Betcha thought this issue was never coming out! Believe me, we were wondering too. Anyway, here it is! I can think of many excuses & actual reasons for the delay...most of 'em being my fault (i.e. disorganized, no time, too busy, etc..) but the single largest reason is lack of $$ once again. So, if you think you know someone or a business that might be interested in advertising...please give 'em the Junglized advertising number: 407.898.6029...cause without ads, we've got no $$, and no $$ means no Junglized! Absolutely no thanx to people who reserved ad space and never sent us anything. We're getting better, tho at rounding up advertisers, so there should be no delay with the next issue. Also, my apologies to all of our loyal advertisers who sent in their ads ages ago...from now on, we're going to better align the ad due dates with the issue's release.
In Orlando, I'm pleased to see some of the club promoters and house/trip-hop DJ's finally coming around to the drum & bass sound! Most all promoters in the Northern cities book all types of DJ's at their parties for variety sake...maybe that will start happening here too.
Remember, if you left a number on the INFO LINE and no one called you back...it's not that we didn't want to...it's just that my phone bill was $500 last month and I really gotta take it easy! Try 407.898.6029 if you must speak to me!
Shouts to DJ Feelgood in Baltimore for having me up to Fever (what an amazing club!). Big up to the Sub Zero and especially DJ Shawn for taking care of me in Chicago ("Do you carry black DKNY jeans?") Shouts also to Raymond Roker at URB for representing Jungle in his magazine as the killer dance music that it is.
Next Issue, I promise to take care of the LA/West Coast scene! So anyone out there who's got something jungle going on...contact us!!
Finally, much respect to everyone who sent in demo tapes for the SUBURBAN BASE USA American Jungle Compilation! I was truly amazed at not only how many tapes I received, but at the fine quality of them as well! The CD is a "go" (see the Mateo interview)...so if you were one of the artists picked for the CD you should be contacted from Sub Base very soon.
Remember to send us a stamp for the next issue! Sorry again for the delay of this one...hopefully it was worth the wait!

Interview
Most know Marvellous Cain as the artist of 1994's top single "The Hitman" and the follow up, "Dubplate Style" on Suburban Base Records, but he's released many more tunes under the names The Darkman, Lion Man, Badman & more. He's been DJing since forever and has come up through day one of the Jungle/Breakbeat scene as an original Bad Bwoy selector. We asked him about his new record label, RUNNINZ, and what's up for the future...
JUNGLIZED: How did you get started DJing, were you making music before DJing, or the vice versa?
MARVELLOUS CAIN: Originally, we had a little soundsystem called Katmandu. Then back in 1988/89, I started to get into Acid House kinda thing and then it just took over, totally took over my life. But I've been DJing jungle/rave/hardcore, whatever it was called at the time, for about 7 and a half years. So I was a DJ before I was making jungle music.
JUNGLIZED: How did you get hooked up with Suburban Base Records?
MARVELLOUS CAIN: Through Sponge. See Sponge was already signed to Sub Base along with Pascal, and they were doing the JOHNNY JUNGLE releases. We went up there and I hung out while they were doing some business, then I had done "The Hitman" tune and offered it to Danny Donnelly-he turned it down. So we put it out on I.Q. Records and then Suburban Base put out the remixes. Then I did a tune called "Dubplate Style" and Danny put it out. So that's how I got signed to Suburban Base.
JUNGLIZED: Do you know how many units "The Hitman" sold?
MARVELLOUS CAIN: On the I.Q. original, which was just put out through a small distribution company called, Jumpstart, it sold 3,500 copies. On the remixes we did 2,000 on part one and 3,500 on the DJ Hype version (part 2).
JUNGLIZED: Do you get your DJing jobs through a booking agency?
MARVELLOUS CAIN: No. I do it myself. I lose alot of work that way, cause some people don't know how to get ahold of me, but then I don't have to give anyone else any money, you know what I mean? It was harder for me to break through, cause I don't live in London.
JUNGLIZED: Out of curiosity, what kind of fees do booking agency's charge?
MARVELLOUS CAIN: I think it's like 20-30% or something like that.
JUNGLIZED: You've recently started-up your own record label called RUNNINZ Records. Is that because you've got so many tunes you want to release?
MARVELLOUS CAIN: I was recording for Sub Base and Sponge had his label, I.Q. When Sponge finished I.Q., I could have carried on doing I.Q., but that meant I would have had to start-off the label again, cause there was a big break at the end with the last tunes only coming out as test presses. DJ Ron told me I should start my own label, you know, I'm like fucking right-I might as well start off my own little label-get 100% of everything! So I started it! But, I'm still doing work for Sub Base at the moment.
JUNGLIZED: Are you the only artist so far? Gonna sign anyone up anytime soon?
