Interview
MC GQ Gary or GQ as he prefers to be known is aged 24 and lives in East London. As with many people his roots lie in Rare Groove, Hip Hop, Soul, Funk, Jazz and Electro, he first got into chatting at school during the Breakdancing phase throwing down lyrics over Hip Hop tapes. Soon after he became involved in a Sound system along with 3 other guys playing the above mentioned music this is where he first started chatting on a system. As time went on he linked up with 3 ex AWOL DJ's Richie Fingers, Trax and Frankie 'Shag' Bones and they would do little jams in Pubs, Clubs and little illegal do's in warehouses, he then met Bonnie (Jungle Soundclash) and JP (World Dance / AWOL) which led on to work at Rygate lane and Raindance. As he had known JP for a while playing for him a parties such as Beyond Therapy and No Mans Land at Sterns he was the natural choice for an MC when AWOL started at the Paradise club, this club was running for 3 years and he feels this is the place where he got his break. He currently listens to Soul Funk, Rap and Jazz and likes to go out to other types of clubs "I work in the scene and I don't want it to be my life". His musical influences on the mic include Funk and Jazz and likes to work with DJ's such as Micky Finn, Frost, Randall, Ron, SL, Groove, Fabio and the list goes on because of the music they play, he also rates Bukem and likes to go out and listen to those types of beats. As far as radio work is concerned he has done Kool FM a few times and Radio1 for the '1 in the Jungle' shows and does get approached for radio work but feels that's not really for him. He has loads of favourite places to play in particular AWOL, World Dance, Lazerdrome, Desire, Thunder & Joy and Roast. He has worked abroad in many places such as Japan, USA, Germany, Greece and Amsterdam, I went on to ask him what he thought of the scene's abroad "It's different because you've got to remember that the scene originated from London, it's just like a big tree that branches out and spreads, you know in London that you are going to get the real thing whereas the other countries are a bit slow. I think Germany is on it and they know what is going down. About a month back myself, Mickey Finn, Bukem, Rap, Bryan G, Peshay, Navigator and Conrad went over there to a party with a capacity of 2,500 and it was wicked they were going mad. In Japan the people have got so much respect for you, we Atmosphere 10

did 4 clubs 2 of which were rockin, the design of the clubs out there is quite different aswell and the night life out there is really good but I think the whole buzz is just being in Japan. We went to the States and did LA, California, Miami, Florida and Chicago and overall Chicago was the best with about 3,000 in a warehouse which was rockin". At the moment he sees the scene over here as being very fast with the music splitting into a kinda 'Speed' style and going back to a more drum 'n' bass style with the Hip Hop element coming through proving that everytime you think the music is about to get stale something else comes "The music is very experimental and as long as you've got a good engineer who will try anything it will stay that way. As far as the 'Speed' stuff is concerned some people say it's this or that but at the end of the day if you go to 'Speed' or 'Blue Note' that's what you are going for, I rate what Bukem, Doc Scott and people like that and I've got no end of respect for Bukem and Fabio for sticking to their guns just by saying well this is what I play and that's that". As far as making tunes is concerned with the exception of chatting on various tracks including 'Roll the beats' for DJ Hype, 'Retreat' remix for L Double and a new track for Kenny Ken he did a few things about 3 years ago with a guy called Terry but wasn't confident and nothing happened with it, he does have plans to get involved with some tracks in the future be it Drum 'n' Bass, Rap, Swing or whatever. He has a 15 year old cousin Crystal who sings like Brandy, another cousin and an uncle who have a sound and in the hood where he comes from there is a lot of talent around with people involved in all aspects of music he is just someone who broke through "I weren't doing shit and started doing this thing and became eager and wanted everybody to hear me and at that point I was very potent because I wanted to be recognised". He did DJ for Bonnie a few years ago but just messing about as his talent is MCing rather than DJing. After doing a 2 1/2 year business course at college with the aim of opening up a clothes shop stocking garments and Italian shoes courtesy of his 2 brothers he decided that wasn't for him and got introduced to a photographer which led on to meeting Cathy who taught him a lot about photography and he began working at fashion shows and the like, shortly after things in the music scene started getting much better for him and after trying to do both photography was put on the shelf, but if at any time the music crashed its good to have something to fall back on rather than putting all your eggs in one basket. The only words he would give to up coming MC's would be just to keep striving and let your talent shine through and don't forget versatility is the key. Shouts to all family, friends and all the Promoters, DJ's and MC's Keepin the shit real......

