FRANKFURT - BERLIN A WEEKEND IN GERMANY WITH DRUM & BASS / JUNGLE BECOMING EVER MORE POPULAR ON THE INTERNATIONAL STAGE, WITH RAVES BEING HELD IN SUCH PLACES AS ICELAND (METALHEADZ), AND RUSSIA (THUNDER & JOY), THE MOMENTUM OF THE UNDERGROUND TO EMBRACE AND HELP ENHANCE A BUDDING INDUSTRY COULDN'T BE BETTER. IT'S MY PLEASURE TO SHARE WITH YOU MY EXPERIENCE IN GERMANY OVER THE WEEKEND 12 - 14 JULY. THE HYPNOTIC CLUB IN FRANKFURT HAS STARTED A REGULAR FRIDAY NIGHT SESSION THROUGH HANNIBAL THE PROMOTER. ON IT'S FIRST NIGHT (THE 12TH) THERE WAS A MIGHTY LINE UP OF UK DJ'S. I ARRIVED WITH DJ ZINC ON THE WHEELS OF STEEL, HE PLAYED A TUFF SET WITH SOME SMART MIXING. THE PLACE WAS JAMMED AND THE CROWD WERE HAVING IT. BASSFACE SASCHA (MANHEIM) AND DJ SEBEL (BERLIN) HAD ALREADY PLAYED, FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T HEARD OF THESE TWO, HERE ARE SOME POINTERS. THE FORMER HAS A CURRENT RELEASE ON KUS RECORDS AND THE LATTER HAS APPEARED ON FLEX RECORDS. WHEN BRYAN G AND MC GQ HIT THE STAGE THE WHOLE PLACE LIT UP EVEN MORE, THE FIRST TUNE "READY OR NOT" REMIX HAD THEM ROCKING WHICH WAS WONDERFUL AND THE EVENING WAS SET. ANDY C HAD MISSED HIS PLANE BUT DID EVENTUALLY ARRIVE, BUT UNFORTUNATELY WE HAD TO LEAVE AT 2:30 BECAUSE OF THE LONG DRIVE TO BERLIN. WE ARRIVED AT THE LOVE PARADE IN BERLIN AFTER CHECKING OUT HANDWORX IN KREUZBERG, I MET IT'S OWNER 6 YEARS AGO IN LONDON. HIS SHOP STOCKS A WIDE RANGE OF DANCE MUSIC WITH ALL THE LATEST RELEASES FROM LONDON INCLUDED. THE SHOP HAS 8, YES 8 TURNTABLES WHERE THE CUSTOMERS CAN LISTEN AT THEIR LEISURE. THE LOVE PARADE ITSELF WAS A MEDLEY OF COLOUR, THERE WERE OVER HALF A MILLION PEOPLE JAMMIN UP THE STREETS. THE MUSIC PLAYED WAS MOSTLY TECHNO WITH A LITTLE HOUSE AND A HINT OF DRUM & BASS. WE SET UP A STALL WITH RECORDS, TAPES, AND MERCHANDISE (METALHEADZ, PHILLY BLUNT AND VJ). WE HAVE TO EDUCATE THE PEOPLE IF WE WANT TO GO FORWARD !!! THE PEOPLE WERE FRIENDLY AND OBJECTIVE AND THOSE WHO KNEW WERE GLAD AND SUPPORTIVE OF THE PRODUCTS WE HAD. THE LIKES OF D JAX-UP-BEAT HAD FLOATS AND THE MEDIA WERE THERE IN THEIR MASSES. CARL COX WAS ON THE MTV FLOAT, HE WAS PLEASED TO SEE ME !!. IT WAS A COOL EVENING AND THE PEOPLE WERE HAPPY AND JUMPIN TO THE MUSIC. LATER ON WE MOVED ON TO THE FUTURE CLUB (WTF - WHAT THE FUCK), WHERE WE WERE ENTERTAINED BY BERLIN'S FINEST DJ SEBEL FOLLOWED BY NO SMOKIN'S SMOKEY JOE. THERE WAS ABOUT 350 PEOPLE INSIDE THE VENUE. THE MUSIC IN GERMANY HAS NOT LONG BEEN EXCEPTED. IN THE SOUTH, (MANHEIM, FRANKFURT, HEILDBERG) BUT IT'S NOW SPREADING WITH THE IMMINENT MEDITATION TOUR IN BERLIN, SAABRUCKEN, BREMEN, AND MANHEIM. THIS WILL BE A 4 NIGHT TOUR FEATURING MICKEY FINN, DJ RAP, BROCKIE, AND SHY FX. WAX DOCTOR WAS IN BERLIN ON THE ABOVE NIGHT AND THERE WAS ANOTHER DRUM & BASS PARTY IN BERLIN. THAT'S RIGHT, IT SEEMS THE MUSIC IS GROWING IN LEAPS AND BOUNDS IN GERMANY. THE WEEKEND WAS BEAUTIFULLY TOPPED UP ON THE SUNDAY AFTERNOON IN KIKTORIA PARK WITH OUT TO LUNCH - A HOUSE EXTRAVAGANZA WITH SOME OF GERMANY'S FINEST DJ'S. DJ ATA AND USA'S JOHNNY FIASCO. A FINE WEEKEND INDEED. WITH THE IMMINENT SCREENING ON TERRESTRIAL TV OF A JUNGLE / DRUM & BASS DOCUMENTARY WHICH I ALSO HAPPEN TO BE FEATURED IN, THINGS CAN ONLY GET BETTER ABROAD. 18. PIC1. SMOKEY JOE, SEBEL & KRU... PIC2. MC QG & BRYAN G... PIC3. ANDY C.