MARVELLOUS CAIN: I've got two others besides myself on the label, one's called Paul Newgun, and the other is DJ Libra. Libra's new track is called "Block Rocking Beats".
JUNGLIZED: How do you decide which tracks go on which label? Do you design a track specifically for a certain label?
MARVELLOUS CAIN: I've only got to do three tracks a year for Suburban Base, so if Danny asks me if I've got any tracks, I'll give him one and keep the rest for myself. That's how I decide what name to use. If I've got a track out under the "Marvellous Cain" name, then any other tunes that come out on any other label at the same time has to be under a different name.
"When you play the 'bad bwoy' tunes, you get the best response from the crowd. I mean they're all going 'bwop, bwop, bwop' and smashing up the place, bottles being banged up against the wall. That's the bad bwoy atmosphere!"
Page 4
Interview
JUNGLIZED: What other names have you gone under besides "Lion Man"?
MARVELLOUS CAIN: We've used the "Gunman", "Badman"... now for RUNNINZ, alot of the new ones will be under "Runninz Crew". I'm using names like "CoCain"...cause Swift was calling me Marvellous "Co Cain, so I thought I'd use that. We always go for stupid names. Like on one side of "The Gunman", me & Sponge called ourselves "Bakes & Salt Fish". We just said fuck it, put any old name down. People laugh when they see names like that.
JUNGLIZED: What about clearing samples in your tunes? Has that been a problem?
MARVELLOUS CAIN: Suburban Base has got to clear samples, they're a bigger label. Like with "Dubplate Style", it cost me £500 to clear that sample from Daddy Freddy, which is alright...But the "Hitman", fuckin 'ell, cause we didn't clear the sample, you know, and we got into a bit of trouble down the road.
JUNGLIZED: That's why the actual Cutty Ranks version came out?
MARVELLOUS CAIN: Yeah, and we had to sort 'em out with a few remixes for them to calm them down. But I ain't touchin' nothing too hard.
JUNGLIZED: Does "ruffer" music bring a "ruffer" crowd in England? We've been hearing about violence and stuff at some parties over there.
MARVELLOUS CAIN: Yeah you're right, that's true. You get the people goin' on the hate. But when you play the bad bwoy tunes, you get the best response from the crowd. I mean they're all going "bwop, bwop, bwop" and smashing up the place, bottles being banged up against the wall. That's the bad bwoy atmosphere. You get the violence over here now, but that's just the youth. The kids have too much trouble going on. They're trying to mug people to go out and buy their clothes. That's what's bringing the trouble.
JUNGLIZED: It's the same over here, when you hear about someone getting mugged cause someone wanted their Nikes...
MARVELLOUS CAIN: That's what it is over here. People are mugging people for their gold and you got idiots trying to go out and rob the bar and shit like that so the next day they can buy their Versace...or their rocks. Fuckin' rediculous mate.
JUNGLIZED: You spun at the Sub Base U.S.A./Moonshine Party in Los Angeles on New Years Eve, how did that go?
MARVELLOUS CAIN: It was alright! The L.A. party was called "Circa '96" and it was bad to fuck! Me & Rude Boy Monty thought it was gonnna be an 800 people kinda thing. Got to L.A., my mate told me they had sold 5000 advance tickets! I thought well that's alright. Got there that night, the place was called the Grand Olympian Building or something like that, and there was 10,000 people there! A mixture of crowds...house, techno, some mad-up fuckin' stuff I never heard in my life, trip-hop, and there was me, the one doin' the jungle and they fuckin' loved it! Monty got on the mic and told 'em how we do it in England is when you hear a tune you really, really like...make as much noise as possible and we'll rewind the tune for ya. The first tune, "Super Sharp Shooter Remix" got rewound 3 times! They were going mad to that...and the basslines were just killin' them the rest of the night. I had people askin' for autographs saying that was a blindin' set. That's the first time they had any proper jungle in L.A. They said the locals have to play what the promoters want them to play...like an "older stuff" set or something. They were happy cause someone came over from England to play. It wasn't at all like Orlando, I was quite shocked. They like their techno & intelligent in L.A., but in Orlando people seemed to like the jump-up & ragga.
JUNGLIZED: What do you think of the "Intelligent" versus "Jungle" split? Alot of kids in the USA are getting turned onto "jungle" strictly with the mellow-jazzy style records.
MARVELLOUS CAIN: Yeah, cause all those bastards get all the BIG record deals. Photek got a deal from Virgin for £380,000! That stuff is too advanced for my liking....it's not dance music. What we make and what us DJ's play is dance music! When you hear a tune from us, you can't help yourself but dance. I don't wanna hear a tune & fuckin' fall asleep in the corner!
JUNGLIZED: Any shouts to anyone?
