Lauderdale's "Ruffneck Massive" leader, John Butler to give us the low-down on the Jungle clubs he and his crew encountered while spending the summer of '94 in England! This is the ultimate field trip! Eh? At the end of the article - check the info if you're interested in spending a few weeks in the U.K. next August. Now, on to a few British parties, eh mate?? Here we go...... LIMELIGHT - Tuesday, July 26 What can you say? A private party with a few friends - DJ's Randall, Brockie, Younghead, Rebel MC and MC's Navigator, Ragga Twins, 5-0 and Moose...just to name a few. This wasn't a rave, but an invitation only birthday bash for one of the big promoters in London. The venue? Limelight on Shaftsbury Avenue. The music? Wicked sets by everyone that were capped off at the end of the night with all the DJ's and MC's going back to back for the last hour...purely trying to out-do each other. You can only imagine the energy in this small club as the 250 friends in attendance were brockin' out on this special occasion. Definitely one of the trip's highlights. By the way, this was only on a Tuesday. TRIBAL DANCE - Paradise Club, every Friday night My favorite Friday night party with friend and resident MC, Prince. Paradise is more notably known for it's Saturday night party, AWOL, but Friday nights at Tribal Dance are not to be missed. Gachet and Darren Jay, among others, are who you can find on any given night at the Paradise. TELEPATHY - Roller Express, Lea Valley Trading Estate, Sat., July 30 By far the best night for pure fun. As my friend Navigator and myself arrived at the famous venue, Randall was just finishing up an obviously tearin' set, as the place was in a frenzy. We found Flinty Badman & Deman Rockers (Ragga Twins), Jack Frost and Rebel MC; and the champagne started flowin'. Frost closed the show with the Ragga Twins on the mic, blowing the roof off the place withthe most wicked set of choonz I've ever heard....including the hottest piece of vinyl this past summer, "Dread Bass"! Even though he was not on the line-up, Navigator did a guest spot on the mic with the Ragga Twins which included a tribute to the Ft. Lauderdale's Ruffneck Massive!!! (after a rewind of "Dread Bass" , of course.) THE MORNING AFTER - Gardening Club, Covent Garden, Sunday, July 31 What do you say about a party that doesn't start until 12 noon Sunday and goes 'til 8 p.m.? Let alone the fact that the featured DJ's include Darren Jay, Cool Hand Flex, Dr. S. Gachet, Brockie, Grooverider, Kenny Ken and Randall. Let alone the fact that Grooverider, Kenny Ken and Randall forewent the preset lin-up and played back to back to back for the last 2 hours, each playing for about 20 minutes at a time. No vinyl...just pure dubplate madness that kept the headstrong crowd buzzin' into the night. Let alone the fact that Navigator, 5-0 and MC Det were on the mic.....It was ok.....! •Ruffneck Massive would like to Big Up the ROAST crew & Kool FM Massive-Navigator, 5-0, Moose, Det, Brockie, Ron, SL, Swift, Footloose, & the rest of the boys. •Respect to Jack Frost, Rebel, Flinty & Deman, the Ibiza crew, Randall & Marlon, the Rider, and Prince. •Ruffneck Massive is returning to the U.K. in August of '95 for another trip to England's top raves & clubs. CALIFORNIA SCENE REPORT The jungle community in LA and the surrounding area is relatively small, compared to the attention that the various forms of house music receive out here. Most of the events that feature jungle on their bill also have other forms of hardcore like gabberhaus being played as well. The one weekly club that has managed to squeeze a little jungle into its lineup is a club called Insomniac. Though they tend to focus more on the older style of techno, the promoters have been fairly open to jungle. Often the one-off events that have jungle DJ's in the lineup fall prey to poor planning, bad vibes, bad promoting or the Los Angeles Police Department. Such was the case with the latest one-off hardcore event, "Operation Orange". Happening on October 15, "Operation Orange" had the makings of a great party. The event took place in an abandoned warehouse about an hour outside the LA area. Junglist DJ Curious was in full swing when his set was stopped short by violent people who could not understand the jungle vibe and were demanding other forms of music. "Egyptian Lover" and "When I Hear Music by Debbie Deb were slapped on to appease these angry folk--wack!! Then it was back to jungle with LA's DJ the Chemist. Due to generator problems and insufficient funds to pay the