Interview
An Interview With... DAN DONNELLY FOUNDER of SUBURBAN BASE RECORDS
Dan's Record Store, Boogie Times, in Romford, England Started Releasing Its Own White Labels at the Turn of the Decade...Soon After, SUBURBAN BASE RECORDS Was Born, Leading the U.K. Breakbeat/Jungle Sound Since Day One. In 1995, SUB BASE is Still One of The Most Successful Underground Dance Labels in England.
JUNGLIZED: First thing....How many releases has SUBURBAN BASE up til this date?
DAN DONNELLY: We're currently promoing SUB BASE 60, but we've got scheduled releases practically 'til the end of the year. We'll be up to 73 within the next couple of months.
JUNGLIZED: That's alot!
DAN DONNELLY: Yeah, and that's just on SUBURBAN BASE! You've got to remember that we've run white labels, had pseudonym labels, we've got BREAKDOWN, which is our compilation album company.
JUNGLIZED: Speaking of labels, what's up with SUBURBAN BASE USA?
DAN DONNELLY: SUB BASE USA is set up with our own company running out there. So we're gonna be suporting jungle ourselves and we've struck up a distribution deal with Moonshine Records in California, who are very experienced at doing breakbeat...they were a logical choice. So far we've released two DRUM & BASS compilation albums, the FACE of the FUTURE album, and soon the TELEPATHY compilation will be out to coincide with the big jungle party we're doing in Orlando, Florida. We are in charge of what gets released and we're thinking about doing an album to showcase the US junglists.
We're trying to do something to support jungle over in the US. It's not a money making thing to us, we're not taking advantage of the music or anything. We've been doing it over here for longer than anyone, so we want to do it over there for all the right reasons...although there will probably be loads of labels coming over after SUBURBAN BASE USA takes off.
JUNGLIZED: What's the story behind the SUB BASE jungle party, in Orlando? (See Florida Jungle Report) Why Florida?
DAN DONNELLY: We wanted to kick off SUB BASE USA with a party over on the East coast of America. The East coast, Florida boys have really supported SUB BASE since way back in the rave days and we wanted to give back, sort of, with a big jungle party to kick it off! We're not making a whole heap of money, in fact, we're spending alot of money to get the music out there. But the point is, we've got to make sure we control over jungle music and no major label is telling us what we can and cannot do.
JUNGLIZED: What about the major labels that are capitalizing on the success of jungle?
DAN DONNELLY: That's happening alot over here in the U.K. I think in the US, no one's managed to get in front of us on that, you know? If jungle does take off in a big way in the US there will be majors flooding the market...but it's just down to the DJ's to like, know what's real and who isn't. That's always gonna happen with anything original...you get imitators.
We could have signed easily with the majors in the US, but we'll take the risk...put some money into it & there might be a day when it comes back for us. But that's not the idea behind it...we just want to spread this music far and wide.
JUNGLIZED: Alot of jungle artists are producing their own albums now...is this the next step?
DAN DONNELLY: We are starting to work on artist's full length albums. In dance music though, full length albums, other than compilation albums, are notoriously hard to market...it's generally a singles market 'cause the people who are buying the records are DJ's or wanna be DJ's. We'll be doing mini-albums to kinda test the waters...maybe 8 tracks on two

DAN DONNELLY CONTINUED
pieces of vinyl at a special price, so it can be played out like a single to make it much more DJ friendly. We've got a D'cruze album on the way with excellent production, a kind of forward thinking LP. Also, a MARVELLOUS CAIN album will be out shortly, which is like full-on hitting it and has a lot of collaboration with the reggae artists such as CUTTY RANKS, PLIERS & DADDY FREDDY ! It'll probably be released in the States on SUB BASE USA.
We're waiting for a JOHNNY JUNGLE album & hopefully DJ HYPE will get an album done but it probably won't be done 'til next year. He's a very busy DJ right now. Oh, and also a DROPPIN' SCIENCE LP.
JUNGLIZED: How do you guys go about hooking-up with such a major dancehall artist like CUTTY RANKS?
DAN DONNELLY: It started when MARVELLOUS CAIN sampled one of Cutty's tunes, "Limb By Limb", then made a track called the "Hitman" which was totally huge! We cleared the sample with a company called Fashion which is like the main reggae label in the UK, and we just got along really well with them so they kinda just hooked us up with Cutty. So for the single, a joint venture between Fashion & SUB BASE, we've gotten DJ SS to come and remix the original "Limb By Limb" with full-on CUTTY RANKS single coming out with a video, CD single..the works! Cutty's really into it as well, cause one of the guys from Fashion was in Jamaica and said Cutty has heard Marvellous Cains mixes and he's even voiced some intros for Cain's dubplates and that. So he's down with what we're doing...it's a good project for all involved.
JUNGLIZED: Dancehall artists are still sampled constantly...they should be getting proper recognition, right?
DAN DONNELLY: SUB BASE gets along really well with all the reggae labels because we clear our samples. They like us so they'll clear samples for us with no problems and we appreciate that. We just signed the rights for Fashion merchandise as well, so we are quite involved with working with the people from the reggae scene.
