Urban Jungle
When parking up at Urban Jungle, the amazing bass from the sound system hit me. I knew instantly the sounds would be kicking and was in no way disappointed, I could feel the vibrations even from the outside.
The venue is the usual home to Hyperbolic, .there's something about this venue that has me going back for more and more, and so filled with good vibes.
On entry I met Horace or 'H', the organiser. I can only describe this guy as having a spot on all round great attitude especially towards the dance scene.

'A Nation Under One', is what the flyer said and describes the mood in Urban Jungle to a 'T'. Black and White really did unite with the Junglists, jungling under one groove in a prejudice free united posse. The way it should be. I've often found Jungle rooms to be moody, but this one was filled with good moods. I'll definitely be attending more of H's events, next being 'Aspects Of Love' in Peterborough.
There were two arenas, one for the Junglists and another for the Hedonists who prefer House and Garage. My first love is Happy Hardcore, but I spent my evening flitting from one to the other. This gave a very pleasing balance for me getting the best of both worlds. Shame more people didn't make it, but as it was the first event of its type at this venue it probably made a difference.

If you're into Drum 'n' Bass with an attitude free environment, then the next Urban Jungle should be the venue for you.
Bronson kicked off in the Jungle room with some very mellow, almost soulful Jungle. A refreshing change for me! Next up was Sincere. Who did some blinding mixes and dropped some well liked tracks. He works in a record store in Peterborough, has a sound attitude and loves his Jungle.
Following Sincere was Kenny Ken who brought it down to some darker stuff. The rest of the Drum 'n' Bass DJ's kept it quite dark for the rest of the night, the other DJ's being Hyper Hyper, Gappa G, Kai and Melvin D.
Kai did some really interesting mixes and the MC's worked well alongside him. I hadn't heard him before and was quite impressed by the originality.
Last but by no means least was Melvin D. I've met Melvin on several previous occasions, he is definitely no novice to the turn tables. He used to run his own radio station in the smoke, he loves his Drum 'n' Bass and is a well rated as a DJ. In H's words, "He rocks the place". Nice one Mr D.
The MC's were Screech, Firing Squad and the Bush Doctor crew. I heard some excellent rapping that night which enhanced the mood even more.
Peace!

The PA for the evening was Mysticism who I'd really been looking forward to hearing excellent vocals, the dancers were so erotic that many stood in awe with mouths wide open. Also Ted on keyboards, well talented with an old school attitude.
The House and line up started with Paul Grant. He always drops excellent tunes whether he's playing House, Drum 'n' Bass, Hardcore or Jungle. He's doing a damned good job too especially as he's only been mixing since last November. After all variety has got to be the spice of life.
The other House DJ's were Julz, Nick Stater, Mark Nicholls and Danny Edwards. I really rated Julz who did some spot on mixes which couldn't have been easy as there was no monitor in this room. Also Ryan G, I loved his set, it really got me going. I think I'm now seeing the attraction of House and Garage, which definitely oozes sex.
Lastly I must say how artistic and apt the backdrops were enhancing the Jungle feel to the evening in a big way.

RIPE
1992-1993-1994-1995--still rollin''
""Can't you see what he has done for us by now.""
R I P E tha HYPE!
(1)What does RIPE stand for?
Originaly conceived----a good (positive) night out anything goes everyone welcomed black, white, brown whatever, straight, gay, smart, stupid and ugly. Now our eyes are on the fixed prize NO surrender --No defeat! Hope for a better tomorrow.
(2)Define your meaning of jungle music?
SHIT---everything imageable in good taste that is. Soul, R&B, gansta, raga, horn arangements all cooked up with wicked technology laided to a driving bassline 80-120 bpms. Everyone even (sucka ravers) think they have to jog to the frantic snare & highlight a demostration of their thanks.
(3)Have you seen any change yet?
SHIT---not enough response it's been hard understanding, but i wouldn't hesitate in doing it over again. Junga is change and most people are afraid of this and also the main issue.
(4)Tell me how you feel about rave?
FAILED! All i see are non-black etc.. faces. Rave was a meeting ground for all races not one. Let's elevate 'n create a higher level of peace. Now ya got suckas promoting evil shit, which has nothing to do with the culture.
Ravers talking about what Dj is the best and the promoters rave fashion shit, but yo--everyday ya gotta keep waitng for things to get better.
(5)What do we plan to do with CLUB DREAD?
SHIT! This is like luck! Action speaks louder than words.

