughts about underground scenes here in the Midwest, as well as in Europe and other places you've been.
Concerning the midwest- what I thought and what I know now are like night and day. I pictured a bunch of people listening to L.A. Style. I was clueless and didn't give the Midwest any credit. But now that I've been

to parties, what I see from the people and the music is very comparable to what I see in Europe. The only difference is the size of the scene- with numbers at events. It was very suprising and I'm very impressed- I still haven't heard 'James Brown is Dead' at any parties.
What is your opinion on the European scene and how is it going over there?
For the most part, I'd have to say it's all good. What I don't like about parties there is that they have so many DJ's booked per party. The first time I played in Europe, in Paris, I think I played maybe 45 minutes. I'm playing Mayday in November and there, dj sets are maybe 40 minutes- because they have a gazillion djs and a million live acts. Sometimes you don't get to spin a set as long as you like, but I understand they are trying to please an array of musical tastes.
What plans or new releases do you have coming up?
I've got an EP coming out on DJAX this month called 'Unpredictable' on green vinyl, and in the winter I have an LP slash CD to be released entitled 'Muzikal Journey' which I finished this last August. There were so many tracks I made that we just have to decide what tracks to include, so it will be out probly in December. I should have another EP out in early '95.
Do release exclusively for DJAX nowadays?
I'll always be exclusive as Mile Dearborn in that the sound that you hear on records by me on DJAX, but if and when I do things differently- let's say I wanted to make some real hard acid, I may release that under an alias on a different label. I haven't done that yet, but I think I would as long as I felt comfortable with the people I was doing it with.
Tell us a little bit about how you got hooked up with Saskia Sledgers and the DJAX Upbeats label.
I was at a friends house listening to records and he directed me to this release he had from DJAX- it was one of the first that she did, I believe. It was along the lines of the stuff I do- real minimal acid, real underground. I was like, "Well, gee" because I was thinking about checking out some different labels because I had some bad experiences with labels in Chicago. So I wrote down the address and fax number off the record and had my mom send them a tape, because she had a FedEx number. I called her (Sascha) and left a message like... to whom it may concern, I'm Mike Dearborn, I'm from Chicago, I'm sending a tape, listen to it and we'll talk. She called me back later that day and she said she had known who I was from my two previous releases. She was real happy that I had chose to send her label some stuff, and as I later found out, people in Europe, especially Holland, are really into Chicago and Detroit style. So I signed, but because I was really cautious about her label, it was like a one record deal, but the more we spoke about business and just personal stuff, a mutual trust grew and that brings us to where we are now. It's funny that it was all almost an accident, because if I hadn't run across that one recored, who knows? I'm glad I did.
What Dj's do you repect the most?
Dj's from back in the day I'd have to say Ron Hardy and Farley. Nowadays, definatly Sascha- to me, she's just the shit. I heard Ritchie Hawtin play once, which was quite exceptional. This chick from France named Marilyn, she spins trance- she's real good. As far as people around here, I like ESP Woody a lot, I like Joe (Hyperactive), many times though, I hear a DJ spin, but don't actually pay attention to who it is. Sorry.
How long have you been DJ'ing, and what is your most memorable experience from parties?
It's going on 10 years now, as for memorable moments, I would have to say the first time I played in Europe- there were like, 5000 people and though it went quite well, I was kind of worried about how the crowd would respond, but in the end, I felt like I could stick my chest out and say, 'Hey, I did a good job.' After that, I wasn't ever really nervous, I just thought, hey, I've got to go out and do what I've got to do and do what I love. I sit and think about how I would chew my fingernails, I was so nervous.
What do you think of the people's response to your spinning has been at the last couple parties you've been spinning around here?
I'd have to say that everythings been good, but when I spin, I try to block the crowd out in a sense because if I pay too much attention to the crowd I might get the jitters or lose my concentration.

What do you think of the people's response to your spinning has been at the last couple parties you've been spinning around here?
I'd have to say that everythings been good, but when I spin, I try to block the crowd out in a sense because if I pay too much attention to the crowd I might get the jitters or lose my concentration.
Who have been your major musical influences?
I don't think there were any major influences, I just listen to a lot of music and I don't rip anybody off, but you hear how they're doing it and you may learn from their technique. Right now, I'd have to say Luke Slater and also Hardfloor in a sense, even though I don't do much acid, but you just listen and say, damn, that's good- it inspires you to go and work on some music. Influence comes from the records I play, because those are the records I like. It could be anybody from Robert Armani to Luke Slater to a producer who does trance.
Do you listen to anything other than 'dance' music?
Lately I've been just listening to the records I have, but I also like disco, because I used to spin disco back in the day- so I still have my disco collection. Music I'll generally listen to, but not necessarily go out and buy, like Metallica- they're cool, but I don't have any of their records- If they were on MTV, I might not change the channel. In general, I listen to dance music, but it will vary- some days I'll listen to some ambient stuff, some days trance, some days I'll put the Mokum compilation hardcore CD in. It depends on what kind of mood I'm in.
If you were stuck in an elevator and had to listen to one song for several weeks straight, what would it be?
Hmmm, that one's a stumper...For that long, I'd want to chose something not so rough, maybe that Underground Resistance 003- by Mad Mike. Maybe one of their songs, because I just recently began buying their records, but they're excellant. Every time I hear one of their records, I definately know it's them.
What equipment do you use on your tracks?
In the past, as far as drums, basic 909, 505, 626, 727, and I've got an R70, which is a newer model. As far as keyboard sounds, I've used something of everything from a Roland D20 to a keyboard you could buy at Silo. It varies, sometimes I try to create some of my own sounds within my unit.
How would you describe the music you make?
People always ask that and I really don't know because when I sit down and do tracks, I just do 'em. If I had to describe them, I'd say I just do them without thinking about it and they just happen or they won't. I try to make each one different- I think people could tell which tracks are mine, but I don't want them all to sound the same. I like to keep people guessing, thats whay I named my new EP 'Unpredictable'. I'd say my tracks are minimal but somewhat innovative.

