Well what's happened to summer? Two weeks of sun and then the rain started coming down and down. Lucky for us that the club scene is doing so well or we'd all be up to our knees in mud every Saturday night. Even though the British weather has lived up to its reputation once more, we're glad to see you're still smiling out there. This month's Atmosphere continues its journey into the underground dance music scene, to bring you interviews with Donovan 'Bad Boy' Smith, MC Reality, The Reincarnation Crew and that's just for starters. We've also got reviews from last months Bank Holiday Madness, all the usual news and the country's most happening tunes. Hopefully the weather will get better this month, but even if it doesn't, just remember to keep smiling!

Interview
MC Reality
Age - 20 • Lives - West London
How did you get into it all? I've been into it now for about 3 years, I suppose, me and one of my mates were just sitting in my bedroom one time listening to some music. I just started chatting a few lyrics and I just though yeah. Why don't I take this a bit more serious. So I did, for a while then I started working with DJ Phantasy then I just started rolling on the scene, then I started working at the Lazerdrome.
Whereabouts do you work now apart from Lazerdrome? I work with DJ Gemini wherever he plays and with Phantasy. I've played at nearly all the major parties with Phantasy.
Do you want to pursue it more? Yeah, I want to be a top MC, THE MC.
What do you think THE MC should have? Not to be rude to other people, you get some MCs that are good MCs but because they are good MCs they blank out other people and they get on like they're the original dons and things like that. So for me I reckon being able to get on with people, not killing off the music too much always let a DJ play through his set without killing it off too much.
Who do you rate? I rate MCs such as the Juiceman, MCGQ (kickin it MC), Conrad and MC Peak - that's about it..
Do you find it hard to get new work? Yeah, because being an MC - its not as easy as a DJ, becuase a DJ is the one that people are after. I mean an MC just makes up the bit at the end of the night. Its a lot harder for an MC to get work unless you are an established MC then it's no problem.
What do you think is the purpose of an MC? To me its to get the crowd going, letting them know who DJs in the place and just to keep the vibe rollin.
What DJs styles to you rate? DJ Hype's is a style that I rate to the bone because he's fast, sometimes he doubles up on tunes and the way he deals with that is just BAD. Randall for the way he just rides the tunes he never really mixes them up just rides the tunes across and you get to hear the tunes. Gemini case's he's a ruffkut mixer cutting it wise and Phantasy. I'd say those are the 4 I really rate for styles.
What do you think of the London Scene compared to the rest of the country? The London Scene I think is too moody, too many people are in it just to deal with drugs and act like rudeboys but when you go up north and places like that people are like old time ravers they go there to rave, go there to blow their whistles, put on their white gloves and get down to it and to me that's what parties should be like.
Any funny stories? I was with Phantasy in Cambridge I think and it was a night when the clocks went back. We went on an hour before before time. We went on at 12 when it was meant to be 1, and we've bust in through the set and Jo Jo rock came up to me and said 'You're not supposed to be on' he's gone 'Yeah, we are on' I said 'no the clocks have been put back' so we had to step down and wait for our set.
Any last shouts? Gemini, Lazerdrome Cru (Sonia, Cliff and Probe), Kyle, Angela & all Cru & Toots & all Cru.

NEWS & VIEWS...
Following the denigration of the good name of Hardcore in certain dance mags, we thought it was about time the record was set straight. Hardcore is the name given to the breakbeat style of rave music. Rave music is the music played at large one-off youth culture gatherings that feature complex audio-visual entertainment. One of the features of these gatherings is a large incidence of stimulant abuse. The people under the influence demand music which reflects how they feel. Music with power and energy is what they need.
These events are a compromise of morality and are therefore run by hard-nosed businessmen. They choose DJ's who have won the hearts of the kids they entertain and who can deliver the goods.
Club music (aka garage and house) is music designed for and played in clubs. It is necessarily slower and less complicated than it could be as a large number of its listeners will not be under the influence of stimulants.
If you want to make money in the dance industry then it is recommended to make this style of music as there are more club DJ's and more clubs than raves. You are also more likely to get chart positions and peer acceptance.
Hardcore breakbeat is the style of music that has been, is and will be played at the major raves. It is complex and overpowering and definitely not boring although a lot of it is currently uninspiring. This situation has developed as a result of a lack of risk taking by promoters, they rely on the select group of name DJ's rather than, for example, a set of demo tapes from up and coming DJ's.
