BIG-UP ALL MASSIVE
JUNGLE
SPLASH - 'Babylon Must Fall' (DJ Recordings)
Still a test pressing, this DJ Trace produced drum n' bass monster was possibly the biggest track in the clubs over the festive period.
DRIZA BONE - 'Gonna Happen' (Leviticus Remixes) (4th & Broadway)
Standing alone amidst a whirl of soul and garage mixes, this is a simple but extremely effective rolling drum and bass remix. Leviticus take only a small amount from the original to give it a floating rare groove tang.
DOC SCOTT - 'Far Away' (Metalheads)
Another sublime piece of intelligent drum and bass from one of the people responsible for bringing the music forward to where it is today. PROJECT ONE - 'Cheeba '95' (Rising High)
One of the original breakbeat labels returns to the fold with tearin' remixes of this classic junglist skin up tune.
SHUT UP AND DANCE - 'Bastards' (SUAD)
A massive club tune that's been about on dubplate for an eternity. Alternating reverse b-line patterns and that unmistakable "keep jumpin yer bastards" vocal sample make this tune.
SPRING HEEL JACK - 'Oceala' (Test Pressing)
Strictly for the intelligent, both tracks on this 12 are superb, mixing old style techno with up to date beats - strictly musical.
SEDZY - 'White' (Flex)
Absolutely firing, this is the first release by Manchester's Sedzy on Flex. Sampling Mary J. Blige and cult reggae film Rockers, this is a winner.
RAGGA
GARNETT SILK - 'Fussing And Fighting' (Penthouse)
The death of Garnett Silk is a sad loss to reggae. Garnett had the potential to return ragga to its cultural roots and if this is his epitaph, his anti violence creed will live on. Watch for his posthumous album on East West.
MAD COBRA - 'Selassie Rules' (Greensleeves)
With even Buju now growing locks, the deejays are converting thick and fast. This is a pure Rastafari big up from the man who once said, "Flex, time to have sex". Funny how the pendulum swings.
REDROSE AND MALVO - 'Never Get' (Greensleeves)
Sly and Robbie give this ragga groove a late 70s natty dread vibe, while Redrose and Malvo sing up a righteous anthem. Flip it to the dub, 'Never Get Riddim' for a serious computer dub to rub to. Murderous!
CAPLETON - 'Chalice' (African Star)
This has the same muscular strength as his recent hit 'Tour' - a jump up riddim that is nearly all pulse and no melody.
LINVAL THOMPSON & CHUCKLEBERRY - 'Ease Up' (Thompson Sound)
This UK roots ragga groove follows the JA return to old school riddims but transcends a predictable turn of events by adding deejay Chuckleberry, sounding like an outrageous swaggering drunk. Don't get me wrong, this is well worth checking.
GARY MINOTT - 'Seek God' (Madhouse)
Gary Minott is a singing deejay who can really cut up a holocaust. The riddim is state of the art futuristic ragga business: new sample sounds, addictive beats - the dancehall of 1996 today.
Paul Ablett