Interview
MIND DRIVE
(Massive): When did you first start Djing?
(Mind drive): Well, I first got into dance music when a friend of mine dragged me to a club called the clubhouse, in cincinatti. I had to be literally dragged to this place because i hated anything that had to do with dance music. So after a while i started going to this club on a regular basis, and got to know the DJ's. I started hanging out by the DJ booth and I used to ask alot of questions. Finally I asked one of the DJ's to teach me how to spin. The first record I learned to beat match was Perfect Kiss by New Order. So around 88 or 89 acid house started coming in to that club and I really liked that kind of music, so I started buying it on a regular basis, and that is how I got into DJing.
(Massive): How do you think your music as well as your technique has evoloved since your early days as a DJ?
(Mind Drive): I think I've become alot more technical,in terms of what I can do with a mix or what-ever. I've also become alot more aware of the kinds of music that I like and the kind of music a crowd will respond to. When I first started out I was playing alot of mainstream kinds of music , now I'd call the trax that I spin kind of, like , funky but with a techno edge. Like kind of a technofunk.
(Massive): When you spin what do you do to manipulate a crowd? What kind of feeling do you try to convey to the crowd?
(Mind Drive): I like long sets in which I can bring the crowd up and down over the course of that hour or so. I like starting out with a minimalistic track and then I like to build and build and build and then I'll take them back down, and then back up again.
(Massive): How did the Gravity Project come to be and what was your place in it?
(Mind Drive): That started out when I moved up here(Madison)from Cincinatti to go to school. I just happend to meet acouple of other people that were into raveing and we decided that we wanted to throw some partys here in Madison because there was not much of a scene. Gravity was actually the brainchild of a guy named John Chapilis. See I was

Interview
JUST ALWAYS THE DJ. I NEVER HAD MUCH SAY IN THAT AT ALL. I JUST WORKED ON GETTING OTHER DJ'S TO COME AND SPIN.
(MASSIVE): WHAT, IN YOUR EYES IS THE CURRENT STATE OF THE MIDWEST SCENE?
(MIND DRIVE): THE MID WEST SCENE HAS GOTTEN LARGER ON A LOT OF LEVELS, BUT I QUESTION WHY ALOT OF PEOPLE GOTO PARTIES. I'VE BEEN NOTICEING ALOT OF PEOPLE GETTING FUCKED UP BEYOND BELIEF. I'D LIKE TO THINK THAT MOST OF THE PEOPLE THAT STILL DO GO TO THE PARTIES GO FOR THE MUSIC. IT'S JUST HARD TO GO TO A PARTY LIKE INTERSTELLER OUTBACK AND SEE A GIRL OD ON HEROIN. I FOUND THAT REALLY DISHEARTING. I HOPE THAT PEOPLE HAVENT LOST SIGHT OF WHAT THIS WHOLE THING IS ABOUT. SOME TIMES I FEEL LIKE THATS BEEN HAPPENING ALOT LATELY.
(MASSIVE): WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE DJ'S AND THE DIFFERENT STYLES OF MUSIC BEINGING PLAYED IN THE MIDWEST RIGHT NOW?
(MIND DRIVE): ALOT OF GOOD TRANZ IS COMEING OUT OF THE MIDWEST RIGHT NOW, AND HOUSE MUSIC IS MAKING A DEFFINITE MARK. I THINK THAT ALOT MORE PEOPLE NEED TO OPEN UP TO HOUSE, BECAUSE THERE IS ALOT MORE TO HOUSE THAN PEOPLE THINK. AS FAR AS THE TOTAL MIDWEST IS CONCERNED IT IS REALLY DIVERSE. WHAT'S GOING ON IN CHICAGO IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FROM WHATS GOING ON IN MILWAUKEE.
I NOTICE THAT WHEN I GO TO A PARTY...AND THERE'S MUSIC, NOT NECESSARILY THE "RIGHT" TYPE OF MUSIC BUT, MUSIC THAT CREATES THE TYPE OF VIBE THAT MAKES PEOPLE WANT TO GO AROUND AND TALK TO EACH OTHER AND YOU SEE SMILES ON FACES...RATHER THAN GOING TO A PARTY AND FEELING NERVOUS BECAUSE OF THE NOISE COMING OUT OF THE SPEAKER.
(MASSIVE): YEAH, NO KIDDING. WHERE HAVE YOU SPUN, AND WHAT WAS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE?
(MIND DRIVE): MINNAPOLIS, CHICAGO, SAINT LOUIS, MILWAUKEE, CINCINATTI...NASHVILLE ON NOVEMBER 12TH. AS FAR AS THE MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE...I LIKED KARSTEN ALOT. THERE WAS ALOT OF MUSIC BEING PLAYED THAT I ENJOYED LISTENING TO AND...MY SET WAS ON AND I HAD ALOT OF FUN. I ALSO LIKED JOY UP IN MINNEAPOLIS.
(MASSIVE): WHAT DO YOU FEEL SEPERATES YOU FROM THE AVERAGE HOUSE/TECHNO DJ?
(MIND DRIVE): I THINK THAT I DON'T LIMIT MYSELF TO ONE TYPE OF MUSIC...IF I LIKE THE TRACK WHETHER IT BE TECHNO SOUNDING OR BREAKBEATY, I'LL PLAY IT. I THINK MY MAIN CONCERN IS THE TYPE OF VIBE I WANT TO BUILD AT A PARTY. ALOT OF THE MUSIC I PLAY...I GET INTO THE EMOTIONAL SIDE OF IT. I'VE ALWAYS WONDERED WHAT WOULD HAPPEN AT A PARTY IF IN THE MIDDLE OF SET, I PLAYED A HALF HOUR OF AMBIENT AT THE HEIGHT OF A PARTY...I WONDER HOW PERCEPTIVE THE MIDWEST SCENE WOULD BE TO THAT. I LIKE A SET TO GO UP AND DOWN RATHER THAN LINEAR. I'M EXCITED TO SEE MORE DJ'S GETTING EXPERIMENTAL WITH THEIR MUSIC. I REALLY RESPECT MILES MAEDA...HE'S TRYING ALOT OF THINGS.
(MASSIVE): ALL TIME FAVORITE RECORD?
(MIND DRIVE): COCTEAU TWINS...THOSE EYES THAT MOUTH.
(MASSIVE): WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE DRUG USE AT PARTIES?
(MIND DRIVE): I THINK IT'S ANYONE'S PERSONAL DECISION WHAT THEY WANT TO DO AT A PARTY. I DON'T DISAGREE WITH PEOPLE TAKING A HIT O' ECSTACY TO ENHANCE THE MUSIC ENJOYMENT. I DO THINK THAT THE AMOUNT OF DRUGS AT PARTIES LATELY HAS BEEN EXCESSIVE BECAUSE I'VE SEEN SO MANY PEOPLE THAT ARE SO MESSED UP THAT THEY CAN'T EVEN TALK.
CHECK OUT MR. MIND DRIVE AT QUADRASONIC'S NEXT EVENT ON OCTOBER 22ND ALONG WITH NICK NICE AND OTHER SPECIAL GUESTS...