Alot of labels haven't been as forthcoming with clearing samples and paying the artist their dues, so I can understand the grievances that reggae artists may have. But they know we are legit...I mean the publishing rights get paid, we sort it all out. We work hard to make friends in the scene and that's why we get things done.
JUNGLIZED: Since Jungle music has roots in reggae music, hip-hop music and house as well, what do you expect from the American kids? Who do you see latching on to it first, ragga crowds, raver crowds?
DAN DONNELLY: It's a completely different culture in the states. Over here the raggas, ravers & hip-hop are totally integrated. There's really no problem with who's gonna be attending what rave...like white kids at a dancehall rave or black kids at a techno rave. It seems a bit more fragmented at the moment in the USA. I'd love for this music to bring people together... but it's gotta come up from the street level. That's where it came from in the UK..sort of ghetto bass. The rave scene in the US has been kind of misunderstood, sort of like a college kid techno thing...the original UK raves really weren't about that.
JUNGLIZED: Early in the US rave scene, the breakbeat thing was huge and then it just broke down, where 90% of America bailed off the breakbeats...now that Jungle music has reinvented itself as a new music in the US, what are your thoughts on people and DJ's jumping back on the bandwagon?
DAN DONNELLY: What we've got now is a totally new set of people getting into jungle..you're getting hip-hop kids, dancehall kids and they weren't the people from the first time 'round. I mean these kids weren't there to get jungle from a rave point of view...those kids have jumped onto trance & progressive house and they're gonna jump back onto jungle 'cause it's trendy. Fuck 'em. They're into whatever's the flavor of the month. Obviously jungle ain't no flavor of the month...we're here livin' it everyday and have been livin it for a long time. I think the hip-hop and dancehall kids are more true to the music and that's where I think that's where it will come from in the US.
JUNGLIZED: Clear up the saying that "Jungle music is getting too commercial in England." You can see a video in the UK for Prizna's "Fire", yet that's still not a compromising, commercial tune. Like hip-hop, Jungle's found commerciality while staying true, right?
DAN DONNELLY: The point is, the scene isn't any more commercial than it was two years ago when it wasn't getting much press coverage at all and we were selling like 10,000 units of a single. Today we can sell lots more 'cause the singles are getting into the charts. In the UK the charts are compiled by records selling through highly commercial stores, not the specialty shops that we only sold through two years ago. So of course, a records gonna sell better through a chain store & you may only sell the same amount of records, but the records are getting into the charts where the press notices and you've got a sort of false commerciality. Getting jungle into the magazines, TV and radio...does that really make it commercial? It's just now they're interested in the same music we've been making for years. There are people making tracks aimed specifically for a pop market, but the majority of jungle artists don't want to be pop stars. Jungle, as well as techno is pretty faceless, except for the occasional MC or whatever, but what the fuck is wrong with that? That's what the major labels use to market for product. When you're a producer and you've got your own self contained scene, you can do whatever the fuck you want.
JUNGLIZED: You guys recently moved your offices away from the Boogie Times record store?
DAN DONNELLY: Yeah, the idea was to move not too far away from the shop, so we are just down the street now. I mean it was really nice with the label being right above the shop to keep in touch and everything was connected. But we've needed this move for a while. We found a good shop just a few doors down, where we kept the same phone lines, etc..we've got more space around us now. It's a really creative feeling here now. You've got someone working on artwork in one room, someone laying down tracks in another and someone doing the books for the year in another room..all aspects of the business getting taken care of under one roof. Our old office we've managed to convert into a clothing store!
JUNGLIZED: Who else, besides you, keeps the SUB BASE offices busy?
Page 5
Interview
DAN DONNELLY: The main priority at the moment is the export office, run by Vicki. We're exporting only for SUB BASE and related labels at the moment such as Breakdown & Fruit Tree. Some of our artists labels are getting exported through us as well like Dropping Science, Frontline, I.Q., and RAM. Danny Breaks (Droppin' Science) ran our record store for three years with Winston (Run Tings). Now he has a new title, "Label Manager"...that means Danny's handling more of the licensing and working with the compilation albums & doing A&R, looking after artwork. Also you've got Alex, a journalist working with DJ Magazine, handling our press releases, etc. David is our accountant, Emma looks after the administration & paperwork. We are more organized than other labels which helps us look after some of the smaller labels that we export & handle the publishing for, etc...everything runs really smoothly.
JUNGLIZED: Where else, besides the USA are you trying to spread the Jungle Vibe?
DAN DONNELLY: We just did a whole label deal for Brazil! I went down there recently and met up with guys down there & it was amazing to find out that the DJ's down there knew all about the labels & they've got SUB BASE tracks in their charts and stuff, I was amazed. They asked me what we were doing about covering other territories in South America such as Argentina, Mexico, Chile, and we're currently negotiating a deal to cover the whole of South America. We just set five separate album deals with Japan with various companies, majors to big dance record labels.