(6)Your musical dream?
Give all the homies down for the struggle a place to record. And help set the agenda in motion. GIVE BACK THE HOOD and support and love our youth, we have to be the rolemodels since the goverment has declared war on drugs. I mean us in general. Most of our best minds are locked down. The Govt. has backed. This mental extermation, Robbed us of our culture. Like they say HIS--torY. Our people were building pyramids, sewage systems, charting the stars 3,000. years before the Jewish Folk hero
(7)Is hip-hop sorta like jungle?
Same people, same struggle, same movement. History is repeating itself, because no one's listening.
(8)What does "Rinse out mean?
Music wise turning the channel from HBO showtime (techno/house) to the information center/ jungle hip-hop--do you just wanna be entertained or do you wanna have fun and learn at the same time. The choice is yours!
(9)Are you going to keep the jungle rave rollin?
Far to many people have beeen degraded, manipulated, tourtured, raped and slaughter. This is an international movement --a rinse out and people better pay attention to this wake up call!

Jungle Unite
I can't sit back any longer and listen to the constant 'misplaced facts' about Jungle, and the scene that goes with it. It seems that everyone thinks Jungle is moody and all Jungle events are moody too. I've been a Jungle follower for a while now and mainly frequent Innersense at the Lazerdrome. Being white and attending a dominantly black club, I have never once experienced any grief there, or anywhere else.
The mistake seems to be that people don't quite understand Jungle. Jungle isn't about white gloves, smiling faces, hugs etc. Jungle is about music and dancing. Watch how people act in Jungle clubs and you'll soon realise that there's no bad atmosphere, just a different one.
I'm not saying there's never any trouble, but trouble sticks its oar in everywhere at some point, that, sadly, this is society as it stands today.
Page 14
Jungle tends to attract an older crowd. Think of us as the left overs of those who didn't want to get into the House scene. Jungle is original and, with Hardstep up and coming (respect to Fabio and LTJ Bukem for that!) it has a lot to offer.
Happy Hardcore is fine if that's what you want, but it's lack of originality (how many classic anthems did Naughty Naughty rip off?) made people look for something new.
I'm not saying Happy Hardcore is crap, there's some good stuff about, but Jungle isn't a disease. So please all you people out there who slag off what you don't know, try it, remember what I said, then decide. See you soon! Russell.
Stepping forward Jungle unites!