Interview
As far as Jungle goes over here stateside, there is no other DJ who is more in tune with the UK Hardcore-Jungle scene than Chicagos own JJ Jellybean.
We had a chance to speak to the 'bean at CHA headquarters recently, what follows are his views on the UK scene, Chicago, and the evolution of Jungle into what is is now.
An interview with....
THE JUNGLIST 'DON.
C.H.A. Chicago Hardcore Authority — C.H.A. 1994
By: Blackeye. JVT Massive 1994
Since the focus of this interveiw is upon Jungle please start by giving us a little background on the UK Jungle scene...
JJ-Well , Londons Jungle scene comes from the rave scene-the breakbeats. First ragga is an essential element-the pirates have played an important role in the evolution. Now rare groove comes to Jungle, soul comes to Jungle, Hip Hop comes to Jungle, Techno comes to Jungle. Nowadays Jungle is the lick, and everybody wants to be a part of it. But if it wasnt for the likes of SL2, Project 1, Urban Shakedown, and Dj's like Phantasy, Grooverider, Fabio and so many others we wouldnt be where we are today.
So how has the Jungle scene in London evolved from rushing music for white kids, to its present status?
JJ-Well as more blacks went to the raves in London you started to hear the breakbeats, then the ragga influence, nowadays you still see Jungle DJ's at raves, but the Jungle scene itself has been separating. You have your strictly Jungle events, the big DJ's are Ron, Jumpin Jack Frost, Hype, Brockie, Kenny Ken, Rap, Groverider and Fabio are still at it. These DJ's will play the strictly Jungle Do's but will play the raves as well. Jungle will go down at the big Hardcore raves, but you wont hear hardcore at the Jungle Do's. The Jungle crowds are conissuers, they're specialists, So in a way Jungle is still is part of the rave scene, but the rave scene is not a part of the Jungle scene. You can be a Junglist and not a raver.
How does Chicagos Jungle scene compare to that of Londons?
JJ-I think everyone really involved with Chicagos Jungle scene is very aware of what is going on in London, and has a deep respect for what they're doing. Obviously the toons are the same, and I feel that the vibe we bring is the same as well.
Well in what ways is it different then?
JJ-Well obviously the crowd is different, here we're not playing 90% of our sets off Dub Plates. A group of DJ's, producers, artists, promoters, etc aren't really present to keep pushing the music forward so it's a little easier for things to get stagnant over here, but I feel we do a good job at keeping it fresh.
It seems that there is no other place like Chicago anywhere in the states where there is a large group of Jungle enthusiasts pushing Jungle in the UK style, any comments on that?
JJ-Chicago is the place to be for Jungle in the states, a few other cities have it going on miami's in it, L.A.'s in it, Houston's got some good DJ's , but Chicago's really the lick when it comes to Jungle. We have the DJ's , the promoters, the crowds, everything to really take off.
And what do you see for the future of Jungle here in Chicago?
JJ-I think Chicago will follow the London scene, definitley with perhaps a bit more emphasis on the drum and bass side of tings than the ragga, since we're playing to a predominately white crowd.
In London, and Toronto and now even Chicago too any Jungle set is accompanied with an MC, what are your veiws on MC's?
JJ-Most people don't realize how much work it is to be a good MC. You need to have an instictive feel for the rapid transitions. The DJ and MC have to communicate and work together in bringing the crowd to higher states. It's real unity.
You're involved with Chicagos new promotional group 'Jungle'Ting' How did this all come about?
JJ- Jungle'Ting actually got its start on the way home from an event in Toronto. It was myself, Candice, and Su and we just decided since nothing was happening in Chicago the way we wanted it to we would just have to bring the London vibe ourselves. Then we met with Roger and Lori (RIPE), and got tings started.
Page 10
Interview
THE JUNGLIST' DON.
CONTINUED.
How do you feel about our little Chicago scene and the way things are going, Jungle-wise and what not?
JJ-Chicago is the lick. It always has been. Now that the promoters here have gotten their shit lined up properly, we're back on track. And I'm glad Jungle is a part of that. At the end of the day it's the punters that make the scene, and in Chicago we have the best crowds.
Yes, now of course this being issue 666 of massive magazine and all could you please end by telling us your thoughts and veiws on bealzubub?
JJ-I don't beleive in satan as an other worldly being. Satan is the people who live upon the Earth and manifest themselves in a satan way. In other words, satan is the one who's trying to keep you down. Good and Evil live in all.
Anyone that does good, it is possible for them to do evil, for the two spirits, satan and god, live in everyone.
It is just the concept of the human to conceive good or evil.
But I give praise to the Most High, eternal High, triumphant High, high Selassie-I, Jehovah, Jah high, first ancient King of creation, King Alpha, Queen Omega, the beginning without end, first without last, Protectorate of all humans' internal, and Ruler of the universal world, the King of the Kings and the Lord of the Lords, the Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah, Light of the Most High, and Light of this world, I-n-I divine Majesty, I-n-I I-vine pure Majesty, Emperor Haile, Almighty, Jehovah, Selassie, first ancient Father of the Universe.
A'ight, now that we've burned our way to the end of the spliff I gotta say big up to the Jellybean, be sure tocheck him out at all future Jungle'Ting events drop 'em lines at: (708)-786-3955. HOLD TIGHT!
WHAT JUNGLE MEANS TO ME.
BY: JJ JELLYBEAN
Jungle is not a Saturday Night Fling, it is a way of life, a fever,
Malaria- something that takes over and becomes ever present.
A lot of people may Dis C.H.A. for being narrow minded- they
just dont understand how important it is to us,
how important Jungle becomes.
Jungle is deep music.
Those who say it is undanceable should listen to the bassline.
Every good Jungle track will have a half-speed b-line.
Groove to it!
In short Jungle is music to to explore, to live by,
For the Ravers as well as the Lovers.