DESIRE - CLUB VIBRATION GERMANY 24.7.96 DESIRE LONDON ON A MISSION TO CLUB VIBRATION SATURDAY 27-07-96 DOORS OPEN AT 20:00 START AT 21:00 DESIRE HAVE BEEN PUTTING ON PARTIES FOR AS LONG AS I CAN REMEMBER, AND OVER THE YEARS HAVE GONE FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH. ON SATURDAY 27TH JULY WE SET OFF ON WHAT IS NOW KNOWN AS THE MARATHON TOUR FOR MANHEIM, GERMANY WITH MYSELF AND 41 OTHER HARDCORE DESIRE RAVERS. THE JOURNEY WAS HELL BUT THAT WAS PUT DOWN TO THE IDIOT DRIVING THE COACH. I MUST STRESS NOW THAT ALTHOUGH THE JOURNEY LASTED FOR 61/2 HOURS MORE THAN WE ANTICIPATED, IT WAS WELL AND TRULY WORTH THE WAIT. PHIL & MICK SHOULD BE WELL PROUD OF ALL THE PEOPLE THAT CAME OUT FOR THIS EVENT AND EVEN THOUGH THE JOURNEY WAS LONG, THE PEOPLE WERE ALL SMILING AND JOKING WHEN WE GOT THERE. THE VENUE ITSELF WAS BY FAR ONE OF THE BEST I'VE SEEN IN A LONG TIME. THE SOUND SYSTEM IN ALL ARENAS WAS WELL AND TRULY TREMENDOUS. FOR THIS I GIVE 95%. THE GERMANS WERE POLITE AS I'VE ALWAYS FOUND WHEN DJING IN OTHER PARTS OF THE COUNTRY. THE LIGHTING SHOW WAS GOOD AND IT WAS NICE TO SEE THE TERROR STROBES AND MOONBEAMS IN A VENUE AGAIN, I WOULD GIVE 90% OUT OF A 100. IF YOU WANTED TO CHILL OUT YOU COULD DO SO DOWN BY THE RIVER BANK AND ROLL SOME PAPER (HA HA). WHEN I ARRIVED, DJ RAP WAS ON, SHE PLAYED SOME GOOD TUNES AND GOT THE CROWD JUMPING. I MISSED ELLIS DEE'S SET BUT ONE OF MY GERMAN MATES FROM KOLNE ASSURED ME THAT HE WAS ROCKING THE PLACE NON STOP FROM THE FIRST TUNE HE PLAYED, I'M NOT SURE WHO THE GERMAN DJ WAS IN THE SECOND ARENA AT THIS POINT BUT HE WAS RUTHLESS AND PLAYED A TOP SET, I POPPED BACK UPSTAIRS TO LISTEN TO MICKEY FINN, OH MY GOSH, IF YOU HAVE NOT BEEN OUT AND LISTENED TO THIS CHAP OF RECENT, THEN GET YOUR ARSE OUT THERE NOW. FROM THE MOMENT HE CAME ON TO THE MINUTE HE CAME OFF HE HAD THE PLACE ROCKING AND BOY WAS HIS SET TUFF. MICKEY WAS BLOODY RUFF! WHEN I WENT DOWNSTAIRS I CAUGHT DJ RANDALL. HE PLAYED A BLINDER AND AGAIN THE GERMANS LOVED HIS CHOICE OF MUSIC. HE KEPT ROLLING OUT TUNE AFTER TUNE AND HE CERTAINLY DESERVED THE REWIND CHANT THE GERMANS GAVE HIM ON SOME OF THE TUNES. I GIVE HIM 100%. DJ ZINC. WELL IT'S ONLY THE SECOND TIME I'VE CAUGHT MY OLD MATE ON THE TURNTABLES AND BOY WAS I IMPRESSED. THIS FELLA HAS CERTAINLY COME OF AGE, HE TEASED AND PLAYED WAY ABOVE HIMSELF, WHEN I SAY THIS BOY IS THE FUTURE OF DRUM & BASS DON'T TAKE IT LIGHTLY. HE'S 100% INTO PLEASING THE CROWD AND THAT'S WHAT HE DID. THIS YOUNGSTER PLAYED A TOP SET AND WILL BE ONE OF THE BIG NAMES OF TOMORROW. EARLIER ON I CAUGHT SOME OF JACK FROST AND HE PLAYED A NICE ROLLING SET, THE TUNE THAT STOOD OUT MOST IN THE SET WAS THE NEW RONI SIZE VOCAL PIECE, SO WATCH OUT FOR THAT AS IT'S WELL AND TRULY TUFF! I'M ONLY SORRY I MISSED SOME OF THE SETS, FOR DESIRE '96 EUROPEAN TOUR WAS THE BEST SHOW I'VE BEEN TO IN A LONG TIME. IN MY TOP TEN RAVES, DESIRE [GERMANY] GET'S FIRST PLACE WITH THE LAST DESIRE AT ROLLER EXPRESS COMING SECOND. RESPECTS TO PHIL AND MICK. BY ROY B (AKA MAD B) PS: SHOUT TO EVERYONE ON THE COACH, SEE YOU IN DECEMBER! CHECK NEXT MONTH FOR JUNGLE FEVER IN GERMANY...