MARVELLOUS CAIN: Yeah, to Jeffee, Leslee, AK, Josh (Baddyman) Swissman, Shawn and everyone else in America who loves Jungle to the bone! Over here, shouts to Monty, Sponge, Andy C., Ash & Danny Dollars.
Marvellous Cain at the Junglized party, Sept. 1995, Orlando, Florida.

ROB PLAYFORD
THE INTERVIEW
He's the "Busiest man in the Jungle" Founder of Moving Shadow Records, 1/2 of Metalheadz (with Goldie) & Remixer / studio-whiz behind countless drum and bass tunes. Rob spent 2 weeks on vacation here in Orlando and we were lucky enough have a chat with the man....
JUNGLIZED: First off, give us an update on what Moving Shadow's been up to and where it's going....
ROB PLAYFORD: So far this year we've been concentrating on promoting the albums we've had out and we've been recruiting people from around the UK to compile "regional-based" albums...the first one of those was done by DJ Pulse and features Alex Reese and Wax Doctor, etc.–all artists from the Center of England. The second was compiled by EZ Rollerz and featured PFM & Flytronix, etc.–mostly East of England artists. The next one will be compiled by James from Essence of Aura which will feature Northeast England artists...the DAT's should be coming thru very shortly. Simon from 2 Bad Mice is busy compiling an albumwith tunes from around Hartfortshire, where Moving Shadow started...that one will have Cloud 9, Blame, Omni Trio, Foul Play & myself if I've got time to do the track.
JUNGLIZED: Speaking of time...that's obviously something you don't have too much of lately. What other projects are keeping you busy?
ROB PLAYFORD: Yeah, time hasn't been very kind to me lately. I've just finished another Metalheadz album with Goldie, which we started around last spring. Mostly we've been tied up with touring since we've been out supporting Bjork all around Europe & the States. Then came back to England and embarked on our own tour of the UK. Now Summer's come around again, and it's time to do all the festivals & stuff. But we've been touring for pretty much a year straight. With what little time we have had in the studio, we've just been doing some remixes, which is pretty nice tho.
JUNGLIZED: Who are some of the artists you've done remixes for recently?
ROB PLAYFORD: The last one we did was for Black Grape (ex-Happy Mondays band) which has come out very hard & sounds wicked. Also we did one for U2, which will be released in the States as the B-side to their next single from the film, Mission Impossible!
JUNGLIZED: Back to Moving Shadow, what new artists have you signed recently & what's gonna be released this summer?
ROB PLAYFORD: We've got quite a few new artists really, I mean, we've gotten so much good stuff sent to us by friends of people who say, "Hey look, I've got a track, do you wanna put it out?" And it's like, oh my god, the tracks are just so good these days! It used to be a case of we'd get so much stuff given to us & it would be basically just crap. People just wanted to do it, but there is so many talented people out there now. It's nice that they realize that Moving Shadow is one of the originals and obviously we're still here. You only have to look around to see the people in the scene that can still be trusted, cause they're still about and selling plenty of records & showing their faces everywhere! The one's you couldn't trust have disappeared.
Alot of the artists that were already on the label have started to do solo projects...like Flytronix, he was part of Hyper on Experience & Dave Wallace was part of Aquasky. Everyone's got alot of tracks that they're just trying to get out. Then we've got collaborations as well...J&J and Flytronix are working together. Also Blame and Deep Blue are doing some stuff. That will all be part of a series that we're running this year called "The Class of '96" that's similar to our "2 in 1" series a few years back, except there really won't be any concept behind it, we just really want to get the tune out! Maybe we won't be able to sign them for whatever reason, but we can still get a good tune out from people we respect. The next full artist album will be from EZ Rollerz, which is just gorgeous...everyone who's heard it is just buggin' on it–really quality stuff.
JUNGLIZED: It seems it's finally getting to the point where full albums are quality projects –not just a few new tracks & a load of old ones.
ROB PLAYFORD: Yeah, it got really stupid. We started the ball rolling with the Omni Trio album which was the first proper one. I mean, there were a few before that, but nobody was really serious, it was more like a
Page 7
Interview
ROB PLAYFORD CONTINUED...
collection of singles, really.
Moving Shadow doesn't necessarily have to release jungle either. I mean, we're not forceable trying to, but we're known as a jungle lable–we were there at the start & you can't really get away from that & we wouldn't want to either. But at the moment, we've got so much different stuff coming out. Some half-speed stuff is coming & we're just pushing the boundries really.
JUNGLIZED: With the quality of the smooth/jazzy style of tunes, you can certainly expect more people to get interested in the music...