JUNGLIZED: Where else, besides the USA are you trying to spread the Jungle Vibe?
DAN DONNELLY: We just did a whole label deal for Brazil! We just set five separate album deals with Japan with various companies, majors to big dance record labels.
JUNGLIZED: So what was once just white labels through your Boogie Times record store..has now turned into a worldwide project?
DAN DONNELLY: We're just gonna keep doing it as long as people want it and as long as we want to do it! I mean we wouldn't still be in this if we didn't believe in what we were doing. We know what a nice vibe we've got here in London and we just want to spread it to all corners of the world. I think jungle in America could be a really positive thing, bringing unity into the dance scene. That's noticeably lacking.
JUNGLIZED: Any shouts to anyone?
DAN DONNELLY: Just a shout to all the American Junglists, man. That's it. No shouting to anyone in the UK, you just get in trouble for forgeting people.

JUNE 24,1995 ILFORD, UK TELEPATHY PHOTOS+TEXT by AK 1200
June 24, 1995 I found myself at the Island in Ilford, just outside of Romford (Sub Base headquarters) for the huge Telepathy record release party. I'll tell ya now, if you're in London and you don't check a Telepathy party, then you haven't gotten a proper dose of UK Jungle. First of all, let me clear any rumors that have or ever will surface about this organization. This is not a dark moody operation. It may not be a white-glove committee, but it certainly is not a place where people prefer to be violent with each other, unless of course you're walking around like a scared little puppy dog just asking to be confronted. The majority of the Telepathy crowd is black, but unless you have some sort of phobia about a darker shade of human skin, that shouldn't be an issue. The music for the most part stays on the jump-up tip, cause the Telepathy crowd has no time to stand still. Then again, with regulars like Randall, SS, Ray Keith, Andy C, Grooverider, and countless others, how could one stand still? The security is real comfortable...they're not there to ruin your night, and they show it. Sting, the main man behind Telepathy makes sure everyone enjoys themselves, and if there is a fight, it's quickly broken up and the people involved are out on their ASS! So, like I said, you gotta check Telepathy to know what Jungle's about! Back to the story--Saturday, the 24th of June was the release party. On the bill was Flirt, Devious D, SL & DJ Ron, Grooverider, Andy C, DJ Rap, DJ SS, Randall, and Brockle alongside MC's Hyper D, GQ, Shabba, Det, and Five-O. The whole fucking place was on fire!! I don't want to get into each DJ's set because they were all equally impressive and I don't want to be subjected to rating people, but I will say that when Det was droppin' quick lyrics to SS's set, the crowd was absolutely manic!! He (SS) had everyone in the palm of his hand. The whole night was wicked with the pure jungle vibe!! Big up the Sting for the VIP treatment!! The rest of my trip was just pure chillout and relaxation in the midst of summertime. Big thanks to Dan D. for everything, and to Hype for cutting that plate for me, and to Danny Breaks for helping me with the tune, and to Alex C., for just being so cooool. See ya'll real soon! By the way, be sure to get your hands of the Telepathy album. If you can't find it, call Moonshine Music at 310.652.8145 and ask for it by name. Also check out the rest of the Drum and Bass series on a mixed version CD by DJ Hype.

CONQUERING LION X-PROJECT
LABEL PROFILE: Searching for truly excellent Ragga-Jungle records is an absolute nerve-racking & expensive process. Weeding out the half-assed, poorly sampled tunes, hoping to find the quality tracks that "sound as good as an X-Project record!" The X-PROJECT label was formed last year & as a result of their licensing deal with ISLAND/MANGO Records, their rudeboy jungle sound will reach a worldwide audience, promoting the more cultural aspects of the dancehall scene. Best known X-PROJECT artist, Conquering Lion, is actually Rebel MC working within the jungle area developing Underground Dancehall music with influences from the 70's Roots scene. The huge success of last year's "Code Red" (featuring the sing-along vocals of dancehall man, Super Cat) pushed ragga-jungle to the top of the jump-up sound! The latest Conquering Lion 12" + CD single "Rastaman" features reggae legend Beenie Man over a deep, "roots"-styled Jungle rhythm. A true Underground Dancehall masterpiece.

Interview
DANNY BREAKS
Danny Breaks is the 22 year-old B-boy from the Southend of England who has been consistently putting out top notch tracks since November of 1991, as Sonz of a Loop da Loop Era. Since then, he's done numerous projects with Suburban Base Records and is currently their label manager. In addition, Danny's started his own record label, Droppin' Science. Also, he's been a frequent guest to us in Orlando, so, we thought we'd better get an interview out of him- So here it goes......
JUNGLIZED: How are things going with Droppin' Science?
DANNY BREAKS: Yeah! Pretty cool--things are starting to come together nicely. It's all gradually heading in the direction I want it to go.
JUNGLIZED: What direction is that?
DANNY BREAKS: It's becoming a cool little low-key label. Sort of on the tip for people who are down, and want to check out some beat science on the level, ya know.
JUNGLIZED: Beat Science? Is that the formula behind your particular sound?
