Interview
TAYLA AGE: 21 LIVES: WATFORD WHY DID I START? I was always fascinated by DJing when I was young. So I saved up bought some Technics when I was 16 or 17 and just practiced. But the original intention wasn't to play in clubs. I just loved mixing and was quite content to be doing it in my bedroom. Then I went on holiday to Ibiza and took some records with me hoping to maybe get some work at one of the clubs out there, anyway I managed to ponce a set at a club called Summon, had a blindin laugh, and came back with the enthusiasm to try and get work over here. The first club I played over here was Milwawkees for Murray from Dreamscape and have gradually built up work from there. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST BIG BREAK? My first big break was at Dreamscape 4 at the beginning of '92, in Milton Keynes. It was a memorable night for me. WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT THE SCENE AND WHERE DO YOU SEE IT GOING? For me personally, I prefer the deep, ambient drum and bass style of hardcore, that tends to be what I find the more sensibly produced and well thought about our music which 90% of the time shines through and I enjoy seeing that very much. As to where I see it going - I think it is hard to predict which way a scene will go, I mean if good ideas and different ideas are being used the music will progress, but I think possibly a few records that were released last year which had chart success have disillusioned some people as to exactly what this music is all about. They are confusing their ideas which consequently creates bad music. HAVE YOU PLAYED ABROAD - IF SO ANY MORE PLANS? As I said earlier, I played in Ibiza in '91. I have no immediate plans to play abroad at the moment, I want to concentrate my efforts over here first. WHERE DO YOU LIKE PLAYING AND WHY? The best club I have played is Quest in Wolverhampton, because of the system, the old warehouse style venue and a very sensible crowd. Pandemonium at the Institute in Birmingham, any Dreamscape event, World Dance, Arcadia in the Isle of Shepey, Lazerdrome, Sterns, Reincarnation. HAVE YOU MADE ANY TUNES? Yes I have made 2 records to date. The first track I did was with Satin Storm called Let's Get Together which was released last summer. I also have another track called Bang the Drums (which is currently out on dubplate) to be released on Good Looking Records within the next month. WHAT DO YOU SEE YOURSELF DOING IN THE FUTURE? I am currently in the process of getting some equipment together and starting my own studio as I wish to pursue engineering and producing my own work and possibly for others, that is what I would like to see myself doing in the future. As for DJing, I can never see myself stopping. I am always going to want to play my favourite records to a crowd and there is nothing else that gives me the buzz that DJing has. WHAT PRODUCERS DO YOU RATE? I rate any producer that sits down and puts a sensible amount of time and thought into their work. Too many people rush their tracks and it shows. But the people who I respect the most are the those like a Guy Called Gerald, simply because I feel that nobody else is producing the standard of work that he is. Also LTJ Bukem for his originality and the way he arranges his tracks there are also people like Bodysnatch, CMC, and Primary Source. WHAT DJS DO YOU RATE? LTJ Bukem (respect Dan), Fabio and the rest of the Groove Connection Crew, all Djs on my agency (Fluid Motion), Kid Bachelor, Eddie Richards, DJ Ron, Peshay (Hello Mate), Trace and all of the bedroom DJs out there who are trying to get theirs and helping to keep the scene alive. ANY SHOUTS? All at the Good Looking Stables, Danny, Paul, Chalky, Long Boy, Vicky, Perry, Scott, Dean, Cass, Bowi, Chicken Mid, and Danny Rachael. TAYLA'S TOP TEN: 1 LTJ Bukem (Music), 2 Remix of Feel good (Omni Trio), 3 New 12" from Bukem & Peshay (Dubplate), 4 Oxford Hardcore (The End), 5 Scott & Keith (Reinforced), 6 Bukem (Enchanted), 7 Life on Mars (song you're about to hear), 8 Peshay (Reinforced), 9 A Guy Called Gerald (White), 10 Tayla (Bang the Drums) PAGE 4

"It's Nice Up There, But It's A Long Way Down!" IT'S NICE UP THERE, BUT IT'S A LONG WAY DOWN! For thousands of years we have all been using various chemicals and substances to change the way we feel, and like the dedicated chemist that is within us all, we keep on refining. Surely, if we can have unleaded petrol we can have safer drugs? Like 'No Poll Tax', 'Jobs For All', and an exciting day at the Job Centre - nice thought shame about the outcome. Because when so many people are willing to try the latest 'roller coaster, mind expanding, completely safe Super Drug' the quality, along with a good hot curry goes right down the toilet. So hold on real tight and just hope that you can find yourself the next day. (Some people are still looking!) Of all the drugs that are available, it is the stimulants that have proven most popular in recent times, it's a case of whizz, bang, go, go, go!! ECSTACY In 1914 MDMA was invented, that's METHYLENEDIOXYMETH AMPHETAMINE (quick, Ma, pass the dictionary). In the 60's & 70's Psychotherapists used it to help people get in touch with themselves in less time than if they received counselling alone. Eventually, of course, it reached our tiny island and got onto the streets. Because of th enourmous profits to be made by diluting it with other substances and chemicals, quality went out of the window. So now you pays your money, takes your chance and hope for the best. Quality can even vary in the same batch, so several friends buying off the same dealer might find only one of them has a bad time. Aoid mixing you drugs. E is related to speed. Whizzing is one thing, rapid weight