ROB PLAYFORD: There's a hell of alot of people interested! I mean, sales wise, the smooth style is probably neck & neck, if not outselling, the jump-up style. The difference is that it isn't just people that go out that are buying the smooth stuff. It's all sorts of people. You can now listen to it at home...there's albums around where you can just sit around home chiling out, or driving or whatever you're doing. Unless you're really into it, that's not the case with the jump-up stuff. Alot of people who are into other styles of music are starting to collect the tunes now.
JUNGLIZED: What do you think about the USA coming around to the drum & bass?
ROB PLAYFORD: They have! The music has come around 2 or 3 times. I've been coming over for 4 years now & I've seen jungle music go up and down 2 or 3 times now and each time it's getting better. They've definitely got good reason to be on it now with the soulful, jazzy, funky stuff being so easy to listen to. It's so similar to the housey & garagey sounds that the US has been used to for years that maybe they'll finally find out what drum & bass is all about. It's kinda like saying the new smooth stuff is more mature–but that's really the wrong word to use...cause the other stuff is immature and that ain't so. It's the same problem with saying a style of music is "intelligent", you know? You can't use these words but if you know about the music, you know how to take them.
JUNGLIZED: Have record sales improved on export to the USA?
ROB PLAYFORD: Very slightly. I don't know if it's down to a distribution thing or what. This year we have gotten alot more feedback from the states, you know, people calling up and saying they can't find the records & such. We pass those messages onto the exporters & they tell us to just give 'em these phone numbers & we'll tell them where the nearest store is. People seem to be eager & it's nice to get feedback from the street level.
JUNGLIZED: What's next for the UK jungle/drum & bass scene in your eyes? (or ears, actually.)
ROB PLAYFORD: It'll definitly get better & better as it always has done since we started doing it. I mean, we've been doing it for the whole of this decade and nothing's really changed, except we've gotten bigger and the scene has gotten bigger and regardless whether the press wants to write about us or so & so got a track signed to a major label, the scene has always carried on. Style-wise,
I've been coming over for 4 years now & I've seen jungle music go up and down 2 or 3 times now and each time it's getting better. They've definitely got good reason to be on it now with the soulful, jazzy, funky stuff being so easy to listen to.
it's always difficult to project past 6 months or so as to where the sound is going. You just don't know what is gonna come up and influence it next. I would never have guessed 2 or 3 years ago, in the middle of all the ragga stuff when I was jumpin up and down at the Paradise club that it would be all chilled out & jazzy in 2 years time! One thing I have noticed looking back on it is that it seems to swing from one end to the other and if it goes hard, it'll go nice & if it goes nice, it'll go hard. It's the same with fashion as well, that moves on a slower pace. But when fashion is scruffy looking all over then 5 years later it will be all designer labels and smart looking. Anyone can look back over any youth culture and see the same things. I still haven't grown up yet anyway, so I'm gonna be doing this for quite some time!
JUNGLIZED: Alot of the main UK radio shows have added drum & bass to their line-up....
ROB PLAYFORD: Yeah, I don't know if that's the kiss of death or what, but Radio One, the international radio station have now got a weekly jungle show. I've heard the first few ones & I haven't been overly impressed...but they're having a go at least and it's getting the music out to the rest of the country...cause jungle really is a London thing and it all ripples out from London and eventually the rest of the country gets it. But with this kind of coverage, it'll speed things up quite alot. And KISS-FM in London unfortunately pioneered the "proper" broadcasting of it. But there's been pirate stations that have been around since the scene started that have really carried it thru.
JUNGLIZED: Moving Shadow's been getting fancy with the merchandising! Tell us about it...
ROB PLAYFORD: This is another little line of promotion that other people weren't doing the way we thought it should be done, which goes right back to why I started the label in the first place. With the clothing, um, no one was really doing anything for the girls. And seeing what they were wearing in the clubs over here in the States, it's just fantastic! So we decided to get a couple of girls involved and came out with some clothing aimed directly at females and that's been going very well. We've got some nice chic, designer stuff coming for the men as well.
JUNGLIZED: 2 and a half years ago you opened the Section 5 record store with your partner Steve...how's that going...
ROB PLAYFORD: It's amazing. We've got such a great clientele! Actually we've just moved to the downstairs inside the same building. We were making too much noise upstairs, so we either had to turn it down or move downstairs. It's looking outstanding inside now! Very 90's, very chic. It goes with the style of everything at the moment. Very stunning! The upstairs store was very early 90's style, rave orientated. But it's not just ravers buying the tunes now, it's all sorts of people.
JUNGLIZED: Wanna say "Yo" to anyone??
ROB PLAYFORD: Yeah, in the office it's gotta be Caroline who's holding down the fort while I'm jetting around the world! Also Simon & Sean (the 2 Mice).

ROLLIN' WITH THE AK...