DANNY BREAKS: Beats is what it's all about, man! Just trying to fuck em' up with technology. Nowadays, there's so much you can do with a drum break. You can literally base a whole tune around a mashed-up drum sound.
JUNGLIZED: Yeah.--But it's not just the breaks that give your tunes that specific sound...
DANNY BREAKS: I like to arrange a whole lot of different sounds and effects around the beats, to give it that flavor, ya know.
JUNGLIZED: Speaking of flavor, what's comin' up for the next few months?...Was the new stuff you played for me possibly be Volume 7?
DANNY BREAKS: I'm not sure, I doubt it....There's a new Safari Sounds project, which is really good and there's a Splash remix of Step off which is serious. Daz let off big time with this one.
JUNGLIZED: Anything apart from Droppin' Science goin' on?
DANNY BREAKS: I'm going to do some slow abstract stuff for Mo Wax, which is something I've wanted to do for a while now...ya know...some really bugged-out instrumental hip-hop things.
JUNGLIZED: Is that where the scratching comes in?
DANNY BREAKS: Yeah, It's been a while since I've scratched on my tracks, but I'm getting the urge to get busy again.
JUNGLIZED: Do you think scratching will become a part of the Breakbeat scene again?
DANNY BREAKS: It could run again, but it will probably be a different style..ya know...Keeping up with the times. Imean, the music is so good that you almost don't mess it up by scratching over top, unless you have a scratch that blends.
JUNGLIZED: Since you've been so busy making tracks, do you think you'll take a rest from it to concentrate more on DJ-ing?
DANNY BREAKS: Well, I am planning to strap down later in the year and start pushing that side of things, because it helps alot in making tunes if you can finish up a track, then cut a plate that weekend, and play it for a crowd to see how it drops.
JUNGLIZED: What sort of stuff has influenced you musically?
DANNY BREAKS: Well, from the start, it had to electro and hip-hop, and through scratchin' and cutting with hip-hop, I started getting into the original breakbeats they were using. That developed into checking the music itself, which was actually inside the breaks; then, the whole native tongue thing. (Tribe Called Quest, Jungle Bros., ect....) And even some hard dub stuff like the Scientist. I guess these are the things that appeal to me, so that's what goes into my music.
JUNGLIZED: Well, since you've been here so damn much--How do you see America's Jungle scene?
DANNY BREAKS: After last visit to Baltimore, I've seen a major increase in the amount of prople getting into Drum and Bass. It finally seems like you'd be able to successfully put on a Jungle allnighter,
Page 9
Interview
and get good attendance. One problem with America, though, is that it is so big, and since Jungle is something people usually specialize in, it's hard to get everyone together who's into it. Instead, you have hundreds of smaller "scenes" where in England, everything is smaller, so you have everyone together already, and you get one huge "scene". Baltimore was real good, because the people seemed the usual House/Trance crowd. But , as soon as I dropped my first record, everyone was just havin' it. They knew how to separate the House from the Jungle, but they accepted it as equally. Another problem with America is that alot of the rave crowd follows their favorite DJ around as if he was a sheepherder, and they are the flock. If the sheepherder doesn't like Jungle, then he has no need to expose it to the sheep, therefore the sheep will not like it . Onlyu because of the fact that they don't know the music. Because all in all, if people were exposed to Jungle on a regular basis, they would get used to it's pace and sound, and maybe even prefer to hear it.
Danny Breaks at the Edge in Orlando, circa 1993
At the end of the day, variety is the spice of life.
JUNGLIZED: Preach on brother!!...Any shouts or final thoughts you'd like to give?
DANNY BREAKS: I'll give a shout to Maria, Safari Sounds crew, Sub Base crew, AK and Tonya alongside Kene B for their hospitality as always, Jeffee, Leslee, ICEE, Josh Swissman, Rude Boy, JJ-Jellybean, Snuggles, Scott at Dub Shack, the rest of the CHA crew, my man Andy from 2 TUFF alongside Slant, & a special big up to Lonnie of Ultraworld for steppin' up and taking chances, and representing what a true promoter should be like to work with. Shout to George, and U-Buzzin' crew. Also to Roni Size and Krust, James Lavelle of Mo Wax, Juice crew, Swift & Zinc, Movin' Shadow crew, Ant and Andy C, Alex C., big shout to L Double & every one else who is down with the Science. And finally, to everyone in America who's into Drum & Bass, keep the faith, its just a matter of time before you get the respect you deserve, that's what we had to do in England for years, until shit got rollin'. -PEACE.