Interview
L.T.J BUKEM STATESIDE As jungle / drum & bass continues to grow in popularity worldwide, some of this scene's pioneers and innovators are at long last making their way to the states. Although to this point reserved to underground parties promoted primarily by flyers and voicemail, we are beginning to see organised tours hit the U.S. allowing a greater number of people to experience the artists and their music. Earlier this year Goldie toured his Metalheadz label here in the states doing both live PA's, Radio and DJ club dates. Plans are also in the works for tours by Formation records and State of the Art records to name a few. LTJ Bukem, one of jungle's most innovative DJ / Producers recently brought his crew through the states in support of their new album 'Logical Progression', released domestically on London / FFRR records. Bukems labels, Good Looking and Looking Good records have produced some of the most compelling drum & bass on the scene. LTJ Bukem aka Danny Bukem has been around since the beginning in London releasing his first record "Logical Progression" in '89. Since then he has produced a string of classic hardcore drum & bass tunes. We had an opportunity to speak to Danny Bukem in New York in the middle of the tour to get his impression on the Jungle scene, the U.S. lot and where the music is going. Dubshack: How many cities are involved in the tour ? LTJ Bukem: "We'll be in Los Angeles, San Fransisco, Pittsburgh, New York, Washington DC, Boston and Philadelphia." Dub: What do you think of the U.S. audience ? LTJ: "Absolutely Brilliant. We're getting good receptions everywhere we've played. I could easily be here for months." Dub: How do the crowds differ from London ? LTJ: "London has had jungle for 7 years. Jungle has been there for that long and to a certain extent the London crowd is a bit harder to please. I mean they have been exposed to so many people they really go mad." Dub: You have been involved in hardcore since the beginning, what has kept you involved and motivated for so long ? LTJ: "Well, its been my love for the music. The fact I won't do anything apart from what I want musically. The highs and lows of the music of being an artist and a producer. The way I look at it is this:L if all of it would have been so easy then would I have been so motivated? Of course it hasn't been easy at all. It's been quite a struggle at times, I think that's what's kept me going." Dub: We've noticed over the years the scene splitting and DJs styles segregating and now certain DJs are known for their particular style, how do you think this has changed the scene ? LTJ: "I mean one person can't do it all to the best of their ability. You can't be up there playing loads of different sets and getting the best material in all those sets, so it's fat easier for someone to concentrate on one style and take that style to it's fullest to get the best out of it. And there is so many styles now that you couldn't possibly keep up with them all. It's a good thing actually, with the opportunity for expansion." Dub: What do you think of the term 'Intelligent' to describe you music ? LTJ: "Absolutely Bollcks! The sooner people stop using that word the better, if what I play is 'Intelligent' then what is it that Hype plays? At the end of the day, I may play a different style of music but I'm not going to do those guys that have been there with me since day one by saying mine is 'Intelligent', I'll tell you why the media has labelled the music 'Intelligent', right, for x amount of years the media has been dissing this music and the whole jungle scene. Now it appears that over the last year or so the media has found something or perhaps a few influential people have started to like this music and say, "hang on a minute this THE BEATZ ARE ON A ROLL ITS YOU THERE CHASING....

Interview
is good music." So now the press have picked up on it and though "oh shit! We better write about it but we haven't got a name for it... so hang on... I'll tell you what, we'll call it Intelligent and if it makes it then it cool to be into it." It's like a journalistic embarrassment not realising about this music up until the last 12 months. Calling it Intelligent kind of gets you out of it for missing it for so long. The term intelligent is very wrong." Dub: What would you like to call your style ? LTJ: Music, just call it music. I mean you haven't got intelligent pop music have ya? Dub: You have been involved with the London club 'Speed' for some time now. Why do you think it has become so popular and what attracts people to it ? LTJ: "Well, I've left Speed as a resident DJ, I know that they are still carrying on, but, I've moved on to concentrate on the label. Speed started 5 years ago and I go back to this thing I said earlier, as soon as certain people have got with it, you seem to get like everyone and their mother going down to Speed and checking it out. I mean Speed's been running for years, people haven't been checking it, until last year. As I said, I left Speed to concentrate more on Logical. I can't really say I'm a resident at Speed and be down there when I can't. That's not fair to the club or the fans." Dub: With jungle so big in London and clubs running virtually every night of the week do you find yourself caught up in the fast pace of the scene there ? LTJ: "I can't get caught up in the whole thing. I'm sort of doing what I'm doing and I find it hard even now for me to get in the studio and get things done... there is so much to do. What I mean is, you can't be down at the club all night dong a proper job of DJing and then be getting up in a few hours to do your work. It's not so much a London thing... it's about getting a balance on what your doing." Dub: What do you think of hardstep, or what they are calling Techstep ? LTJ: "The lot of names is a load of Crap! I mean, "Hardstep", what's that? When you start categorising things it