Interview
Second Movement Recordings The label first started in November 1994 with a track by myself (DJ Asend) called 'Can't Hold Back' which was a bit commercial sounding but sold quite well for the first track on the label, it was also licensed to a couple of compilations inc 'Jungle Mania 2'. The reason I started was because I could do tracks and put them out without problems of waiting for other peoples tunes to be put out first. As far as where the name come from I'll leave that to your imagination. The label is run by myself and an anonymous partner who financed it from the start but he leaves all the running to me. To date I have worked for Sub Base under the names of Basic Movements and Sound Station, Moving Shadow with Ultravibe as Dead Dread and Apollo 13 on B2B. I have also just started a track for Reinforced which will be nice to do something for them and possibly Ram and Metalheads but we will see how that goes. The first time I got a real taste for production was after I did 'What kind of World' with Ultravibe, I really got into the way it was all put together so I brought a little studio and started to put my own tracks together. I was really into production back in 1987 but I didn't have the right people to help me get into it, then it all suddenly got rollin. Before producing I was a Painter & Decorator working on building sites but even then in the back of my head I knew I was going to have something to do with the music. At the time I never knew how big 'Dread Bass' was gonna get and I know I will probably never have a track as big as that again so I'll just keep things rollin and hope for the best. At the moment the DJing is really slow because all the clubs are closing down due to people with attitudes fuckin it up, but it went very well this summer havin a residency at the Institute in Birmingham and playing in Germany. I was on An agency called Direct Drive which got me some work but have now moved to Florida so at the moment Unique artists are running things. I have done a few PA'S the best being Voodoo Magic and the Lazerdrome. When writing a track I always try to be different but try to keep the same style as Dread Bass but I know that tune is in the past so it is very difficult to be original, I definitely want to keep away from the reverse B line, I think that the style is definitely rollin drums and rollin bass. The scene is changing dramatically but which way I will go I don't know. The music that inspires me is the old House because that is where the music we listen to comes from so I listen to all the old stuff and take from them samples which might be useful in the track I am working on, I also get inspiration from people like Roni Size and Metalheads. The way people promote tunes is definitely through DJ's, if it wasn't for the DJ's playing the tunes people would not hear the stuff we all make so a lot of respect goes out to all the DJ's. I use people like Micky Finn, Grooverider, Bryan G, Kenny Ken and all the magazines like Atmosphere, Eternity, DJ & Knowledge. My future projects will include starting another label called 'World Clique', Merchandise for the label, An Album, work with Micky Finn (Urban Shakedown) and maybe some work with SS. Shouts to Micky Finn (Keep hammering our stuff), Grooverider (The Originator), Ratty, Fibre Optlc, Rap, Rob @ Ruff Tone & finally the raver - leave the guns at home. Atmosphere 20

THE CLUB ZONE DESIRE 95, SAT 28TH OCT - CLUB UN - TOTTENHAM. First time at this relatively new venue and I have got to say that I was impressed. Large main arena with a bar, diner and plenty of seating. Lights were dazzling and the sound system was booming, only problem with this venue is that parking can be a bit of a mare as the venue is on a main road with no car park. On the night in question we arrived at about 12 midnight with both guest list and paying queues in full swing but the security got them in as quick as possible, we entered to hear the last few tunes from DJ Zinc who was followed by Ellis Dee, I had to go and play upstairs so I didn't hear much of Ellis's set. Upstairs is fairly small but comfortable with a bar, a seating area and a small dance area, the music policy for this arena was educational with the likes of Fabio, Kemistry & Storm, Breaze, Model and myself with LTJ Bukem and Loxy being the only no shows of the night, when I returned downstairs Darren J was smashing the now rammed venue with Fearless and Rage on the mic who in turn was followed by my current fave Andy C who as usual tore it up making it hard work for Phantasy who played more of the classic tunes but still kept the crowd bubbling, by this time the venue was hotter than a heatwave in the desert. Next up was the man of the moment Hype rinsing it out to the max who was followed by Rap, Grooverider and Randall respectively. Overall I think a good night was had by all with a pumpin sound system in a fresh venue. Frenzic. PLEASUREDOME - SAT 7TH OCT - SKEGNESS. Once again I'm at Skegness on Lincolnshires East Coast home of Pleasuredome. For the benefit of inside. The club consists of 3 arenas (5 on Atomic nights) playing Happy Hardcore and House & Garage, with Techno and Jungle on alternate weeks. All the arenas are themed and are all very well set out, In fact to try and capture the theme of the club on paper is almost impossible and the only way to do it justice is to check it out for yourself, you won't be disappointed. The majority of my night was spent in the main arena where the likes of Slipmatt, Sy, Dougal, Fergus and Rush were tearin' it up with some excellent bouncy sets and although the place wasn't packed there was a good atmosphere throughout the night. The light show certainly left nothing to the imagination and seemed to bombard you constantly from all angles, and when you add this to the huge clowns face with lazers coming from its eyes you get a very trippy arena, (Luv it). The Techno and House rooms weren't quite as busy as the main arena but DJ's such as Scorpio, M Zone, The Alchemist, Jon Lancaster and Thomas Tuft were much appreciated none the those who haven't been here before I have to say that this is the most intelligent and enchanting venue I've ever seen. A lot of time, thought and money has gone into the building of the place and it was well worth the effort. It is set in the middle of the Fantasy Island amusement park surrounded by various rides and side shows, and you could quite easily totally lose it before even getting Atmosphere 21