KEEN
"Vol. 1" (white)
Another piece of the SS puzzle...three untitled tracks to choose from . The A-side comes in with a halfway filtered breakbeat that gets stompin along with a 4/4 bass line. It gets quiet for a second, then in comes the all frequent reversed bass sound that SS is making famous. This tune is D.A.R.K. The first cut on the B-Side is the one for crossover appeal with the classic samples, "Don't be afraid" & "Feel for me...want me". The drum & bass is fucking reckless. - AK1200
BLUE
"Untitled" (white)
SS on the undercover, stayin busy with a follow up to the massive "RED". A-side intros with reversed vocals and strings while Amens gradually get louder and louder until you hear a dog barking. A ruff drum & bass follows up to a nice little vocal selection. B-side starts with some baby vocals alongside organ stabs. Everything gets well going..and I do mean everything...MC samples, filters, sirens, 808 basslines, everything London goes for. Midway thru the tune, the bass reverses, rave style, then comes back for a chilly vocal breakdown. Both side sound like they'd be popular. -AK1200

KING ESSIE
"Cut and Run" (Plate)
Absolute perfect blend of intelligent beats, reggae bassline and soundclash samples. Don't let the dancehall side of it fool you..this is right-on serious drum programming! The first track has a slower drum groove that drops a serious blow every 8 bars and runs nicely into ragga chant half beat thing..."cut..and run it!" Track 2 features DJ & dancefloor friendly drums that beat tuff like Ron or SS in a catchy sort of way as another ragga chant pushes up the pace and hardstep keys and "yeah's" fly. Top of the playlist! Excellent! -Jeffee
Earl Grey
"The Lick" (Rugged Vinyl)
Rugged Vinyl has done it again with this one...pure atmosphere! Sounds like live music right from the start and carries on throughout the build with "live" drumsounds that will be sure to get noticed. The breakdown is just plain smoove! Some of that jazzy-vibed, late nite soul....live in concert! - AK1200
CONQUERING LION
"Rastaman/Code Black" (X-Project)
This is the long awaited "Code Black" follow-up to the (still playable after 1 & 1/2 years) "Code Red"! Beenie Man is the star vocalist as full samples are built around mashed beats & soundclash noise! The real treat is "Rastaman" on the flip with a roots reggae intro breaking into Beenie Man full-on again - extra catchy, oooohh god..hava mercy! A third, playable track is included for good measure. My definite record of the month...this one is the flames on top of "Fire"...get it domestically on Mango! (thanx danny!) -Jeffee
DENNIS BROWN
"Jungle Deb" (Ghetto Rock)
The guys at Street Tuff may be known for the Jungle Hits Volumes mostly, but fact is, they, along with Greensleeves, are churning out fine ragga-jungle tracks that always seem to get even the stiffest crowd JUMPING! This one is no exception..old school roots riff and Dennis Brown's smooth vocal sampled AM Radio style offsets the deep ragga bass and drum change-ups nicely. Gunshots galore..all the necessities for a serious groove. -Jeffee

AWOL - Various
"A Way of Life" - SAMPLER (Ministry of Sound)
A little taste of the forthcoming AWOL full length triple pack album apparently made live at the Ministry of Sound. The full LP will feature tracks by Darren Jay, Randall, Mickey Finn, G.Q. & Fearless, as well as the 4 that appear on this sampler: "P-Funk Era VIP mix", Kenny Ken's "Pied Piper", Alladin's "Mash-up Yer Know VIP", and Dream Team's remix of Gachet's "Touch my Toes"...all are well worth playing! Watch for the LP. -AK1200
ASEND
"Take Your Soul" (Northern Connexion Rmx)
Stringy riff intro with the title vocal bit creepin in then BOOM.....that Dillinja-like bass stab that melts the wax in your ears! A nice little drum workout follows that's absolutely mental! A drum & bass lover's dream come true. It gets dark, brightens up, then comes back in..Heavy! Watch the mix. -AK1200
FUZZYLOGIC
"Always Givin U" (21/22 Corporation)
"Oh...Baby..." The first tune fires out those very Pancake girl vocal samples as a mash of chopped tribalish drums push you to the edge. The right drop outs occur just when you think they won't. Sorta sounding like playable-experimental jungle (i.e. Reinforced) with echoed vocal samples prominent throughout this 4-tracker from the Monochrome man, Charles, outta Columbus,Ohio. This record came on gray swirling vinyl and had the grooves cut from the inside to the outside edge. For more information call: 614-470-1171 (the 21/22 Corp. voice mail) -Jeffee
BABYLONIAN
"Nemesis/Ball of Fire" (No Smoking)
No Smokin' is layin serious cancer for the hardsteppers. Both sides are as good as it gets! "Nemesis" starts with a classical piano lick that drops into the hummin' bassline and some stiff amen chops. The tune just rolls out from the start! "Ball of Fire" begins with a more classic house feel. It sounds almost like that Masters of the Universe record from way way back. Nice smooth build up on the beats as the strings & piano fade out. All things come to a stop and a wicked little mash section gets you ready for the drums & funky bassline to come. I need to quit smoking! -AK1200
J. MAJIK
"Jim Kutta" (Metalheadz)
Lay back and relax...listen to the vibes cause my man is layin foundations. Tom tom drums start it out with another rollin beat and proper bass sound...a mellow electric guitar thing follows. The rest of the tune comes in full-force with all kinds of close-to-tribal stuff. Another quick breakdown to wind things up in total chillout fashion. Check the flip for some heavy shit. -AK1200
TONIC
"The Mack" (Dee Jay Recordings)
One for the Hip Hop Crew! "The Mack" starts with a full G-funk synth and a hip hop riff....full beats roll in and keep going all the way for your listening pleasure. I personally prefer "Hip to the Hoppa" on the flip, with its delayed guitar riff that gives it a more East coast feel. Hard bass pinches that'll knock the shit off your neighbors starts surrounding the breakbeats. In comes a loop of the title and the rest is 100% drum & bass!-AK1200
ANDY C.