Daddy Screw & Donovan Steele
Miss Bonafide
(Mad House) The winning combination of Daddy Screw & Donovan Steele is ready to tear up any session with "Miss Bonafide" on the hottest rhythm in rotation right now, "Arab Attack". The first track released on "Arab Attack" was "Slim" by Beenieman which has blown up in a big way. For the mix, try "Seek God"/Gary Minott, "Yuh & Yuh Man"/Frisco Kid, "Certain Gal"/Beenieman, and "Buff Up Yuh Chest"/Daddy Screw & Donovan Steele. All on the same rhythm and label, distributed by Prethetics, (305) 378-2207.
Luciano & Louie Culture & Terror Fabulous
In This Together
(Xterminator) A lot of talent on this reggae ballad that shows the creativity and originality that fans have come to expect from Fatis Burnell and the Xterminator crew. "In This Together" has some sweet horns and subtle harmonies that make great background music for this talented trio.
Freddie McGregor
Push On [LP]
(Big Ship) Freddie McGregor, owner and co-producer of Big Ship Records, gives his worldwide fans a well-rounded, complete album with Push On. The LP contains past hits like "To Be Poor Is A Crime", "Jogging", and solid tracks like the title, "Seek & You'll Find" and "A Little Help On Jah". A positive addition to any collection.
Cocoa Tea & Spragga Benz
Lonesome Side
(Digital B) Cocoa Tea is sounding great for '95 with many releases, all with hit top vocals shining. The 45 of "Lonesome Side" includes the rock solid DJ-ing of Spragga Benz, who pumps up the track with some lyrical science. For Cocoa Tea by himself on this bluesy horn-filled downbeat rhythm, try "Lonesome Side" on his new album Come Love Me (VP), which also contains several popular tracks such as we "Do the Killing", "Too Much Gun Lyrics" and "Love Me Truly" featuring Shabba Ranks.
Chevelle Franklyn
Nice & Naughty
(RCA) For all the people who think Patra is the only dancehall queen who can rock the session, watch for Chevelle Franklyn, whose voice is extra sweet and whose tough DJ style is in full effect on "Nice & Naughty". Try the "ladystyle radio mix by Danny Browne for a pumping, uptempo track to move the crowd. Another RCA track to watch for is "Whiney Whiney" by Willi One Blood.
Beres Hammond & Red Foxx
Well Want The Wine
(Penthouse) Beres Hammond's original lyrics titled the "Sign" have been remixed with New York DJ Red Fox who gives some top class lyrics for the girls that lock together with Beres' warm vocals. For the mix, try "Fussing Or Fighting"/Garnett Silk, "Loving Was A Crime"/Buju Banton, and "Rise To Your Goal"/Jack Radics & Tony Rebel, all on the same rhythm and label.
Buju Banton
Love You To The Max
(Penthouse) Buju Banton consistently releases great tracks and "Love You To The Max" is no exception, with his rough vocal delivery which always seems to lock on the rhythm. Taken from a four-song 12" on Penthouse.
Mad Professor
Psychological Warfare
(Ariwo, RAS) Taken from Black Liberation Dub Chapter One "Psychological Warfare" gives a cutting edge political message with mind-bending state of the art dub that rattles your brain and moves your body at the same time. If you catch dub fever try "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Professor," recorded in Dubarama, also on RAS records.
Screwdriver
Free
(Starfish) Talented singer Screwdriver gives a fine performance while riding a popular remake of the Studio One "Love Me Forever" rhythm with some compelling sufferers lyrics. Other quality tracks on the rhythm and label include "Rastafari Liveth"/John Flex, "Rascal"/Derrick Lara and "Ghetto Upliftment"/Wickerman.
Luciano & Beenieman
Running Away
(Taxi) The hard to beat combination of Luciano and Beenieman has hit hard recently with some Bob Marley covers. Their first combination was the awesome "Crazy Baldhead" - which is one of the best releases to come out in a long time-and now another Bob cover with "Running Away". While this track doesn't quite reach the heights of "Crazy Baldhead" it's still a strong track. Taxi releases to watch for include "Rasta Reggae"/Cat Coore and "Heart Made Of Stone"/Viceroys.
Barrington Levy
Under Mi Sensi
(Time s/RAS) "Under Mi Sensi" is one of Barrington's best loved tracks and has been a dancehall anthem for the last decade. Taken from the CD reissue of Here I Come from 1985, this is a classic album with the Roots Radics backing, a deadly mix and Barrington's vocal skills are out of this world. Check it out!
Alton Ellis
Sunday Coming [LP]
(Studio One/Heartbeat) If you combine the foundation reggae label Studio One with one of the greatest voices from Jamaica, Alton Ellis, you get an excellent reissue album called Sunday Coming. This LP has solid arrangements and classic soulful lyrics from the legendary Alton Ellis. Other Studio One/Heartbeat Alton Ellis releases include Alton And Hortense Ellis, and Cry Tough.