Interview
WHEN DID YOU FIRST START MC'ING?
I STARTED OFF WHEN I WAS YOUNG, NOT WITH NO SOUND SYSTEM OR NOTHING, JUST GETTING ON IT WHEREVER I COULD.
WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR NAME FROM?
IT CAME FROM WHEN I WENT OVER TO THE STATES AND LIKE POLICE OVER THERE ARE CALLED FIVE-O, AND WHEN I CAME BACK AND WAS OUT WITH FRIENDS AND I SAW POLICE I'D SAY 'LOOK THERE'S FIVE-O MAN' AND AS I SAY FIVE-O IS POLICE IN AMERICA AND AS FAR AS I'M CONCERNED I'M HERE TO POLICE THE RAVE, KEEP THINGS IN ORDER.
MC 5IVE-0 INTERVIEW
BY DARK NOISE ORIGINAL
BY LISTENING TO YOUR MC'ING THIS SEEMS TO BE THE CASE AS IN IF SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE SAID TO THE JUNGLIST MASSES YOU SEEM TO BE THE MC NOMINATED FOR THE 'PUBLIC ADDRESS'.
OH, I GET NOMINATED DO I? WELL ITS LIKE THIS, I ADDRESS CERTAIN ISSUES THAT NEED TO BE ADDRESSED SIMPLY BECAUSE I'VE SPENT SO MANY YEARS HELPING TO BUILD THIS SCENE CREATING IT OUT OF F/*CK ALL. MY TYPE OF WORK IS NOT JUST ABOUT MC'ING, IT'S ABOUT BUILDING A RELATIONSHIP WITH THE PEOPLE SUCH AS IF SAY SOMEONE SAYS TO ME 'I DON'T LIKE THE SECURITY THERE' OR 'I DON'T LIKE THIS...' WHATEVER THEN THAT'S LIKE AMMUNITION FOR ME. I'LL JUST GO STRAIGHT UP KOOL FM OR IN A RAVE WHATEVER AND ADDRESS THE ISSUE THERE AND THEN. IF THE PEOPLE, THE GENERAL MASSES, FEEL THAT WAY INCLINED, THEN I'LL JUST GO AND JUST SAY IT.
WHAT OTHER MUSIC TASTES DO YOU HAVE?
HIP HOP, GANGSTER RAP, CULTURE REGGAE, SOME TYPES OF RAGGA, NO SLAP RAGGA. ALL TALKING ABOUT WOMEN, DEGRADING THEM, THAT'S NOT TEACHING NOBODY NOTHING.
DO ANY OF THESE INFLUENCE YOU IN YOUR MC'ING BAR THE LAST ONE?
SOME REGGAE SOME RAGGA BUT I WOULD SAY RAP MAINLY
WHEN DID YOU FIRST START MC'ING OVER JUNGLE?
1990 THAT'S WHEN WE FIRST STARTED CALLING IT JUNGLE AND IF ANYONE ELSE THINKS JUNGLE HAS JUST COME AROUND THE OTHER DAY THEN THEY'VE GOT IT WRONG. IT'S BEEN AROUND LONGER THAN MOST PEOPLE THINK, THIS IS NO NEW THING ONLY TO PEOPLE THAT HAVE JUST DECIDED TO STAND UP AND TAKE NOTICE. SOME WOULD SAY SOME PEOPLE ARE INTO IT BECAUSE IT'S FASHIONABLE. WELL I SAY THIS IS NO FASHION BUSINESS. I LOVE THE STYLE, STYLE NEVER GOES OUT, FASHION ALWAYS GOES - STYLE ALWAYS STAYS.
WHAT MICS DO YOU RATE?
SHURE CORDLESS CHAMPION BUBBLER! LOOKING TO GET MY OWN PERSONAL ONE THIS YEAR. THAT'S THE NEW LICK BWOY, MOOSE HAS GOT HIS, I'M HAVIN' MINE YEAH MAN.
HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN WITH ONE DJ?
I STARTED OUT WITH DJ RON THE SARSPARELLA KID, IN ACTUAL FACT I GAVE HIM THE SARSPARELLA KID NAME, IT'S ALWAYS BEEN ME AND RON REALLY. WE'VE GREW UP AS LITTLE KIDS AND THAT WE'RE TALKING LIKE 9 OR 10 AND LIKE NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOURS AND THAT. FIVE-O CAN GET HIRED AS FIVE-O NOT JUST AS FIVE-O AND DJ RON.
PART ONE
WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR MAIN BREAK AS AN MC?
I SAY YEAH MAN, BIG UP THE 'ROAST', SUNDAY ROAST, WHICH WAS KICKING OFF IN 1990 AT 10 AM EVERY SUNDAY WITH DJ'S LIKE FABIO, RICHIE FINGERS, MATHEW B, GROOVERIDER, RON, TAMSIN WITH MC'S SUCH AS CHALKY WHITE, ME AND MOOSE, THIS ALL TOOK PLACE AFTER US GOING TO RAVES SUCH AS SUNRISE, BACK TO THE FUTURE, BEYOND THERAPY, WALLACE ROAD, KARMA SUTRA, KRYPTONITE, RYGATE, HELTER SKELTER ALL THE OLD ACID HOUSE RAVES BUT YEAH ROAST, THAT'S WHERE I GOT MY BREAK. BIG UP EVERTON, PAUL AND KINGSLEY THE ORIGINAL ROAST PROMOTERS.
BIG up In YOUR CHEST!