soundman, the party was shut down early by the sound man himself, after a shouting match with the promoter. The bad vibe in the crowd and the poor generator killed the night and once again made a bad showing for the scene. There has been talk of future events by quality promoters but no proof has been seen. Keep your eyes and ears open, though, jungle will blow up in LA and all of the U.S. RESPECT... -Josh Swissman Top: DJ Curious doggin' the wax Bottom Left: One One Nine Junglist Crew... LAW of the JUNGLE moonshine music Looks like the good folks at Moonshine hooked up with the HOT folks at Sounds of the Underground (S.O.U.R.) Records to bring to American malls, the first U.S. Jungle compilation CD! S.O.U.R. recently scored big when Shy/Fx & U.K. Apachi's ragga stormer, "Original Nuttah," climbed to #38 on the U.K. national charts. That track is featured here as well as the earlier Shy FX & Gunsmoke cooker, "Original Gangsta". Part-time Ibiza Records artist, Potential Bad Boy, has 2 smokin' tracks on this comp., one with MC Det ("move your body body") & "Vibes" (w/Chatter B.) actually giving hints of happiness, until the trademark PBB drum 'rolls' arrive & you know you ain't left the jungle...no way. MC Olive and the Slam Collective have produced one of the stranger jungle tracks with "Heaven 'N Hell." The Booyaka Crew (w/Tippa Irie) update Sugar Minott's 1986 dope-pushing dancehall tune, "Herbsman Hustling". For the moody/intelligent crowd there's T-Power's "Elemental"- an uplifting track, with layered 'movie-soundtrack' keys and a strong, steadily pounding beat. T-Power's echoing vocal sample repetitions on "Lipsing Jamring" become part of the rhythm before the melodic bells and chords take hold. This compilation is definite proof of the S.O.U.R. line-up's variety of artistic styles. So, once again we give RESPECT to Moonshine Records for consistently bringing the U.S. kids the freshest U.K. hardcore (i.e. the "Speed Limit 140+ BPM" series) and consistently stuffing their compilations full of tunes that even the aficionados have trouble getting their hands on. Big Ups to Moonshine! S.O.U.R. FLORIDA SCENE REPORT In the space of two months or so, Florida's gone from "nuthin much going on" to "downright BUSY!" The guys at the MADHOUSE in Daytona Beach know what's going on....they've got a handle on the new U.K. stylee and they're not afraid to push it. That's why you can hear the JUNGLE VIBE every other Friday Night (and some Saturdays), 3 a.m. to ?, with rotating Florida DJ's: AK1200, Jeffee, The Hard Science Cru (DJ Redcoat, DJ Jedi and DJ ShadowFax) and more! Oct. 22nd featured the mixing of AK1200. You gotta remember that the kids in Florida have probably heard very little jungle. Since few clubs dare to venture into the 1994 scene, the party-goers here are exposed to only 'trip-hop', trance & house. That taken into consideration...the AK1200 night went very well! The crowd definitely was not complaining or leaving. Some danced, most just sort of grooved around the dancefloor, soaking in the new vibes. New U.K. plates & promos were dropped by AK, meaning there was no takin' it easy on the crowd...this was full on hardcore. The Hard Science Crew took over after AK, winding the night (morning) up. The MADHOUSE is LIVE! The killer PA handles all the bass. Lights & fog too. Daytona's only about 45 minutes from Orlando and it's about time there is a steady place to go to hear good 1994 tunes. The MADHOUSE Crew is in the process of moving their operation into a larger, two-room space. Give their info line a call (904) 252-0990 to see when they'll be settling in, and when the next JUNGLE NITE goes off. Tampa, Florida, on the other hand, is about 75 minutes in the other direction...tings be happenin' down there too! The Empire used to be called Masquerade and in the back room you'll find the Opium Den, which normally serves as a chill-out room. But there was no chillin' on October 26th! Once a month we gotta Jungle Nite happening there too (thanx to DJ Three and Trip Magazine). The opening night featured Junglized DJ, Jeffee, along with St. Petersburg's resident bad bwoy DJ Dread tearin' it up. It was so surprising to see the amount of jungle supporters that showed up on a dreary Wednesday night! Many stayed in the back room all night long, goovin' around to DJ Jeffee's ruff ragga set and Dread's smooth mixing. Even DJ Three got into the action - spinning Moving Shadow tunes to open & close the event! The BBC's 'All-Black' CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE AK1200 in control of the Madhouse in Daytona Beach DJ Redcoat & MC Glenn