starts confusing things, people start expecting things. It's like "Oh your doing 'that'?" Well I'm not into 'that sound' so I'm not going to check you out. A whole load of politics get involved in things that don't need to be involved in. We're all part of one scene and within that scene you've got different factions, elements, styles, but it's still all one scene. I mean if you want to call it a scene, lets just call it a jungle scene. Same way pop music is pop music, you got Madonna, U2, etc... all types of artists but it's all pop music." Dub: There has been a definite turn towards the darker more aggressive sound these days. In '93 we saw the music turn dark in reaction to increasing attention by the media and record companies looking for the next big thing. Do you think the music is turning dark again to keep it underground ? LTJ: At the end of the day we've been through all that Phase before, "dark" is a form of light to me and it has nothing to do with the music. If you were there from the beginning you just progress through different styles and sounds. Like music has progressed from soul to hip hop, from funk to acid. It's just a logical progression. It's the same with this style. We're going back round again. You got guys making more musical stuff and you got guys wacking the beats down and putting this and that over it. We've gone through a sampling of soul, ragga, hip hop, and what will be next? Hard to say really. It's just a mans way of making music. Dub: Speaking of sampling, what do you think of hip hop ? LTJ: "The hip hop element that's coming through now can be quite good if it's done properly, with proper MC as a hip hop form of jungle. But I think sampling chunks out of Wu Tang... I don't think that really encourages hip hop boys to get into our music. Just like sampling Barrington Levy... I don't think that encourages those bands and those boys to come down and do tunes with us. That's not my way of doing what I do, that's just my opinion. Dub: Recently you made the cover of Musik Magazine in the UK, how has that impacted you ? LTJ: Yeah, any form of media is good... all the coverage that jungle is now getting. It hasn't been there before so it's sort of an opportunity to get our side of things across. I think now the media are willing to take those risks and do front covers on jungle and give it more coverage. Dub: What do you think of the U.S. DJs and producers, any advise ? LTJ: "I've heard some and I think the U.S. lot are making it headway. Advise? Make music from your heart. Don't make music you think someone would want to hear. That's only going to confuse both you and them. So if you start by making music from the heart, 190%, then you can only do the best for yourself." Dub: Many people say that drum & bass is stark and cold but we feel that there is a real emotional element to the music. What do you feel is the emotional impact to drum & bass ? LTJ: "I've been saying that for the longest time to the extent this music causes a total range of emotions... you got the peicful side and you got your moody side. It's very powerful. This music has that effect on me. It's like pictures, I come to the states for 2 weeks and in 3 years time I'll remember the tune that I played on this tour like the pictures I've taken in my camera." Dub: What have been the most surprising moments of the tour ? LTJ: "The amount of junglettes at the events. (laughs...) Also what has surprised me is how good the U.S. lot are at dancing to drum & bass. I've seen some serious moves on the dancefloor. I'm really spun out on the entire scene. It's so good to be here in the states and see so many people just lose it. The Logical Progression Tour hit 8 cities in 10 short days playing to packed clubs of enthusiastic junglists. Interview
A TRIBE CALLED QUEST - REPRESENT, REPRESENT. A Tribe Called Quest has released what will probably be called their most ambitious album yet. Of course, that can be said every time Tribe releases an LP. "People's..." broke ground. "The Low End..." and "Midnight Marauders" has been moving that ground ever since. "Beats Rhymes Life show us what kind of city Tribe can build with all the land they've moved for hip hop. Rolling through America right now is the Smokin Grooves tour. The promoters of this show have tried to marry hippie principles of love and bud with hip hop. The flyers, the posters, the print ads, all have that psychedelic look to them. Is it an attempt to get white boys and rockers out to see a hip hop show put on under the auspices of pot? With the rock friendly Fugees (they - I heard they play Jimi Hendrix) and Cypress Hill (we can slam-dance to Cypress, right?) leading the bill, plus the virtual promise of weed on the pluggers should be enough to generate some interest on their part. Are the promoters trying to show b-boys a new set of values? At least they'll get a few in the door with A Tribe Called Quest and Busta Rhymes on the bill as well. Now I can't say if the mix worked. I had a job to go to that night and missed the show. I wasn't too upset. The two groups I'd want to see, Tribe and Busta, I've seen before. So I pulled up to the World Music theatre early for my chance to talk to Tribe. "Is this where you thought A Tribe Called Quest was going to be when you all started out?" Yeah, this is right where Tribe should be. The new LP, Beats Rhymes Life puts Tribe right at home. Their evolution as individuals and as a crew has been constantly stepping forward. A Tribe Called Quest has never stopped once to repeat their past success. Where some groups seem to find a hook and stick on it, Tribe is always pushing hip hop music on to the next level. Always. Many artists talk like this, but few have the wax to really back it up the way A Tribe Called Quest does. "Do you ever get tired of this?" Tired of hip hop? Never. The music? Never. Of course there are some times where you want to slow down a little. Q-Tip has converted to Islam. He wants to get married. Phife is moving to Atlanta. But hip hop will never stop between Tribe. "Are you going to get involved in some more projects besides A Tribe Called Quest?" Right now Tribe has been doing some work with Blue Note, under the guise of The Umma. Check that out. Other than that, some more production is all that is planned for now. "So 'the Native Tongues have officially been reinstated', right?" That's right. You know them Stakes is High.