"Goes Around" (RAM)
I've had this for a few months now and I'm still playing it! (Now, I'm starting to get into the flipside!) Anyway, "Goes" starts off with soothing strings, then out of nowhere, this super loud bassline crashes in! Guaranteed to blow your system! The bass riff stays for a while as the strings come out. The hard-ass drum beats are patterned completely around the bassline. Make sure to get one of these! - AK1200

FLORIDA ★ SPECIAL REPORT
2 BAD MICE
LIVE AT THE EDGE IN ORLANDO, FLORIDA JULY 2, 1995
If any party goer in Florida hadn't heard Jungle music before tonite, they went home educated by one of the pioneers of UK drum & bass, Moving Shadow Record's 2 BAD MICE! This was the first time in a long time that live Jungle/Breakbeat has visited Florida...in fact, 2 BAD MICE had played at the Edge over two years ago with a host of other Moving Shadow acts & DJ's...but the music has evolved greatly since then and what was called Breakbeat, has become Jungle, etc.. and whew!...I guess I could sum it up like this: The best way to get Orlando into Jungle is to show the crowd the connection between 1992 and 1995, between the classics and the current, between what they know and the future...And I can think of no one better way to prove that there is a connection than to have a live 2 BAD MICE bring the crowd up to speed (literally) with their catalog of groundbreaking hits!
Onto the show: The 2 BAD MICE line-up included Sean on keyboards and MC Flux on the mic with Chief Moving Shadow man, Rob Playford on x-tra keyboards! The breakbeat classics were rolling: "Hold It Down", "Bombscare", "Drum Trip"...with Flux's mic reeling-up the crowd! It didn't take long to get to the tune that drew the line..."Helicopter", the final song...the song that set the standard for many Jungle records to come. The crowd was truly energized! Again, I think this was a great catalist in showing the connection between '92 and '95 Jungle. Many music fans lost that connection and think that Jungle has just come into existance. Thanx to Icee and AK for bringing this one together!

JUNGLE FLORIDA UPDATE
I CAN'T WAIT! If you don't already know...Orlando, Florida is hosting one of the biggest, baddest and unreal-ist Jungle parties ever in the USA...and the BIG part is that its partially sponsored by this very magazine! We had no clue how much of a bitch it is to hook together a jungle party of this magnatude...especially when we've got regular day-jobs plus have a jungle magazine to put out on a regular basis! So many little things that you'd never think of have to be taken care of which makes me have total respect for underground music promoters everywhere.
Anyway, we've fought our way through the crap, letdowns and unreturned phone calls and we've wound up with the "JUNGLIZED" all night jungle party at the Metro Skating Rink on September 23rd, 1995!
The whole idea from the start was that of Dan Donnelly, Chief of SUBURBAN BASE Records. He wanted to promote the release of the TELEPATHY CD on SUBURBAN BASE USA thru Moonshine Records in California with a major jungle rave in the US. AK 1200 was invited over to SUB BASE Headquarters where he and Dan discussed the idea of promoting it thru JUNGLIZED Info Zine and voila, there you have it...(really tho, it wasn't that easy.)
Thankfully, our friends at C.A.P. Productions, dancehall/reggae promoters from Orlando, stepped-up to help hook this party together...Peter, Ranger, and the crew fully realize the relation between jungle and dancehall and became involved full-on.
The line-up for the show is a junglist's dream..ANDY C., DANNY BREAKS, DEAD DREAD, JOHNNY JUNGLE, DJ ASH, & MC RUDE BWOY MONTY from the U.K. with AK1200, JEFFEE, JJ JELLYBEAN, KARL K., MC DUB 2 and JOSH SWISSMAN from around the US. The sound system will be provided by Orlando's #1 Reggae Soundsystem, KING CHALICE! (The Captain has the lowest bass in town!) Low-cost $10 tickets, the RPM Dancers of Orlando, T-shirts & merchandise selection from Jungle Nut of NYC, almost a full-bar...and what more could you want?? Remember, it's 18 & over only...and bring I.D.!
Now on to the normal news....DJ JEFFEE just returned from Tallahasse's LATE NITE LIBRARY (649 W. Gaines St.) on Aug. 31. Believe me, it's worth the drive (4 hours north)! It's a roomy club with an underground feel and super friendly club workers! No one was sure if Talahassee was ready for Jungle, but after a short wondering period, the crowd came through...especially outside! Almost every dancehall-jungle record in JEFFEE'S milk-crate got rinsed during the 2 & half hour jungle marathon. Thanx again to Lyle and the junglists up there for all the support! A major thanx to SANDY for taking the chance and hooking it up!