less. I think that out of all the clubs the Pleasure dome is one that deserves an all night License, and I know that Gary and the crew are trying their hardest to get one. Stick with it lads, you deserve it !! SFA Crew. UNITED DANCE - FRI 13TH SEPT - STEVENAGE ARTS & LEISURE. As usual UD put on an amazing show of music and lights, compared with the last event the queues and searches looked much more organised and by 10:30pm the inside was pretty rammed. The main arena was mainly Happy however there were some of the top Jungle DJ's present too catering for everyone's taste in music. The arena was large, hot and incredibly buzzing. The stage was occupied not just by professional dancers but also the blatant happy ravers loving the attention. Another thing that was spot on were the lights which were definitely the best I have seen at an event so far. The atmosphere in the main arena was mostly uplifting and kept a constant smile on everyone's face creating a happy vibe throughout the night, arena 2 2 was also packed out by people who if not raving just wanted to sit down and chill out. Although Majika, Stixman and Sharkey provided uplifting vocals, MC MC should be given all due respect for getting the crowd buzzing. The Happy sets were absolutely mad and fair play to Vibes for Singing it loud for his last one. Big respect is due to Mickey Finn for playing the most menacing set of the entire night, another wicked set was played by Slipmatt who ripped down the place with some metal tunes and should be thanked for accepting the request for the last one. The crowd however were disappointed as Sy decided not to show (I later heard that he had trouble on the motorway). On the whole the event was very successful and definitely one not to be missed. Mariam (Review krew). TRIBAL GATHERING - MUNICH - NOV 4TH 1995. On arrival to Munich, we were welcomed by the minus 14 temperature and snow, which was quite a buzz, what with being able to throw a few snowballs at a few heads. We ventured to the mass location of, Munich's old airport. It took 20 minutes to walk round the 8 empty arenas, which was later to be filled by an excess of 20,000 ravers. Well things kicked off at about 6p, and by that time there was a considerable amount of people edging there way through the doors & friendly security. Once in you were greeted by he overwhelming clarity and quality of the sound system, and had to be the best to date I can remember hearing. We didn't really know where to start our adventure, we wondered aimlessly arena to arena trying to spot a few recognisable and familiar faces to share in the memories, and later to reminisce over this event, which there were, which only elevated the level of enjoyment that was to be had by all. On to the attractions of the night, who to start with, it wasn't possible to take appreciation of all the DJ's, you were spoilt with choice, what with a total of 63 DJ's, playing from Garage, House, Jungle, Trance to the best in Techno. It was the kind of event no one should have missed, and for sure the event of the year in Germany. The line up of names was amazing DJ Dag, Carl Cox, Mark Spoon, Laurent Garnier, Marco Zaffarano, Tanith, Miss Djax, Dave Angel, DJ Hell, Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills, Marshall Jefferson, Paul Oakenfold, the list goes on. The individuals that played outstanding for me were Tin Tin who rocked Planet Erotica into a frenzy, DJ Hell played 2 sets but went ballistic in the Ultraschall and let off with some serious bangers, Carl Cox as always was the life and soul of the party, Atmosphere 22

Laurent Garnier played a mixture of all sorts and to finish off Monika from Disko B played the After party set in the Ultraschall and played an excellent set. There was a total of 13 live PA's Chemical Brothers, CJ Bolland, Orbital (who I didn't personally see, but the feedback was they need to sort out some fresh PA material as they were as usual playing their golden oldies) The Advent, Mark NRG, Plastikman. Most impressive for me was the Chemical Brothers with their original style of heavy break beats, bass and frequencies slammin and bangin in a fresh style and fashion, which got the Starship Universe bumpin & jumpin. Plastikman kicked Mother Earth, and The Advent banged as always with their hard beats and acid in the Cyberpunk. Overall the music provided was excellent. There was the obvious few hoytee toytee DJ's that needed to be reminded that all men are equal if ya get what I mean. There was also the addition of 2 VIP rooms, which were totally crazy with the maddest variety of people wandering in and out, but I'd have to say the Fetish girls were an approving attraction, gangs of them walking around in items that only the kinkiest of minds could have created and only left the imagination to create the rest!! The only remaining aspect of the evening that has gone unmentioned is the amazing lights and lazers, back drops and bits & bobs, that added to the nights spectacular extravaganza of visualization and sound. What more could be said, much, hold this space. Article and photos by Mati Parks. HYSTERIA EAR BLASTER 9 - SANCTUARY - 211095. I'd heard good reports about the last Hysteria at the Sanctuary, and after seeing the wicked line ups in arenas 1 and 2, I'd decided I'd definitely check out this event. We got in nice and easily thanks to the security, and went swiftly into the main arena. Although it was only 11 pm Kenny Ken already had the crowd moving. After listening to a sample of Kens top class selection we moved into arena 2 to check out Brockie & MC 5ive 0, I certainly wasn't dissapointed as Brockie dropped tune after tune and 5ive 0 got the place jumpin. From the balcony overlooking the main arena I could see that this rave catered to those who like hardcore aswell as the junglists, as the happy ravers went mad to the sounds of DJ Dougal. In terms of production this rave was top class. The lights were amazing and the system was loud ! This added to a line up which included some top names in both hardcore and jungle such as Hype, Randall, Dougal, Vibes and the one and only Mickey Finn (Wicked set), all came together to create a night to remember. So if you missed this one don't miss the next on Jan 20th. Shouts to Syze, Phake, MC Tone, DJ Donny, Cybele, Reagan, Norbert, MC Chemistry