DOC SCOTT - SHADOW BOXING. 31 RECS Doc Scott Relaunches his label with one of the biggest tunes of the moment. Simplicity is the key with this tune! The break just rolls with one of the fastest EQ's you'll ever hear and it's definite riff fades into devastating effect. Due for release end of Sept watch out for "Shadow Boxing". One of the tunes of the year. MUSIC REMIX - PESHAY. GOOD LOOKING RECORDS As remixes go this is top class! You would think a classic like "Music" would be impossible to remix but Peshay has gone as far to surpass the original as possible. Peshay has taken the key elements of the tune and kept the basic arrangement the same but with the productions skills of Flytronix which has taken this tune to '96 and beyond! Also watch out for Peshay's "Galliano" remix for another class tune. THE SPIRIT - OPEN SPACES. TIMELESS The Spirit is definitely one of the up & coming artists for 1996. This is the best to date. Superb production with excellent breaks twisted to the max. Smooth strings and a nice jazzy riff make this tune a must for anyone on the musical tip. Also watch out for other releases on Timeless, C.I.A. or Fresh 86 as Open Spaces is due to be released on an LP scheduled for '97. DOM & ROLAND - UNTITLED. 31 RECS Blade Runner is a film that had definitely affected my direction in music in the past 10 years. Dom has obviously had similar influences from the film soundtrack as is displayed on the debut on Doc Scott's 31 imprint. The strings are sinister and course and the breaks and bass hard as hell. Only a few can roll tunes like this and Dom is definitely one of them. SOURCE DIRECT - REDLIGHTS & CRYSTAL HOUSE At last the long awaited new 12" from Source Direct. As usual flexing their light and darker sides on one piece of vinyl. Crystal House is my favourite with a new age funk feel that shows their creativity and longevity of Drum & Bass in the 90's. Redlights is an even deeper piece with fierce and complicated breaks in unison with some very 70's feeling strings, past and present in perfect harmony. Definitely a 12" for those who know. BY FRENZIC AND DARK NOISE ORIGINAL 2ND MOVEMENT MURPHY'S LAW - 20 SECONDS / FOLLOW THE LEADER MIXES I was well into the original and this is not a disappointment with the Robocop snip and powerful bass plus amen on a typical crowd friendly tip - 98%. FORWARD SOUND - THE WARNING / LOOK OUT Stompin intro with tip toe bass and eerie strings dropping into a steppy kind of number, In my eyes this labels looking kinda fat at the moment - Coolin' - 97%. APHRODITE MASH UP YER KNOW REMIX I'm sure you all remember the original of this, this is one sided press is on a very uplifting vibe with nice strings and all the same ingredients as before on a real bouncin vibe - 94%. TOWERBASE / RECUTS Full on funk intro with some swirling funky bass dropping into a deep but energetic number, the flip is recuts of "Mash Up" and another classic - 95%. WOMAN THAT ROLLS Typical Aphrodite number with the title vox and plenty of drum rolls into a nice bouncy jumpin number - One for the masses - 95%. BACK TO BASICS THE JB - ROCKIN WITH THE BEST / BREAKDOWN A side uses an old Roxanne sample for intro followed by some bouncy jump up bass. I prefer the flip with cuttin' beats, fat twangin' bass which drop into some catchy b line business with that winning dancefloor formula - 98%. BAD BEHAVIOUR - BUST THIS / COME CLOSER REMIXES My fave is the flip with that same funky noise and a super catchy bassline. Shuffling beats followed by amen set this one off, guaranteed to nod any head - ruff - 97%. CHRONIC VOL 5 "Dee Jay" is the vocal that starts this one off with some eerie strings and energetic amen givin it a pumpin vibe throughout the tune - ruff - 96%. VOL 7 Squelchy bit at start then into a fat House of Pain break (I'm sure you've all heard this one, tight beats and cool bass tones rollin out with amen soon following - ruff to fuck - 98%. VOL 8 "Technique" vox at start with pumpin beats and a couple of Wu snips. The vibe of this is just a roller with a fat bass tone soon following, the flip is more of a deep metallic amen number - 96%. DOPE DRAGON MASK & GANG RELATED - CONCENTRATION One of my faves at the moment with a mysterious shuffling intro then "Sshhh, I need Concentration" into supa swirly bass - Ruff, Ruff, Ruff - 100%. MASK & GANG RELATED - DICTATION / NOT NOT Yet another fat journey into sound from the D.D stables. With an Epic soundscape style intro from an old space film ? "Dictation" vocals drop into jump up bass soon followed by some rollin amen, both sides of this are ruff - as usual! - 97%. FORMATION TEQNIQ - THE RIOT / HOLD IT NOW This tune is smashing it at the moment. Stompy intro with a wild west feel to it. Fat Fat bass and a real funky vibe, sure to please - 98%. Barcode - New Dance / Soundz of Mozart?!? Classical intro with stompin beats and the "New Dance" vocal dropping into rickety beats and wobbly jump up bass, definite crowd mover - 96%. JOKER DREAM TEAM - SURVIVAL OF THE FIT / MUSIC FOR THE PEOPLE Deep stringy intro moving into hard edge beats and fat bass on a more militant tip, ruff. Flip is on more of a rollout tip - 96%. Dynamic Duo - The Click / Kalifornia Stringess or not? Stompy intro with rap snips going into tuff beats and some old skool wobbly bass keepin' it tuff with fat edits, flip is a stompy roller - 95%. MOVING SHADOW DEEP BLUE & BLAME - TRANSITIONS / RE TRANSITIONS Both sides deep