Florida Continued... Jungle Documentary was shown on video and Moonshine's 'Speed Limit 5' compilation cassettes were passed out to lucky junglists! The Opium Den is definitely not the biggest back room in the world...but a decent PA and good vibes make it definitely worthwhile! And who knows...back rooms today could mean main rooms tomorrow for the junglistic ting! Remember, this is a monthly event, so ask around at The Alternative Record Store in Tampa for info on next month's jungle night. To all the fans & first timers...keep up the support! DJ Dread studies the grooves. MC/DJ Redcoat & DJ Jeffee workin' the Madhouse crowd. The State of the Rave Address We all know that it's time for a change in the stagnant Orlando music scene. There's plenty of people here who would like to see Hardcore/Jungle get the chance it deserves to explode at the clubs & parties-and there's some people who obviously don't.... Now, no one is talking about replacing Trance & Groove at the parties, but just letting Jungle co-exist and get equal play like it does in most other major cities....'cause in the end, it's all coming from the same place - House music. Jungle is just the most upfront, ever-changing style of House music out there. It contains elements of all the other forms of House music (as well as every other form of music in general) and mixes them with the strongest dance-beat around! Given the chance, party go-ers will see that it has a lot to offer for a different night out. It will happen! It is starting to happen! Orlando, open up your listening (and dancing) mind. It would be great to see a scene that can be flexible enough to support all styles of house...be-it Hardcore-Jungle-Trance-Groove-Techno-Garage and even Gabbal Why should it be any other way?? -DJ REDCOAT JUNGLE EVERY OTHER FRIDAY only at MADHOUSE Kickin' PA & Light Show! 40 min. from Orlando! Come Work It Out To The Music You've Only Read About... the U.K. Jungle/Hardcore/Breakbeat Vibe Is Here! DROPPING SCIENCE 3- Firing Line (Dropping Science) Total crap record.. .don't even bother listening to this shit...No, seriously, this is yet another mashin' record from the laboratory. Intro starts with down-groove organ riff and some not-to-cheeky Star Trek samples. The song builds up into a realm of chopped breaks & heavy bass drops. Before you know it, the catchy organ riff returns to ride things out. AA-side, "Do It", uses the Gonzo break, nicely cut with a vocal loop of the title served in several different echo stages. Be sure to look for the Safari Sounds remix featuring Daddy Freddy vocals & the full-on Shinehead drum machine. (AK1200) DROPPING SCIENCE 4 Safari Sounds - Long Time Comin' (Dropping Science) Another fat experiment from the D.S. Crew! The X-Large mix starts with pure happy-vibe strings & a male vocal hook of the title. Then, you know what's comin' next...a series of different breaks guided by a real stompy bassline. The flip is "Danny Breaks Needs A Green Card" mix of the same song which remains more musical, while keeping the punch of the drum & bass. Fuckin' brilliant track. (AK1200) SOUN' BWOY (Pin High Recordings - Promo) Dis one is my top ragga record of the month! Complete Soun' Bwoy toasting - full on - sampled from Cutty Ranks & arranged with class! Nice & slow drum drops finish each verse as a vintage Jamaican horn section smooths out the middle for one well done ragga record. Hopefully this one will get a proper release. (Jeffee) MAT - Phat & Phuturistic (Bear Necessities) Intelligent beats dropped ruff and well is what is found on this piece of plastic. Check part 1 for cool tinkling keys, vocal wails and all around fresh percussion and keyboard sounds. Flip it for part 2 and a bongo and chime rush on the intro. Sound drops out to a brief silence only to be blasted by intricate rolling drum patterns moving perfectly with the B-line. Just when you think you've got the pattern down, Mat wheels up and drops totally different with another rhythm. Bear Necessities coming intelligent--very good showing. (Josh Swissman) THE SOUNDMAN/DON LLOYDIE feat. ELIZABETH TROY - Greater Love (S.O.U.R. promo) Whoa..this is one HOT record!! A beautiful song (that's right - song!) with soothing, full female vocals and light jungle beats. I dropped this tune after rolling thru a dozen hard ragga records and the whole room went dreamy...a truly-uplifting dreamy! Everyone wants to know "WHAT IS THIS RECORD??", the second the opening "Oooh's" began. X-tra