and the man with the camera Tristan by Simon. ROAST - ISLAND - 14TH OCT. We arrived at the Island at about 11, received a quick search from friendly security and got straight into the main arena. Nikki Blackmarket was droppin some wicked tunes and Stevie Hyper D was getting the place jumpin. The main arena was already crowded and filling up all the time. This was the first time I had been to the Island and I was impressed by the venue. There is a big dance floor and an upstairs chillout area with room for everyone. The system was loud and the lights were amazing. The night just got better and better with DJ's like Ron, SL, Jumpin Jack Frost and Grooverider all droppin some wicked sets. After Hyper D there was a selection of Kool FM's finest MC's including 5ive 0, Moose, Navigator and Det, each one of them performed well and kept the crowd hyper all night long. Overall, this was an amazing event. The tunes, the MC's, the mixing and the production were all incredible, so if you missed this one check out the christmas party on the 16th Dec. Amir, Sam, Dave, Elmo, Cosmo and Rob by Simon. Pure X - Sanctuary - The first thing that I must say about this event is that for the size of the crowd the atmosphere was the complete bollox, well worth the £25 that I had to pay on the door. Arriving at approximately 10:30pm the queue was only small and so was the amount of people in the main arena which I found a bit dissapointing, but I just took it that there were plenty more still to arrive . I must admit that I was wrong I have never seen the Sanctuary this empty before which was a bit of a shame because the music was the best. I have got to say that Mickey Finn's set just blew me away, he played the wickedest tunes and you could see the appreciation the crowd had for him, he was backed by MC's GQ, Bass man and Prince (who I had to mention as I had never heard of him before) until then and think he's pretty good. The set up as with every Pure X event was well thought out especially the lazers and video backdrops, good dancers too. Other good sets to mention were from Jumpin Jack Frost and of course the only and only Randall who's mixing ability never fails to amaze me. PS I have just got to say how much the security at the Sanctuary get on my nerves, as if your searches weren't thorough enough! Please note that I do not enjoy being watched while going to the loo. This isn't a wind up it's a formal complaint. Sort it out !! Shouts to Olive and Popeye (you know who you are)! and thanks to Tristan, again. by Lucy. World Dance - Lydd - 041195. Saturday the 4th of November, a night I will never forget, my first World Dance ! Having never been to one of these events before and hearing only good reports. We arrived earlier than expected and were practically at the front of the queue by 9 pm with a few thousand people trailing behind. My first impression was 'wow, it's huge' my second was 'it's freezing' but I thought it would warm up later, wrong, to be quite honest it was cold at the start and not much warmer at the end, but that's my only grumble. There were refreshment stalls and fairground rides outside the hangar, and loads of portaloo's which I made a point of visiting at the beginning of the night! Inside I can only say the set up was a marvel, with about 6 globes hanging from the roof and lazers bouncing around all over the show. The night kicked off with the sounds of Ellis Dee and Swane who both played excellently and got the crowd up on their feet from the very beginning with MC Fearless on the mic. Bukem played well not letting anyone take a breather, when Mickey Finn came on playing some tantalising tunes bringing us to a mass crescendo, the stage exploded with fireworks, ear shattering bangs and flame throwers that singed my eyelashes - Amazing! I must now mention the system, kicking, pounding but not quite deafening. Other DJ's that played were Kenny Ken (An old favourite), Dougal, Slipmatt (Who brought us round to a happy vibe) and of course not to forget GQ who kept the masses in a frenzy. Hype concluded the night in his usual great style, and boy what a night it was !! A special mention to Neal, Simon, Paul, Jo, Daniel, Russ, Ravi, Tristan, Tanya and Helen! Interview
QUAYSIDE RECORDS WHEN DID THE LABEL START AND WHY? I started the label in May 1990, I had been DJing for years before this under the name of Mad B and I was the owner of Friends radio. The reason I started Quayside was because I wanted to try and make music and pull away from DJing. I played on numerous big raves Telepathy, World Party, Rapido, Intense, The Garage - Lanzarote, Jungle Clash - Koln Germany plus a few raves in Guernsey. I've not done any DJing here for about 3 years as I like playing abroad as your sets are longer - 3hrs. WHAT WAS THE FIRST RELEASE? The 1st release was Formula 7 "It's not just Ragga". This was my first production as such, it's funny because 6 months after the track came out the tune took off and sold enough for me to get my decks back from the pawn brokers. WHO IS INVOLVED WITH THE RUNNING OF THE LABEL? The label was run by two of us at first but I found it was better for me to do everything. Its been hard and sometimes I feel to give this all up but I believe in my music and so do the punters who go out and support us, that's what keeps me going the faith of the Quayside supporters. WHEN DID YOU FIRST GET A TASTE FOR PRODUCTION? I first got a taste at Bizzy B's studio 5yrs ago, the guy for me is the best and I've got nothing but pure respect for him. TDK is also one of the best new producers to come through the scene, he now needs some recognition but that will come. I've finished my first year at the University of East London where I'm studying music Technology, when I've finished Ill have a B TEC certificate in studio production and engineering. Ill then take a HND and hope to be teaching under privileged kids how to use music equipment in a studio environment. The reason I want to help others is I spent a small fraction of my life behind bars and Id like to try and help others from going this way if possible. WHAT WAS YOU DOING BEFORE THIS? As I said before I was a DJ and still am but I don't play in Britain anymore however this could change in 96'. Ellis Dee said I should never have stopped DJing and its really put a Bee in my bonnet. So watch out 96'. HAVE YOU EVER PA'ED YOURSELF? We've not PA'ed yet but hopefully that should change in 96'. However we did shoot a video for "Dance with me" for BMG music, Germany - that was a buzz for me and Opium. Atmosphere 30