The only real thing wrong with rave is that the people who make the music are guilty of sitting on their laurels. It has always been easy to sell with no promotions and therefore the dance press are usually the last to hear about the big tunes. There is a sell-as-they-are-pressed policy which means that chart positions do not reveal true sales figures. As many as 10,000 can be sold of a tune without a chart position. Cases in point; I Need Your Lovin - NRG, The Fire - Noise Factory
British Breakbeat is a style that has been sold across the world and has helped keep this country on the world dance map. Negative publicity is extremely prejudiced and irresponsible and is a feature of lack of journalistic professionalism.

REINCARNATION AT CRYSTAL PALACE 29/5/93
This event promised to kick off going by the line up and Reincarnation's history of events in Herne Bay. So off I went getting there early while they were still setting up examining the venue and thinking to my self 'not bad'. Well I was right, it filled up a bit slow to start off with but it soon got warm. With top quality DJ appearances JJF, Fabio, Hype, and Phantasy playing the best, ripping the crowd apart. Even at 8 am in the morning they were still jumpin. But what made the night was the PA by SOR they severely rocked everyone with a brilliant performance by both dancers and artists. The production was of a high standard with an excellent light show. There was a good vibe and no trouble. During the night I approached the promoters Mickey and Paddy and asked them a few questions.
Did they have any more events planned at CP? August 14th and December 18th 1993.
Has the event gone how you wanted or expected it to? It is our first event out of Kent and we were strangers to Londoners, they haven't heard of us before but the event has gone how we expected, we are very pleased with the results although we could have got some more people in. We are negotiating with Bromley Council for a bigger Capacity, they said to us if every rave was as organised as us they wouldn't have any worries.
Would you make any changes to the night? Yes, we would improve it by increasing the number of metal detectors to speed up entry. One other thing the walkie talkies are too heavy they pull my trousers down! (comment by Mickey).
Would you like to say anything else? Yes, Reincarnation is the longest lasting most successful rave, we have more than 6,000 members in the 691 club. We are celebrating our 21st rave. We've been holding events since 1st August 1991 in Herne Bay and everyone has been a success.
During the night I also approached the events manager Mark to get his view on the event.
Is Reincarnation the first rave that has been held here? No, 2 years ago the Bliss organisation held an event but that was it.
Do you think the night has been a success? Yes, we have had no problems we are very happy with the organisation and have no hesitation in having another one here. RESPECT TO REINCARNATION FOR A WICKED NIGHT OUT. RED
RAGE
Arrived at what used to be the best Thursday night out in town. Not As many people as expected and I think the old vibe that made rage so good before was absent. Domonic playing old classics and techno till 12.30 then Fabio and Grooverider showed just why they are the country's number 1 DJs. Watch out for Pure's other events at Busby's and at Astoria (With Crazy Club). Big shout to Flying Cru. FRENZIC
ORANGE AT THE HIPPODROME
I've got to admit it was my first time I've been here, but it won't be the last. This has got to be one of the best venues I've ever seen, purpose built and with a killer in house sound. About 1,500 people were crammed in the arena, on the balconies, platforms, down the corridors, it had to be seen to be believed. A novel touch was the thirty or so TV screens in the entrance hall and outside the venue which allowed you to see all the action inside while you queued outside. The crowd was good and the DJs well chosen. Keep it up Orange Club.

AWOL AT THE MOVIES
The famous AWOL machine rolls on. This time visiting Bagleys Film Studios near the heart of London, rather than Ministry which they had outgrown. Bagleys is like an old warehouse and was booming with the sound of Eskimo Noises Rigs. The music was varied with the darker side of hardcore going down the best. Notable performances from Micky Finn, Kenny Ken, Cool Hand Flex, Darren Jay & Randall who supplied the frantic last hour. Respect to all Paradise Crew, disrespect to the Bagley's Staff who killed the music without letting the DJs playing one last track. It was twenty past six but it could have gone on and on and on..