ALICE BEHIND the IRON CURTAIN
russia/paris scene report by nick nice
Greetings once again from Paris...well, actually the French countryside since I'm writing this article on the train to Le Havre. As the title suggests, this report is about the scene in Russia. Last year, I had the chance to spin in Moscow along with Chicago DJ Roz B Liquid and it really changed my life. The parties themselves weren't as mind-blowing as the way of life there. I was struck by the lack of everyday things that you and I take for granted (like toilet paper, drinkable water, food, etc). Anyways, at this time there wasn't much of a scene in Moscow...in fact, they didn't even have turntables there. We had to bring over the Technics since the local DJ's mixed with tapes and CD's (no pitch control either). The crowd danced to the trance and progressive house I played but the parties had no real energy since I think the crowd had a hard time identifying with the music. Well, one year later I had the opportunity to return...this time we didn't have to bring the turntables since there are now a grand total of five pair of Technics in Moscow (a city of 10 Million people). The city itself has changed dramatically in the past year - becoming like your average western European city. No longer do you have to worry about how to find something decent to eat or trying to avoid going to the bathroom for as long as possible. It's actually become liveable...if you've got the money. The problem in Moscow is that there's no middle class...there's a small but growing group of rich elite (95% mafia people) and a huge, ever-growing lower class. One can only fear what's going to happen in the next elections there. But anyways...enough politics, onto the parties. The first party I spun at was at a new club called Manhatten Express, a serious mafia money laundering club that has a capacity of 1,000 yet has 200 people on the payroll. There's some fucked up things going on in this place during the day. The club itself was beautiful, apparently designed by the same guy who designed the legendary NYC club during the late 70's...Studio 54. Moscow doesn't have a club exclusively devoted to underground dance music...rather, there's special nights at various clubs. Moscow actually has an underground scene developing. The crowd at this party was tremendous...lots of people dressed up in weird costumes and a really interesting mix of ravers, celebrities, and mafia types. Yet, somehow, everyone got along together well. I played basically a selection of house and party grooves- no trance, hardcore, etc. The crowd seriously got into it, screaming and clapping during the breaks and basically just having a good time. The people who invited me told me that this was the first party in Moscow where people really started screaming and going crazy like that. One of the guys who invited me, Igor, singlehandedly got the crowd pumped up and sort of taught people how to scream during the breaks- at first he seriously freaked people out with his screaming and whistling, but the crowd eventually caught on. This was the

best party of the week by far. I spun another party at this club called Hermitage, but it was a bit of a disaster since there were serious sound problems and the club didn't do a good job promoting the night. I also spun at this super-trippy party in an artist's loft. This place was way too weird to be able to put into words. All I know is that the Russians need to chill-out on the LSD a bit. If you think the Midwest has drug problems, you haven't seen anything compared to the substance abuse in Moscow. There's even a club there called LSDance where they didn't even bother to serve alcohol- rather, they sell a $20 'magic potion' with LSD in it. Since the Mafia controls Russia, you can do anything if you've got the money- you could even have a rave on the Red Square if you had the cash. I also had a chance to spin on the one Russian radio station that plays dance music. Every Friday night for 4 hours on Radio Maximum they have an underground dance show with guest djs and party information for all of Russia. Since there's only about four FM stations in Russia, this station is listened to by an average of 15 million people nationwide. I'm glad they told me there were 15 million people listening AFTER I'd finished djing- I think I would have been a bit nervous otherwise. All in all there is a definite scene beginning in
ON THE RADIO they asked me why i didnt play the same style as the previous year - they didn't understand ME when i told them that one year is an ETERNITY in the HOUSE scene
Russia- musically they're a bit behind the times, but that's to be expected in a country where capitalism has only just begun. On the radio they asked me why I didn't play the same style as the previous year- they didn't really understand me when I told them that one year is an eternity in the house scene. It's like asking an old industrial dj why he doesn't play industrial anymore. Music and people need to evolve to stay fresh. Speaking of evolution...this will probably be my last scene report from France. I've been here for two years now and have been following the scene here for four. ( I was a student here before.) I don't really see a future for myself here since the scene here is really dying as a whole and I want something more with my life. I plan to continue djing, but I want to work on some production, and in order to do that I need to live in the states where life is about four times less expensive than in Paris. I still love France, but after two years of non-stop djing and travelling all over the place every weekend I feel it's time for a change. So I'm starting a new night at the Cardinal in Madison ( 418 E Wilson St, tel. 608-251-0080) called ULTRAGROOVE. It's starting Friday, Oct. 21st and every Friday thereafter. It's basically going to be a house / party grooves night where the main focus in on FUN- which is something I think we forget that the scene is all about. So if you've got an attitude or a drug problem don't even bother coming because that's not the kind of vibe I'm looking for! I'll also be spinning at the QUADRASONIC event on OCT 22. As usual you can still write to me ( until Oct. 14) @ Nick Nice, 40 rue Jacob, 75006 PARIS, FRANCE.

the nutty dork
sad but true, i'm a nutty dork. all my friends and all my enemies call me mean names like "goofy nerd" or "silly knob", and this makes me mad and angry. so one day i got back at everyone, i stood up for myself, i looked fear and danger right in the eye, and i didn't even cry! because when all the bullies called me names again i just said to them, "i'm not afraid of you, and your naughty name calling, it can't hurt me because i've got this.....". {all the bullies gasped} as i pulled out my magical chunk of sod. and they all replied, "wow, that sure is a mighty cool hunk of grass, i guess we where wrong to call you bad names, we sure are sorry. maybe you could find it in your heart to forgive us?" i decided that they where'nt so bad after all. and so my new friends and i walked off into the sunset.