Nationwide support for drum & bass music is becoming more abundant and nowadays there are many different styles of the music...something for everyone to appreciate! For instance, in Orlando, many of the Acid Jazz crowd are getting into the deep & chilled side of Jungle. Labels like MoWax, Celluloid and the ever so huge Goldie album, Timeless, have no doubt helped paved the way for the many jungle converted & let me give a little credit where credit is due. The Goldie album has definitely changed the crass opinions of the common raver-who dislikes "jungle" music because of it's rough attitude. But I've noticed that when it comes to mentioning this massive release, the only person acknowledged is the name on the cover. Fact is, Rob Playford had a major part in what came out of Timeless. Respect is due. Rob is an absolute wizard behind the studio controls, and there's proof in every Moving Shadow record. I just wanted to give Bobby proper respect!
One of the hot spots in the US is the Wash. D.C./Baltimore area thanx to 2 Tuff crew and the major league promoters like Scott Henry & Charles of Fever, who regularly book top American jungle DJ's... and my man Lonnie Fisher of Ultraworld, who is goin' full steam ahead & doing things pure...with techno, trip-hop, jungle, hand bag, hard trance & more in multiple rooms...attitude free! It's all about the vibe!!
Musically, lots of things going on....When it comes to parties & raves...the crowd usually prefers the jump-up hard step stuff. They like the aggression that keeps 'em goin' when they're on the dancefloor. But when it comes to upscale clubs & mix-tapes, the crowd seems to go for the "progressive" stuff....I say "progressive" because that's what has happened. People are going crazy with terms like "intelligent", "ambient", etc...But at the end of the day, it's just a progression of breakbeat music, hence the name "progressive breakbeat"! Many labels like: Good-Looking, Basement, Creative Wax, Precious Materials, etc...are providing high-quality tunes that are acceptable to even the house & trance crowds. Now that Florida's clubs are starting to get proper doses of this music...it's just a matter of time before all forms of drum & bass music will be welcomed!
Until next time, stay real! Quick shouts to Danny Breaks & Chris. Booking Info on AK1200: 407.260.2623.

ASH, SS & Warren G. GET WICKED IN TEXAS
Ash with Warren G. on the mic
(MC) SS tearin' it up!
The Lord Vishnu on the decks
DJ Ash gets the floor rollin'
Warren G. works the crowd in his D&G shirt (nice!)
Houston, TX has long been a hotbed for jungle activity and it got particularly scorching when KOOL-FM's DJ Ash, Formation Records' DJ SS, and MC Warren G. came across the Atlantic for "Enchanted Kingdom" at the x-tra huge Astro Arena (near the Astrodome)! The party was sponsored by Hocus Pocus Productions along with the Purrin' Line Crew (who lined-up the jungle room). Of course, you'd expect tearing sets from SS & Ash...and no one was disappointed! Warren G. kept the vibe alive with his MCing and believe it or not, so did SS, who was very impressive on the mic! Houston DJ's: DVS-1, Lord Vishnu, Price, Audio 3 and The Roll DJ alongside Phantom 45 from Chicago rounded out the night.
Just one month before "Enchanted Kingdom", Ash & Rude Boy Monty tore-up an all jungle party called "Back to Bass-X" at the Heights Boxing Center! Over 700 kids brocked-out "Jungle Soundclash" style as they danced between 2 boxing rings! Locals: DVS-1, Lord Vishnu, Price, Audio 3, the Roll DJ, and Zacchaeus finished off the night!
What's coming up next for Houston? The Purrin' Line Crew will be throwing the FORCE-FM (Houston's only jungle radio show!) Birthday Bash Number 1 in mid-August with Marvellous Cain, Rude Boy Monty, DJ Ash, Sponge & Bigga! For more info call 713.709.3681..

PASCAL "Reality" (Frontline)
Usual top form on this one...cookin' Monty beats and bass stabs roll with lots of electro sound effects and vocal loops echoing off eachother. Easy to mix intro as well. Ruff!
DJ LIBRA "Block-Rockin Beats" (Runninz)
This is a straight-up, straight-out jungle tune! Cookin' beats lead up to the catchy "Block-ock-ock, Rock-ock, in-in, Beats, Beats, Beats" sample which breaks down oh so wildly! Cut, chopped & clipped breaks follow until the harder, straighter beats & a descending bassline take over. A smokin' roller!
SLIPSTREAM "Interference" (Urban Culture)
Sister label to Urban Gorilla...the A side is a happy roller with mesmerizing string sweeps and a deep, upright bass riff. "The Abyss" on the flip stays on the hard, soft tip but includes a sweet sax..
"Bad Bwoy DJ" (Third Eye)
Bad Boy indeed! Full rap vocal works well in this low-end workout that gets cookin' when it has to and drops out nicely when it should. Definitely the underground sound.
