1996 has been a good year for Atmosphere, most importantly winning the Award for Best Magazine at the VIP Jungle Awards held at Camden Palace in August (which was a great boost of confidence to say the least), plus the design & content improvements for which I have too many people to thank, I shall start with a universal thank you to everyone who has played a part, especially the design guru Framer (for redirecting the whole future of Atmosphere), all the reviewers and writers (Hype, Bryan, Slipmatt, Lee, Dark, Adam, Mati, Norman, Neil, Roy, Roullette, Alex G, Zoe, Lion, Jellybean, Slam etc), Tristan - The man with the Cam, All the loyal (and not so) advertisers, Year in year our subscribers, and last not least but most importantly YOU the readers!!
To celebrate the Crimbo we have added another 8 pages and jammed even more hits inside including new review sections from Bailey.
We also have a bigger graffiti section courtesy of Lion the Stateside Connecta who went picture mad on his recent cycle trip to The Graffiti Hall of Fame in Harlem, New York.
Some of the biggest names in jungle drum & bass feature in the interview sections this month including Lemon D, Dillinja, Trace, Ed Rush, Rap and many more.
Judging by the amount of fax rolls I've got through over the last 5 weeks or so New Years Eve is set to be one of the biggest for a long time, well for party goers anyway. Everything from 'World Dance' to 'Desire', 'Helter Skelter' to 'Fantasy Island', 'Moondance' to 'Labyrinth', 'United 97' to 'Kool Skool', plus the return of 'Perception' under the guise of 'Devotion' I could be here all night. All of this plus much more is included in the regular 'Where to Go' section. Staying on the same tip, next month we will be starting an 'International Where to Go' page for our German and American readers.
Thanks for supporting Atmosphere in '96, Happy Turkey & New Year. See ya in '97. Ed.

SCIENCE OF THE CANS
THE GRAFFITI HALL OF FAME PHOTOGRAPHS AND TEXT BY LION @ JUNGLE NUT - NYC
The name says it all: The Graffiti Hall of Fame... "Strictly Kings and Better" is the motto. Located on the corner of 106th Street and Park Avenue in Harlem, New York City, it is a legendary Mecca for graffiti artists. I remember the first time I ever made the pilgrimage back in December 1987, I was still living in Sweden and I had only seen these pieces in pictures and photocopies out of books, and it was a total inspiration for a young writer to walk the grounds where only the best of the best got to do their work. These are some of my favourite memories, it was my first time in New York, and I already knew I was going to end up here... The air was thick with vibes...
Armed with a camera, I once again go up to Harlem. It's now almost 10 years later. I have now moved to New York, and I take my bike over to Manhattan from Brooklyn where I live and ride up 3rd Avenue to 106th, I cut over to Park where I discover they had re-done the whole outside wall which says 'The Graffiti Hall of Fame'. I can't wait to get inside to see all the new pieces. As I go around the fence, I look around in the school yard which is the Hall of Fame, I almost get the chills, the feeling I had when I was there 9 years ago was back, a feeling of total excitement of seeing some of the best graffiti pieces in the World. The first thing you see as you enter the school yard is the big wall which is almost 520 feet high, and all around it fresh piece s left to right... I whip out my camera and start shooting. I was happy to discover pieces from legends like Seen, Lady Pink and Revolt. There were also numerous pieces by new talent. The crew which seems to dominate in the neighbourhood at the moment seems to be 'The Death Squad'. A young writer passes by on the street asking me if I write, I say "I used to," he asks "Do you like that piece we did?" pointing at one of the pieces on the big wall. He tells me that there are many more pieces up along 3rd Avenue and I promise to go check them out.. You'll see pictures from my ride up 3rd Avenue between 114th Street and 120th in an upcoming issue of Atmosphere.

FUSION
AN INSIDE LOOK INTO CLUB CULTURE
SATURDAY 5TH OCTOBER - TOTTENHAM, LONDON
After the highly successful event at Wembley in conjunction with One Nation and Gism, Fusion decided to take on the task of holding an event at one of the most talked about venues that has graced our scene for a long time.
As we all know Tottenham is not one of the nicest places in the city of London, so why would a predominantly hardcore organisation decide to carry out an event like this nature, at this venue? Since the opening of Club United Nations there has been a lot of trouble, which from my point of view has been exaggerated by certain individuals but the main problems that had occured have been very serious (maybe myself and my friends share this point of view because we have never had any trouble ourselves).
Since the venue opened a year or so ago a large majority of the trouble makers have been banned from the club and this has made the club's atmosphere a lot more hostile. Talking to many ravers weeks before the event they told me that they would not even think about going to this event because of the trouble that has happened in the past, so that probably sums up why there was such a small queue outside the venue when we arrived. After an extensive search by the security (which was needed for obvious reasons) we were inside the venue.
The venue itself is excellent and has won a number of awards over the past year which proves if it was positioned any where else in the country it would be known for quite different reasons entirely. Anyway the main dance arena was set out in excellent style with a bangin Eskimo Noise sound system present and a wicked lighting show which was excellent for a venue dubbed as predominantly a club. Having been to previous events here like 'Desire (2000AD)' and
'Telepathy' it was nice to see the whole club set out in a much more brighter and colourful fashion which was obviously perfectly suited for an event of this kind.
The upstairs arena is quite small in comparison to the main arena which hosts a bar and a chillout positioned at the opposite end to the DJ box and has a number of well suited couches that you can relax and chill on throughout the night.
The DJ & MC line up for the event was excellent with all the usual names we have become accustomed to at Fusion and other organ isations of its kind, but as you can understand, it concentrated more towards the hardcore / 4 beat side of breakbeat. Over the course of the night there were a number of exceptional performances carried out by some of the artists playing. My personal favourites were from undoubtedly the nations favourite's Slipmatt and Hype who both played up to there usual high reputations, out of the 7 MC's that were billed for this event a mere 4 turned up which was a bit of an upset but MC MC, Charlie B, Freestyle and Ribbz all performed to the highest of their abilities which was much appreciated by the 75% full venue. I would say, If this event was carried out at a different venue it would have been rammed jammed, but it was still an excellent night and any hardcore fanatics who decided to miss a night out at this venue next time have a second thought about going because we honestly did not see or get a sniff of trouble on the night, so roll on the next Fusion event which will be scheduled for 18th January 1997 at the ravers favourite venue Sanctuary.
Over .. and .. out.

CLUBZONE NEW JACK CITY AN INSIDE LOOK INTO CLUB CULTURE
EVERY FRIDAY - CLUB ELITE, CLAPTON.
After hearing continuous adverts for months on Kool FM, tonight was most definitely the night to make a move and attend "New Jack City" at Club Elite in Clapton.
I had always wanted to go, the line up on the flyers each week was good and it was good that every Friday they play Jungle in one arena and House in the other.
The only thing that was stopping me from going was that it was so far from home. I'm from South London (well Surrey actually) and travelling to East London was most definitely a mission. We arrived at 'Elite' at around 1am. The outside of the club was very quiet, so when we got to the doors we got straight in, but not without a quick friendly an thorough search. On arrival into the main arena, I could hear the voice of Shabba straight away.
The speakers inside the club sounded good with a fat b line. On the decks was DJ Ash a Attack (another one of the Blackmarket Records crew), It was still rather early in the night but believe me he had the ravers straight on the dancefloor with his 100% jump up set.
The next DJ of the night was a DJ to whom I had to fasten my seat belt on this one as I knew I was about to hear a wicked set. This DJ was the one and only 'Swift'.
And yes, I was right his set was absolutely fantastic !!
Each tune he played had everyone on the dancefloor, it seemed that whenever a Shy FX tune was played everyone just seemed to get out of their seats and head straight for the dancefloor.
Also, it was great to see the atmosphere in the venue when the track "Dead by Dawn" was played, as it smashed up the place.
By this time Shabba was joined on the mic by MC Stevie Hyper D. As usual Stevie Hyper certainly did ruff it on the mic and as always put 100% effort into it. It was now about 2:45am the club was nicely full, not too empty and not too packed. I decided to take a walk round the club and was really pleased to find a house & garage room upstairs. The DJs in this room were Ewart and LMC" from the radio station Deja Vu". It was great to hear some wicked tunes and some classics as well. After about 45 minutes we took a walk back into the jungle room. Now on the decks was a DJ who I have not heard since raving at AWOL at SW1, the DJ Darren Jay.
I made sure I was in full listening mode for this set as I knew this was another DJ who was going to impress me.
Now taking care of things on the mic was an MC who I reckon is going to be big in 97, Yankee. As always Yankee roughed it on the mic and sure did keep the ravers in full effect. Darren Jay gave the New Jack City ravers a selection that was second to none, dubplates to kill, immaculate mixing and some tearing tunes. It looked like the ravers were well impressed with his set as the dancefloor stayed jammed throughout his set.
The last set of the night came from New Jack City resident Sparx. At 4am I would have thought the venue would have been half empty but it was still as busy as when I arrived. Still looking after things on the mic and keeping the crowd hyper was Yankee.
I feel that Club Elite is a weekly event where everyone goes to meet and chill out. The atmosphere in the club is great and this is a proper night club, no hall or warehouse business. The dancefloor is in the centre of the club and you've got seating around the outside and the stage at the back, with the DJ box at the side. Overall this was a great night out with some of the countries best DJs & MCs and for only £6 (or free if your one of the first 75 girls or 50 guys) this cant be bad. I also hear that New Jack City and Don FM are having a New Years party at the Lazerdrome called 'United 97'.
Shouts: Jenny & Michelle (my raving partners on this one), Mark Rochester in HMP Belmarsh (keep your chin up, be happy and stay sweet, Luv ya!).