Marvellous Cain & Rude Bwoy Monty showin' us 2 of their favorite things!
Did I say how friendly everyone is up there? Also, JEFFEE teamed with AK1200 for a spot at UltraViolet (which is now ZEN) in Orlando a few weeks ago. Plus, look for JEFFEE at a weekly Saturday party at the Underground in Daytona Beach! An ULTRAMARINE show in November in St. Louis has JEFFEE on the bill..still in the "getting it together stage" tho.
AK1200's been all over....the UK, D.C. and various Orlando shows! AK opened for 2-Bad Mice at the Edge (see story in this issue)...he cooked the Edge again a few weeks ago opening for MOBY! On top of all that, he just came back from Baltimore where he did a party outdoors with DANNY BREAKS of DROPPIN SCIENCE! The crowd was unreal and fully into his and Danny's set. Much respect to the ULTRAWORLD crew! You can always expect the latest tunes & upfront dubplates from AK...Look for him in LOS ANGELES on Nov. 4th...and a future show in BOSTON. Call the brand new Junglized Info Line: 407-263-7688 for info on all the US parties and what DJ's will be where. Make sense?
DJ DREAD, the St.Petersburg/Tampa representative had a steady Thursday nite reggae/jungle thing at the METRO goin' but they've closed temporarily for remodelling. DREAD will also do a spot called "Underground Circus" on Tampa's WMNF 88.5 community radio station, hosted by Rich Rank. Tapes of that show should be hot!
Another HARD SCIENCE CRU party takes place in October at a different Daytona location...watch for flyers.
C.A.P. Productions is planning a full-on Ragga VS. Jungle Soundclash sometime down the road...but I know their sights are locked fully on the JUNGLIZED party for right now.
See ya next time..

JUNGLE NEW YORK UPDATE
STAMINA REPORT
Greetings to all Junglists!! This is the U'Buzzin Collective bringing you breif news from the Big Apple:
As we told you in the last issue, on May 27 U'Buzzin' put on a free event called Stamina that featured DJ's: Karl K., Dara, Clear, Panik, DB, Nynex, Odi, Kaos, and Cassien along with MC's Dub2, Panik and Rogue. Just after midnight, when the crowd was vibin', movin' and swayin' to the Jungle beat, the police shut us down. At that time, the junglist count was over 450! We'd like to thank everyone in attendance, as well as those that arrived after shut down. Respect to the DJ's & MC's who showed love, they did it for free, for the scene. Much love to the promoters who came all the way for the party and all Chicago, NY, D.C., Florida, Philly, Baltimore, Boston, Toronto and UK Massive. Keep the vibe rollin'.
ATTENTION RAVE PROMOTERS: For some reason, Jungle DJ's and MC's are always being placed in the back room with a shitty sound system (Where's light system??). Jungle music, more than any other music thrives on a full range, loud sound system. If you don't respect Jungle music by giving the DJ's a decent P.A. system, then don't have it at your event.
For more information on the U'Buzzin Collective call (718) 518-2905!

JUNGLE WASH D.C.
Maximum respect to all the Junglists who continue to support the scene! Without the real headz, we would not be able to have the independent jungl scene we are constantly creating. SLANT and Crew just returned from Londontown, where Drum & Bass is a way of life. They saw how things should be at parties like VOODOO MAGIC, where ANDY C. tore shit up, and SPEED. Thanks to the wicked shops like BLACKMARKET, SECTION 5 & UNITY, they got to pick up all the latest killer tunes! Big up's to Steve & Mike at SECTION 5, Rob Playford, Nicky Blackmarket and Flux. The 2-Tuff Crew will be on the road again soon: First to Florida, September 23rd for JUNGLIZED, the huge SUB BASE/JUNGLIZED Info 'Zine party. And then back to London this winter...give us a call to join the crew!
DJ Karl K. cookin at RINSE OUT!
This Summer was started correctly with RINSE OUT on June 17th which was one of DC's best (and hottest) jungle tings yet! AK1200, DOUBLE A + TWIST, KARL K., SLANT, SHAMUS, METHOD ONE and MC DUB 2 set it off! Then at SUNDAY MASS' 1-year anniversary, 2 BAD MICE made their presence felt! SLANT spun a tearin' set before original rude bwoy MC FLUX brought the roof down alongside 2 BAD MICE's set! ULTRAWORLD's all night cruise, RAVE THE BAY, had an all Jungle floor with Overload, DB, Dieselboy and Method One. Everyone enjoyed themselves, but perhaps an MC would have brought the crowd into it more. Then on August 19th, Pendium Matrix Productions threw CENSUS here in D.C. with Karl K., Slant, Guillaume, Overload, Shamus and MC Dub 2.
To end this great summer was ULTRAWORLD's SUNRISE FESTIVAL on Aug. 26th featuring the one and only DANNY BREAKS, straight from London as well as Sub Base/Junglized DJ, AK1200. MC DUB 2's car broke down so he didn't make it to the show. Baltimore will never be the same after that party!