rollin vibes with hard stabbin beats, twisted piercey bleeps and abstract strings, bare quality, one for the smokers - 97%. Higher Sense - Out There / Everything Eerie atmospheric intro with some cool effects rollin it out in a militant tip, energetic but not too harsh beats keep the flava for this one with a real dirty underground feel - 97%. PENNY BLACK UFO VOL 1 My fave on this is the flip with a funky intro and amen stabs building up into the full amen workout, pumpin hard. Female vocals and trumpets follow to keep it ruff - 96%. UFO VOL 2 Intro has a bit of that eastern promise with supa shuffling beats rollin it out with metally effects for ages then comes snarey amen to pick up the pace. Flip is a fat steppa - 95%. MASTERMIND - MIDNIGHT SAX / FULL MOON Smooth intro with nice effects for a while then comes shuffly beats keepin' it on a chill which are soon joined by amen to pump it out - 95%. PARADOX - A CERTAIN SOUND / DEEP SLEEP Wicked mirky dark intro with angry bass, some hard pitched down amen, deep echoing vox. Vibe on a dark trancey feel. Flip has scattered amen with dreamy vocals on a dark tip - best yet from this label in my opinion - 98%. RINSE OUT SAPPO - DING DONG BASS / VERY VERY DARK Supa Sappo comes with a fat number, I don't know if the bass is Ding Dong but it's certainly different, the Sappo flavour shines through in this with that unmistakable vibe - rollin northern style - 96%. SAPPO - HOT SHOT / SQUAT "Pop quiz Hot Shot". Twisted funky bass and plenty of beats, this doesn't do as much for me as the last - 90%. RUNNINZ NU GUN - BRING INZ / GARMZ Some Don Corleoni business for intro which drops into some fat grinding bass and stepping beats, same type of flava on flip - 95%.

Interview
DJ DEMO happy rollers NAME: Mark, AGE: 25, LIVES: Dover, Kent WHAT WERE YOU DOING BEFORE YOU GOT INTO THE MUSIC? I got into the music when I was younger, it came mainly through hip hop and then it moved onto hip house. I then bought my first turntables and that's where my inspiration come from. CAN YOU REMEMBER THE FIRST PLACE YOU PLAYED? 'Brave World' in Maidstone was the first place but my first major event was 'Reincarnation' in Herne Bay. WHO DID YOU SEE AS AN INSPIRATION BACK THEN? Loftgroover, Shaggy & Breeze, Dave Angel, and Paul Oakenfold to name a few. HAVE YOU EVER WORKED ON RADIO? I've never done any radio shows before, basically radios don't exist in Kent. HAVE YOU PLAYED ABROAD? Not Yet, but I have Australia lined up for November. WHEN DID YOU FIRST GET A TASTE FOR PRODUCTION? After my first release, I got a taste for production. But after a while I felt more comfortable doing my own engineering so I bought my own equipment and learnt the ropes the hard way. DO YOU LIKE ANY OTHER MUSIC GENRES BESIDES 4 BEAT? I am right into house and Hip Hop. DO YOUR OTHER MUSICAL TASTES INSPIRE YOU IN WHAT YOU PRODUCE? Yes, I make all different types of music including Gabba, House, and Trance. My own interest is in 4 Beat / Hardcore. HAVE YOU EVER WORKED UNDER A PSEUDONYM, IF SO WHAT AND WHO FOR? I work under the name of Happy Rollers on Universal records the first release '95 style' was one of my first big tunes. On Kniteforce I go under the name of Inner Access and for JAL it's just DJ Demo. I also work with DJ Ham under the guise of Rush & Puppie on Cool as it Gets records. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT PA'S AND HAVE YOU DONE ANY? I think PA's are good. I think you should be able to see the people behind the music. Some of the PA's I have done include Fubar & Fusion where I PA'ed Happy Rollers. WHAT DJS PROMOTE YOUR TUNES ON DUB? Slipmatt, Brisk, Dougal, Force & Styles, Seduction, Vinylgroover, and Hixxy to name a few. WHAT PRODUCERS DO YOU THINK ARE DOING IT AT THE MOMENT? Force & Styles are the boys, Slipmatt, Eruption, SL2, Ham, Brisk, Dougal, Fade, D'Zyne, Hixxy, Justin Time and Billy Bunter. WHO DO YOU THINK PUT ON THE BEST EVENTS? Helter Skelter and United Dance do the best parties followed by Dreamscape, Vibealite, The Pleasuredome, and Hardcore Heaven. WHAT EVENTS DO YOU LIKE PLAYING AT? Helter Skelter and definitely The Pleasuredome. WHAT DJS DO YOU RATE AT THE MOMENT? I think all DJs are good but in their own style. But I think Slipmatts mixing is tight. HOW DO YOU THINK THE SCENE IS AT THE MOMENT? The scene at the moment is jumping and definitely doing it. WHERE DOES THE NAME DEMO COME FROM? The name comes from Demonstration. I always take great pride in the way I play and how I play. WHICH MCS DO YOU RATE AT THE MOMENT? 6Q, Charlie B, and Sharkey to name but a few. WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR BEST MOMENT'S IN THE MUSIC? Making my first tune and hearing it played by Slipmatt at Elevation. Also playing at Helter Skelter is always a good thing and whenever I hear one of my tunes being played out. WHAT ARE YOU ASPIRATIONS FOR 96 / 97? To continue making good quality music that people want to hear. To get my new record label moving which I started with Dave @ Helter Skelter and is named Voyager records. I want to get all the top boys on the label and I want to move nearer to London as Kent is too far away. SPECIAL THANKS TO: My girlfriend Julie - god knows how she puts up with me. Slipmatt for all the support and being a great mate. Ham, Dave from Helter, Chris, Gabby and Daz from UD. Penny & Fiona from HS, Gary from Ibealite, Lee from Mo's, Nigel from Future Vinyl and anyone else I've missed you know who you are! PLEASE LISTEN TO MY DEMO... WORDS BY NEIL

Interview