Interview
DO YOU PREFER RADIO OR OUT IN THE EYES OF THE PUBLIC?
I LIKE IT ALL THE SAME, IT'S LIKE WITH THE GENERAL PUBLIC WHEN I'M OUT I CAN SEE THEM, AND YOU CAN BE UP FRONT AND STRAIGHT WITH THE PEOPLE THAT'S WHY I LOVE THAT SIDE OF IT SO MUCH. I THINK THE CROWD KNOW WHERE THEY STAND WITH ME, I DON'T BULLSHIT AND SOME PEOPLE ARE NOT VERY GOOD AT THAT STANDING UP AND TELLING SOMEONE HOW THEY FEEL BUT ME I DON.T GIVE A FAIK IF YOU DON'T LIKE WHAT I'M TELLING YOU TOO BAD, THAT'S JUST ME, I TRY TO MAKE THE PEOPLE FEEL LIKE THEY ARE PART OF SOMETHING LIKE ME, I FEEL THAT I'M PART OF SOMETHING TO BE PART OF THAT'S A NICE FEELING. IT MIGHT BE HARD WORK BUT I'M PREPARED TO DO HARD WORK FOR SOMETHING I SO STRONGLY BELIEVE IN SUCH AS THE RAVESCENE IF WE CAN ALL BE AN ASSET TO THE SCENE AND NOT PERPETRATE THE BUSINESS, NOT PERPETRATE THE FLEX THEN EVERYTHING CAN RUN TIDY, THE SHIP CAN RUN TIGHT AND AT THE END OF THE DAY EVERYBODY'S RESPONSIBLE IN THIS SCENE
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT MC'ING ON THE RADIO?
ON THE RADIO IS GOOD, YOU CAN'T SEE THE PUBLIC
SOUND TOO MONOTONOUS. THAT'S WHY I ALWAYS COME WITH DIFFERENT ANGLES, DEPENDING ON WHAT HAT I PUT ON. TODAY I GOT MY MC HAT ON, SOME DAYS I WEAR MY COMEDY HAT AND SOMETIMES MY SERIOUS HAT, ANOTHER DAY I'LL WEAR THIS HAT AND SO ON. THATS HOW IT GOES WITH ME, THINGS THAT GET ME BUZZING TO GO UP THERE SUCH AS THE ERIC CANTONA SAGA JUST GIVES ME LOADS OF AMMUNITION TO GET ON THE MIC WITH. THATS JUST ME AND MY OWN ORIGINAL STYLE, I HAVE TO RUN THAT KIND OF SLAPSTICK COMEDY BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO REALISE, BECAUSE YOU CANT SEE THE AUDIENCE YOU DON'T KNOW WHO THE HELL IS LISTENING. PEOPLE THINK THAT WHILST I'M ENTERTAINING ITS A BLACK AUDIENCE BUT IT ISNT, AND THEY HAVE TO REALISE THAT WHEN I COME OVER MY STYLE IS CLEAN AND CLEAR AND IS ENGLISH. I'M NOT TRYING TO SOUND JAMAICAN OR AMERICAN OR ANYWHERE ELSE ITS JUST ME AND MY OWN PERSONALITY. ALSO ON THE RADIO YOU HAVE TO BE VERY CAREFUL WITH WHAT YOU SAY, EXTREMELY CAREFUL, AND I HAVE LOST IT ONE TIME WHEN I WAS ON RUSH FM, I PUT IT DOWN TO THE FACT THAT I WAS YOUNG AND INEXPERIENCED AND INADEQUATE TO REACT TO THE SITUATION WHICH WAS SOMEONE RANG UP AND SAID SOMETHING WHICH KIND OF THREW ME OFF COURSE, KNOCKED ME OUT OF MY STRIDE, I WAS CUSSING WITHOUT OBSENITIES AND ALL OF A SUDDEN .... **** .... I JUST PUT THE MIC DOWN AND THOUGHT NA SAT DOWN AND HAD A LONG HARD THINK, YOU MUST STAY ON TOP OF IT BECAUSE YOU ALWAYS GONNA GET THE LIVIN AMOUNT OF WIND UP CALLS. KOOL FM IS STILL ON COURSE THEY KNOW HOW TO ADDRESS THEMSELVES
IT MUST BE HARD WHEN YOU GET A CALL FROM AN IMMATURE AUDIENCE