Dave Clark - RED 2 remixes (Reload Records)
Dave Clark sure knew what the hell he was doing when he made these songs. The backspinnin' style added to an eardrum damaging bassline makes this record fuckin' rad, period. (yanu)
Pulse- Surface Tensions (Harthouse, Eye-Q, Germany)
Minimalistic, yet addicting trance that seems to get better and better every time you listen to it. Being a dual record EP, filled with 7 long blissful tracks, it is a must have for every trancehead in town. (yanu)
Kosmic Kommando - Frequenseize (Rephlex, UK)
A full album of acid, as well as some trancey stuff thrown in for good measure, is sure to explore the deepest realms of your mind. Written by Mike Dred, these 16 songs are sure to please, pound, and entrance. (yanu)
DJ Hell - Allerseelen/ Hot in the heels of love (Sub-Up, Germany)
2 songs remixed by Jeff Mills and Dave Clark- bless this record lots of holy water. A harder remix by Dave Clark and a slow trancier one by Jeff Mills add an interesting twist. Coming from DJ Hell's somewhat unexiting album, these remixes by Europe's greatest shows promise for the future of DJ Hell's music.
Jupiter...Destiny featuring Mason James (Radikal)
New release from Radikal. This is one of my favorites...great straight forward house with good sampling and smooth vocals. My favorite version is the deep inside uranus mix...very uptempo with a good use of the sample "deep inside of me." Also has a nice combination of organs and piano.
Artificial Intelligence Two...Various Artists (Warp/WaxTrax/TVT). On accaison, a compilation rises to the top of the countless techno trash CD's and dull sleepy music. This is electronic listening music at its finest...featuring the likes of Speedy J, Autechre, Richard Kirk, Seefeel, B12, and more. Highlights include Seefeel's excellent "Spangle" and the Higher Intelligence Agency's "Selinite." This is a must have...now released domestically at a cheaper price for us american trash.
DJ Culture 2...Stress Records Compilation (Stress/Moonshine). Fifteen tracks of slammin euro progressive house adorn this disc...continuosly mixed in a flawless fashion by The Edge's (Orlando, Fl) resident Dj Kimball Collins and Los Angles' finest, Steve Loria. Excellent tracks include Reefa Madness' "Drummage III" and Kathy Brown's "Turn me Out." Excellent bumpy house to put you in the mood for...

Analog Heaven...Various (Sonic, US). Yet another excellent compilation featuring some of the finest acid masters from New York and beyond. Twelve tracks...ranging from kicking hardcore acid whallops to Trax style acid house. Artists include Walker, Adam X, Rising Sons, and Prototype 909. It's all good...
Trancefusion 2...Various (Sonic, US). Yet another from Sonic Records...maintaining their quality standard as of late. Twelve tracks more on the trance tip...done by some of the most respected names in techno music, globally. Excellent cuts are Jam And Spoon's classic "Stella," Andy Weatherall/Sabres "Still Fighting," and Orbital's "Remind." An excellent introduction to trance music and an excellent reminder of how far it's come.
Terre Thaemlitz...Tranquilizer (Instinct Ambient). Blissful spacey trax...multi-dimensional and dream like. Over one hour of music from a very innovative artist. Also check out OmniCon, Human Mesh Dance, and more from Terre Thaemlitz.
Kickin Hardcore Nations...Various (Instinct, US). Kickin Records UK has teamed up with New York's Instinct records to produce one of 1994's most slammin hardcore compilations. Ranging from super hard ala Zekt and Pinhead (a Mr. Bill classic) to high energy acid tracks like 303 System and Union Jack. Other artists include DJ Hell, Mike Inc, and The Hypnotist. Good-ish.
Underworld...Dubnobasswithmyheadman. Domestically released by WaxTrax, Underworld is becoming the next techno sensation. All tracks continue in their progressive house/trance vein...adding unorthodox instruments like guitars (Gasp!). Most of the tracks are excellent quality (Dark and Long...CowGirl...etc), its only when the vocals kick in that I lose interest. My advice is get this along with Underworld's more underground 12" releases for a more defined view of their music. (note: their hard as titanium classic, Rez, has been re-released as well on white vinyl...that is a must.

Mark Verbos...Acid Machine (Incorporated Records 001, US). Milwaukee's 303 fiend has finally pressed his acid manipulations to wax on Milwaukee's OTHER record label, Incorporated records. Four tracks which are diverse and experimental at times ...but always full of mental analogue assaults which will turn your brain to mush or have you begging for more. Two mid tempo acid bangers...one kickin' hard acid track...and an intelligent track of exquisite design dropping 303's like no other. Get this now or I will beat you up.
Cosmic Baby...Loops of Infinity (Logic, UK). Four remixes on two twelve inches of the title track to Mr. Cosmic's latest Lp. The Arpeggiators remix is by far the best...adding a bit more experimental edge to this track. Very much in his own style, Cosmic Baby has created another classic German trance cut. Also of interest on Logic/Save The Vinyl is the Dolphin Ep of a few months back. This is one for conossieurs of the german trance stylee.
Dee-Lite...Dewdrops in the Garden (Elektra, US). Well...what can I say about this album except that it rocks the proverbial house in a major way. Dee-Lite's return is full of funky house loops, progressive acid tones, hip-hop style breaks, and the beautiful voice ala Lady Miss Kier. Best tracks are "Say Ahh," "Picnic in the Summertime," and "Apple-Juice Kissing." Alot less commercial and alot more interesting than any of their previous material...listen and learn. (also available is the 12" of "Picnic in The Summertime" featuring excelllent remixing for you DJ's seeking more elusive cuts).