loss and paranoia are some things you don't need. Once you start using more to get the same effect - STOP. Either you are building up a tolerance or their snidey E's. Some people started with just 1/2 E, then 1 then 2. Some of them haven't used for over a year and are still getting panic attacks, anxiety attacks, it's not worth it. REMEMBER THE GOLDEN E RULE "LESS IS MORE". SPEED Picture the scene: Patient: "Doctor, I want to lose some weight." Doctor: "Certainly, take these pills. You'll lose weight and have more energy." Over 25 years ago, this used to happen in doctors surgeries all over Britain. Just i case you are wondering, do you can't get them anymore. Speed on the streets now is usually only, at best, 10% pure. That means that 90% of the speed you're taking is an unknown quantity. Basically, speed stimulates your central nervous system. This is responsible for the extra energy and confidence you feel. Because it cuts down you appetite, if you start using regularly, weight loss could be one of the first danger signs. WATCH YOUR WEIGHT! Also it increases your confidence, so some people start feeling confused and paranoid. THERE IS NO SAFE AMOUNT! If you notice that you need to use more to get the same effect (ie tolerence) don't think you're invincible to the problems. You're not, you just think you are! Even people who don't inject their drugs can have severe problems. "Every one's after me." Ecstacy is related to speed, so be careful and don't overdo it. Use one or the other, not both. If you do, you might just find out how to really panic in half the time. Research shows by the age of 15, 1/3 people have tried 1 illegal drug, with speed cannabis and LSD being the most popular. It doesn't matter how old or young you are you can still get busted. Never hold drugs for someone else. It's you who will spend the night in the cells. If you do use drugs and get busted GET A SOLICITOR, and it wouldn't do any harm to ring your LOCAL DRUG SERVICE. Lifeline began in 1971, and each year sees over 1,000 people, 70% under the age of 25. We provide a telephone advice line and we also see people. We also provide support to parents (DON'T PANIC, THEY NEED INFO AS WELL). We produce a range of mainly comic based drugs info. FEELING GOOD FEELING BAD WIDE AWAKE - TIRED HAPPY - DEPRESSED ENERGETIC - LETHARGIC NOT HUNGRY - RAVENOUS STRONG - WEAK WE ARE AT: LIFELINE MANCHESTER, 101/103 OLDHAM STREET, MANCHESTER M4 1LW TELEPHONE: 061 839 2054 MONDAY - FRIDAY 9.30 AM - 5.00 PM PAGE 5

Interview
ANDY C How long ago did you get into the scene? I've been into it since it started. My sister, Sarah, got me into it. How long have you been making trax? A couple of years now, I've pressed about 15 different trax to date. How long have you been DJing? About 2 years, I played at M25 rave earlier this year, Club Elevation, Club Booyakka, and I'm resident at Club Telepathy at the Wax Club & Cyndicut 100.4 FM - 6-8 pm Saturdays. What are you pursuing more at the moment, DJing or making tunes? Tunes are my priority because I want to build 'RAM' into a respected label, but I've always wanted to get into DJing. Do you aim to create a different style in your tunes? The recent 'Origin Unknown' track (31 seconds) was different, that was more of a groove than just a straight forward banging attempt at a hardcore record, but I'm into darkness at the moment. Do you think the music side of it is going to progress or stop? I reckon there's going to be a lot more talent and originality put into it, less and less of just putting a few samples together and chucking a track out. I think there's a lot more talent and effort going into trax at the moment. With the state of record sales at the moment people aren't buying as many records so the ones that talent's gone into are selling. What other music tastes have you got? Funk and I also like house. These two influenced my music style a lot and I've always liked the breakbeat element with all the mashed up beats. What producers do you rate at the moment? People that don't rush their records and also try to make them a bit different. Tell us a bit about your label Ram Records. It consists of myself and Ant Miles, we've got a production company called Desired State Productions. Last year we released a track by Desired State called 'Dance the Dream' that was on the Out of Romford Label but all future material will be on Ram. We also produce stuff for Deep Seven Records. We Try to aim for different styles for example, 'Origin Unknown' is like a Jungle Dark Style, Desired State is on more of a lighter tip, Andy C is in-between and we have a forthcoming release which has more of a heavier style. We also co produced the new Elevation EP on Ram. Did you expect 'Origin Unknown' to get as big as it has? When we made the B-Side (31 seconds) it was like a personal thing, we like it but we didn't feel that other people would catch on to what we were getting into with the track. On the A-Side was 'The Touch' and when we promo'd it, the buzz about it was unbelievable, I think it was the 'Long Dark Tunnel' vocal that clinched it, along with the rolling bassline. All future 'Origin Unknown' trax will still be in that style - we use different acts for different styles of hardcore. What DJs do you rate? Randall, Brockie (Kool FM), Fabio and JJ Frost (The Crowd Controller), Swann E. What MCs do you rate? MC MC, Stevie Hypa, Come Up Crew, MC Reality and MC Dett. What other interests have you got? Just going out and having a good time, I like to enjoy the ravescene as well as work with it. What's the most embarrassing moment you've ever had? I was playing at a club one time and as I've turned around to get a tune I trod on all the power leads, pulling them from the sockets leaving the place silent for 10 minutes. Any last shouts? Ant at the Anthill, Scott, Elevation Crew, Sting Productions, Ivan & Everyone at The Morning After, Danny B, Winston, Dave, Danny D (Boogie Times and Sub Base). Paul (Out of Romford), Martin & Nikki (Jumpstart), Daz & Rhythm (Cyndicut 100.4 fm), and everyone else - I know too many to mention!! PAGE 6