BLAME "#90" (Moving Shadow)
Blame's follow up to the highly acclaimed "Planet Neptune" that has been roaring the sets of almost every American Jungle DJ. This release is on a whole new tip...real chilly with sparse beats and plunky basslines....almost a garage/deep house feel. Check it out!
SHOCK C. "Bad Man Squad" (Headless)
The A-side is "Rollin' & Controllin'" which starts smooth and ends up in a heavy amen vs. bassline war. But it's the "Bad Man Squad" B-side that wins the award it's wobbly, up & down bassline and steady beat rhythm. For the serious bad bwoys only!
SOURCE DIRECT "X-Files Pt. 2" (Basement)
The Dynamic Duo keep it going with another cooker! Both sides are in the same vein...deep, dark, and heavy.
L DOUBLE "Slow Down" (Flex)
This one's supposed to be released as a picture disk. The L Double has been on fire lately and this 3 tracker feeds the flames! Funky bongos and ragga "rinse out some dub" vocals start off the smooth intro that kicks into a wicked, catchy bassline that rolls in various keys! Nice to see ragga vocals used in a smart way...smokin'! The hip-hop oriented B-side tracks are almost as good! When are we going to hear a "Weight 4 the Bass" jungle mix?
POTENTIAL BAD BOY "Drive By—Remix" (Third Eye)
Much more in a '96 style than the original, which sounded like just amen placed over a Public Enemy song. "Talkin' that Gangsta Shit" is a vocal from the Muse Sick LP that flows in & out of a deep bass and hard-ass drums.
DJ BRAIN "#029" (Brain)
If you're into smashed amen, ruff, ruff, ruff, style-this ones for you! Bizzy B. keepin' the bad bwoy alive with this deep bassline workout with unreal drum programming. Stretched vocal samples breaks it all up!
Technical itch "??" (Moving Shadow)
I have no idea what the names are, but it doesn't matter, both sides are mad dope. One side is a hardish, deep & dark sound. The other is sweet and sensual with female vocals and a rolling drum & bass program.
STILL ON DUBPLATE...
DJ HYPE "Can't Handle The Streets" (Frontline)
Another classic from the king! Nice & different sounding intro with techno-sounding clap beats and as a matter of fact 'street talking'. Killer vibe throughout with lots of sounds to keep you interested and lots of beats to keep you dancin'.
SHY FX "The Wolf" (Ebony)
The howling coyote sample makes this track instantly distinguishable...but check the rhythm that goes from amen over solid beats to high, pitter-patter sounds to Hendrix-heavy drums. Spacy keyboards in the background give it a chilling sound.
RUNNINZ CRU "Skankinz" (Runninz)
Bouncy roller from Marvellous Cain! Starts with a piano intro and drops into a cut up siren sound and an offsetting bassline with Apache beats. The bassline changes up, then straight beats arrive, along with the "Bring It Back" sample..should be on test press soon!

Reviews
MIND 21
"Mindz" (Urban Gorilla)
New signing from Manchester! 2 mixes...one is amen hard, one chill...both rollin' with excellent strings and the sax from Urban Culture's first release (Rogue Unit). Urban Gorilla continues to rise above the rest and this one's no exception.
POTENTIAL BAD BOY/PUBLIC ENEMY
"Drive By Remix" (Third Eye)
Way better mix than the original "Drive By" of last year. Less upfront vocal samples this time, but the trade off is a much needed groovier rhythm...this makes Chuck D.'s vocals fit much more in a jungle mode. Lotsa low end.
APHRODITE
"Style/Spice" (white)
Oh my god..this man knows how to make a tune of any style, and make it appealing! Both sides wicked.
Shimon & Andy C.
"Quest" (RAM)
Mr. Wizard teams up with Shimon of "Predator" fame for this futuristic, dark, experimental record. Absolute mayhem on both sides from start to finish.
DJ KANE
"Set" (Congo Natty)
Nice to see Rebel MC's crew back & stylin'....this remix kicks nicely with it's razor sharp beats, soaring bassline and catchy chanting. "Deep in the jungle" rhythms built on an eerie, irie tip...a complete change from the earlier "Junglist" classic, but every bit as good! Keep it coming.
Subject to Reason
"Symphonix Pt. 1 & 2" (Expressive)
Third release on this label, and they get better & better with each one! Each side is a trip in and of itself. Both are chilly-chill...but the only problem is which side to play, or better yet, get 2 copies and blend both sides together.
"Next Level" (white)
No info on this one...lots of echoey Alkaholiks samples throughout make this one a dope smoker! Stompin' bassline and straight pounding beats keep it danceable.
FINK
"You're the One" (Echo Drop)
The 3rd release on one of the UK's newest, high-quality labels responsible for late last year's "Give My Soul" (killer on the dancefloor—with its lengthy hip-hop breakdown!) by the Lab Rats. This tune's loaded with percussion and string stabs...for that live drumming sound! The flip is on the Source Direct/Photek sort of tip.