Sigma 909 - Massive (good name)
Sigma 909 has changed labels for this- their latest release. Formerly on KNOR records, now on the faurly new John Doe. 4 tracks in all- very hard Gabber with some evil sounding samples thrown in. Sigma 909 has made a name for themselves with their last releases, and this one lives up to their reputation. (tyler)
303 Nation - Strobe Jams III
Finally #3 is released! People who are familiar with 303 Nation don't need a description. For those who don't know of them, it is a perfect example of mid tempo hard acid trance. 2 of the tracks are very smooth, the other 2 are a little harder and faster. Very nice work on this long awaited third edition. (tyler)
Audio Code- Alpha Express
A new release on Annihlator Records out of the U.K. They don't release many, but when they do, it is usually quality hardcore. Three tracks total on this 12", one is straight forward Gabber, fast and a little old-school sounding. The others are 303 heavy- one gabber- the other more hard trance-ish. Both are fairly fast. Another good release just to show good hardcore doesnt only come from Belgium! (tyler)
Dutch Concert - Slammin'
Latest from the Terror Traxx Group. This is #11 in the series. Good fast hard Gabber. There is also a nice hard trance track on the EP. In the track 'Paradise' there is some excellant stereo separation- the drums and highs bounce from left to right for a nice effect. I wish more groups would take the time to do little things like that, instead of pressing the first thing that rolls off their 909. (tyler)
The Orientalist- Transpositive
New on the Basic Energy label. A total of 4 glorious tracks of wonderful hard trance. 2 tracks are slower with nice acid overtones, smooth breaks, and a tribal feel to it. The others are a bit faster and a little harder- also heavy with 303. All around a terrific release, good quality acid and well thought out. It will spend a lot of time on my turntable! (tyler)
The Liberator- Western Promise
The latest choci's chewns release. This label is becoming one of the top underground labels. I personally buy everything released on this label. Great hard trance, good thumpin' bass, very good 303 lines, a nice use of samples, and smooth breaks. 3 tracks total. Western Promise sounds like Roy Rogers traded in the Trigger for a Roland 303. Lattitude and Acidtude are my favorites. Excellant hard trance. (tyler)
The Sound of Cleveland City - Various Artists
Cleveland City Records puts out a new compilation of the house sounds they are responsible for. Artists include Chubby Chunks, Direct 2 Disc, B-Line, Screen II, TST Fever Posse, and more. Also include (with the LP) is a Bonus 12". The 12" is unreleased, and is a limited edition item. Available on LP and CD. (tyler)
DJ Skull - Met 'L' Gear
A newer release from the world renowned DJAX label. Dj Skull's latest tracks- good hard house with building overtones. The majority of the tracks are minimal but good. Basic DJAX style Chicago house influenced heavily by the Europeans. 4 tracks in all and on Red colored vinyl! (tyler)
Esco B - Enjoy the Trip (oscillator, Germany)
Acid/Trance with a solid beat describes this 4 track record from Europe. Hi-energy 303 patterns along with 'trippy' samples make it pump! There's even a harder remix almost certain to blow speakers somewhere. (yanu)

Shazz...A Taste Of Manhattan (F Communications, France)
Excellent house of the deep variety from Laurent Garnier and Eric Morand's new (well...not really) label. Five tracks are readily available on this slab of wax, with slick remixes by LN'S and additional production by Ludovic Navarre. An outstanding release: one which should rise to the pinnacle of French House. Also of interest on "F" these days are Juan Trip's "Masterpiece Trilogy Volume One" and the remarkable DS series.
Direckt...Two Fatt Guitars remixes (UFG, UK)
The smash euro-funk house track from 1993 has returned on two twelve inches, featuring the two original mixes as well as manipulation by San Francisco's DJ Ef-X and Digit, Andy Stevenson, Corporation Express, and Judge Jules. The rockingest, rock steady mix is that by Mr. Ef-X; dropping SF style breaks and a contorted guitar loop. While these mixes are relatively creative and better than bad...none of them rate higher than the original version. No need to fix what's not broken..."LE FREAK!"
Daydream...The Hunter (Clubstitute, UK)
After a brief stint on the tribal tip, Robin "Jay Dee" Albers has returned with two new mixes showcasing the style which made him famous. Both "the Hunter" and "Indian Blood" combine catchy organ lines much like "Plastic Dreams" with the heavy tribal kick of "Music is SO Special." An excellent follow up...once again available after some legal problems regarding it's release.
Lex Loofah...Jacked (Phat, UK)
More jackin' house with old school techno overtones and a bumpin bass kick. Tis kind of a dissappointment compared to their previous release on Warp (Lex Loofah...Freaky Deaky - Warp 41)...defintely not as catchy but still worthy of play.
Romanthony...In The Mix (Azuli, UK)
The new Romanthony Ep is mediocre at best compared to the ever popular "Let Me Show You Love" and Trojan Horse ep of earlier this year. This one is a tribute to old school NYC house DJ Tony Humphries, sampling from a very familiar record and creating a very average garage sound. Nothing miserable but nothing of merit either.
Peter Vriends...Quadripart Project (Smile, US). The first release from New York DJ DB's label is an excellent departure into the realm of ambient house. Peter Vriends combines a funky ass kick with colorful washes of sound and creative ambience. Two tracks...both following the same percussive yet peaceful route. Look for the full length Lp out soon featuring eleven new tracks. Very excellent release.