CLUBZONE WORLD DANCE - THE BIG BANG AN INSIDE LOOK INTO CLUB CULTURE
SATURDAY 2ND NOVEMBER - ROYAL VICTORIA DOCKS, LONDON.
The night began on a bad note as we had plenty of problems finding the venue, but after a couple of laps around Docklands we eventually bumped into a number of World Dance sign posts which in turn led us to the venue (excellent idea believe me they do in fact think of everything!) Arriving at the venue on time for the beginning we waited and waited for the gates to open and after a gruelling two hour wait in the wet and cold we were eventually let in, little did we know at this point in time how much that wait was worth while as WD had more than a Big-Bang in store for us tonight which we later found out...
Once inside the complex we went straight to the main warehouse where the nights festivities were being held. The whole complex was set out in a peculiar way, believe it or not all the arenas were situated in the one warehouse which must have been a surprise to all when arriving at the venue as there were a number of smaller warehouses adjacent to the main one. Inside the warehouse all the arenas were sitting side by side with the Old School arena at one end and the House & Trance arena at the other, it was in between these where the Drum & Bass and Hardcore arenas were situated. All arenas were virtually the same size except for Old School which was the odd one out being a lot smaller.
World Dance being a pridominently Drum & Bass organisation situated everything around the type of music just mentioned. The actual Drum & Bass arena was set out in strange way with two rooms instead of one, the main room was where the DJ box and dance platforms were placed and in the other room was where later on in the night the famous WD pyrotechnics fireworks display was going to be held.
Like at all WD's there was a selection of stalls outside selling merchandise and food there was also a fairground ride, the chill-out tent was situated outside and was listed on the flyer as an arena. Throughout the night a selection of different types of mellow music was played like R & B which gave the whole tent that more relaxed feeling.
All the arenas were set-up very much the same with small stages and plenty of strobes and lazers. Like at all WD's there was a theme with tonight being Halloween and Fireworks night, so the main arena was set out with plenty of Halloween backdrops and the DJ box and speaker stands were dressed up like graves and tombs.
The night started in the Drum & Bass arena with 2 well executed sets by SS and Nicky Blackmarket who were accompanied by the ever present MC MC who slowly built up the pace throughout the night. At this point in the hardcore arena Spinback was playing a good set and was followed by Vinylgroover who got the place bubbling (where was the MCP).
Come midnight DJ Hype stepped up and started his set with the "True Playa'z Anthem" and literally seconds after the tune dropped the fireworks display started and boy did the place go up in a bang, even though the arena was not as large as at previous fireworks events the place still erupted in a way which is renowned as 'the World Dance November ritual'.
The last few hours in all the arenas was completed with as they say, a touch of World Dance magic. Each arena was playing host to not some of the best DJ's and MC's but the creme de la creme, Micky Finn and Grooverider completed processions in the D & B arena with Stevie Hyper and MC MC assisting with their lyrical talents. In the Hardcore arena Vibes played the penultimate set with MC Magika and the final set was completed with the godfather of 4 Beat 'Slipmatt' and now one of the top name MC's on the circuit MC Charlie B (good to see the day come for him to make his WD debut)! Not being too much of a house head I didn't get much time to check this arena out but I heard from others Jeremy Healy and Graham Gold played the most banging sets.
Throughout the night a number of excellent sets were played in all 4 arenas, our personal favourite was delivered by the one and only Food Junkie who played an old selection of Drum & Bass and this brought memories flooding back to us of when he was in top flight in mid 94'.
Towards the latter end of the night the faithful WD massive were plagued with bad weather but not even this was enough to dampen their minds as every person walked out with a smile on their face.
All in all it was a totally wicked night and after this mind blowing event if I were you I would put a World Dance ticket at the top of your list this Christmas as the next event at Wembley is sure going to be a blinder.

DESIRE'S 8TH BIRTHDAY
AN INSIDE LOOK INTO CLUB CULTURE
The CLUB ZONE
SATURDAY 9TH NOVEMBER - ISLAND, ILFORD.
It seems as though, all the people can talk about nowadays is the 'good old days'. The old vibes I, and the old flavour, which is said, can only be partly recaptured at old skool, events.
This Desire was no old skool rave, however it was a real throw back to that era and served as further evidence that the scene has finally rid itself of the bad attitudes which have dogged it for the past couple of years.
Every member of this cosmopolitan crowd had only one intention, to rave and have a good time. The Island was the setting for 2000ad's 8th Birthday. For the benefit of those of you who have not been to 'The Island', the venue is similar to the London 'Astoria' and 'Camden Palace'. Once a theatre, but refurbished, the venue has a lot of character. There's a big stage, an upper and lower dancefloor, and a balcony up above, with loads of seating for when the dance gets too brutal.
The production for this event was some of the best I've experienced for some time. The stage resembled a birthday cake, however it could have been improved a bit. The lights and lazers were excellent. The dancers were very professional and well choreographed. The sound system was crystal clear and loud.
The music policy for the night was 100% pure undiluted drum & bass / jungle. All night long the venue shook to the fierce rumble of the sub bass, as the DJs mixed dubplates, prototypes and test presses back in the mix.
The DJ line up was Zinc, Hype, Kenny Ken, Special K, Gachet, Rap, Frost, Mickey Finn, and Grooverider. We arrived at 11:30 as the queue was beginning to grow. The security were doing a good job in getting the ravers in as quick as possible.
We entered the arena to the sounds of Hype. This was the dark hour. Hype took us on a journey deep down into the dungeons, with some renegade darkside selection which blew everyone away. A few of the tunes were forthcoming on the new "True Playa'z" label.
After Hype stepped up Kenny Ken who was left a near impossible task of maintaining the very high standard, one which I wouldn't have relished a single bit. Kenny Ken was definitely up for the challenge, and destroying the dance appeared to be top of his agenda. The intro, was a dubplate from the Rebel MC. As the vocals "I'm Broad, I'm Broad, I'm Broader than Broadway" rang out, everybody seemed to forget themselves for a moment as they went wild screaming for the rewind. Kenny Ken then went on to tear down the place with some thunderous basslines, who must have disturbed the foundations of the building somewhat. His mixing was of the highest quality, and as he played dub upon dub, upon dub it was difficult to tell the different tunes apart.
The set after Kenny Ken was played by Special K. I had previously never heard a set played by him, Special K did not disappoint. He continued rolling out the tearing presses. His set included the remix of "Just for you London" and a tune which was a mix of Shy FXs "Chopper:" and "Let's Go". Up until this point, Rage had been on the mic. I had only heard him once prior to this event. To be honest, I had my reservations about him. He was sensational and responsible for creating a vibe which began way before we arrived and continued right to the very end. A master class compere and crowd worker, who knows his strengths and uses that knowledge to maximum effect.
After Special K followed the one and only Gachet joined by Stevie Hyper. Gachet introed with "Remember the Roller". This, like all the previous sets was an absolute rinse out. Undiluted and hardcore. Stevie Hyper, What can I say ? Back to his very best, giving the ravers 100% of what they desired. He sent the jubilant crowd to the point of no return on several occasions with a mixture of fresh and archival lyrics. This performance continued through until the next set which was played by Rap. She danced and smiled behind the turntables as she and Stevie Hyper led us (the masses) unknowingly to the slaughter house. An absolute tearin set.
JJ Frost played the next set, and what a mighty and mammoth set this was. No vinyl, strictly acetate. The best tune of the set was Glamour Gold's "Only one for Me". Like Bryan G says "This one's a special request fort the girls dem", and trust me, they loved it.
By the time Mickey Finn came on. I was barely standing, and I was forced to retire to the balcony, where I could rest and have a better view. The balcony was rammed and the dancefloor too. Micky Finn, needless to say continued the high standard, and made it even more difficult for me to choose my customary DJ of the night. The MC for the next 3 sets was Flux. Although I'm no great fan, it was the best performance I've ever heard from him.
The ultimate set was played by Grooverider. He only played for about 30 mins, but his ammunition was drawn from a small metal box. The Rider was short, but sweet, ensuring that I didn't recover until way into next week.

LABRYNTH THE 8TH BIRTHDAY
CLUBZONE LABYRINTH'S 8TH BIRTHDAY AN INSIDE LOOK INTO CLUB CULTURE
SATURDAY 19TH OCTOBER - LABYRINTH BUILDING, DALSTON LANE, LONDON.
Our journey Began on a cold (ish) October night. We were on a mission - a mission to dance the night away at the all new Labyrinth building for their much awaited 8th Birthday bash.
Once at the Labyrinth building we were greeted by a large queue which stretched along the front of the building and right around the back. After a quick search by the security we were inside and directly into arena 3 - the Old Skool arena. On the decks was Jazzy M playing some very old - old skool a bit before my time but none the less very good. We decided to check this arena out a bit later when the music was a bit more up to date.
Now it was time to do what the Labyrinth Building was best for, exploring! Our first port of call was the Drum & Bass arena which was situated upstairs in the new part of the building. This arena was already absolutely rammed. Up on the wheels of steel was the man like Ellis Dee who was playing tough tunes to a totally up for it crowd. One thing that did stick out in the arena was the sound system, one of the clearest and loudest we have ever heard. Next stop was downstairs in the new Happy Hardcore room which in our opinion was the biggest arena in the building and was rammed full of smiling happy ravers all stomping to the one and only sounds of DJ Vibes & MC Live Lee who played an excellent set. This arena was done up well with lots of backdrops, lights and a large dance platform at the back.
All this exploring / dancing was making us feel tired so we decided to go and find the back chill out garden (which we could not). Failing that we made our way to the side garden which leads us to a we complaint, the corridor from the new Labyrinth building to the old was so rammed it took us 35 minutes to walk about 10 yards and I almost got crushed in the process. This was caused by, (a) far too many people being inside the venue and (b) the corridor being poorly managed. Once we made it to the garden we found this to be completely full but it was nice to get some fresh air.
We talked to some of our friends. We talked to some of our friends who all agreed they were having a top night so far. After ten or so minutes it was time to resume our quest and the next arena visited was arena 5 - the House& Garage room which was located in the basement.
As we are not great House lovers we will not say too much about this room, only that it was done out well and everyone inside seemed to be enjoying themselves. We then took a narrow flight of stairs up which led us to the old school arena. On the decks at present was Jumping Jack Frost playing a '92 set. This man was absolutely rocking the place with a selection of the best tunes from that era. Needless to say we decided to stay for this set which turned out to be one of the best of the night.
Now it was time to visit the last room on our magical mystery tour, arena 4 - the Techno / Trance arena. We gained access to this room by climbing a winding set of stairs. After a short time we found ourselves in the attic of the Labyrinth and was greeted by a room full of hot sweating bodies gyrating to the thumping Techno / Trance. This was a very colourful room with plenty of backdrops and mad trippy lights. After a bit of investigation we found that resident DJ Corrie was at present playing. Her was p[laying a good set of pumping techno which was not as hard as say Clarkee but just at the right pace so you could dance to it easily.
To finish off the night we headed back to the Happy Hardcore room to spend the last hour with the DJ Slipmatt who I am told by many played the best set in this room. I most certainly enjoyed it.
Sorry to all the DJs I haven't mentioned or missed on the night. I have been told everyone who played,m played well.. It was just a case of too many DJs and not enough pairs of ears! All in all an excellent attitude free night from London's No. 1 dance club.
A shout to Suzie (Thanks for the guided tour!)