Interview
DO YOU GO FOR A CERTAIN STYLE WITH THE RELEASES ON THE LABEL? When I first started producing there was no stereotyping of music, everything came under the rave banner now you've got Jungle, Intelligent, Hardcore, Techno and House, our music is what I would put in the Intelligent/ Ambient Drum & Bass category. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY INSPIRES YOU MUSICALLY? I'm into some interesting music (Charles Erland, Earl Klugh, Randy Crawford, Weather Report, Anita Baker, Herbie Hancock, James Taylor quartet, George Benson, Alex Reece, Photek, Bizzy B, DJ Zinc, Hype, Goldie, Andy C, Dillinja and Easy Bass) this is just some. Interview
Pugwash first started DJing in early 93' and has been interested in the music since a friend took him to a rave in 1990, at this time he was into Soul and Hip Hop. Shortly after this he had a go on a friends decks and the interest was fueled. "The first place I played was at the Fitness centre and I feel my biggest break to date was playing at the Lazerdrome". When asked what favourite places he likes to play at he replied "I have no faves but I enjoy playing all over the country because it gives me a chance to play different styles of the music". He doesn't mind working with MC's as long as they understand when it is alright to talk and when they should stay quiet, "I have no particular fave MC's as there are too many good ones to mention, but watch out for Floosie G (Kool FM)". Pugwash has been involved in production for about about 2 years and just recently he started up a label with Bizzy B called Joker records, he rates labels Ganja, Ram, Flex, Frontline, B2B, Sub Base, Labello, Section 5 and Dee Jay records. I went on to ask him his views on the music at the moment "It's ruffer than ever, there is all types of music out there, ranging from Jungle to Drum n' Bass to Intelligent. There is a style to suit everyone, all you have to do is find the style that suits you!". His only goal is to give everyone the chance to enjoy the music... Shouts: Kool Family, Jungle Fever Agency, Probe & Sonia, Bizzy & Tash, Hype, Snoop, Andy, Micky, Darren, Rider, Frost, Bryan, Roni, Krust, Shy, B2B, JJ, Paul, Chris & Leon Music Hse, Harmony, Pascal, Monty, Hardware, Marvin Cain, Sponge, TOV Cru, L Double, Kenny, Stretch, Smokey Joe, Kemi, Storm, Emma SRD, Jimmy Labello, Dan Sub Base, Section 5, Blackmarket, Lee, Stuart, Danny and the rest of the crew. I have been DJing since 1989 and was inspired by watching and listening to Hip Hop and Acid DJ's between '85 and '89, the first place I played was at a party in Shepherds bush and I feel my break was getting on Kool FM in 1991. The best place to play for me is anywhere that the crowd is having it! I rate some MC's, the ones who listen to the music and the way the DJ works, my personal faves are Rema Dee, Co Gee and MC Gee. Outside of DJing I make music and I used to work in Lucky Spin until it closed down, to date I have had 2 releases 'The Mack' on Dee Jay and 'King Shit' on Intellective with more to be released soon. At the moment on the music side of things I rate Formation, Ganja, Frontline, Trouble on Vinyl, SOUR, Dee Jay, L Double, Phantasy, Pugwash and the Dream Team. My advice to up coming bedroom DJ's would be just try hard and play good music, keep it real! My views on the music at the moment are that is getting more and more progressive with more complicated beats and sounds etc so for me as a DJ and producer it is very exciting, the music is going in many different directions ie Intelligent, Hardstep etc. My only goal would be to make DJing and producing a career for life!! Shouts: Kool FM, Jungle Fever, Dee Jay recs, Trouble on Vinyl, SOUR recs and everyone else involved in keeping the scene alive. Atmosphere 34 Illustrations by Malcolm

LIFTIN' SPIRIT RECORDS Origin Unknown consists of Andy C and Ant Miles from Hornchurch in Essex. Their mission, to explore the potential of Drum and Bass. This is their history so far... In 1990 Ant was working for a recording studio in Dagenham where he first met Andy C bashing away on a drum kit. Later that year Ant needed to borrow a microphone and visited a place where Andy was programming break beats. Knocked over from the energy of the groove, Ant asked if he could assist him to complete the tune for a possible release. Andy agreed and went round to Ant's with the disks. Ant had gained much experience as a sound engineer as well as a musician and had recently constructed his own studio. They found it easy to create together and their first release, entitled 'Turn On' under the alias of Desired State which appeared in Jan 91. Encouraged by Danny Breaks and Winston's reaction in Boogie Times, they started to work on their next 12". Having quickly adapted to the Akai s1000 sampler at Ant's, Andy became more ambitious with production, and together again as Desired State they completed their second release - 'Dance the Dream' which reached No 16 in the national dance chart . In July 92 Andy started Ram Records and released his first solo project 'Sour Mash e.p'. The record did well and enabled Andy to open doors to the live DJ circuit where he started to make many friends & contacts. By 1993, keen to experiment with different angles of the Drum 'n' Bass scene, a new act was devised under the name of Origin Unknown. The style was to incorporate deeper elements and hypnotic grooves. The scene had been labelled as Jungle by the music press who went on to claim it was all finished. Those involved with the Drum and Bass scene refused to recognise