WHAT WAS THE ORIGINAL INSPIRATION TO START THE LABEL? DARREN: I WAS DOING TRACKS THAT HAD DEEP HOUSE INFLUENCES THAT WERE ON A DIFFERENT VIBE THAN OUR TRACKS ON JUICE AND SPLASH, SO WE STARTED UP XPRESSIVE AS AN OUTLET FOR THEM. WHEN WAS THIS? OCTOBER 1995. WHO IS THE LABEL RUN BY? ME (DARREN), MY BROTHER (JEFF) AND DAZ (UNDERCOVER AGENT). WHO PRODUCES THE TRACKS ON THE LABEL? SO FAR, UP TO XPRESSIVE 006, I'VE PRODUCED THEM ON MY OWN UNDER THE NAMES [PARADOX], FELLOWSHIP AND SUBJECT TO REASON. BUT WE'RE ON THE LOOK OUT FOR OTHER ARTISTS. DO YOU DO YOUR OWN PRODUCTION OR HIRE AN ENGINEER? I DO MY OWN. HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN PRODUCTION? I STARTED MAKING ROUGH DEMOS IN 1990 ON A BASIC SAMPLER AND SEQUENCER, AND IN 1991 DANNY DONNELLY HELPED US SET UP OUR OWN LABEL CALLED RISE PRODUCTIONS. WE THEN RELEASED OUR FIRST 12" WHICH WAS CALLED 'AUDIO ANALYSIS EP', AND IT CONTINUED FROM THERE. HAVE YOU HAD ANY RELEASES ON OTHER LABELS? I'VE GOT A TRACK COMING OUT ON DUSH TEST CALLED 'HOMELAND' BY WAYWARD MIND, BUT APART FROM THAT EVERYTHING ELSE IS COMING OUT ON XPRESSIVE. HAVE YOU ANY OTHER INVOLVEMENT IN THE MUSIC SCENE? I MAKE DEEP HOUSE & GARAGE TRACKS WITH ALAN JINX CHAMBERLAIN UNDER THE NAMES 'THE TRUTH', 'HARD MOTION' AND 'SOULFUL BEHAVIOUR' AND WE'VE HAD RELEASES ON FRUIT TREE, GRASS GREEN, BLACK VINYL AND HOTT RECORDS. I ALSO WORK WITH STEVE LLOYD UNDER 'THE BALOUGA BOYS' AND WE'VE HAD STUFF OUT ON COWBOY, STRESS RECORDS AND DMC, APART FROM THAT I RUN JUICE AND SPLASH RECORDS WITH JEFF AND DAZ, AND ME AND DAZ PRODUCE TRACKS FOR JUICE UNDER THE NAME 'M.T.S'. DO YOU HAVE A DJ FOR THE CAMP AS IT WERE? WE HAVE A DJ CALLED 'JUST JONES' WHO IS RESIDENT AT THE COMPLEX IN ISLINGTON, AND I ALWAYS SEND DATS TO DR S.GACHET AND HE GIVES ME AN INSTANT RESPONSE ON HOW THE TRACKS DROP WHEN HE PLAYS THEM OUT. WHAT PROMOTIONAL METHODS DO YOU THINK WORK BEST? REALLY, THE ONLY PROMOTION WE DO IS TO SEND THE TRACKS OUT ON DAT TO GACHET, FABIO, BUKEM, ORBIT AND RONI SIZE AND WE PLACE REGULAR ADVERTS IN A FEW MAGAZINES. HOW DO YOU FEEL THE SCENE IS PROGRESSING MUSICALLY AT THE MOMENT? THERE ARE SO MANY TALENTED PRODUCERS OUT THERE, THE MUSIC IS GETTING BETTER ALL THE TIME. SOME OF THE TRACKS AROUND ARE PURECLASS. THE PRODUCERS I ESPECIALLY RATE ARE INTENSE, PFM, AQUASKY, BLAME, BIG BUD, LTJ BUKEM, ALEX REECE, ADAM F, SOURCE DIRECT, THE LIST GOES ON. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BEST RELEASE ON THE LABEL SO FAR FOR EITHER SALES OR RECOGNITION? RECOGNITION WISE, I WAS VERY PLEASED WITH THE REACTIONS WE GOT FROM 'CELEBRATE LIFE' BY FELLOWSHIP, AND AT THE MOMENT WE ARE GETTING A REALLY GOOD RESPONSE TO 'SHAKE IT' / 'CONSPIRACY'. SO I THINK THAT WILL BE THE BEST SELLER. DO YOU GO FOR A SET VIBE WITH THE RELEASES ON THE LABEL? WELL, SO FAR THE RELEASES HAVE BEEN OF SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT STYLES, BUT BASICALLY I'M INTO ANYTHING THAT'S REALLY DEEP, JAZZY, MOODY OR ATMOSPHEIC. ANY PLANS FOR AN XPRESSIVE ALBUM? WE'RE ONLY UP TO NO. 6 AT THE MOMENT. BUT ONCE WE'VE HAD A FEW MORE OUT THERE, WE'RE GOING TO DO AN 'XPRESSIVE VOLUME 1' ALBUM. WHAT OTHER GOALS OR PROJECTS DO YOU HAVE FOR THE LABEL IN THE FUTURE? TO INVOLVE OTHER ARTISTS AND JUST TO KEEP THE VIBE ON THE DEEPER TIP. WHAT OTHER LABELS DO YOU RATE AND WHY? I PARTICULARLY RATE CREATIVE SOURCE, GOOD LOOKING, LOOKING GOOD, METALHEADS, AUDIOMAZE, TIMELESS AND MATERIAL. IN WHAT DIRECTION DO YOU THINK THE 'INTELLIGENT' SCENE IS GOING? LIKE I SAID EARLIER, THE MUSIC IS GOING FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH AND NOW WITH ALL THE MAJOR RECORD LABELS GETTING SO INVOLVED, I JUST HOPE THAT ARTISTS STICK TO THEIR OWN STYLE AND NOT GET PRESSURED INTO CHANGING THEIR SOUND TO APPEAL TO A WIDER AUDIENCE. SHOUTS? PHIL & LANCE @ VINYL, DR S.GACHET, LTJ DUKEM, DJ ORBIT, FABIO, RONI SIZE, ALEX CONSTANTINIDES, FRENZIC, LION, DANNY @ SUBBASE, DANNY BREAKS, RICHARD & EBONY, A-SIDES, JUST JONES AND CHRIS IN MIAMI. XPRESSIVE DISCOGRAPHY 001. PARADOX - "PRAY" & "FROM MY MIND" 002. FELLOWSHIP - "CELEBRATE LIFE" & "BRIGHTER DAY" 003. SUBJECT TO REASON - "SYMPHONIX PT.1" & "SYMPHONIX PT.2" 004. Interview
ANDY C INTERVIEW PART TWO AFTER THE EXTREMELY GRIPPING PART I OF ANDY C WE BRING YOU THE FOLLOW UP WHICH FEATURES PLENTY MORE JUICY INFO ABOUT THE MAN BEHIND RAM RECORDS... ANDY & ANT RECENTLY DID A REMIX OF BUSTA RHYMES' "WOO HAH" FOR ELEKTRA RECORDS "THIS CAME ABOUT THROUGH THE PROMOTIONS COMPANY WHO WERE DEALING WITH THE HIP HOP MIX WHO PHONED US UP AND SAID THEY HAD A REMIX FOR US BUT WOULD'NT SAY WHAT IT WAS. WE WOULD HAVE LIKED TO HAVE SPENT MORE TIME ON THE MIX BUT THEY ONLY GAVE US 36 HOURS AFTER WE RECIEVED THE DAT." THIS PROMTED ME TO FIND OUT IF THERE WAS ANY MORE MAINSTREAM WORK IN THE PIPELINE "THERE ARE OFFERS FLOATING ABOUT, BUT AT THE MOMENT WE FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE CONCENTRATING ON OUR OWN STUFF. WE HAVE OUR OWN ALBUM PLANNED FOR RELEASE IN SEPTEMBER WHICH WILL BE A RAM SHOWCASE FEATURING ALL OF THE RAM ARTISTS SUCH AS MYSELF, SHIMON, ORIGIN UNKNOWN AND DESIRED STATE INCLUDING SOME VIP MIXES AND A FEW TRACKS THAT WE MAY NOT HAVE RELEASED ON 12". AS FAR AS SIGNING A MAJOR DEAL GOES "IT DEPENDS ON WHAT THEY WERE SAYING, OBVIOUSLY THE DEAL HAS GOT TO BE RIGHT AND WE WOULD HAVE TO HAVE FULL ARTISTIC CONTROL. I DON'T SEE SIGNING A MAJOR DEAL AS SELLING OUT IT DEPENDS ON WHAT DEAL YOUR SIGNING AND THE TYPE OF THINGS YOU ARE PREPARED TO DO, IF IT'S GOING TO BRING NEW PEOPLE IN CONTACT WITH THE MUSIC IT'S A GOOD THING BUT FOR NOW I'M JUST TRYING TO CONCENTRATE ON THE RAM SIDE OF THINGS". I'VE NOTICED A LOT OF INDEPENDANT LABELS ARE DOING ALBUMS NOW, HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THIS" I SEE IT AS BEING A GOOD MEANS TO REACH A WIDER AUDIENCE. BECAUSE WITH ALBUMS YOU ARE GETTING BETTER PROMOTION IN MORE OF THE HIGH STREET STORES." DO YOU GET MANY DEMOS FROM UP COMING ARTISTS ? "YEAH, SOME STUFF IS GOOD, AND SOME ARE JUST STARTING OUT. I LIKE TO PHONE THEM UP AND GIVE THEM SOME TIPS AS MOST OF THEM JUST WANT OPINIONS, BUT A LOT OF THE STUFF IS JUST NOT RIGHT FOR THE LABEL." WITH ANDY BEING KNOWN FOR BOTH COLLABORATION AND SOLO WORK I THOUGHT I'D ASK HIM WHICH ONE HE PREFFERED "DON'T PREFER ANY, MOST TIME I JUST GO IN THERE AND HAVE AN IDEA IN MY HEAD AND JUST ROLL IT OUT FAIRLY QUICKLY. I LIKE COLLABORATING, ESPECIALLY ME + ANT BECAUSE WE CAN BOTH JUST SIT THERE,