PARENTAL ADVISORY WARNING
TAKTIX
Taktix aka The JB aka B2B head honcho Jason Ball has had 5 years under his belt with some fine tunes and anthems of the past. Having built his reputation in the scene with his re-workings of "The Way", "Back 2 Life" and "World of Music" Jason Ball is the founder of Back 2 Basics recordings and started the label after he completed a sound engineering qualification at college. He also records under the aliases of 'Northern Connexion' and 'Benny Blanco'.
What are you working on at the moment? We are back in the studio in December to hopefully get something out for early 1997.
What are your plans for the future with B2B? Release a new 12" next year and working on a remix project to be released on '1210 series 2'.
SPICE
Recently signed to the label with her first release "Beats Back" and co produced the exclusive mix of "The Way". Spice has a vast knowledge of studio equipment and this talented female is sure to produce more new and fresh material for the future.
What are you working on at the moment? I've just completed a VIP mix of "Beats Back" which was by popular demand. This should be available on vinyl early '97, also my new track "Hold on Tight" should be out in the next few weeks.
What are your plans for the future with B2B? As a good label to be signed to I will be continuing to release tracks in the future and working with the B2B boys on exclusive remixes.
DREAD BASS
How and when did you get involved with Back 2 Basics ? First got involved with B2B in 1995 with our debut "World of Music".
What are you working on at the moment? Currently working on a remix project for B2B, along with a brand new single planned for early early 1997, and an album.
What are your plans for the future with B2B? To try and keep taking the music further which is what Dred Bass are known for, and to keep close to the label.
ASEND & ULTRAVIBE
Lee and Warren Smith started messing around with music back in 87 when they bought their first piece of equipment, a 'Commodore Amiga'. They didn't have their first commercial release until 93 with "What kind of World".
Now having a hunger for the music they were eager to go back in the studio where they produced Dead Dred "Dred Bass". They are still producing together along with some solo projects.
What are you working on at the moment? We have currently finished a project for Back 2 Basics which will be released in the future, along with lots of new stuff for Second Movement.
What are your plans for the future with B2B? To keep releasing more good stuff and have an album planned for some time next year.
DECODER/TIC
Marc Caro and Darren Beale are based in the South West of England near Bristol. Although Marc is originally from Birmingham but moved away at an early age.
Mark and Darren Write and produce many different styles of drum & bass ranging from the laid back mellow style through to the hard edged futuristic material. Mark & Darren also joint owners of 2 labels being 'Tech Itch' and 'Ruffneck Ting Recordings', both are located in Bristol Town Centre.
Decoder (Technical Itch) have also done productions for 'Moving Shadow', Second Movement', 'Dee Jay' and a remix for The Shamen "Alpha Proxima".
How and when did you get involved with Back 2 Basics? We got involved with B2B in 1995 with our debut "Rockers".
What are you working on at the moment? Decoder are currently working for Moving Shadow under Technical Itch, doing some work for Hardleaders and have something coming out on Peshay's label.
What are your plans for the future with B2B? To carry on doing what we are doing, and to have more releases and remix work.
THE DREAM TEAM
How and when did you get involved with Back 2 Basics? We first got involved when Loe and Warren made Dead Dread. We phoned up Jason to see if we could do a remix and they said yes, we did a mix which has used on a VIP mix of Dead Dread.
What are you working on at the moment? At the moment Joker Records are working on new material like : "Fresh", "What's My Name", "12am", "Survival of the Fit" remix and "Check the Teqniq" remixes.
What are your plans for the future with B2B? Recently we have been in discussion with Back 2 Basics to do a joint label called Back 2 Joker where we will team up and do some fresh releases.

Interview
lemon d & dillinja
Dillinja and Lemon D are among the most respected producers in drum and bass with a string of highly regarded 12"s on an impressive list of labels which include Metalheadz, Prototype and V. Atmosphere managed to track down two of the scene's most heavyweight and elusive characters to ask them their views on breaks, clubs, djs and music past, present and future.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO DRUM 'N' BASS?
D: I got into it through house music and hip-hop, when it was one sound altogether at the same time. Then new beats started coming into the house tracks.
L: As soon as the new breaks started coming in, that was it!
WHAT YEAR WAS THAT?
D: About 1990, when there started to be more emphasis on the breaks.
WHERE THERE PARTICULAR PEOPLE YOU USED TO GO OUT AND HEAR?
L/D: Grooverider init and Fable, at Rage. I also remember Evil Eddie Richards.
WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO MAKE MUSIC?
L: Because I really liked it. I was into that whole hardcore scene a lot. I was buying the tunes, Dj'ing at parties and small clubs. I got made redundant, got a bit of money, borrowed some off my mum and made my first tune.
YOU MUST HAVE BEEN SERIOUS ENOUGH ABOUT IT TO PUT MONEY INTO IT AND DO IT?
L: Yes I suppose I was but to do it as a career, at that point I didn't realise that the music I was into was into would get really big. I was just in it, making tunes and making a living out of it.
D: I was Dj'ing with a sound system. I went into the studio one day in Camberwell and rolled it out, my first track.
WHAT MUSIC DID YOU LISTEN TO AS A CHILD?
D: Jazz, my mum used to play a lot of jazz, Blue Note label stuff.
How would you describe your sound?
L: versatile, whatever, can't describe it.
BETWEEN YOU YOU'VE MADE TRACK ON A VERY LONG LIST OF LABELS, IS THAT SOMETHING YOU WANT TO CONTINUE?
D: No, we want to concentrate on our new label Valve and 2 other labels we plan to do called "Paint" and "Marine". Marine will be for more experimental, different styles and Paint will be for the tearouts.
YOU ARE BOTH RESPECTED FOR MAKING VERY ADVANCED TECHNICAL DRUM 'N' BASS. IS THAT A PRIORITY FOR YOU?
D: Definitely, but didn't want to go too far, get too complicated with the beats, because when you hear those kind of tracks played out, people can't really get with it, its too complex for the dancefloor, you've got to keep it rolling.
DO YOU GO OUT A LOT AND LISTEN TO YOUR TRACKS BIG PLAYED OUT AND MAKE NOTES ABOUT WHAT WORKS AND WHAT DOESN'T?
D: Yes, but both of us can work in the studio for a day and roll out something that works anywhere. But its more about doing something that works, that's different, with different breaks and still keep it rollin', that's the key.
DO YOU THINK THAT YOU HAVE TO EASE PEOPLE INTO NEW STYLES?
D: yes definitely, just add a hint of new edits and let them get used to it before you go full blown into new complicated drum patterns.
YOU BOTH MAKE SOME OF THE MOST POPULAR AND RESPECTED DANCEFLOOR TRACKS, WHAT TO YOU CONSIDER TO BE THE KEY TO YOUR SUCCESS?
D: Djs believing in us and pushing us from the start, people like Bryan Gee, he helped us a lot.
YOUR STYLE HAVE BEEN EMULATED AND COPIED, HOW DOES THAT MAKE YOU FEEL?
L: It's ok as long as people don't copy it edit for edit.
D: I was a bit pissed off with that label 'Awesome Records', they rinsed out the Valve tune, took the beats blatantly.
DO YOU GET PISSED OFF IF PEOPLE SAMPLE YOUR RECORDS?
L: No not really, only if its new track...
D: ...and not whole 8 bar loops.. fuck that!
WITH YOUR NEW LABELS, DO YOU INTEND TO JUST PUT OUT YOUR OWN MATERIAL OR WILL YOU ASK OTHER PEOPLE FOR TRACKS?
D: We'd like to get a lot of remixes done
L: and we will get tracks from other people if they have time, but only from certain artists.
D: but if someone new comes along with a good track, we'd put it out.

Page 39
Interview
WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO GET A TRACK FROM?
L: Photek. D: Definitely and Goldie.
WHAT IS YOU FAVOURITE DRUM 'N' BASS TRACK?
L: I haven't really got one.
D: me neither but I do like the other side of Photek's UFO, "Ring's around Saturn" I do love that tune and I've always really liked "Killamanjaro".
WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE BREAK?
D: Off key jazz breaks but you can't use them in drum 'n' bass.
L: Breaks with ride cymbals.
D: We've got this new one...
L: No don't say it, 'cos it'll only get pirated.
HOW DO YOU SEE DRUM 'N' BASS DEVELOPING?
D: Production is going to get a lot better, although it already has over the last year, people are starting to use live musicians. The music is just getting better, more professional
WHICH OF YOUR OWN TRACKS ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF AND WHY?
L: It's a bad question, I don't like any of my stuff! Its difficult if you are in my shoes, if you made it in the studio and had to listen to it 50 million times. After that you I think I don't want to hear again 'cos you've heard it so many times by the time you've finished it you're not into it any more.
WHAT IF YOU HEAR IT PLAYED OUT AND IT ROCKS IT, GETS LOADS OF REWINDS?
L: It's easy to do that.
D: yeah, its easy to get that response. You know that sometimes you've just knocked up the track, so you don't feel like its anything special. You just stand there thinking, oh i know that was going to happen. You've done the tune to work on the dancefloor, you haven't necessarily gone deep and thought about it, you've just rolled something out.
L: Sometimes you hear stuff months down the line and you think, yeah, I like that now.
D: The one I'm really proud of is "Angels Fell" 'cos I stepped it out and there weren't many steppers around at the time. I never heard it played out at the time, I hear it at the Blue Note about 6 months ago and it really surprised me, I never realised that everyone liked it so much.
SO WHAT ABOUT YOU(LEMON D) WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE?
L: Karl can answer that for me
D: It has to be "Urban Style Music" it's just you all over.
WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU DANCED IN A CLUB?
D: Rage, the first one
L: That was a good one. I dance all the time, I love beats
D: I find that a set has got to sound right for me to get into it, otherwise its just sounds like noise, most sets are like sludge, you can't hear the beats properly.
SO WHO DO YOU THINK DROPS A GOOD SET?
D/L: Its got to be Groove.
YOU HAVE BOTH GOT ALBUM DEALS THIS YEAR, DO YOU SEE THIS AS AN OPPORTUNITY TO EXPLORE OTHER STYLES?
L/D: Definitely, we want to start using vocalists, to bring different styles into breakbeat, slow stuff as well.
YOU ARE CLOSE FRIENDS, DO YOU HELP EACH OTHER WITH TRACKS?
L/D: No.
IF YOU COULD COLLABORATE WITH ANYONE WHO WOULD IT BE?
L: Well we are with an album, but we can't say otherwise everyone will know what's going on. I've got people for my album that I've only dreamed about working with.
D: I'd like to work with the drummer who drummed the Amen brothers and get him to drop some different breaks. I'd like to try and find him.
L: No don't do that, if you dig him out and he finds out about drum 'n' bass he'll be the richest man in the world!
WHAT WOULD BE YOUR ADVICE TO UP AND COMING PRODUCERS?
D/L: Stick at it.
L: Don't let politics get in the way, just concentrate on the music.
WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR '97?
L: Get rid of the Reece!
WHAT ABOUT ALEX REECE?
L: No the rock 'n' roll Reese basslines, there are other ways of making it hard.
D: You've got to mix and blend, you can't have it hard all the time.
L: New basslines and new beats.
D: Everyone has got to start doing their own breaks, this is breakbeat music.