these statements and continued to believe in what they were doing. This attitude helped to create the vibe in the studio from which they created a strange type of track entitled 'Valley of the Shadows' intended as a b side for their second ORIGIN UNKNOWN attempt. With the support of all the major DJs and pirate radio stations such as Kool FM, Pulse FM, Weekend Rush etc, the tune became an important release for the label and from the success that followed, they were invited to remix for many labels such as - Moving Shadow, Sub Base, Reinforced, Ganja, V Recordings, Labello, Frontline and I.Q. In 1994 Ant set up a new label to coincide with Ram. Although a separate company its regarded as the sister label. Liftin' Spirit Record's first release was a collaboration between Ant and DJ Rhythm from Cyndicate FM. Under the name of Higher Sense 'COLD FRESH AIR' did a lot better than expected and resulted with the remix being signed to Moving Shadow. Ant continues to create for Moving Shadow as Higher Sense, and Andy C 's solo releases such as 'Cool Down' and 'Roll On' keep the phones ringing. Desired State's most recent release is entitled 'Goes Around'/'Here and Now' and has remix versions due for release. ORIGIN UNKNOWN remains their main project and its likely they may write a special track for release on Goldie's Metalheads label, as well as collaborating with DJ Randall again in the near future. The next release 'Truly One' will appear early Dec. Their advise on starting up a label would be to contact the M.C.P.S. (dance rep. dept). They can advise you about everything. Also, don't mortgage your soul for over the top equipment, an Atari and a S900 sampler is enough and always believe in yourself, stick with it. Massive shout and total respect to everyone who supports the scene.

Knowing each other from our previous street life. Had you been involved in production before? Yes, producing various styles of music. What inspired you get involved in production? The love and respect for music. Why did you choose to start a label a oppose to working on somebody else's? We dealt with some real idiots in the past so we decided to head out and do our own thing. Where do your influences come from in what you produce now? We draw our influences from great musicians and DJ's from the past and present in all styles of music. Does your DJing take priority over your production? No way production always comes first. What DJ's promote your tunes on dub? Fabio, Ray Keith and Grooverider. How do you think the scene is progressing musically? Very well indeed it's becoming more challenging and more musical, it's starting to educate and open peoples minds to a totally new form of music. Have you worked for any other labels? Creative Source, Dread Recordings, Basement Records and Vinyl Solution. You've just started a new label called Vibes can you tell us a bit about this? What other labels and producers do you rate and why? Too many to mention really, we give credit to all labels and producers because we know it's damn hard job that they are doing so respect to all. Have you any projects forthcoming? Were always working so yes we've got a lot of new projects on the horizon so you'll have to keep your ears to the ground for them. What goals would you like yourselves or the label to reach? On a personal level we'd most like to strive for the nearest you can get to perfection as producers. As a label the goal is to bring forth a group of totally talented artists who's recordings will progress and display the future and stability of the breakbeat sound. Interview
Full Cycle records introduce new signings D.N.A to the jungle massive on Dec 18the with their debut single also entitled D.N.A. Production duo DJ Die (age 23 from Bristol) and Bill Riley (age 21 from London) have been close friends since teenage skating days and have both been producing music for several years. DJ Die has been in the Full Cycle camp since its origins, collaborating with Roni Size tracks such as the classic 'Music Box' and '11:55'. Bill Riley's debut solo 12' is 'The Chill' due to be released at the beginning of january. D.N.A can be found on the Radio 1 spin off album '1 in the Jungle' and is currently being promoted on plate by Randall, Jumping Jack Frost and Roni Size. WHAT IS D.N.A ALL ABOUT? It's about myself and Die sitting infront of Cu Base and rolling it out. WHERE DID THE NAME COME FROM? It's fundamental, the basics of everything. HOW DID YOU MEET? We met in Bristol skating way back, and have been friends ever since. WHEN AND HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN DJING AND PRODUCING? Die: I started making music in '89 with a guy called Jodey under the name of 'Tru Funk'. We began making Hip Hop and moved through to House, Rave and some early Jungle. A split from them in '91 got me into DJing, playing at free parties and later on 'Universe', which is where I met Roni and got back into the producing side of things. Bill Riley: In '94 I got a job for a bit helping out in a friends studio. In exchange he let me use the equipment there and taught me the basics, that's when I got a taste for it. Last year I decided to go to College in London so I could get a loan and get some equipment. I had no intention of staying but I managed to get onto a Music Technology course, which is what I am doing now. WHAT ARE YOU DOING AT THE MOMENT? Bill Riley: I've just started work on a D.N.A album, also a solo project called 'Digital Landscape'. Die: I'm working on projects for Full Cycle and Dope Dragon also material for the 'Talking LOud' album, I'm trying to build up my DJing aswell. DO YOU FIND THE DISTANCE BETWEEN YOU A PROBLEM? Yeh it's hard to find time to work together with a hundred miles between us but we've both got our own studios so we just send each other ideas to work on. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? Future Funk. WHO ARE YOU INFLUENCED BY? Die: Many different people old and new. But in Jungle: Bukem, Goldie, Wax Doctor and Dillinja to name a few. Also Fresh 4 and Smith and Mighty. Bill Riley: Too many to mention, I try to listen to all types of music and how different people are dropping it. When I was young I used to listen to a lot of Funk and Rare Groove, I suppose there is an element of that in my music. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? Bill Riley: Getting out to clubs where I know I'm gonna' be hearing the freshest tunes, clubs like 'Blue Note' and 'Speed'. Die: Going out and watching people dance, hearing my tunes on a big system. A change of environment is always refreshing , I like the festival vibes. WHAT SORT OF VIBE DO YOU HOPE YOUR MUSIC WILL CREATE? A deep one basically, whatever comes naturally. HAVE YOU ANY PROJECTS LINED UP? Die: Roni and I are going to continue our Jazzy mission under the name of 'Scorpio'. Also watch out for Camanchi and collaborations with DJ Suv, I'm going to bring in some live musicians too. Bill Riley: Our D.N.A release in December, also my solo project 12' called 'Future Funk' and 'The Chill', both to be released in January on Full Cycle. 'Open your minds and listen!'