ELEVATION 19/6/93 ROLLER EXPRESS
For those who didn't turn up at the payback, you all missed out. The atmosphere was amazing, the sound (well there was nothing wrong with that), and the lights and lazers were the best I've seen for a long time. All DJs played well with excellent sets by both Carl Cox and GE Real. Security were very polite and handled the large crowd very well. Well worth £11 for a wicked night out. See you at the next payback. Respect to Elevation FRANK N

Interview
DONOVAN 'BADBOY' SMITH
HOW DID YOU GET INTO DJING ?
I've been DJing for about 16 years. back then I was mainly playing soul and then the 'Farley' time (Farley Jackmaster etc) which is when I met Simon 'Bassline' Smith. I got a lot of inspiration from him and from watching him DJ. I've always wanted to DJ not just be a rave DJ but just DJing in general. From then on it just went from there.
WHAT GOT YOU INTO RAVE MUSIC ?
The atmosphere and the friendliness of the crowd. This scene is totally different, some clubs you go to are just pure attitude, wether it's soul, reggae or even rock. I've always listened to all types of music.
YOU'VE BEEN DJ 16 YEARS - SO HOW OLD ARE YOU?
I'm Old!!
SO WHEN DID YOU START DJING IN THE HOUSE SCENE?
Gospel Truth is I have been into Rave 2 1/2 years now. I was playing at the Brunel Rooms every Friday and Saturday mixing Soul, some of the real old rough stuff, a bit of reggae and just about everything really, just to keep everybody happy. The Brunel Rooms started to play Rave bringing in Jack Frost, Brian G, Carl Cox. Just seeing the atmosphere from that made me start getting into raving itself.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF GOING IN THE SCENE?
I just want to be respected as a good DJ so everyone can say yeah, Donovan played and was good.
DOES THAT MATTER MORE TO YOU THAN BEING THE BIGGEST NAME ON THE CIRCUIT?
Much more. If people go to hear me play, I like to now I satisfied them, that's the main thing. You can't just play for one sort of crowd like your friends or a certain jungle crowd, you've got to play right across the board. Some people think rave DJ's play nothing but dub-plates, because that's how it goes these days.
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT DUB PLATES ON THE SCENE?
I ain't dissing a dub-plate crowd, it is just getting a bit out of hand now. they need to slow it down. Not even the punters can keep up with it nowadays. that is why there is such a decline in people buying records, because they can't keep up. Not everyone is employed and can afford to buy so much music that comes out every week. Just slow it down. Some of them are being made up to a year before release.
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
The South-West, Gloucester. A small West Country town.
WHAT IS THE SCENE LIKE ROUND THAT WAY?
Rubbish, but I tell you what, that is where a lot of the main Raves have happened. Like Castle Morton, Fantasia is from Gloucestershire and so is Obsession. Saying it is rubbish, it is rubbish in that from where I am, nothing happens whatsoever.
HAVE YOU MADE ANY OTHER TRACKS OTHER THAN OBSESSION?
I have just finished one with Basement Records with DJ Ron which is called Ruff and the Smooth. It is a double A side, one side being Art of Intelligence and the other side called Anthem which is supposed to be "the bollocks". Should be out in mid July and it's good - believe me!
HOW DO YOU SEE THE MUSIC PROGRESSING?
I reckon it is going to be everything combined into one. A bit of the progressive side of acid where it is really nice and mellow, then the hard side, a bit to keep it rolling, but it will all just combine into one and it is going to sound a lot better for it! At the moment it is going in too many directions. It's like a big tree, all branching out. You can't even class Garage like House now. They are classing it as two different sorts of music. To me house and garage are the same thing. It's a happy beat, happy and nice.
AND TECHNO?
I rate techno to the max. It will always be there!
BUT WILL IT TAKE OVER?
No it won't. You are always going to have your minority. It is just for 'head fuck;' people. People say places like Amsterdam and Germany are strictly Techno, but the point is, the only reason they are strictly Techno is that they have not heard of Jungle or the Dark Side or the good, good Piano stuff. They are crying out for it over there but they can't get it. People want Techno there because it is nothing but Techno. More of our DJ's should play over there!
HAVE YOU PLAYED ABROAD?
Yes, Australia. It is mental over there!
ANY MORE PLANS TO TRAVEL?
Yes, I am supposed to be playing over there again soon. but as of yet no definite plans have been made. Over there it is how a rave should be, just like when raves started. The music is so hard for them to come by that they love it when big DJ's come over. I have heard that Carl Cox and Easy Groove have had the best reception so far. I have also got France in August and there is something in the pipeline very soon for the States.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE PLACES TO PLAY AND WHY?