Interview
Name: Mark. Age: 26. Lives: Southampton.
When did you first get into production? I used to put sounds through computers and just twist them up just to see how they would turn out, as time went on I got more serious and started working in studios. I learnt how to use the equipment and eventually bought my Akai and never looked back.
How would you describe your musical formula? I'd just say Nasty Breakbeats full stop!!
What has been your biggest selling tune? Probably "Mad PLO" which reached No. 4 in the Radio 1 'One in the Jungle' chart. "Devastate" did well, Mickey Finn is remixing "Mad PLO".
How do you feel the scene is progressing musically at the moment? I think the production has got a lot tighter across to board and in general more effort is going into mixdowns etc. New styles have appeared and the music has broadened its horizons more now than ever which is good but the industry politics and bullshit is now at an all time high which is not so good. I don't get involved in that shit, a lot of the smaller labels are fighting for recognition.
How did you start to record for TOV? One day I was in Unity records and I asked Matt to put a demo on to see what he thought. He liked it and as I was on my way out Clayton (being the first class A & R man he is) came over and asked for a copy. Things just led on from there.
What DJs promote your tunes on dub? It depends on the style but mainly Mickey Finn, Hype, Nicky Blk Mkt, Brockie, Darren Jay, Zinc, Kenny Ken, Grooverider, Kool FM and of course me and Kane. Big respect to all.
A lot of labels are recording albums, do you have any plans for one? I'm going to be involved with the Trouble LP next year with some tracks. Eventually I would like to record an LP as a solo project, I have a lot of ideas for that.
What's the scene like down south? Right now its firing, most of the DJs that play down here enjoy it cos they get a good response, in a lot of respects people in London are spoilt for choice and its a day to day thing for them. Whereas people down here go out and enjoy themselves cos they respect it. I was at this gig in Southampton a little while ago and Grooverider was due to play to about a 1000 strong crowd, he stepped onto the stage and people were going mad already, that's respect. There are some talented people down here, Big Reds from Southampton, Aquasky's originally from Bournemouth. And the girls, well.. you'll have to check it !!
What were you doing before you got into the music? I sold computers daytime and DJed at night playing Rap / Soul. I also strung up the occasional sound system and played on the now infamous Future FM (where DJ Brisk, Ramos and Simon A. Started their careers).
What are your views on the split within the scene? It's all shit as far as I'm concerned, good music is good music. I come from a rap orientated background which taught me to appreciate all types of music anyway. It makes me laugh to think that some of these beats originated from diverse styles of music from heavy metal to jazz and everywhere in between so that kind of makes the whole subject irrelevant.
You are not only a producer but a DJ also, tell us more about that? I get a lot of bookings along the South Coast and I'm just starting to push into other areas now. The only reason I don't play out more is cos I'm always in the studio, I'm going to be around more come '97. I think people will be surprised when when they check my set cos they get a show. I ain't gonna say more than that.
What labels / Producers do you rate? True Playa'z, V, Ram, Dopo Dragon, Full Cycle, Philly Blunt, Prototype, No Smokin, Splash, Bee Jay, Metalheadz, Proper Talent, Low Key, Runninz, Good Looking, Ebony, Formation, SOUR and of course Trouble on Vinyl, Renegade Hardware and Renegade.
What DJs / MCs do you rate? As far as DJs, anyone that rocks a crowd. MCs I rate are Skibadee, GQ, Flux, Cleveland Watkiss and MC Dynamite. I like most of the Kool crew too.
Funniest moment in business? Being told about this bloke who wanted to break into the music with this massive concept which included walking round in a Darth Vader suit (true!) apparently he was a little, how do you put it, Off Key!!
Favourite LP and 12" ? "Critical Breakdown" by Ultramagnetic MCs and "Optimistic" by Sounds of Blackness.
How did you get the name Red? That goes back to when I did graffiti art, I used to do trains and tag "Arca", "Seri" and eventually "Red". Some of those pieces are still up too.
What are your musical influences? I check for everything from Rap to Soul to House to Dancehall. The people that have influenced me most are: Grandmaster Flash, Kool Herc, James Brown, Ultra, Tuff Crew, Marvin Gaye, Method Man, Rakim, Mary J Blige, Grooverider, Saxon Sound, Marly Marl, The Bomb Squad, Rudman, Fabio, LFO. People like that.
What do you do in your spare time? Be with friends and just relax, play video games, watch b movies, sci fi movies, go out and buy soul music and eventually sleep. My latest thing is the Internet, the other day I saw some dark shit on their like how to make bombs and shit like that, not that I'm a terrorist or nothing but it's kinda crazy.
What can we expect from you in the future? Well me and Kane have just started work on a track with Skibadee which is gonna be phat, trust me. I'm looking forward to that. I've got a whole lot of stuff in the pipeline which is just getting sorted out now with other people, more Djing, but most of all more nasty breaks, I guarantee that.
If there was something you could change about the scene what would it be? More music and less politics, and more money! I know that's 3 things, but seriously the political thing is out of control, I try not to get involved but sometimes I just want to expose certain people. I'm cool with most people though.
A lot of major record labels have signed up artists lately, what are your views on this? Well it's gotta be a good thing, but obviously the deal has got to be right. It's stupid to get into a position where you've worked hard to earn that chance then give up your rights and artistic control to some dumb who doesn't like the music. I mean, fuck it, I want to eat at the end of the day and not worry about whether or not I can pay bills, you know? And if someone is going to pay me a lot more money to do what I do now then I'm in it! Think about it, if I didn't or if no one else did they'd just get someone who wasn't even into the scene and give the music a bad name but on a worldwide basis.
Shouts My brother Paul, Mandy, Vicky, Charlie & Lucy, the Trouble / Renegade crew for accepting me into the family, Nick & Jay Manchip, Math & Ju, Sacha at TDP, Kool FM crew, Sarah, Stevo, Vinyl Distribution, Simon White, Paul N, Blackmarket, Unity, and of course Clayton Sparticus and Mark VV off key for making shit happen.

DOC SCOTT - YAKOTA REMIX - HARTHOUSE DUB
Scotty touches down with another trademark mix on Techno label Harthouse. Keeping the mix in the same vain as the original with a clean techno sound. The key to this mix is the switch in the middle coming from pure techno to urban drum & bass at the flick of a wrist. Another massive mix from Doc Scott also watch out for "Shadow Boxing" and "Unofficial Ghost" remixes for early '97.
DOM & ROLAND VS OPTICAL - QUADRANT SIX MOVING SHADOW DUB
Throughout '96 the darkside of the Metalheadz sound has been breaking new barriers in modern drum & bass. Dom & Optical have reached the pinnacle of that sound with "Quadrant Six". This is basically devil worship business and is not for the faint hearted or unsound of mind! I can't begin to describe it so I won't, just buy it and prepare for the consequences!!!
Q PROJECT & SPINBACK - MARS - TIMELESS
After a recent hoard of releases the Funky Technicians have come on a new angle with this one. A clean fat break, neat edits and mature B-line perfectly compliment. The near perfect musical score of this one with an imminent release date. Be sure to check out one of the deepest tunes of '96.
PARRALLAX - WATER COLOURS - URBAN FLAVOUR DUB
Urban Flavour is definitely a label to watch out for in '97. Hailing from the Midlands their output has increased in '96 and the quality is increasing all the time! New signing Parrallax comes in on the musical vibe and is a definite tune.. Out standing music, good fat breaks and well complimented B line makes "Water Colours" stand out. Big up Neil and the Urban Flavour crew for this.

DOM & ROLAND - THUNDER - PROTOTYPE
Introed with techno stabs and a twisted filter to death mentasm sample. Dom pushes his equipment to the limits creating dirty sounding, hard, distorted beats. Definitely one of my favourites (it's so dark!)
GENOTYPE - EXTRA TERRESTRIAL - RENEGADE HARDWARE
The darkest release from Hardware yet. An eerie hardsteppin' intro and a huge bass drop sampling "Unbelievable" sums up this tune nicely. It's a non stop musical assault from start to finish which is no doubt going to make this a big tune for Renegade Hardware. First class drum & bass.
DJ TRACE - REPLICANTS - NO U TURN DUB
Taken from the forthcoming No U Turn album, Trace creates a very sharp and dark sound, this one is more of a roller using the raw elements needed to make a drum & bass track. No flashy tricks here, just a simple, effective but still a very dark tune.
DYLAN - TURBULENCE - DROPPIN SCIENCE II
This an aggressive, quick paced, action packed piece on vinyl that gets darker and darker as it goes on. One to be listening to from beginning to end to be fully appreciated. It's such a busy sounding track way too dark and noisy for some but I love it.
FUTURE FORCES - COLD FUSION - RENEGADE HARDWARE
Another quality track from the duo of "Dead by Dawn" fame. Creating a solid sounding, full of punch track that rolls along nicely with some dark and sinister strings sliding in and out over the top. Tune after tune this duo turn out top quality drum & bass tracks. A force to be reckoned with in '97.