Page 32

Interview
BECAUSE WERE BOTH PROGRAMMERS WE CAN THROW IDEAS AT EACH OTHER. SOMETIMES IT'S MORE INSPIRATIONAL TO WORK WITH SOMEONE BECAUSE YOU'VE GOT TWO MINDS FEEDING IT, YOU DEFINITELY GET SOME IDEAS THAT YOU WOULDN'T HAVE THOUGHT OF YOURSELF. WHICH DO YOU PREFER, DJ'ING OR PRODUCTION? "DON'T PREFER ONE TO THE OTHER, I SEE THEM IN MY CASE ON AN EQUAL FOOTING. DO YOU GO FOR A SET STYLE WITH PRODUCTION ? "I LIKE TO BE EXPERIMENTAL BUT AS FAR AS A SET STYLE GOES YOU DON'T SIT THERE AND THINK WELL I'M GOING TO MAKE A TUNE EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE LAST ONE. SOMETIMES YOUR NEXT TUNE WILL HAVE ELEMENTS OF THE LAST BECAUSE THERE WERE NEW THINGS YOU FOUND OUT AND YOUR TRYING TO USE THEM AGAIN BUT TAKE THEM A BIT FURTHER. IT'S KIND OF A FOLLOW ON, WE DON'T LOOK FOR A SET STYLE, IT'S JUST A STYLE THAT MUTATES AS YOU GO ON. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT PA'S? "I'VE DONE LAZERDROME, ELEVATION, LIFE UTOPIA, AND GREAT YARMOUTH. THESE WERE MAINLY IN '93, I WOULDN'T WANT TO DO A PA AGAIN TO JUST STAND THERE AND PRETEND TO PLAY THE KEYBOARD, IT'S A VERY HARD THING TO GO OUT AND DO A LIVE PA. I THINK PA'S SHOULD BE LIVE, NOT JUST STAND THERE AND PRETEND. THE FUTURE "AS LONG AS EVERYTHING KEEPS GOING AS IT IS NOW I'LL BE HAPPY. I JUST WANT TO HELP THE PROGRESSION AND RECOGNITION OF THE MUSIC. WHAT OTHER DJ'S DO YOU RATE ? "I RATE A LOT OF THE DJS ON THE SCENE SUCH AS RANDALL, HYPE, SWIFT, FABIO, GROOVERIDER. IT'S NOT A CASE OF RATING PEOPLE. ALL THE BIG NAME DJS WOULDN'T BE THERE IF THEY HADN'T GOT THEIR OWN SET STYLE AND DONE THEIR BIT SO I RATE ANYBODY WHO IS OUT THERE AND DOING IT. WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES A GOOD PROMOTER ? "SOMEONE WHO'S NOT AFRAID TO MAYBE CHANGE THE FORMULA AND PUT A FEW STYLES TOGETHER AND DIFFERENT STYLES WITHIN THE SAME MUSIC. SOMEONE WHO DOESN'T SKINT ON THE MONEY WHEN IT COMES TO DOING THE PRODUCTION AND THE RIGHT DJS. THE END..... Scream at the Cross are here to give you a good night out. We at Scream have been into this music for a very long time and have noticed the lack of good quality clubs that cater for upfront drum & bass. We feel that there are a lot of you who are older & wiser and appreciate the way the music is progressing. Interview
Names: Jonathan Wright DJ Hostyle, John Williams DJ Jon Dow Ages: Both 24. Lives: Great Yarmouth. How did you both meet? We first met at school. Then didn't see each other for a couple of years. We then met out at a party and the rest is history. How did you first get interested in production? Jonathan: I started messing around on a Casio sampler keyboard when I was about 15. At that time I was into early house and acid. John: I also had an interest in music but first started with an Amiga computer doing really basic stuff and progressed from there. What was your first release? Our first release was "Technophone" on Sheffields "Ozone" records in 91. With "Belief" (Which was big in Japan) & Vitamin E a year later. John: Our first major release on Formation was "Best of both Worlds" but we did a couple of white labels for F - Project. How did you get hooked up with Formation records? A friend of ours DJ Dance was doing tracks for SS. And we gave him a tape, he liked what we did and it went from there. Have you worked for any other labels? We did a jazzy track for the 'Storm from the East' album on Movin' Shadow. John: I have engineered tunes for JMJ & Richie on Shadow and Good Looking records. Have you ever worked under any pseudonyms? We have done a white label called "The East Coasters", this should be out by the time you read this, also a few new tracks yet to be titled. Do either of you DJ, if so tell all? Jonathan: I've been DJing since '90 at local clubs and events. We formed 'Teqniq' in '91 and started playing back to back as a duo. We played at 'Intense' in Norwich as residents in '91 - '92, teaming up with Contagious as our MC. At the moment we are residents at "Camoflauge" and we've played at The Pleasuredome and Future in Leicester. John: We would like to DJ more as you get a better understanding of the music. Putting this knowledge to good use in the studio. Do you do your own production or hire an engineer? Jonathan: We have our own studio, John does all the engineering for everyone. He's a bit of a technology freak. He used to be known as 'Techno John'. Have you any other involvement in the music scene? We used to have a weekly 3 hour show on a local radio "Coastal Radio" playing upfront jungle & drum & bass. But we are always open to new ideas and projects. Do you go for a set vibe with your releases? We usually say "Right, we want to do this type of track" but sometimes it ends up completely different. As long as it sounds fresh were happy. What has been your best release for either sales or recognition? Our best track to date is "The Riot" on Formation, played by Randall, Bryan G, Rap & Grooverider to name a few. Also "The Bass" on the 'Highly Recommended' album which was cained by GrooveRider, Big Up!! Any plans for an album? John: I'd like to do an album but have no plans to at the moment. Jonathan: We just want to keep the name 'Teqniq' on a high profile. What other labels do you rate and why? Dope Dragon, V, Philly Blunt, Good Looking, Movin' Shadow, Dread, Frontline & Formation of course. And anyone making fresh original tunes. What goals or projects have you got for the future? "East Coasters" on the way. "Storm from the East 2" on Movin' Shadow. More Teqniq 12's on Formation. And a few more projects in the pipeline. Shouts: SS, Warren G, Anthony, Jo, Tanya, SHO Cru, Groove, Roni Size, Rap, Ray Keith, PFM, JMJ & Richie, Bukem, Peshay, MC Contagious, Jo Jo Rock, EZ Rollers, all the East Coast crew too many to mention. Respect. To Book TEKNIQ call Jo @ Formation: 0116 253 0048