Milwakees for the atmosphere. Nice friendly club feeling which is what raves should be. the club feel, not this commercial rubbish. Sterns which is mind blowing. A club in the South-West called Gold Diggers which is hard. There is a lot of peekers down there, but respect to them. They know how to hype up a DJ. Payback Elevation will kick everything into touch barr Obsession. Quest and Paradise. You can't forget them two, either.
IS THE THING EVERYONE LOVES ABOUT PARADISE?
It is just bad. The DJ feels like he is wanted there. Some crowds make you feel like you are not wanted, but at the Paradise Club no matter who you are, they make you feel welcome in there, no matter what you play as well.
HOW MANY RECORDS DO YOU GO THROUGH EACH WEEK - BUY, GET SENT ETC?
If I told you how many I get sent alone, it's a joke. 70% is rubbish and the rest is alright. I started off spending about £120 a week on records and this has gone right down to about £25 a week.
WHERE DO YOU SHOP?
Lucky Spin, Record Basemem and Black Market. Just them three, they are the major ones for me.
WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE YOU STARTED DJING?
I used to dance, like Jazz Contemporary. I used to be in a dance troop called Images, I went to a lot of discos, dancing every night. I just loved the music scene.
WAS THE MONEY GOOD?
Page 11
Interview
What dancing? I never got paid anything. I just did it to try and get known. If you do something, you do it to get known, no matter what it is.
DO YOU THINK THE SCENE IS DYING OR IS IT A COMBINATION OF THE RECESSION AND OTHER FACTORS?
The recession, plus a lot of people are fed up being ripped of at commercial raves. That is why I have always said, bring it back to the club scene. Where no-one's out to make too much money, just to make sure everyone is having a good time.
DO YOU THINK IT WILL EVER HAPPEN NOW OR HAS THE ROT SET IN?
Yes it will, it's going right back now. Believe me.
HAVE YOU EVER BEEN RIPPED OF IN THE BUSINESS?
Loads of times. There is times when I have been to clubs where there is nobody there and I played thinking it will be alright, but at the end of the night there is no sign of the promoter to give me my money. I am not even going to bother naming those places because they know who they are. I have even been given forged money. I trusted this person and in the morning when I counted my money I found it was forged £20 notes, because how can you prove who gave it to you when you didn't count it on the night. Things are starting to get better now. People think a DJ's life is easy. It is very stressful and certainly a lot more than just going out at the weekends and getting paid.
DOES IT MAKE YOUR LIFE EASIER HAVING A MANAGER?
Yes, certainly. Sometimes you can just forget about it through the week and the Thursday night you get told where you have got to play and that's it, you just go there.
YOU ARE PLAYING A LOT MORE IN LONDON NOW. WHY HAVE YOU STARTED TO PLAY MORE DOWN THIS WAY?
The reason I am in London is mainly because of Caroline (manager from Fluid Motion). She has got a lot of influence in London itself. She only started up her agency a year ago and what she has for me in that year is unbelievable. Before I met her no-one knew me in London, but the people took to me straight away and it's gone mad ever since.
DO YOU PREFER PLAYING IN OR OUT OF LONDON?
I love London, but you can't beat the South-West. The maddest crowd I have ever come across. You can play anything you want and they are just there.
ANY LAST WORDS?
Big shout to everybody, especially all the Fluid Motion crowd, they know who they are. Gideon, Mensa, Dez, Mickey, Funky, Paul, Paul, Paul, Dez, (Gerald Quest) (Big Shout) (Chris Fusion), All Groove Connection, Big shout to the Elevation Crew.