Name: Nikki C Age: 24 Lives: Outside London What gave you the inspiration to DJ? I became interested in DJing just through loving music. What music were you into before? Soul, Rap and Chicago House. When did you start mixing? In 1991 when I went to a radio station called Destiny FM (which became Eruption). Where have you played and what have been your fave events? Jungle Mania, Explosive, Desert Storm, Club Jungle, Telepathy, Future / Energy, Club Arruba, Institute - Birmingham, Planet Earth. My fave event was my birthday at Club Jungle. What would you describe as the style of music you play? My set is mainly hard drum & bass, I like tracks that are creative and carry some weight. What do you enjoy most about DJing? Getting positive feed back from a crowd. Have you ever played on radio? Yes, Destiny, Eruption and Weekend Rush. I have also guested on Pressure FM. Have you made any tunes, if not any plans to? I have just finished a track with DJ Spika of Siamese Minds which is due for release in February, I am currently working on tracks with PSG from Kool FM too. Do you find it harder getting work as a female? Yes & No! Yes because there is a lack of female DJ's on the circuit, and no because some promoters knowing that you want work try to take advantage of the situation and mix business with pleasure. Any words to aspiring female mixers? If you have an interest then pursue it! You must believe in yourself and enjoy what you do regardless of what it is. What DJ's do you rate? Randall for his tightness and style in mixing, Andy C for the tunes he produces and plays, DJ Rap for how far she has got, DJ Hype and Devious D, I rate a lot of DJ's really. Shouts? VKF, Siamese minds and the Dartford crew, PSG, Flex and De Underground crew, Andy C, Shaun - Explosive, Daz & Jeff - Splash, Sid - Basement, Marvellous Cain, DJ Legacy, Emma - Vogue, Lance - Vinyl, Phil - Future Vinyl, DJ Madness & Cut Throat - Canada, Roy - Global, JBL - Arruba, Weekend Rush crew, Frenzic, Wacko, Aubury - Cash 2, Khrazz G - 2 Rude recs, DJ Karm, Cheryl @ Triangle Music, Zen Arcade N16. Interview
DESIRE PROFILE Welcome to part 2 of the Desire profile where Phil & Mick continue to tell us their story....... How did you meet M Fact (The person who airbrushes the front of your flyers)? We put on a party in 1989 in Petticoat lane, East London. He came along with a friend of ours. He had such a good time that he got on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend and they are now happily married. Do you intend to spread out and do parties other than in London and Milton Keynes? Yes, we have already held parties in other areas such as Cambridge and Stevenage. We will be putting on parties in other areas next year but ideally we would like to take 'Desire' abroad, we are always on the look out for new venues especially unusual ones. We would love to put one on in an old castle or an ancient atmospheric Stonehengeish type of venue. What are your favourite venues and why? Kelsey Kerridge in Cambridge was a good venue it was big and clean. Bagleys film studios in Kings Cross is another good venue it has lots of different rooms with plenty of character but to answer your question we like all the venues we have held parties in or we would not hold parties in them. PARTTWO What would be the ideal venue for you? The ideal venue I suppose would have to have at least 4 big rooms that held 1500 to 2000 people each. With no noise restrictions so we could have it fuck off loud. With a big outside area so people could chill out or go on funfair rides, it would have to have a large chill out room with lots of comfortable chairs and settees but we could go on and on really. If you could change one thing about the scene what would it be and why? All the pettyness and internal squabbling and back stabbing amongst certain promoters. There is enough to go round for us all to earn a living, we should all communicate with each other more instead of slagging each other off. At the start of the House scene the music wasn't segregated as it is now, do you think there will ever be a time when this could happen again? Yes we think the time is coming for that to happen again. Megadog recently held a party at the Brixton academy and they were playing House, Trance, Techno, Jungle all in the same room, it was an excellent party, respect to the Megadog crew for that. Let's hope there is more of that in the future. Music is music if it makes you move dance to it! How do you feel the music and the scene is going at the moment? The scene is very healthy Atmosphere 58

at the moment and there are some excellent parties going on at the moment, most of the promoters in all the various musical forms are giving good value for money parties with good production. As for the music it's just getting better and better whether it be Drum 'n' Bass, Techno, House, Happy Hardcore etc the music being produced is just getting better all the time. The scene will always survive if there are promoters putting on good safe raves with good production. Which is the case at the moment, we feel the music and the scene have never been better. What about the Criminal Justice Bill? What about it! No seriously we would have to be here for hours to give you our view on this particular subject. But to put in a few word 'Big brother wants his cut'. Have you any merchandise forthcoming? Yes we are busy working on a new range of merchandise at the moment. At the moment we have MA1's and MA2's for sale and a very good range of record bags but we are getting together a catalogue for the spring, but we can't say too much cause it's a bit hush hush at the moment. Shouts: To all the Desire massive for their fantastic support. All the DJ's, MC's and artists we have worked with. Interview