LION OF JUDAH - JAH SET IT / BINGY MAN
In much the same vein as Kane's recent mix of this tune but tuffened and chopped up, keeping to the same vibe that we have become accustomed to from this label. 93%.
BLACKSTAR - RADICAL (KANE REMIX)
Chopped, stabby beats with Tim Dog vocals which drops hard with the "Can I Get Another One" vocal, twisted bass and minimal but effective beats. 93%.
DREAD
THE SPECIALIST - DROP IT ON THE 1 / BEEP & ROLLING
The Specialist gets militant once again with eerie strings, stabbin beats and the title vox leading up to the fat amen drop with twisted bass and a general ruff vibe. 97%.
THE TERRORIST - MIDNITE 96 / THE SOULSTER
Some old skool stab in intro followed by the reece break, then mad amen stabs and into the funked up vocal which is followed by some nasty bass and a fat old break to roll it out. 95%.
EAST SIDE
MAGISTRATE - DON'T MESS / KEEP IT RAW
Cut up choppy beats in intro with title vox into a bass that can only be described as a mission with the additions of some cool effects. 93%.
THE FLAVA UNIT - CONTINUE THE STORY
Both sides of this on a rollin head nodding tip, one with some twisted out bass and the other with modulated. 94%.
EBONY
SHY FX - THE MESSAGE
You've all heard this one. "Ladies & Gentlemen" is the vocal that intros this, plus the usual Shy FX formula that he is renowned for makes this a must. 97%.
WOLF REMIXES - SHY FX & 45 ROLLER
Once again this is doing damage in the clubs. Shy's unmistakable formula just can't lose, be it an amen stormer or a simplistic roller like this. All the same ingredients but tuffer beats and bass. 97%.
LET THE FUNK FLOW RMX / 15 - POTENTIAL BAD BOY
Potential goes to work on the remix of this giving it a funky bouncy feel with plenty of stabs and effects thrown in to roll it out. 94%.
THE SPIRIT / GET BUSY - POTENTIAL BAD BOY
Starts with cut up amen stabs with some cool funk bass which soon drops to some Dope Dragon style bass and some minimal funky beats which gradually builds up as it goes along. 93%.
MAD APACHE / STROKES - SHY FX
Some guitar strumming wild west business in intro followed by a funky break and bass which rolls out for a while. Gets a bit too much for me after about half way but still wicked on the dancefloor. 94%.
ATOMIC DOG
Jazz piano with some mad effects on that smooth tip, this is soon joined by some deep bass stabs making this a funky roller in true Atomic Dog style. 93%.
METALHEADZ
RUFIGE CRU - T3 / DARK METAL
The infamous Terminator returns. The countless times various producers have hailed this tune a major corner stone in our drum and bass scene makes this a scary one to remix but Goldie once comes up with the goods. Bad remix. On the flip pure darkness and futuristic beats, check it. 100%
PESHAY - PREDATOR / ON THE NILE
Intros with eerie strings, twisted filters, murky noises and sharp percussion followed by harsh angry stabbin' breaks with plenty of tricks. Angry warped bass and amen follow to roll out the rest of the tune as only Peshay knows how!!. On the flip Peshay's infamous string affair "On the Nile" 99%
MOVING SHADOW
TECHNICAL ITCH - THE VIRUS / WATCH OUT
Eerie string intro with choppy beats and moody effects which soon drops into some tearout amen with nuff edits and twisted bass. One for the headstrong. 96%.
EZ ROLLERS - RETRO / SUBTROPIC
Beaty intro with a bit of Eastern Promise which drops into a cool shuffly breakdown with a wicked vocal. Retro describes this well. 96%.
DEEP BLUE - HELICOPTER 96 / THURSDAY
My fave is the "Copter" remix which has been worked on in a very progressive fashion with all the right ingredients from the original. fat. 97%.
MYSTIC MOODS
MYSTIC MOODS - JAZZ DELIGHT
Shuffly beat intro with cool sax stabs and pumpin bass making this a cool head nodding roller of a tune with a nice groove. 93%.
MYSTIC MOODS - MUSIC SO SPECIAL
Smooth intro with the title vox running throughout accompanied by stabbin beats and minimal but effective bass stabs with plenty of effects giving this a real smooth feel. 95%.
PENNY BLACK
TWISTED ANGER VOL 3
Rain fall strings with an eerie feel then heavily filtered beats with a fierce step dropping hard into pitched down amen and countless other beats twisting it out with fat bass. Precise EQ's on this one. Pure unadulterated darkness. 96%.
TWISTED ANGER VOL 4
Using Epic strings from 'Sugar Hill' and slicing percussion with amen snares teasing you then it comes in hard and steppin on a kind of Source Direct tip with twisted angry bass tearin' it out for the remainder. A tune of much deepness. 97%.
PHILLY BLUNT / L
P - FIREFOX - WHO IS IT / BACKOUT
Both sides of this are absolutely storming with the A side being my fave. Minimal production and a fat rolling bass makes this another Philly winner. 98%.
V - DJ DIE - SPECIAL
Once again Die comes with a fat number for the V stables. Harsh beats and gentle but very effective bass roll this out. As usual this track is minimal but works very well. 98%.
RENEGADE / HARDWARE
R - SHOGUN / MOULY & LUCIDA - ULYSSES / NAUTILUS
Intro's with 'Set Speed' beat and soothing strings building up a cool rolling summer vibe. 96%.
R - TERTIUS - VIBES
Intros with steel drum type sound and shakers with rollin tappy beats and deep bass. Overall, strange jazzy music. ***
RH - GENOTYPE - EXTRA TERRESTRIAL
Twisted strings with title vocal kicking off with harsh amen and some distorted pitched down business keepin' it dirty with nuff filter tricks and angry techno bass. 98%.
RINSE OUT
MYSTIC - BREAKTHROUGH / SACRED
Cool shuffly beat in intro with some mad flute effect which, after a breakdown drops into some fat bass and beats making this a rollin head nodder all the way. 96%.
WEST SIDE - THE EVOLUTION
Mad stab in intro, soon joined by cut up beats then a fat distorted bass which builds up the track with vocals and plenty of beat edits. I can only describe this as a chopped up roller. 94%.
RUDE & DEADLY
AL MASSIVE
Hard stabby beats intro this with the "Step to This" vocal which soon droops to some fat amen and reece beat to tear it out on a different tip for this label. Ruff. 93%.
DJ SEBEL - TEST / HIT U ONE TIME
Fast paced intro with a sustained bass
Page 57
Reviews
flowing throughout which drops into a manic workout with fat bass stabs and the "Test" vocal alongside energetic beats. 94%.
SUBBASS
ILL FIGURE - UNTOUCHABLE / STYLE
My fave is the flip with the Tribe called Quest and "Style" vocals dropping into cool bouncy beats with a fat rubber band b line. 97%.
CLUB SATURN REMIXES
4 mixes to choose from on here taken from various Saturn games. Mixes from Xpressive with a smooth rollin journey, Remarc with an amen tearer, Kenny Ken & Back 2 Basics with cool dancefloor rollers. 94%.
OTHERS
2ND MOVEMENT - ASEND & ULTRAVIBE - THIS AIN'T OPERA
Omen type string intro followed by metally beats, rolling amen and reece 'n' rolling bass making this a powerful stomper throughout. 94%.
5HQ - IC1 - COOPER / PRESENCE
Stabby beats and trumpet sounds intro this which soon drop into some dirty twisted bass tearin it out, soon followed by some amen stabs to make it that much harder. Ruff. 96%.
AL'S RECORDS - ALEX REECE - FVR / NEW YORK
once again Alex comes with a quality jazzy summer number with plenty of smooth vibes and effects. 93%.
ALL GOOD VINYL - PULSE / JAZZ CARTEL - U DOWN
My fave is the Flytronix mix with some epic soundscape business in intro sliding into shuffling beats and droning bass with a cool retro feel about it. Groovyl. 96%.
BEESWAX - SCARRED FOR LIFE REMIXES
Bizzy B & Wacko's mix on A side starts with a harp sound and chopped beats then, after a vocal it drops to a cool bass building it up to a twisted out bass whereas The Smokers Inc mix on the flip has more of a shuffly feel which drops less serious bass which drops into a pumpin amen soon after. 92%.
CHRONIC - SHOOK
Mobb Deep vocal in intro "You all alone in these streets cousin". Chronic on there usual pure badness tip with hard harsh stomping beats & deep swirly bass. 98%.
CREATIVE SOURCE - Q PROJECT - 2ND LOOK / PLANET VIBE
Snappy beats and swirly filtered strings intros this piece from Q Project. With some soft bass this is a dreamy ride. Deep mellow bizness. 93%.
CRIMINAL COMMUNICATIONS - THE ADVOCATE - DEVIANT
Stabby beats with mentasm type strings intro this, then comes some punchy and wobbly bass. After a breakdown it comes back with some fast paced amen to tuff it up. 95%.
DIRTY MAC - UNI INDICATOR - SHOOTING AT THE SUN
My fave is the B side with stabby kick drum and skippy percussion with a soothing old skool vocal and cool guitar, which soon breaks down and comes back supplying you with a harder beat to beef it up. 97%.
BLACKTOWN - MC MC - FATAL ATTRACTION / ON A TIP
Jazzy piano with rollin tappy beats and smooth bass rolls this one out, then in comes some vocals which just ride and beats one for the summer masses. 92%.
FORMATION - TEQNIQ - THE RIOT / HOLD IT NOW MIXES
More intense than the original with plenty of effects. When this drops, it drops hard and tears out the whole place - Ruff. 96%.
FT RECS - STOMP & WEAVER - SOUNDTRAP / SNAKEBEATS
Rap type vocal at start then after a while drops into some jumpy beats and bass keepin it lively. I think the vocal gets a bit monotonous but beats are cool. 92%.
FULL CYCLE - KRUST - GENETIC MANIPULATION
Krust comes hard with this release, 4 tracks on 2 vinyl of sheer minimalistic deep drum & bass overflowing with grooves. Buy on sight. 98%.
GLOBAL COMMS - DANNY BREAKS - U AIN'T DOWN
Breaks at his finest, deep and rollin with pitched down distorted breaks with the baddest filters. An intense mission with a dark trip hop type of feel to it. Danny attacking the slow beat business on the flip. 100%.
GYRATION - POWER SUPPLY - PASSAGE / GALAXY
Intros with rollin beats and a grinding bass with strings giving it a real minimal but spacey feel. Minimal but effective. 94%.
HANDS ON - GEOFFREY WILLIAMS - DRIVE
2 versions of this, vocal & instrumental. My fave is the latter which has kind of an Alex Reece type of flavour. Shuffling beats, cool and minimal bass and a general smooth tappy feel to it. 93%.
INDEPENDENT DEALERS - FLYNN & FLORA - NEW WORLD
Harpy intro with slappy beats and bass stabs soon being joined by a hard amen, kind of an old skool, sound with the bass but also passes as a fat tearout number. 93%.
INFRACOM - MEGASHIRA - OVERLOAD /GRAND DRAGON
Cool old sounding intro with shuffling and stabbin beats coolin it out then comes a drifty rap vocal in the same vein as "F Jam". Mellow mission.
JOKER - CHECK THE TEQ / SUKA DJ
Intro from Run DMC's "Sucker MC's" which drops into bass similar to that in the recent Teqniq tune which rolls out throughout the tune. 94%.
KEYNOTE - NOEL NEWTON - INSECURE FEELINGS
From one half of Astral Vibes comes this cool 'n' smooth number with funky beat edits and a nice atmospheric vibe. Check the flip for a bad house track. 94%.
LAB LOGIC
Mysterious eerie intro with Benny Blanco type vocals which is followed by a Reecy beat and percussion, after a while of this comes a fat bass tone making this one serious groover. 97%.
LABELLO BLANCO - NOOKIE - MYSTICAL PEOPLE
Wicked vocal number, for once I can say she has a wicked voice. Add this to Nookie's class production and you get a summer anthem to be reckoned with. 96%.
LIFTIN SPIRITS - STAKKA & K TEE - YA DON'T STOP
Stakka & K Tee come with more rollin dark vibes for the jump up massive. Phat beats and deep mind swirling bass accompanied by tearout amen and eerie vocals. 96%.
LOW KEY - SPECIAL K - UP TOP / GET ORIGINAL

NOCTURNAL - OBLIQUE - HELIOPHOBIC / C41
Dark string intro with shuffling beat edits which is soon joined by some pumpin amen which chops out with minimal bass stabs taking this tune on a journey. 94%.
PEPPER - LEXICON - MADRID / REMEDY
Smooth rollin intro with some cool effects roll this out with a fat jazz bass and some swirling atmospheric strings, keepin' it lively. 93%.
PROMO 11
Skippy break at start with wobbly bass, soon joined by a hard metallic beat and some slides with light strings giving this a smooth but hard feel throughout. 94%.
PROTOCOL - MACHINE CODE - THE LANDSCAPE
Super shuffly beat intro with title vox which builds up to a cool beat workout with fat bass and edits. 97%.
ROGUE TROOPER - DJ CREATION - DARK COAST
Eerie string intro with various vocal effects then into some dark stabby bass chopped beats and the like. Overall rather old skool sounding and the production is a bit weak in places. 80%.
RUFFNECK TING - DECODER - NOSIS / PUSHIN'
This being more of a menacing tip to the previous for this label with plenty of beat edits and effects on a kind of Ram tip. 95%.
TIMELESS - ILS & SOLO - FROZEN / REPRIZE
Swirly intro with smooth piano into a funky break and cool string. Soon after this tune turns into an amen tearout completely out of the blue and is soon brought back to earth by some soothing effects. Ruff as ever. 96%.
TROUBLE ON VINYL - SPECIAL K - THE SYSTEM / DANGER
Using a lot of the ingredients from Blahzay Blahzay's track of the same name. But giving it that Special K touch with fat bass and energetic beats. 96%.
TRUE PLAYA'Z - FREESTYLE - PLAY THE GAME
Both sides of this are ruff with Hype's "learn.." being a funky roller in his usual style keeping it dancefloor friendly. The flip sees Zinc's "Play.." a bit harder for him but still a powerful number. 98%.