JUNGLE is undoubtedly London's music, and the UK influence, in visiting DJs, in imported mix tapes, in transatlantic DJ friendships, has been vital. However, Toronto's hardcore scene has also grown through the efforts of several key local figures. The name most frequently mentioned is that of Neil, 'Dr No', a British ex-pat who was one of the first to play hardcore in Toronto.
"Dr No was the first jungle DJ in the city," remembers Rick Bullen, AKA DJ Medicine Muffin, another pioneer. "He's a really charismatic character and he got a lot of people interested." And thanks to Toronto's enlightened community radio stations, Dr No's influence was strong. With another Toronto veteran Malik X, and Scottish progressive house DJ Mark Oliver, he had long presented a show called 'Radio London', highlighting UK music.
From rare groove and acid house onwards, whatever was happening in Britain was played on Radio London, reaching the city's population of DJs, both actual and would-be. After setting the game in motion, however, these first-footers then left the main arena. Malik X retired just as hardcore began mutating into jungle. Dr No also quit spinning and became Toronto's most celebrated MC.
Two DJs, Rick Medicine Muffin and Jungle PhD followed Dr No's lead with a local radio show called Hard Drive, highlighting hardcore's further evolution (they also opened a short-lived specialist record store together). Both are now local headliners. Rick's set at Delirium shows an affection for the mellower, more avant garde side of drum and bass.
"People are coming over to something new," he
Page 10

declares. "Demand for records has rocketed, even the radio is playing jungle. [Top station Energy 108 has nine jungle tracks on their playlist despite the notorious conservatism of Canadian commercial radio.] It's just the beginning for North America." And along with several others on the scene Rick is currently working on production, giving Toronto jungle a vinyl presence.
Other projects: Sniper is heading back to the UK to remix a track he made with Phantasy: 'The Syrous Anthem'. Robbie Lisi has plans for a Syrous label, and Medicine Muffin, along with DJ Marcus, another leading DJ and the driving force behind Delirium, is finishing a three-track EP. In addition, Canadian K-Tel-style imprint Quality has licensed songs for a 30-track obvious hits jungle compilation, to be marketed in conjunction with Energy 108.
With all this activity, there is even talk of Toronto developing its own sound. Sniper sees this as inevitable, "But it'll have a lot to do with what London's doing," he cautions.
In the next few months, things will continue to grow. There are the parties of course (and right now the X-Static calendar shows raves planned for every weekend until March). Knowledge, a weekly Friday nighter started by Syrous promises to take the vibe into a club environment, encouraging an older crowd and a more mature approach.
And then there's the big secret: It's out now: Robbie and Syrous are opening a specialist jungle record store, in conjunction with London's Lucky Spin, sometime in '95. With eager anticipation, Robbie describes the idea: "We just need a new centrepoint for jungle music. For it to grow we need something like this to happen."

"THE MUSIC INDUSTRY HAS LITTLE TO DO WITH MUSIC."
BUT why Toronto? Why should jungle should take root here when it's fighting for breath in the rest of North America? Possible factors: for many Canadians Britain is the old country, so contacts are strong between the two; because of Canada's Commonwealth status, British records are cheaper to import here than American ones. Another reason is generational: North American kids are looking to something newer, faster and harder to distance themselves from the long established hip hop and house club background of their older brothers and sisters.
As Alan of Pleasure Force points out: "That's what gets them into the scene, because that type of music is different from anything else." Rick Medicine Muffin agrees, adding that a lot of the kids in Toronto's rave scene came from a rock or alternative background. "They latched onto the speed of jungle and its early abrasiveness," he believes. "They're into it for rebellious reasons."
Jungle here has a very white and youthful appearance. Certainly the crowds showing up to dance include far fewer black faces than the people playing the music. Toronto's huge Caribbean community has so far had very little to do with jungle's outbreak. Because it gets

records direct from Jamaica, the dancehall scene is yet to merge with jungle the way it has in London. Some feel that the reggae/hip hop crowds here are too closed-minded to embrace jungle. Others argue that it's only a matter of time, that these people are just not hearing it since they've traditionally steered clear of the rave scene.
But now that Jamaica, influenced by London, is producing its own version of the jungle sound, Toronto's ragga DJs will start hearing jungle rhythms in their Caribbean imports and should become far more receptive (and as well as the jungle B-sides of ragga tracks, there are now a number of 7" jungle dub-plates of Jamaican origin in circulation).
Marcus's DJ roots are in hip hop and reggae. He has plans to market mix tapes to the dancehall massive, concentrating purely on ragga influenced tracks. "I've been able to corner a few people and play them jungle soundclash and they just love it." His other plan, and here he almost bursts with excitement, is to enter a jungle float in the procession at Caribana, Toronto's Caribbean Carnival.
"It's getting a lot bigger," concludes Robbie. "The parties are getting better. We're throwing everything at it we've got. It's exciting."