FULL LENGTH REVIEWS...
"THE DJ BOX"
Compilation (Suburban Base)
3 ruff CD's in flight case packaging! This one's got oldies/classics/hard to find tunes as well as V.I.P. mixes and many unreleased. "Smokin' Cans" by Dread Bass, "Hitman"-Dream Team Remix, "Summer Sumpting" by Rude Boy Monty, and Dropping Science Vol. 1-Harmony Remix, etc...gives you idea of the song selection-definitely jump-up! One BIG collection.
"TECHSTEPPIN"
Compilation (Emotif)
This 2 LP/double CD stays true to the SOUR offshoot label's sound with semi-experimental roller tunes full of sound effects and dark basslines. Grooverider, Chronic, Doc Scott & Ed Rush all have exclusive tracks here as well as 2 from Skyscraper and two more. If darkness is your game...
"Hype Time" (white)
Moody keys intro this one until the smoked-out break...then all hell breaks loose. Strong steady rhythm mixes with a heavy bassline a thousand breakbeat cuts that roll around the "Because its Hype Time" hip-hop sample.
SAIGON
"5 Miles High" (No U-Turn)
Entrancing tune that builds with a dreamy bassline and chiming guitars??!! Yeah, that's right, guitars! Smooth & rolling distant drumbeat let the music come forth! Nice track!
DJ DIE
"Play It For Me" (V Recordings)
Wicked, wobbling, speaker-blowing bassline meets the strong & hard amen-heavy drums that V is known for. Killer tune!
PAUL Z.
"Yeah" (Prophecy Recordings)
"Somebody in the housesay check this out!"...goes the sample! Top notch production on both sides of Prophecy's second outing. Mixed beats & a solid basslines keep it jump up with some nice strings arriving toward the end. Nice one.
REALM OF MANIC
"It Keeps Me Burning" (white)
Long intro starts it off with the soul-smooth "...got 5 on it" grooving its way toward "Keeps me burning" and "You can depend on me" female house-ish samples! Slow bassline and minimal drumming make up the rhythm and back we go to the "got 5 on it" line...worth it for that sample alone.

Both DJ's AK1200 and Jeffee have been jetting around recently playing raves & clubs across the country. AK's just spun 9 tunes at Lotus in Los Angeles,April 27th, with Rob Playford ...until the cops busted the show! Jeffee didn't fare much better, with his April 27th show, "Higher Conciousness" in Chicago shutting down after he laid only 5 tracks!
"Maximum Sound" at the Barbarella Nite Club has been postponed while the club remodels & renames and Jeffee gets this issue of Junglized done! STATESIDE
WASHINGTON D.C.
The D.C./Baltimore area has quickly become the Capitol of Jungle thanks to the hard work of 2 Tuff productions and the promoters & DJ's who know...
Ultraworld threw "Eclipse" on April 27th which featured Kemistry & Storm, who absolutely had a wicked set! They should be back later this summer. On May 11, Return of the Renegades took place...sponsored by the 2-Tuff crew & DeeJay Recordings. This one featured the one & only LTJ Bukem alongside AK1200 (Orlando), Slant (2-Tuff), Karl K., Method One, and a special appearance by DJ Trace (U.K.) along with MC Conrad and MC Dub 2. Unfortunately, the party got busted and had to be moved from D.C. to Baltimore! Most everyone made the 45 minute journey & Bukem still played an amazing set!
Starting June 10, the Eliptic crew is presenting D.C.'s first weekly jungle party called "Where The Wild Things Are"! This will happen every Monday night with resident, Slant, and special guests! Call the 2-Tuff info line for location: 202.736.1714.
BassRush 3's jungle room was the most incredible vibe...So watch for BassRush 4 from the Fusion crew on August 31 with a jungle line-up featuring DJ SS from Formation Records (U.K.) alongside DJ Trace (U.K.), Jeffee (Junglized, Orlando), Karl K. (2-Tuff), Entity, Method One (D.C.), DieselBoy & 187 (Pittsburgh), and KNC from Scotland! Of course a house & techno room will be featured also...for info call the Fusion line: 410.788.5543.