Interview
PROPER TALENT
WORDS: LYON & FRENZIC.
DJ RAP, ONE OF THE MOST PREDOMINANT FEMALE DJS ON THE SCENE.. SHE SEEMS TO BE EVERYWHERE AT THE SAME TIME. I GUESS THAT'S WHY SHE'S ON TOP OF THE GAME.. BORN IN SINGAPORE BY PARENTS WITH ITALIAN / MALAYSIAN AND IRISH BACKGROUND, TRAVELLING WAS A BIG PART OF HER LIFE AT AN EARLY STAGE. SHE WENT TO SCHOOL IN MALTA, INDONESIA AND OF COURSE ENGLAND. SHE SPENT THE LATER PART OF HER CHILDHOOD AND TEENS IN ENGLAND.
AFTER TRYING EVERY ODD JOB THERE IS FROM MODELLING TO FACTORY WORK, SHE FIRST STARTED RAVING IN 1986. THIS APPARENTLY CHANGED HER LIFE. THIS WAS IT.. SHE REMEMBERS HEARING A COUPLE OF DJS BY THE NAME OF "DEM 2" AND THEY WERE PLAYING THE FIRST BREAKBEAT SORT OF STUFF I'D HEARD AND IT JUST HOOKED ME FROM THEN. THAT'S WHEN I DECIDED I WANTED TO DJ. I'D BEEN INTO THE MUSIC AND WANTED TO DO MY OWN MUSIC EVER SINCE I CAN REMEMBER." SHE REMEMBERS BEING INTO TUNES LIKE "CID TO GET IN" AND ALL THE SHUT UP & DANCE STUFF.
RAP WORKED HERSELF INTO THE SCENE THROUGH SOME PIRATE RADIO SPOTS ON STATIONS LIKE RAVE AND FANTASY FM. "KENNY KEN & COOL HAND FLEX HELPED ME LEARN HOW TO MIX SO THAT'S HOW I GOT INTO IT." ON THE QUESTION SHE MUST BE SICK AND TIRED OF ANSWERING BY NOW SHE ANSWERS: "I ALWAYS SAY THE SAME ANSWER TO THIS ONE, IT'S EASY BEING A WOMAN DJ AND PRODUCER, BUT IT'S HARD BEING A WOMAN. IF YOU'RE GOOD AT SOMETHING NOTHING CAN STOP YOU WHETHER YOUR FEMALE OR NOT. IT DEFINITELY IS A LITTLE HARDER BEING A FEMALE. IT WASN'T SO HARD IN THE BEGINNING. I FEEL A LOT OF PEOPLE WANTED TO HELP."
RIGHT AROUND THAT TIME SHE MADE HER FIRST RECORD WITH JEFF B CALLED "AMBIENCE" UNDER THE GUISE OF "THE ADORED". IT WAS RELEASED ON RAW BASS RECORDS, IT CHARTED AND APPARENTLY IT DID PRETTY WELL BUT RAP SAW NO MONEY FROM THIS PROJECT AND SHE SEE'S THIS AS HER FIRST EXPERIENCE IN THE RECORD INDUSTRY. SHE THEN WENT ON TO DO SOME WORK WITH LABELS LIKE JUMPIN & PUMPIN, SUBURBAN BASE AND DEE JAY RECORDINGS.
"SPIRITUAL AURA" (GET RAW) WITH ASTON "WAS THE FIRST RECORD I MADE THAT I GOT RIGHT. I MADE A LOT OF GOOD RECORDS BEFORE THEN, BUT THEY WERE MORE ON THAT HARDCORE TIP."
THE PROPER TALENT IMPRINT WAS STARTED EARLY ON AND HAS BEEN AROUND FOR 2 OR 3 YEARS NOW, "TO HAVE ARTISTIC FREEDOM WAS THE MAIN REASON". THE FIRST FEW TRACKS ON THE LABEL "DIGABLE BASS", "INTELLIGENT WOMAN" AND "SWITCH" SET THE PACE
Page 61
Interview
FOR THE LABEL AND SHE DIDN'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT SLOW AND GRADUAL BEGINNINGS. SHE SAYS THAT SOMETIMES HER NAME AS A DJ MIGHT HELP SELL RECORDS (AND ALSO THAT HER RELEASES ALSO SOMETIMES HELP HER GET CERTAIN GIGS), BUT WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO IT, THE MUSIC IS WHAT WILL REALLY MAKE OR BREAK A TUNE. "..THE TRUTH IS IN THE SALES."
THERE'S NO STOPPING THIS LADY, SHE NOW RUNS TWO OTHER LABELS. 'LOW KEY' AND 'UNIQUE MUZIQUE'. SHE DESCRIBES LOW KEY AS A LAUNCHING PAD FOR THE ARTISTS WHO HOPEFULLY WILL END UP ON PROPER TALENT. SHE MENTIONS THAT SPECIAL K HAS TRACKS COMING ON PROPER TALENT AS WELL AS 2 NEW ARTISTS SHE HAS JUST SIGNED: FLAPJACK AND SURREAL.
UNIQUE MUZIQUE SHE DESCRIBES AS STILL BEING IN AN EXPERIMENTAL STAGE. "WE'VE HAD ONE RELEASE WHICH WAS "SAXUALITY" BY MYSELF. THE VIBE OF THE RELEASES ON THE LABEL IS THE MORE EXPERIMENTAL SIDE OF DRUM & BASS, BUT AS I SAID IT'S STILL IN IT'S EARLY STAGES."
IN THE STUDIO SHE WORKED WITH VOYAGER (AKA PETE PARSONS) FOR MANY YEARS. THEY DID MOST OF THE ENGINEERING TOGETHER, SHE NOW WORKS WITH SPECIAL K AND SHE TENDS TO DO MOST OF THE ENGINEERING HERSELF AT HOME. SHE SAYS: "..WHEN IT COMES TO DOING JUNGLE, I'D MUCH RATHER JUST HAVE ALL MY ATTENTION ON MAKING THE TRACKS, SO I'D RATHER WORK WITH SPECIAL K, DON'T GET ME WRONG, I CAN ENGINEER, BUT I FIND IT TENDS TO BREAK MY CONCENTRATION."
SHE SPENT 3 WEEKS IN THE STUDIO WITH PETE (VOYAGER) WHICH LED TO A BUNCH OF TRACKS RELEASED ON AN ALBUM "INTELLIGENCE" ON THE PROPER TALENT IMPRINT.
WE RECENTLY SAW RAP TOUR WITH DJ SS, MENTAL POWER, RATTY AND MC WARREN G AS A PART OF THE FORMATION RECORDS TOUR HERE IN THE UNITED STATES. SHE MENTIONS PLANNING A TOUR OF HER OWN OF THE U.S. AND MAYBE AUSTRALIA NEXT YEAR.
IT SOUNDS LIKE SHE HAS PLENTY OF PLANS FOR THE NINE SEVEN, INCLUDING LANDING THAT DEAL. "I'VE GOT ALL THE MUSIC READY TO GO AND I'VE GOT 4 OR 5 OFFERS AT THE MOMENT SO IN JANUARY I'LL GO ROUND TO ALL THESE PARTICULAR RECORD COMPANIES AND WHOEVER GIVES ME THE BEST DEAL IS WHO I'LL SIGN WITH."
ON THE TOPIC OF DJ'ING SHE DESCRIBES HER STYLE AS "VERSATILE BUT CROWD FRIENDLY, I LIKE TO GIVE THE CROWD WHAT THEY WANT.", SHE STRESSES HER DECISION TO TONE DOWN HER PLAYING OUT IN THE FUTURE. SHE SAYS SHE'D RATHER CONCENTRATE ON THE LARGE FESTIVALS AND RAVES LIKE DESIRE, ELEVATION, INNOVATION, DREAMSCAPE AND THE LIKES. SHE ALSO MENTIONS THAT SHE'S MADE A POINT OF NOT PLAYING AT RAVES THAT HAVE BECOME REPUTABLE FOR VIOLENCE.
RAP FEELS THAT THE JUNGLE SCENE IS IN TROUBLE AT THE MOMENT, "I THINK THE PEOPLE THAT ARE CAUSING THE TROUBLE AT THE RAVES HAVE TO GO FUCK OFF OUT OF IT AND GROW UP!"
SHE SAYS THAT SHE LOVES PLAYING ABROAD IN PLACES LIKE GERMANY, WHERE SHE GOES ON A REGULAR BASIS, ALSO SWITZERLAND AMONG OTHERS. SHE HAS ALSO BEEN HERE IN THE UNITED STATES A FEW TIMES IN THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS. SHE'S SCHEDULED TO GO TO JAPAN IN JANUARY. "I WAS ASKED TO DJ IN BOSNIA RECENTLY BUT I TURNED IT DOWN. EVERYWHERE I GO IS REALLY INTERESTING, AUSTRALIA WAS PRETTY COOL. BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME.."
SHE HAS DONE SOME RADIO WORK FOR STATIONS LIKE KISS FM FOR 'RUFF KUTS' AND RADIO 1 FOR THE 'ONE IN THE JUNGLE SHOW'. RAP'S DEFINITION OF A GOOD PROMOTER: "SOMEONE WHO IS HAPPY IN WHAT THEY ARE DOING. I THINK THIS REALLY REFLECTS ON THEIR RAVES, THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT FACTOR FOR ME, CAUSE YOU CAN GET VERY ONE VISIONED, AND PROMOTING CAN EAT INTO YOUR SOUL AND IT CAN ALL BECOME VERY BUSINESS AND MONEY ORIENTATED."
OTHER DJS SHE RATES ARE PEOPLE LIKE "GROOVERIDER, HYPE, ANDY C, JUMPING JACK FROST, ALL THE SAME BOYS THAT HAVE ALWAYS BEEN MY INSPIRATION." AS FAR AS MC'S SHE LIKES WORKING WITH: "I THINK GQ IS OBVIOUSLY THE BEST. I LIKE SKIBADEE, FEARLESS, STEVIE HYPER, SIVE - O, THERE'S A GOOD FEW MCS OUT THERE."
HER THOUGHTS ON THE SO CALLED 'INTELLIGENT' SCENE SPLITTING AWAY FROM THE MUSIC SHE SAYS: "I THINK ITS GOOD-THAT THERE ARE DIFFERENT STYLES OF THE MUSIC. I THINK ITS BAD WHEN DJS REFUSE TO PLAY CERTAIN MUSIC BECAUSE IT IS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS, THAT OR THE OTHER. I LIKE TO PLAY A BIT OF EVERYTHING IN MY SETS, BE IT CUTTING EDGE DRUM & BASS, IF THERE'S A TUNE THAT'S A BIT MELLOW I'LL STILL PLAY IT, I THINK ITS A SHAME MORE DJS DON'T DO THAT, BUT SAYING THAT IF A DJ JUST LIKES ONE STYLE YOU CAN'T EXPECT HIM TO PLAY ANYTHING ELSE."
SHE DOESN'T THINK SHE HAS REACHED THE HIGHEST MOMENT IN HER CAREER YET, BUT SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS SO FAR WERE "PLAYING AT FESTIVALS IN FRONT OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE AND I THINK NEW YEARS PARTIES ARE ALWAYS GOOD. MY HIGHEST POINT OF MY CAREER IS WHEN I GET ON STAGE AND DO MY OWN SONGS."
OTHER GENRES OF MUSIC SHE LIKES ARE: "INDIE AND TRIP HOP, FABIO ALSO LOVES HIS INDIE. I'VE BEEN INTO THIS MUSIC FOR YEARS NOW, I'M IN A LITTLE BAND IT DOESN'T HAVE A NAME YET, IT'S JUST FOR A LAUGH.." SHE DOESN'T LET HER INDIE TASTES INCORPORATE INTO WHAT SHE'S DOING AT THE MOMENT IN JUNGLE THOUGH "IT FREAKS PEOPLE OUT WHEN YOU CAN MAKE 4 OR 5 DIFFERENT STYLES OF MUSIC. I LIKE TO KEEP IT SEPARATE. JUNGLE, DRUM & BASS IS A GREAT THING AND IT HAS OPENED MANY MANY DOORS FOR ME BUT ITS NOT MY ULTIMATE GOAL AND ITS NOT WHERE I'M GOING IN THE LONG TERM. I THINK IT'S A VERY GOOD LAUNCHING PAD FOR ME, BUT ITS ALWAYS BEEN JUST THAT.
THE ULTIMATE FOR ME IS TO HAVE MY OWN SOLO ALBUM OUT AND BE RECOGNISED AS A SOLO ARTIST DOING MY OWN SONGS THE SAME WAY BJORK, MADONNA, TORI AMOS AND THE LIKE ARE ALL RECOGNISED FOR THEIR SONGS. OBVIOUSLY IT WILL HAVE A LOT OF INFLUENCE FROM DRUM & BASS, IT'S NOT LIKE EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL, IT'S NOT LIKE SONGS JUST WITH A BREAKBEAT UNDER IT. IT HAS A VERY HEAVY TRIP HOP INFLUENCE."
SHOUT OUTS TO: ALL PROPER TALENT CREW, ALL MY MATES & TON PROMOTIONS"
IT'S OBVIOUS THIS LADY IS ON A SERIOUS MISSION, NOTHING CAN HOLD HER BACK. ALL WE CAN DO IS TO ENJOY WATCHING HER ACHIEVE HER GOALS.. I KNOW I'LL BE UP THERE FRONT ROW ENJOYING EVERY MINUTE OF IT..