Cypher...Acid Love (Sorted, US).
This Ep is one of two new releases from New York DJ James Christian, containing three very distinct mixes of the title track. The "tribal mix" combines a kick reminescent of "Quoth" (Polygon Window) with a barrage of bongos; the "acid mix" drops some 303 twiddling into the mix while the "trance mix" follows an EyeQ/MFS formula. Each are building progressive tracks worthy of your time...Check it.
Twizzler Ep (Sorted, US).
Four tracks of intelligent acid adorn this twelve from Mr. Kenneth Haggerty and Can Oral. The definite highlight is "3 O'Clock High" which stomps in a San Francisco trance fashion; throwing down a bit o' breaks for flavour. This mover is a fine experiment in the ever growing realm of acid trance.
Remould...Soular (Limbo, UK).
Two mixes of agressive 23rd Precinct/Limbo style hardhouse with acid lines dominating. "VS1" is chock full of analog craftsmanship that bumps by at around 135 bpm. "VS2" adds a few spacey keyboard loops and bleeps which help build into trance of epic proportions. Get it.
Hardfloor...Mr. Anderson/Fish and Chips (Harthouse, Germany).
Once again, Hardfloor has returned from the bowels of analogue with two tracks guaranteed to inflict critical dancefloor energy. "Fish and Chips" follows the usual Zenker/Bondzio formula of building acid lines and drumrolls whereas "Mr. Anderson" keeps things at a minimal level and slow tempo...dropping a distorted 303 and some flanging effects later into the mix. Yet another kickin' track...as expected.
James Christian Ep (X-Sight Records, US).
Tis the second of new releases from the Limelight's James Christian...five tracks of super-slammin' progressive house. Highlights include "Slave" which bounces along with a nice organ loop and punchy bass line. Also of interest is the tribal styled track "Mindgames." Very excellent Ep.
XPress2...Rock 2 House remixes (Junior Boys Own, UK).
Richie Hawtin and Felix Da Housecat pick up the remix honors on the current Ep from Rocky, Diesel, and Ashley. The Housekat remix contains the much expected wild pitch tracky hold...getting quite noisy near the climax, losing it's dancefloor appeal almost entirely. However, Mr. Plastikman wins the award with his excellent acid house tinkering...alot more melodic than his usual material. Not Bad.

Trance is usually achieved at communal rituals, with plenty of loud music and dancing. the specifics, the costumes, music, and dance - vary from culture, but the pattern underneath is identical: loud music and vigorous dancing lead to a state of overstimulation that can produce a form of egolessness that is the ground for any sacred exploration.

O.C.- TIME'S UP / WILD PITCH
It don't get any doper than this. O.C.- who made his first appearance on Organized Konfusion's "Fudge Pudge" a few years back, comes with a slammin new single "Times Up". A back to basics approach on this single with a simple drum loop and piano hook put together by Buck Wild and O.C.'s 'death to fake and wack M.C.'s' message. He definatly has a style to call his own- with thoughts flowin' in every direction. The thing that makes this track stand out the most is the lyrical content. Nobody's pimpin' or getting shot, just straight up reality. "My album will manifest many things/ that I saw did or heard about/ or told first hand/ never word of mouth". No frontin' here, straight up rhymes, straight up beats. Stictly butter.
BIG DADDY KANE- IN THE PJ'S b/w SHOW & PROVE/ MCA
The Big Daddy steps up again. After his last two lackluster albums many people wonder if the Kane could come back correct. Well "Aint't No Half Steppin'" here. The A-side cut "In The PJ's" is on the blunted tip using a nice Barry White sample (what a surprise) to get ya laid back. As for subject matter, nothing complex, just about kicking it in the PJ's. A very catchy chorus that definatly makes this track so dope. The B-side is a pass the mic that catches mad wreck for Kane, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Shyiem, Big Scoob, Sauce, and J.Z.. This jam will definetly get your head nodding, strictly East Coast here. Long live the Kane.
KWEST THA MADD LAD- 101 THINGS TO DO WHILE I'M WITH YOUR GIRL/ AMERICAN
This record's crazy funny, straight up. Some wild production on this record, simple but wild. The highlight of this record is Kwest's flow. Even though his lyric's aren't the deepest, his ability to flow with the beats make's him all that. His story telling ability ranks up there with the best. So boy's hide your girls, cause when Kwest is around he's going to play the mack.
MIC GERONIMO- SHIT'S REAL b/w HEMMIN' HEADS/ BLUNT RECORDINGS
Straight out of "Crazy-ass Queens", Mic Geronimo - who's been blowing up the underground with his first single "Shits Real". On the laid back tip with gripping text that creates a paradox for listeners. The beats put together by his long-time friend DJ Irv, who's done production work for the Hoodratz and Harlem Knights, set's the vibe with his blunted reality. Mic Geronimo comes with the skills, talking about life in Queens that's put the listener right in his shoes.
Page 34
Reviews
The second track on the record "Hemmin' Heads", picks up the tempo and gives Geronimo a chance to flex his technique. At times he sounds like Nas, but who' going to complain about that? A fat single in all that leaves a lot of anticipation for the album, which should be out in the coming month.
CRAIG MACK- FLAVA IN YA EAR/ BAD BOY
No escaping this jam. TV, radio, clubs... everywhere ya go there's flava in ya ear. But no one's complaining, especially not Craig Mack, who definatly deserves this success. After years of paying dues to the East Coast underground it was about time his shit blew up. A fat-ass beat by Easy Mo Bee that get's all parts of your body nodding and makes ya start jumping. Then Craig Mack comes and attacks the brain, bustin' off line after line making him one of the dopest M.C.'s around. This jam is guaranteed to catch wreck at any party coast to coast and with Craig Mack- "the new sheriff in town" it's all good.
KING JUST- WARRIOR'S DRUM b/w MOVE ON 'EM STOMP/ BLACK FIST RECORDS
Straight from the dopest reservation around, Staten Island, the Chief Rocka of the Shaolin Tribe, King Just coming from the depths of the underground with the "Warrior's Drum". This brother be scalping sucker M.C.'s from coast to coast, with a boomin' drum loop and trumpet hook put together by RNS (Shyiem) and equally mad lyrics from Just. His hyperactive flow put's his rhymes right up in your face and then when the chorus comes you better take cover, cause everybody be jumping then, "Hay-Ya Hay-Ya Hay-Ya Ho!", damn he's on point. The B-side's "Move On 'Em Stomp" is just as hype, featuring the Shaolin soldiers. So round up the tribe, pack the peace pipe and get down to the drum.
PMD- I SAW IT CUMMIN'/ RCA
After the bitter break up with Erick Sermon, the "Microphone Doctor" returns with "I Saw It Cummin'", the first single from his upcoming solo album. This is classic Parris Smith, deep muddy funk grooves and his stilted style talking all the hard shit. This single shows that the creative output of EPMD came from both Parrish and Erick, too bad they can't get back together, it just doesn't seem right to hear Parrish with out the "Green-eyed Bandit". I'm sure his upcoming album will be the bomb, but we can only hope both sides will look past their differences and recreate the magic that made them so dope.