DJ's send us your mix tapes and let us know what's going on drum & bass wise and where you are! Also be sure to leave a message on the 2-Tuff line: 202-736-1714 for more info on SLANT mix tapes, t-shirts (new design), stickers and DJ bookings. Send your stuff to 907 Portner Pl., Alexandria, VA 22314.
Things to look out for this fall: "Oh Gosh", the next party at the 2-Tuff warehouse (Baltimore's 1st all-night jungle party), the Snowball Collective and their DC Friday nite ting. A 2-Tuff and U-Buzzin' joint party!, the East coast J.A.P.M., and hold tight as 2-Tuff brings you RELOAD, with mature UK jungle vibe! So Continue to support those who deserve it and ignore the perpetrators! Big up your chest! — 2-Tuff Andy

JUNGLE CHICAGO UPDATE
The Chicago scene is in a bit of a transition at the moment. Reports in the media about raving have brought the city and "Chicago's finest" down hard on local promoters and made it nearly impossible to brock out to the solid jungle vibe anywhere in the city limits. Many rave promoters have moved their events to outlying suburbs in an attempt to keep it up and running only to meet with similar resistance form suburban authorities.
Jungle promoters like RIPE PRODUCTIONS and UPTEMPO DANCE remain determined to put together solid all jungle line ups and work hard to further the scene against some pretty tough odds.
JUNGLE HITS THE CLUBS: RIPE alongside MR. ZERO PRODUCTIONS hosted their first of many jungle nights at CLUB DREAD in Chicago. This ragga/dancehall club helps bring the proper flavor to the jungle vibe. DJ's on the night included wikked sets by DJ RP SMACK and absolute fire from DJ 3D Alongside MC SUB-ZERO. DJ 3D had the crowd rollin' with his mix of jump up and classics. JJ JELLYBEAN dropped a wikked set of up front jungle bizness. RIPE and MR. ZERO are planning their next night for late September. Contact them @312-509-6453.
"JUNGLE WARRIORS" brought together every jungle DJ and MC from Chicago for UPTEMPO DANCE's second strictly jungle club night. DJ's included 3D, SNUGGLES, SLAK from Indiana, PHANTOM 45, JJ JELLYBEAN, CASPER, RP SMACK, DANNY THE WILD CHILD, DR. GROO, JUSTIN TEWN, MC BLACK-EYE, MC SUBZERO, and more. UPTEMPO DANCE PRODUCTIONS is run by DJ 3D of DUB SOCIETY RECORDINGS in Chicago. Plans are already being made for JUNGLE WARRIORS #3. Contact UPTEMPO DANCE @ 708-604-0579.
New releases: Chicago DJ's a number of new releases in August. JJ JELLYBEAN and PHANTOM 45 teamed up for "JUNGLE UNITES", a 90 minute workout from 2 of Chicago's selectors. DJ SNUGGLES' seventh tape "THE FORMULA" is a wikked mix of solid drum and bass. SNUGGLES alongside DJ SLAK rolled "SMOOTH MOMENTUM" the calm and easy style highlights excellent skills on this d&b roller. PHANTOM 45's "THE GLIDE" was an instant sellout in the Chicago area. Dat recorded and fully mastered, the PH45 does not disappoint. DJ 3D's "AMEN BROTHER #2" hit in early August. For those who like the rinsin' Amen, this delivers. Hold tight for happy hardcore released by DJ CASPER out in September.
DUB SHACK has been busy finalizing their latest tape catalog. Alongside their work with local Chicago artists, DUB SHACK has finalized U.S. distribution arrangements with PRESTIGE MAGAZINE, an international strictly jungle mag from London. This full-size, full color magazine features the most updated information on London's jungle scene and will be available each month to get you sorted.
DUB SHACK UK is up and running to sort out the details on DUB SHACK RECORDS. Featuring U.S. as well as UK artists, DUB SHACK RECORDS will big up the solid jungle vibe on both sides of the pond. DUB SHACK UK will also be promoting events and has already dropped "JUNGLE UNDERGROUND" in Sheffield featuring MICKEY FINN, RANDALL,RON, RONI SIZE, L-DOUBLE, MOWGLI, EFX alongside MC GQ,BASSMAN and D.BO GENERAL. Hold tight for the DUB SHACK's first release by Boston's JASON MOUSE. ABSOLUTE FIRE!! Contact @ 708-604-1983, [email protected].
DJ's that made their way to Chicago recently included Pittsburgh's DIESELBOY who dropped a wikked set @ submerge. The LADY KEIR and SOULSLINGER also appeared on the night. Maxximum boost DJ SLAK, as he takes on a slot @ STRICTLY JUNGLE show on the 893fm. DVS6,0-1 from Houston spent a few days in town as well.
MAXXIMUM BOOST ALL BUILDING THE SOLID JUNGLE VIBE. OUR SCENE IS BUILT STRENGTH TO STRENGTH.