MAGIKA PART 2. WORDS: NEIL. PHOTOGRAPHY: TRISTAN.
"I'VE NEVER BEEN INVOLVED IN ANY COLLABORATIONS AS FAR AS RECORDS GO BUT I HAVE A FUTURE PROJECT PLANNED WITH BILLY BUNTER WHERE HE'S GOING TO DO A REMIX FOR OUR LABEL AND STIXMAN AND MYSELF ARE GOING TO DO A TRACK FOR GBT, GENERALLY I THINK IF YOU'VE GOT YOUR OWN LABEL WHAT'S THE POINT OF GOING ON SOMEONE ELSE'S!
"WHERE I COME FROM "BIRMINGHAM" THE SCENE IS NON EXISTENT. DRUM & BASS IS LONG GONE DUE TO TROUBLE IN THE CLUBS AND BECAUSE OF THIS PEOPLE THINK THAT BIRMINGHAM IS REALLY MOODY BECAUSE OF WHAT HAPPENED TO MC MOOSE BUT THERE IS STILL A VERY BIG HARDCORE FOLLOWING HERE THAT TRAVEL TO PLACES LIKE MILTON KEYNES AND STEVENAGE WEEK IN WEEK OUT. IN THE EARLY 90S BIRMINGHAM WAS LIKE A CAPITAL OF THE RAVE SCENE WITH PARTIES BEING HELD AT THE RAG MARKET AND ASTON VILLA LEISURE CENTRE ALL THE TIME BUT NOW IT'S JUST HOUSE MUSIC UP HERE. I HAD PLANS TO START UP A RAVE CALLED 'COCOON' IN DECEMBER IN COLLABORATION WITH JEZ AND CARL WHO USED TO RUN QUEST, PIMP AND ATOMIC JAM IN WOLVERHAMPTON BUT PROBLEMS MEANT WE HAD TO POSTPONE IT TILL MARCH BUT WE WERE ON THE SAME NIGHT AS HELTER SKELTER SO THE NEW NIGHT HAS BEEN PUT BACK TO APRIL. PANDEMONIUM ARE ALSO LOOKING TO START SOMETHING AT THE NEW BIRMINGHAM ICE RINK."

"Up until 18 months ago I had never been involved with any radio stations on permanent basis except for a couple of guest appearances on stations like Dream FM. I then got involved with Radio XL for 'Roll The Beats' and after meeting Tony Inchley from the BBC who offered me the show, this turned out to be a good steppin' stone for me and has been very influential in my career. Here, I can play the music I love and act as an outlet to promote events, while, at the same time, entertaining a mass crowd on a commercial radio. We get calls from all over Central England in places like Manchester and Wales. It's been going now for 18 months with DJs like Ratty, Ned Ryder and Pilgrim. Dougal has done a guest show and we hope to get DJ Vibes soon aswell. Recently I spoke to Stu Allen who has a weekly show on Piccadilly 102 in Manchester, I mentioned to him that I was trying to get a happy hardcore slot on Radio 1 which had drawn a blank. He offered me a monthly Saturday show on the radio, I am still trying to get into Radio 1..
"I would like to get involved in mainstream radio and after covering for Simone last summer at the Dreamscape Awards for MTV I really want to push the TV work further. I'd like to approach Channel 5 or a cable company in the Midlands to do some dance music coverage."
"My plans for the future are to progress more in the scene. As I said I'm starting to work for Dream Magazine and I'd like to progress on the recording side of things and I'd also like to do an album. After our first track out on Timebomb we lost our vocalist to Virgin Records. I did a hunt in all the mags to look for someone not only female but male to vocal there is also a big promoter who is willing to help us with an album to be licensed to a major, Stixman also wants to get signed and we might be doing some work with the bass guitarist from the Young Disciples called Femi. While I've been writing I've got more and more hungry to write a book, kind of an A to Z of the scene. A few years ago I studied human biology because I wanted to become a physiotherapist.
"About 3 years ago myself and Mongoose contacted Fila about a sponsorship deal, we sent them a CV and they sent us a parcel back with T shirts, trainers, woolie hats and baseball hats as a thank you for enquiring. It was up to me to contact Fila and after I did MTV I sent them the video and that seemed to catch their attention, a lot of people out there think it's easy to get sponsors but they like you to be getting major publicity like TV and such. I've been with them for 18 months now and Stixman joined recently also. Rap is the only other person I know with a deal, she is with Caterpillar."
"As far as mixing goes, I've been mixing on the radio since the start. I went back to back with Dougal at a previous Dreamscape event and by September next year I would like to start playing out on a more permanent basis."
"Back in 1992 I started writing event reviews for Eternity magazine and after about a year or so the editor Paul Boote felt I should be doing some more indepth stuff like interviews and insights, which I did. Since then I have worked for M8 in Scotland and in January I am moving to London to work full time for Dream Magazine as a sort of Sub Editor / Promotions guy."
"When I'm not in the studio or working I like to work out and go to the gym. I recently started doing Kung Fu, I also like to chill out and read books. At the moment I'm reading Schindlers List."
Shouts: All promoters, all DJs & MCs, Stixman, Neil, Terry, Pacino, The Living G, Parsons & Roger, Spinback, Ranger T, Dougal, Mike & Ashley @ Explosive & Timebomb Recs, Bortis & Block, and all the massive who support the cause! And to all of my good friends: Steve, Tim Dog, Steve Jackson, Gonz, Ashley, Monty & Wonder Woman - Get that golden whip out I, DR SARK.

Interview
NAME: Dylan. AGE: 22. LIVES: Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire
HOW DID YOU INVOLVED IN PRODUCTION?
Basically there was nothing around that I was really into so I started producing stuff that I personally wanted to hear, then I played it to Danny (Droppin' Science) and things just happened from then on.
WHAT'S YOUR VIBE WHEN YOU ARE WRITING A TUNE?
Well, I'm basically into hard beats, its all about the beats to me, I like deep sounds, Sci Fi like things, I'm not usually in any particular vibe at the start, but all the tunes seem to turn out extremely hard.
HOW DID YOU HOOK UP WITH DROPPIN' SCIENCE?
It was when I used to go to Boogie Times, I got chatting to Danny Breaks and told him I had been working on some bits, next time I went up there I played a tape and Danny was into it.
WHAT RELEASES HAVE YOU HAD TO DATE?
The first release was Kosmos (Droppin' Science) which I did with Roy, also a remix for Moving Shadow and a 12" for Shadow is forthcoming, there is a 12" coming on Based on Bass which I did with Facs and a remix for Universal Language, but look out for Droppin' Science 11 which I've had a wicked response to.
DO YOU DJ?
I play on Rude FM 104.3 every Sunday night 12 - 2 and a few raves every now and again, I would like to push the DJing a lot more next year.
HOW DO YOU FEEL THE MUSIC IS AT THE MOMENT?
To me the music around is the best it has been, with technology happening so fast there are no boundaries in what you can do, people are very open minded and with the separation happening in the scene it is making people take more chances and doing things in their tunes that they wouldn't have done before.
WHAT PRODUCERS DO YOU RATE?
Dillinja, No U Turn Crew, Dom, Metalheadz, Moving Shadow, Photek, Source Direct, DJ Die, Lemon D, Technical Itch, Hardware, not forgetting the great Danny Breaks.
DO YOU DO YOUR OWN PRODUCING / ENGINEERING?
I do all the engineering and producing myself, but mixdown is at Danny's.
WHAT PLANS HAVE YOU GOT FOR THE FUTURE?
I just want to keep putting out quality releases. We are also going to put a Droppin' Science LP out mid next year, basically I want to do my thing.
DO YOU LIKE ANY OTHER MUSIC BESIDES DRUM & BASS?
I like hip hop, anything with breakbeats, I'm not into singing, vocal things, I'm more into sounds and beats. Definitely no Swing, garage or Happy Hardcore.
ANYTHING ELSE TO ADD?
Look out for Droppin' Science Vol 10 & 11 in your shops very soon, check out Droppin' Science next year cause we've got some bad stuff on its way.
SHOUTS: Natalie, Danny, Facs, Pon, Sofie, Phskik, Roy, Safari Sounds, Rob Omni, Rhodesy Felch, All Parliament Records, Bailey, Kemi & Storm, Randall, Peshay, Grooverider, Kenny Ken, Fierce, ED Rush & Dom, Clayton, Fugitive & Reckless, All Rude FM Massive, Simon & Sean Moving Shadow, Odette & Lloyd 24 Karat. That will do.