Interview
SIMON BASSLINE SMITH Is Simon Smith your real name? Yes. Lives: Derby Age: 28 How long have you been into the rave scene? I got into the house scene about 8 years ago and I've been DJ'ing for 10 years now. What music were you playing before house? I first started off as a soul DJ, but I was also playing a lot of Detroit house. Why did you choose to be a 'rave' DJ? I was into the music way before the ravescene itself actually started, it was just a case of me already being there. I spent 3 years in Tenerife, that was the main place I started playing a lot of firin house. Do you think the music is better now people have virtually stopped sampling everyone's ideas? I've always been able to go out I get good tunes, I know that there was a time when there was an awful lot of rubbish out there but quite frankly, I wasn't buying it and I wasn't playing it. I've always been able to get what I class good records. The records that are in my box now, are good and there are records that were in my box a year ago are good.I think there was a lot of people out there about a year ago that weren't really putting a lot of thought into their tracks, but there was still a lot who were! What are your favourite clubs to play at? Paradise Club and Elevation at Roller Express where there's always a good atmosphere, good music and a good crowd. What do you think you'd be doing if you weren't DJ'ing? Before I started taking it really seriously I was in a good job. I've always enjoyed DJ'ing so it was the ultimate when I could spend all my time DJ'ing and not have to worry about getting up for work. I've not ad a normal job for about 6 or 7 years now. You've made some trax do you want to pursue that as much as DJing or keep it on a level where you're doing both? I want to carry on DJ'ing and also put a lot of time into making tunes, I'll go wherever that takes me. What part of the country do you think you get the best crowd response? I think I get a good response wherever I go. I try to please people and compromise, there's a lot of DJ's out there who are probably getting a lot of work, but I don't really feel that some of them are taking things forward. What DJ's do you rate? Grooverider, Fabio, LTJ Bukem, JJ Frost, Mickey Finn. What's the best event you've ever played at? Best event has got to be Perception at Wisbech because it was the first event of its size and people flocked from everywhere, there was a complete roadblock - it was massive. What do you think about the current trend of playing dubplates? I don't really want to contradict myself because I've got plates in my bag at the moment but I think it's got good and bad points. Its clear and obvious what they are for and sooner or later the tracks do get released but I prefer mixing with 12" vinyl than 10" dubplates. Have you ever played on any stations? I've played on radio quite a few times over the years, I also did some radio work over in Tenerife. What style of music do you prefer to play? I prefer tunes that are on more of a musical tip rather than a noisy tip. What are your favourite all time tunes? Far too many to mention! I like lots of classic souls and house tunes. It is a bit harder to find classics in the rave scene. Have you got a manager? Yes, Caroline at FLuid Motion looks after my diary. Mrs Smith manages me! What was your first big break onto the ravescene? The Perception at Wisbech 1990. Did you find it hard to work your way up? It is hard for anyone in any field to work their way up. I just want to do the job I enjoy and hopefully people enjoy the music I play. To be acknowledged, to me, is the main reason for it all. PAGE 8

I saw your advert saying I could Express my views or opinions in your magazine so I decided to write in. The scene at the moment is kickin, but there is a lot of confusion about. Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to a summer of non-stop raving, but I would like to air my views somewhere where people would listen. A big problem with the scene is it's popularity, this is a good thing on the whole, but it has's bad points; Hoards of kids taking all the flyers from your local shop before you get there and a much worse consequence, promoters seeing the money making potential in putting on a rave and ripping us off. This however is dyeing off I'm very glad to say. In reference to the music itself, people are blaming the junglism movement. Junglism absolutely wiped Techno off the ravescene last summer and was purely a victim of bad timing. As the popularity thing took over at the same time Jungle has been related to bad times. In honesty, nine hours or so of breakbeats can sometimes be boring. Basically a philosophy such as that of Knite Force records is called for: "Does it matter that a record is Techno, Jungle, Dark, Hardcore, Happy House or Acid? Isn't it important that the record is good, whatever the category?" And another great quote from Grooverider, "It's all House after all." By wiping Jungle out, tracks as Hardcore Heaven, Livin' in Darkness would be thrown down the toilet. I not one of those people saying how wicked the scene was in '89 or 18 months ago because that will do no good. Just look to the future and enjoy. Respect Labrynth, Orange,Kenny Ken, Grooverider, Rabbit City, Knite Force and of course Frenzic and the crew. Jake Phillips, Berkshire. Lost - Elevatoin 24 July. Scrap Notebook - Reward offered.