FRENZIC: "Straight from D'Underground stables comes the much talked about Mars by Flex due out in a few weeks with a remix following, plenty of rolling drumbeats check it out. Two new releases due from Reel to Reel Mix to the Max III being my fave and the Stooge EP. Krome and Time's new EP on Suburban Base should prove to be as popular as their designer clippers (one for the Hardcore Cru). Using some wicked vocals from days gone is the Erogenous zone from Trouble on Vinyl well worth checking out. After causing a storm with Bass Logic and Origin Unknown Andy C's new release the Elevation EP on Ram Records follows in the same footsteps with catchy B-Lines and rollin breakbeats. From the Cru that brought you Citadel of Kaos 1-4 comes Take me to the Top on just another label wicked hardcore track for the jump around massive. Also the Mole the Dipper EP on the Bear Necessities label is a four tracker which is well worth a listen. So too is the Jack Horner & DJ Pulse track on Creative Wax (one to cause a rumble in ya speaker). Bass Ballistics is the next release from formation wit plenty of mashed up beats and some wicked styles. Sacred's remix of Do It Together is due out soon, set to be as big as the original with some wicked strings and the all time favourite London Massive Break. Ghost from Rufige Cru has been mashing up dance floors for weeks now with the Terminator remix on the Flip. Last three of my selection this month are feel it by Peshay, Citadel of Kaos 5 with a four tracker with various styles and the new Origination EP - due soon" 0702 344384
RED: Record of the month has got to go to the remix of Foul Play Vol 3, two killer tracks. Tango's new release on Formation called Future Followers, there is also a remix knocking about, quality tunes. Omni Trio Vol 2 on Movin Shadow, wicked, wicked, wicked put together piece of vinyl. DJ Lee on Impact records another good rating record. Two pieces of vinyl out on Ram Records, Andy C and Origin Unknown - remix about as well, if you haven't heard these then considering they are a few weeks old you may as well stop collecting the records and keep to the flyers. New track out on Face Records, check it out. White label called SMD samplin the congress piano and Bizarre Inc, a lively, jumpin crowd goer record. On the lighter tip THC - Sunshine from Slipmatt & Lime on Awesome Records, using the original Roy Anders sample, Happy Track also on Awesome is the remix of MC Jay J. Two more releases on Liquid Wax Recordings - Summer's Here by DJ Phantasy & Robert Chimiel, maintaining the originality and quality still, the other being Bass-ic Instinct, finishin off with two other tracks to listen to Ironik on Deep Seven and Lemon D - Toxic Rhythm EP.
DUBRUNNER: "I kick off this months selection with Elevation and Desired State on Ram records and Foulplays latest offering (5? Records) both of which deserve a long listen. Reel 2 Reel return after a long break with the excellent DSP Scrooge EP and Mix to the Max 3 EP. Both well worth the wait. On the creative tip we have Intenses excellent remix of Tim Taylors Project One (ULR), Jack Horner & Pulse one Creative Wax the Whitehouse Crew on Siblimal and Oedipus complex on Soapbar all of which are Ruff. Reinforced have taken Manix's heading to the light a step further with a remix Ep and also released thelong awaited 'Young head' EP. Bay-B-Kanes inevitable remix of Hello Darkness was well worth the wait as was the new 6 track EP from Pro-One featuring superb Cool Hand Flex remixes of some of their previous work. Speaking of Flex check out his Hey Yeah tune form De Underground which is well worth every cent. Vicious Crew on Stomp Records is an insanely dark track and kemets latest, the Free and Able EP takes their usual Ragg/Dark style a step further. My Track of the month goes to the Paradise EP, 4 tracks from the creators of Old Trainers, buy on sight and shoud be available soon. Dubrunner signing off" 0850 410307

With Guest DJ Chart by Dean Savonne (Kiss FM - Thrill Me - Release the Pressure)
There are a few interesting things this month Neneh Cherry is back with M-A-W mixes, a great piece of vocal garage, another pop artist is Pet Shop Boys this time its MK on the mix, Robin S has returned with a similar track as before, but still just as big, Taylor Dayne's cover version of an old Barry White tune is mixed up by C & C, Kamar is out on import with rmxs, Martha Wash will get British release soon. Azuli's Underground Mass are releasing a deep, organ, piano male vocal track, Ulysses is classic US garage, along with LNR, 8 Ball Records have a hit on their hands with Wall of Sound. On the harder house we have ransom a techno sounding tune with Aleem samples, 108 Grand is a very trancy acid style and R2001 have a double pack typical fruit tree stuff, the UK mixes are good, Watchmen 2 is one of my favourites, bouncy house with a fine bassline and finally Puro Sesso is doing well, Rocky and diesel have mixed that one up. Thanks to everyone who came to Naughty but Nice, the next one is on the 24th July - all the same ingredients - Adam C.