THE INFAMOUS MOBB DEEP
On the heels of a classies gold LP, The Infamous Mobb Deep bounces right back into the next chapter of life, death and music. Prodigy and Havoc pick up the pen once again and "Drop A Gem On 'Em" marking a new taste of the new LP, Hell On Earth.
Mobb Deep and the QBC: Godfather Pt. III, Gotti, Ty Knitty and Gambino have seen life take a turn for the better in the last two years since "Shook Ones." At the same time an unpredictable tragedy has made this one of the most painful times in Mobb Deep history. Gambino's twin Scarface died in a gruesome Manhattan car accident leaving another close friend dead and seriously injuring four others. Despite death, the life cycle continues.
May 14 1996 marks the birth of the next generation in the Mobb family, also the birthday of Prodigy's son Tchaka Jr. Preceding his procreation, Pee has been rapidly expanding his mind through readings he calls "the study of facts" or "right knowledge." Also striving towards a righteous path, Havoc's younger brother has returned from prison a Muslim reuniting his family with a positive inspiration for the whole team.
As the commercial world comes in on revolutionary ideas in music, Mobb Deep follows a path less travelled seeking refuge behind the only reliable form of media they confide in on the street - word of mouth.
The wisdom contained in their words comes piece by piece, one spoonful at a time. The album's title Hell On Earth is as Havoc says "right in front of your eyes." Music and movies don't create violence. The tensions of daily life are responsible for the timeless cycle of violence in our world. Entertainment exists merely as a mirror constantly reflecting our hellish reality.
The music of Hell On Earth represents this dark picture as the lyrics contemplate the delusion of a "thug" mentality. Beginning by confessing, "I'm tired of living life this way / crime pay / but for how long? 'Till you reach you downfall...," the album opens with "Animal Instinct." Even in the music industry, the stakes have gone beyond business.
These days, artist and record label competition can look more like gang warfare as Pee points out, "This ain't rap its bloodsport / ya life cut short / ya fell short / the pressure's on high, full court."
Joining the Mobb once again, following his platinum LP, Nas sets the tone quickly on the queensbridge collaboration "Give It Up Fast" also featuring Rapper Noyd (introduced on the last Mobb Deep album) who returns with a burst of strength and street wisdom. Meanwhile, Prodigy and Havoc relay a simple message to those interested in doping business with the Mobb, "not going to the tables if its not about doe."
Also returning to the grain after a long string of street sensations on his own, Wu Tang's Chef Raekwon AKA Lex Diamonds slides onto the list at the last minute with "Nighttime Vultures." And for the first time, another Wu Gambino Johnny Blaze (Method Man) touches a Mobb Deep track on "Extortion" with a few words "if you wanna pop the most junk / be the same motherfuckers with the most lumps. Chew on that shit."

Interview
DARK TIMES AHEAD
The dark "Tech Step" sound seems to be the flavour of the year as we move into 1997, Alex Constantinides speaks to DJ Trace, Ed Rush, Dom & Roland and Nico, some of the cloaked warlocks responsible for this devastatingly dark magic.
Reports of alien abductions going back decades. Covert agreements between those in power and extraterrestrial's where they've been allowed to experiment on us. Alleged flying saucers having crashed where their technology is now in the hands of the world governments. Genetically engineered man/aliens used by the governments as telepathic spies. The idea for cheap easy inexhaustible fuel supplies given to us by aliens years ago but kept away from public consumption because of the loss of revenue it would cause the oil magnates.
And here's a new one. Who's to say that this colossal hugely ugly metal dome to be built in the heart of London for the turn of the millenium isn't being prepared- not as just another entertainment venue for the rich but a landing pad for a huge flying saucer set to reveal itself as the new millenium enters? It is far too ugly for them to be serious about building it if not for some other reason?
Paranoid conspiracy theorist? Me? And proud of it. Whether the muses of a writer whose rinsed out too many Rizla's or legitimate truths, the idea of science fiction becoming science fact is a thought not too far from the front of most Western living individuals as we enter 1997.
Thoughts which are very much reflected in the music we listen to, where all music's from hip-hop to soul prophesise times unknown ahead, and in our scene the dark and later named "Tech Step" sound seems to be the flavour right now, with it's full-on futuristic feel and concentration on mysterious, suspenseful vibes. Artists at the helm of this chrome argon gas tanker include of course Goldie, not least with his soon to be released new mix of the seminal much much cited "Terminator" in "T3", backed with "Dark Metal", those St Albans homeboyz Source Direct and Photek, the great Andy C and Ant Miles when they're feeling in a dark mood, Doc Scott who may have started the ball rolling with the ground breaking "NHS EP" of about 1990, Adam F's recent "Metropolis" and of course here's No-U-Turn posse past and present.
DJ Trace, Ed Rush and Nico today release solo and collective efforts and can be said to be the ones that started the ball rolling again after hardcore's initial dark stage with the unbelievable when 1st listened to "Mutant Jazz" (SOUR). Not least also the head banging chrome dance amazing pitched down Amen in it's recent 2nd remix in "Mutant Revisited". As a finished product it sounded nothing like the original, where the starting point was the schizophrenic reversal of the originals piano loop and where, sitting in the open plan graffiti decorated cool dude pad of the No-U-Turn offices in Uxbridge, West London Nico takes up the story.
"I came up with the beat switching idea because I'd heard loads of DJs when they're playing out cutting their beats with the crossfader. Now only the people that know noticed it but the general effect was that it made the crowd jump that bit higher. So I thought why not make a tune that does that effect already on record."
Nico is unaware that the technique had already been employed by No-Smoking Records' Smokey Joe on the dub influenced "Shining" (Labello Blanco) and therefore can be credited with the freshness of the idea, a production technique which led to a million copycats and the rolling deep "Tech-Step" album on SOUR "But it was just those two breaks though," Says Trace sitting next to him, "They were so devastating in combination."
DJ Trace is currently hanging his hat in the States where he is gaining lucrative dollars as a very in-demand DJ and has also signed a deal with US techno/electro label Sm:)e. Like Dom & Roland as you shall read later Trace's tastes got progressively darker after producing ambient textures in his debut single, collaborating with Bukem in "Teach Me To Fly", soon getting more mysterious with his first for Lucky Spin records in the furious industrial Amened "Inside

Interview
Information". "It was weird that night we did "Mutant" really," Trace continues in the middle of a two week stay back in London, "Everything that happened to me that day leading up to when we recorded that bit. I know myself that I'd had a really bad day when I did that tune."
"Me too!" Adds Ed-Rush. A b-boy through and through who first pummelled our consciousness with the serrated aggressive Blood Clot Art-Attack back ip about 92, Ed has also got progressively deeper and darker since, with the latest culmination being his deserted virtual reality city in "Skylab" (Metalheads) and the more recent paranoid vibes in "Mothership" (No-U-Turn).
"I like my shit gritty," he explains, "I never liked or made it happy. When I recorded "Blood Clot" it was done the way I like it and it wasn't about copying everything else that was around at the time, it's just that all the beats and samples that I used in that were done in the way I thought they should have been done for me to be happy to bump it in the car."
Nice: "When Ed came up to me and played the little sound of the ring glowing from the film 'Flash Gordon' (Aha! now I know!) and that vocal sample from a reggae sound tape it just blew my mind and really started getting me into hardcore. I wasn't into this happy stuff and pianos that were around at the time at all. Then when I heard "Terminator", you know that bit when the sample goes "you're talking about things I haven't done yet" and the drums just go crazy, I couldn't believe it when I heard that."
So what was happening at the time, were these beats created as a retaliation to all the blue cheese piano loops at the time, was the happy sound a catalyst for the creation of the dark sound? "We weren't doing it as a retaliation to what was around at the time" Says Ed. "We were just making this music that was later to be called darkness because it was the shit we was into, like I said it was the car beats for us. Although I can see that maybe the reason why it went so popular after everything was so happied up because it was a reaction against that, going totally in the opposite direction."
So at least we can be grateful to the pasturised pianos and helium vocals for something! Dom of Dom & Roland used to record through No-U-Turn and is now one of the King cards in the Royal Flush poker hand that is Moving Shadow. An artist that is pushing forward the frontiers of mystery with a succession of hard hitting singles like "The Planets", "Intastellar Jazz", "You're Into Something Else" and more recently the panoramic "Storm", with a forthcoming album through Rob Playford's label too. A one man band (Roland actually being his sampler!) who was caught up with at his yard in Shepherds Bush, also in West London.
"I used to listen to hip hop before I entered the hardcore scene (who didn't?). An amiably calm Dom says, "and what it was about the music for me was the looped drums, the way they took it and kept it looped for the whole track. It's probably because it was so attractively monotonous that hooked me and it was this monotony that I liked because of the way it sinked in and became entrenched on your mind. If you aren't paying full attention to it your mind subconsciously works out what happens next and as a result sort of hypnotises you and takes you to another level. And I'm really into the way drum and bass has taken that hypnotism angle that much further.
"There was a lot of really dark old electro tunes that came out at one time like "Pac Jam" and "Space Is The Place" but then hip hop went more concrete and ghettofied, the street aspect and kind of lost that dastrali feel. And I like to think that me and certain other people are carrying on where they left off with what we do.
"In 92 and 93 you had all these dark things but on the most part the production wasn't there. They might have got this b-line lick from, a horror B-movie or something and put a beat over it without actually sitting down and thinking how they could work it together with the beats to make something original. Whereas now these dark things are that much more well thought out making them that much more visual.
"That's one of my main aims in making music. You've got to listen to it and somehow be involved in it. Like when you listen to that Future Sound Of London "Lifeforms" album and you put it on through the headphones when you're really stoned and you listen to it for the full one and a half hours, you come out with the impression that you've just been told a story or have just completed a journey and that's the mood I like to convey."
"Frequencies man!" He laughs as he plays something off DAT which, with it's apocalyptic kettle drums is simply devastating. And dark.