KEMISTRY & STORM... KEMI & STORM HAVE KNOWN EACH OTHER FOR ABOUT 12 YRS and are originally from Northamptonshire. Before becoming involved in music Kemistry was a make up artists and Storm a Therapy Radiographer. Their main influences were listening to Fabio and Grooverider at Rage and Top Buzz at the Eclipse in Coventry. They first started mixing about 3½ years ago when they got some decks, 5 months later they were playing on a local radio Touchdown FM they then went on to play on Defection FM and soon after were picked up by Groove Connection to manage their bookings. OVER THE LAST YEAR WE HAVE EXPERIENCED lots of different places and we always enjoy playing wherever, but our favourites have to be Innovation at the Paradise club & Camden Palace, Metalheadz @ the Blue Note (Sunday Sessions), Voodoo Magic @ Equinox, Phar Out in Glasgow, Notting hill Carnival for Confusion sound and Speed @ the Mars bar but our most special date has to be at the legendary Heaven 'A night of Rage', it was Goldie's album launch party and we played alongside Doc Scott, Fabio & Grooverider - a dream come true indeed. We look forward to the imminent return of Lazerdrome & respects to Desire and Dreamscape. Our favourites abroad were Canada. We played just outside Montreal at a rave called 'The Joint' promoted by Aaron, Oliver, Christa and Ben. The event was excellent and we were certainly made to feel welcome by our hosts, Germany the Toaster club Berlin, Cool promoter, Totally cool city, Cool people, Cool event, a most enjoyable time had. And the Palace, Paris - after party for Goldies last european tour date. This journey was made most exciting, due to the fact that ourselves and our travelling companions ran it hard through La Chunnel courtesy of Eurostar. We made it in time to catch Goldie's performance - very impressive. At the party afterwards we played alongside Doc Scott & Peshay, Cleveland Watkiss on the mic with MC Flux, Moving Shadow crew, Reinforced and the Inta Natty crew made sure the evening was a success. THE CANADIAN AND EUROPEAN SCENE'S are quite similar, they are both still in the early stages, they are like we were maybe 2 years ago, but that's because many of them are not aware of the history of Drum 'n' Bass. A lot of them came in at General Levi and they don't realise there were years of the music evolving and mutating beforehand, but the fact that this has alerted peoples interest to the whole spectrum of Drum 'n' Bass is great. The people abroad are very open minded and are really getting into the music. It won't be long before they have there own solid scene and use their own producers & DJ's although we think they'll always look to Great Britain for inspiration. We met Goldie in 1990 in a shoe shop in Camden we persuaded him to come to Rage at Heaven with us as he'd never been to a rave before. He didn't like it the first time, but then he went back, heard Fabio and Grooverider play, something clicked in his head and he was hooked, so remember kids never speak to strange men in shoe shops. Doc Scott was brought round to our flat one evening as a surprise, we were quite overcome by the presence of such a legendary producer in our flat but we managed to take a polaroid of him before he left to put up on our 'Wall of fame'. We got to know Doc really well after that. WE BECAME INVOLVED IN METALHEADZ at the beginning of the year. We had always considered ourselves to be Metalhead DJ's, promoting the music wherever we played, so taking an active role in the running of the label seemed the next logical step. Metalheadz was about to relaunch, and as the demand for the label rose rapidly a couple more people were needed on board. So now we take care of press and PR for all the artists on the label and work closely with Vinyl Distribution to make sure our release schedule is kept on target, although there are always unavoidable hitches. We receive enthusiastic enquiries about Metalheadz from all over the world, unusual places like South Africa and Bulgaria and we try and keep them informed about the label and the scene in general. We run the mailing list and have the most stressful task of getting test presses to the right people. THE FUTURE IS LOOKING VERY BRIGHT FOR THE HEADZ we aim to keep our integrity. We have some exciting ideas for the club, and plenty of track action from the artists. Look out for 'Razor's edge' our new in house remix label to be launched in January, and there's plenty more in the pipeline - watch this space. We'd like to thank everyone involved with Metalheadz, Jay @ Atmosphere, Christian - our label manager, and the whole scene for making '95 very memorable. Atmosphere 70