catchy & classy - this one will be BIG! (Jeffee) THE GIMP - Your Mind (Proper Talent) Another mackin' track for the Proper Talent label...Completely chaotic drum programmes roll by one after the other in an ever-so-skilled manner. These are hardcore chop breakbeats from front to back with just enough room for a late-night piano break. Sure to inflict pain on anyone who can't handle the pressure. (AK1200) DJ MONK/WYNEE (KLP Promo) Follow up to the massive "Good Body Girl" , this cut leans toward a more dark approach, although it's still a slammin' tune. 3 different mixes of the same cut. The main mix is introed with some bell-like sound & cut up (Def Jeff) HEAVYWEIGHT VOL. 2 & 3 (Heavyweight) I've got lots of records I call drum & bass but these two ten-inches are stripped down to the bare minimum-for maximum effect. These guys have managed to build catchiness into their rhythm thru simple repetition. A sparse bass line meets occasional distantly melodic keys and echoing voice samples. Get these for the killer label sides cause the logo sides to both records are fuller sounding, but less memorable. (Jeffee)

record NEWS NO GUN BUSINESS (Sensi-Press) This record has been on several UK charts for quite a while. The main track is female vocal introed with familiar ragga breaks and a drum & bass style that has a DJ Hype feel to it - smokin'! B side has 2 cuts which appeal to me even more....lots of mellow drums, more female vocals, ragga snippets...definitely vibe stuff if you can find it. (Def Jeff) SPATTS - Rock Me Slowly (White) The Criminal Minds' big guy whips up a wicked track! It starts with a little guitar loop that completely takes control after the intro. Loads of chop breaks come crashing through. As I listen, the only words that come to mind are pure sophistication. It's all music...with hardcore percussion. The second cut on the flipside is a D'Cruze remix of Criminal Minds' "Jump The Gun". Absolutely massive! Straight talent that you must hear for yourself. (AK1200) DJ MAYHEM - Precious Metal (White) Another smooth ass 12" from Mayhem! The A-side sways along with silky strings accented by the everpopular "Do you want it right now?" vocal bit as the drums come in (just in time) to get things rolling. A huge breakdown soon follows to give everyone a breath, then gets back to serious business. This is a full-on positive vibe with ruff & tuff drum and bass. The AA-side stays similar by using happy, stringy intros and the "We got to live together" vocal. It comes in hard with an old-school beat and could appeal to people who aren't necessarily into jungle. (AK1200) TOM & JERRY - Vol. 10 (Shell) The 'cat & mouse' are back again with 4 tracks of chilled jungle. The A-sides stays more on the ragga tip for the jump-up crew, while the AA-side gets more involved in deeper music & both cuts are wicked. "Maximum Booty Style Pt. 3" has a little ragga with a R & B riff that rolls into a male soul vocal. Check it. (AK1200) QUICK PICKS... SHY FX/U.K. APACHI - "Original Nuttah" Remixes (S.O.U.R.) T-Power gets the A-side nod by adding melodic keys to smooth out the drum-mayhem & giving the track a new feel. (Jeffee) DJ HYPE - Roll The Beats (Remix)/ Dawn of the Fever (Suburban Base) Dawn of the Fever has a brilliant drum & bass pattern - the best ever! (DJ Dread) DEXTROUS/TEEBONE - Selector's Roll (Subliminal) Cookin' old-school beats, ragga & disco samples do the usual serious biz. (Jeffee) RED LIGHT - Wow Yeh (Red Light) Plate #2 from these guys...expect only quality drum & bass. Arrested Development samples on side A. Flip's definitely for the booyaka crew. (Josh Swissman) PESHAY - Psychosis (White) The man is laying serious wisdom on today's hardcore. Total chillout with soulful female vocal blows that glide all over the whole room. The drum workout toward the end is sure to catch the ear of anyone within striking distance. "Represent", on the other side, is the one everyone has been waiting for, with the India vocals. (Not the one with all the piano... that's coming out soon.) But this one does the trick! Jungle beats & jungle bass backed by intelligence. (AK1200) RED ONE Remixes (Liftin Spirit) One of the best records of recent time gets an entire re-working. Ant Miles totally changes the whole context of "The Futurist" with rolling beats & fierce bass lines that support ambient strings and dreamy sound patterns. The flip is the Origin Unknown remix of "Alive & Kickin'" with totally out of control drum programmes-absolutely carved into the vinyl. There's no stopping this one.