Mystic Bill
Mystic Bill - 'Delirium' Sampler
One of many Delirium (J2 etc. -Kentucky) tapes that, through special agreement between Delirium and given Dj's, are sold throughout the midwest and south to expose DJ's of any given area to the rest of the raving population. Though Mystic William is no stranger to these parts, this tape serves up Bill's classic style of hardbeating house, tekkyfunk, and just plain danceable strangeness. This tape also features that classic 'Preacher Man' track, which boils us in delightful sin and makes your loins pump to the beat (is this too graphic?)

DJ Sho - Tape #0
The man puttin' Purdue on the 'Rave outposts of America' map releases a cup of caffeinated trance with tads of acid- a definate 'warm, glowing feeling in the chest' tape. Sho is an up and comer to watch out for, provided he doesn't wind up roaming sleepless nights through the endless plains (and all that fuggin' wheat) of Indiana.

DJ Tron - Fucking Ballistic + Fucking Mental (oct. 94 release)
If it was burning your britches that all we're reviewing this issue was house and trance, well here's something for all the gabba's that will make you BURN IN HELL (burn in acid?) For those of you who thought hardtech growlcore was sipping tea with the dinosaurs, rest assured that young Jeffry the porno store employee is here to destroy you. (ok, Fucking Mental is more on the hard acid trance tip, but I know he'll come to his senses) ROCK ON.

R.P. Smack - Angelic Rhythms
Who says breaks are dark and gloomy? Mr. Smack's tape is filled with some of the most uplifting breaks I've heard- pure positivity. Lots of nice drum 'n bass with breaks of ambience throughout- very smooth. It's very nice to see all the styles of breaks represented these days, with all respect to Jungle Ting for throwing some of the best parties this summer, guiding us to our future. So, all rudebwoys, badgirls, and ragamuffins rush out for the RP injection.

David Hollands - The Future of Rhythm
This tape is perhaps the best selection of all tape reveiws this issue. Dave Hollands, of Muncie, Indiana releases a nicely packaged and aurally pleasing collage that takes us through a journey of Trance, hard Trance, House, acid, and even disco without breaking the musical seam. A plus to this tape is a track listing on the sleeve so you can buy that baby on vinyl long after the tape wears out. 'Future' is a definate pleaser for any occasion- whether your driving that long trip home (say, through Indiana- cornfield hell), to chilling with pals to downright pimpin'- it will keep your head moving and your mind swimming at the same time.

KENNY JAMMIN' GINO w/ DJ TRIPLE THREAT- JUST JOKES
Coming from the unknown gold mine of DJ talent, Racine, DJ's Kenny jammin' Gino and DJ Triple Threat take us into their house with funky beats and smooth mixes. Side A features Kenny who flows very nicely with a mixture of sultry deep house, hard-stomping house, and a bit of acid thrown in for good measure. The highlight, though, is that Kenny mixes some of his own tracks live into the groove. Very nice idea. Side B features DJ Triple Threat who continues to lay down jam after jam. At the end of the tape both dj's decide it's time for a little tag team action and begin to cut it up on the 1 & 2's. For those who truly want to be in sync with the underground, this for you.

DJ JOHN KEESEN- KOKOPELLA
Destination: Atlanta. Mission: To see 'The Man' Tommie Sunshine. At this point in our trip, were in Tennessee and we've exhausted all our tapes so far... then we happen to find the John Keesen tape that we thought we lost. So we pop it in. Being that none of us had heard it before, we didn't know what to expect- some sort of Trance? Words are not enough to describe this tape...the best way is different. It is a culmination of the mutated offspring of deep house, acid, trance, and slow breaks. Something in Denver's water must spawn admiration for some funky ass music selection- because nothing of the like has ever hit the midwest. Anyone doing a party- PLEASE bring this man back out. Respect to the Pharoah and the Away Team for doing so for 'Hypnosis'. The highlight of the tape is the techno remake of Deep Purple's 'Smoke on the Water'- which is excellant listening while driving through the mountains of Tennessee at 95 mph. Rock 'n Roll!

DJ THEE-O- Midnight on Mars Part Three
Los Angeles' only underground trance DJ of merit has returned with the soundtrack of the astral plane on one ninety minute cassette. This tape is full of mid-tempo esoteric jams, 303 twiddling, and washes of ambience backed with an 808 kick. Very moving and very innovative...candy for your mind and beats for your feet. Check out his previous "Synthetic/Organic" cassettes and the "Cybersex" series for more of your trance dance needs. Excellent music, mixing, production, and liner. Everything a growing boy/girl needs.

Mindrive - Day
Side A starts in a progressive upbeat trance state and glides into a happy-go-lucky tinkerbell flow. The tape carries your brain to Incan temples and foreign landscapes causing one to ponder the reason he calls himself Mindrive. This journey eventually carries us into the breakhaus that Mindrive is well known for- making him a man to keep an eye, and ear, on.

EFEX - Xth Attempt
The midwest's most versatile (perhaps the best) DJ takes on another experimental trip through trance. This time he tells Chewie to punch it and off we go on that fantastic voyage. Great respect goes to EFEX- whose 'attempt' tapes not only impress, but also expand your mind. Labels of house, hardcore, and what-not are thrown out the door to pure talent and experimentalism- taking the standard of being a DJ to new levels. EFEX is probably the only DJ that also allows some sarcasm to shine through on his tapes- as is shown on this tape with many of the midwest's well known DJ's, promoters, DJ's moms, and even Massive posse being sampled- setting a comedic stage. Check out anything EFEX has to offer- the talent shines through.