Chi-town's jungle king, Phantom 45's been getting around as usual, playing recently in Houston, TX; Dayton, OH and Fever in Baltimore! Look for the Phantom, DJ Shawn, Danny the Wildchild & other local junglists on May 24-27 at an enormous outdoor event called Even Further, featuring all types of musics on a major campground site somewhere between Chicago & Minneapolis! Following "Higher Conciousness", Sub Zero's Inkline Productions will be hosting their second show on July 20th. This will be an outdoor event with rappers the Alkaholiks with local hip-hop DJ's alongside jungle DJ, Jeffee (Junglized, Orlando)! Call the Inkline info line: 312.509.8588. This one from the Shining Star crew will be "Tearin'" (literally) with Krome & Time from the U.K., Chicago's Phantom 45 & Shawn, Jeffee (Orlando) and many more yet to be named, since the show's still coming together in the early stages. Interview
LABEL PROFILE
SUBURBAN BASE RECORDS
SUB BASE USA
If you're used to getting any mailouts from Moonshine Records in Los Angeles, you're probably familiar with MATEO. He promoted most of Moonshine's dance releases as well as promoting the SUB BASE USA releases, part-time, on the side. Now, he's heading-up SUB BASE USA full-time as a separate division in a separate office space! We asked MATEO what he & Dan Donnelly (Sub Base UK Chief) have planned for an attack on the US jungle market....
JUNGLIZED: So we've heard Suburban Base has it's own office in L.A. now...is Sub Base USA getting a little more serious?
MATEO: Yes! What we want to do not just put out records that have already appeared on import and instead put out music aimed directly at America. Most of the jungle population is so committed to the music that they already buy the imports and giving them the "Drum & Bass" series, 4 months after the UK release was condescending to the fans and by then the tunes were already old.
JUNGLIZED: Is America gonna get it's own CD's, not released in the UK, then?
MATEO: On July 15, the actual debut SUB BASE USA CD will be a full length album by D'Cruze called "Cruzin"! That's not the previous album which was released in the UK last year, but a brand new album that includes 2 of the tracks from that previous album, but they are completely re-done! None of the other tracks have appeared anywhere before. We've even got Rolling Stone Magazine to a story on D'Cruze! Then we've got a ragga/hip-hop album lined-up for August.
JUNGLIZED: Really, a ragga/hip-hop album!!? With UK or US artists?
MATEO: Primarily British artists, I believe. One thing you'll notice too, is that we've got our own artists under the US wing. You'll notice a different style on the covers now, more of a style that US kids would buy. I don't want to use the word sophisticated, but it's aimed at a slightly more mature buyers...you'll like it!
JUNGLIZED: Any other releases planned, how 'bout the American jungle artist's compilation?
MATEO: We're gonna have one release per month planned, but our release schedule for September is open. We kinda want to see how the D'Cruze album goes...if it or the ragga hip-hop do well we may do something along either of those lines. Maybe even a Miami Bass album. Our much-anticipated US Jungle compilation is definitely scheduled for October 15th and will feature the top jungle music makers from America. ★

UK JUNGLE 'ZINE REPORT
Need absolute up-to-the-minute Jungle music info? Want to find out what records are worth buying before they come out over here? Why not get a subscription to a U.K. Jungle magazine?? Each issue of JUNGLIZED will feature a popular U.K. Jungle/rave magazine so you can keep up each month with the rapid pace of the Jungle world.....
ATMOSPHERE is one of the longest running jungle mags in the business. Before starting the magazine way back in December '92, Jay (DJ Frenzic) was DJing and looking for a way to get contacts in the scene...so he put together a little mag that covered all types of rave music. As jungle music evolved into the rave music of choice, ATOMOSPHERE evolved too!
"It started as a 12-pager on black & white shitty paper & crap design," Jay recalls, "the music back then wasn't really split up back then, it was all rave music:"
Today, ATMOSPHERE comes with expert graphics & a glossy 64 pages chock full of Jungle show reviews, DJ interviews, upfront record reviews, and advertisements for lables, parties, & record stores.
"Since I've been doing it, I've gotten a bit of respect in the scene," says Jay, "I feel really good if Randall or someone gives me props for the magazine, I feel like I'm doing some good...cause I'm aiming the magazine directly at the people in the scene & I'm in this scene as much as everyone else."

KNOWLEDGE is a relative newcomer to the jungle magazine world, ranking up there with the best of 'em . Having only existed for just over a year now, the "Ledge" crew (Colin Steven, Rachel Patey, DJ Dazee, etc...) from Bristol have put together a colorful 'zine, full of jungle info, interviews and all that goes with it. Happy Hardcore bits are included in this KNOWLEDGE, which, according to Rachel, is alot bigger in Bristol than jungle! Also, you get upfront jungle record reviews from Ruffneck 'Ting DJ, Dazee and even reviews of sampling CD's (for all you AKAI afficionados!).
"We live & breathe jungle and we all live together in the same house and Colin is a writer by trade," explains Rachel, "so it seemed natural that we'd start writing about it."
The "Ledge" crew also keep busy running their own night at the Lakota club in Bristol with all the big name DJ's guesting.
"I love getting letters," Rachel admits, "you know when you get a fax outta the blue that says 'wicked, love the magazine, thanks for doing it', that makes it all worthwhile!"
