Interview
SPLASH UNDERCOVER AGENT PROFILE Name: Daz Age: 26 Lives: Grays, Essex. When did you first become involved in production? The first track I worked on was a track called 'Ruffer' with a DJ known as Just Jones, it was engineered by Darren at the Hilltop and this was 4 years ago. Due to a holiday at Her Majesty's Pleasure the track never came out but when I got released I revamped the tune and that was Splash 001. What music was you into before Jungle? Hip Hop, Rare Breakbeats, Dub, Deephouse and Hardtrance. When did you start taking an interest in the music? When I started hearing tunes by A Guy Called Gerald using breaks instead of 909 kick drums. Also tracks like 'The Trojan', 'Dirty Games', 'Prophecy', 'We are ie' also tunes by SUAD and Mike West. What labels have you worked for to date? Splash, Juice, Dee Jay, Suburban Base and IQ. Have you done any remix work for any other labels? Labello, Tommy Boy, Renk, Droppin Science and I will be starting remixes for Liftin Spirits and InTouch records. Where did the names Splash and Undercover Agent come from? They just sounded good at the time. Do you DJ and if so does production take priority to it? The last time I played out was at Jungle Dawn on New Years eve. But I would like to get back into DJing just so I can promote my own prototypes and get an accurate reaction, but for the time being 24-7 in the studio. Is there any set style you look to create when writing a track? I always like to step it out in a hard and dubby style with plenty of twist up breaks and a big fat B line. Where do you get your influences from musically? Jah Shaka, Mad Proffessor, Saxon Sound, Burnad Purdie, Bob James, Mike Dunn, James Brown and The Orb. Atmosphere 6

Interview
How do you think the scene is progressing musically? Its very refreshing to hear producers like Alex Reece and the Wax Doctor making tunes with plenty of feeling. Metalheadz recently did a live gig at Glastonbury, do you think the music could move into a more live feel? Its a natural progression. What DJ's promote your tunes on dub? Randall, Dr S Gachet, Micky Finn, Andy C, Trace, Cool Hand Flex, Kenny Ken, Swift and Tonic. How long do you leave your tracks on dub for? All depends on the tune usually about 5 weeks then we get test presses. What other Labels / Producers do you rate? Trace, Danny Breaks, Dillinja, Roni Size, Krust, Ant Miles, Andy C, L Double, Goldie, Cool Hand Flex, Ray Keith and DJ SS. Shouts? Interview
NED RYDER WE CAUGHT UP WITH ONE OF THE MIDLANDS LEADING DJ'S ON THE CIRCUIT FROM WOLVERHAMPTON. NED TALKS ABOUT HIS RECENT DJING IN TORONTO, CANADA. ALSO ABOUT THE JUNGLE SCENE AND THE MUSIC IN ENGLAND. How long have you been DJing? I've been DJing about 5 years, compared to most DJ's that's a short period, however, I've been into the music scene since day 1, I've been playing House since it began really (What I called House then !). So I suppose it goes back to that saying 'I used to be into House'. So what gave you the inspiration to become a DJ? It's funny really because from the age of about 10 up to the age of 18 I was studying Classical music, and the way I switched into a different groove of music in the 86' era was unreal, I was buying all these records and had nothing to play them on, so eventually bought the equipment just to do tapes and so on. It was about 90' I heard people like Grooverider, Fabio and Sasha each DJ had their own personal quality, but it must be said that the 1st DJ that most if not all from the Midlands heard from London was Mickey Finn. I remember going to the Hummingbird in B'ham those days and dancing to his sets, that's why he has the upmost respect in the Midlands, especially B'ham & W'hampton. So really it is just the different qualities that each DJ would have ie: Mixing, the type of music they played, and the ability to take you on a journey through their music, I don't think anyone can take that away from Fabio & Grooverider. So in your view how has the scene changed as far as the DJ's and the music is concerned? Well yes the DJ's that wanted to play House have gone, and their followers with them as well, causing this split. DJ's such as Mickey Finn, Jack Frost, Grooverider, Fabio & many more they are still here, they haven't gone anywhere, what they have done is pushed the music whilst it's been changing, our scenes just progressed while the House scene hasn't really moved anywhere. What I hear some House DJ's play today I was either playing that music 3/4 years ago or listening to some of the DJ's today that were playing it. And they think it's new music, What a joke ! The magazines were there too slagging off the Drum + Bass saying it was dying, giving it as much bad publicity as they could, now look at them you would have thought that we had their full approval from day 1. The music and the DJ's are coming from far, most have had there fair share of hardship they rolled the beats out in various parts of the country, DJ's like Kenny Ken, Randall, Bryan G, Ray Keith, Grooverider, Rap, Fabio, Frost showed them how it's done, and now Joe Public can come and see what's really running. Technology has enabled our producers to go one step further, thus creating new sounds. Just because the music changed, people have this concept that everything's new. So really the scene hasn't changed that much, it's just the various phrases we may use, ie Jungle. You have just come back from playing in Canada, how did they take to Jungle out there? Canada or Toronto have had many DJ's over there already ie Kenny Ken, Jack Frost, Randall and many others, it was good to be following in these guys footsteps, and to be the only DJ from England, made it even more exciting. Plus I was coming from the North. Jungle is still a new word in Toronto Canada, CANADA Atmosphere 12

Interview
however, it must be said, it has peaked, and is still peaking. When people are saying that Drum + Bass is dying they want to go over to Canada and give me their opinion, play 'The Bass too Dark', and then play Alex Reece's 'Pulp Fiction', you would get almost the same reaction - meaning the way they appreciate the different styles of music (Jungle). What we have to remember is that, it's still new to them, They are still going through the learning process. I remember being warned not to play a 'safe set', playing a safe set would be the easy way out I suppose, because if you walk into a venue where you are hearing Trance/House before you are due to play it confuses you slightly, and if you are the only Jungle DJ about to play you can't really watch the crowd and figure out what they will be into, because they are not dancing to Jungle, it was a case of using your own instincts and experience to pull you through. And it worked giving them a mixture of everything from Lemon D, Dillinja, L Double, Bizzy B and some V recordings stuff, their appreciation was overwhelming, the response and the way they knew how to have a good time. I remember at one point 'Warning' remix was on and a few guys were at the front banging the stage shouting for a rewind, they went crazy but the plates kept jumping so I looked at him with a sort of frown then he looked at me, he stopped jumping, at this point he thought I was gonna have a massive fit or get dark on him, I laughed, then he realised I was laughing, then I rewound the tune then he started laughing and they just went crazy after that, so yes it has this buzz about it and the atmosphere they create is ecstatic. I now can see why Kenny Ken loves it out there and they have great admiration for him as well, put it like this if you are a DJ and you have no intention of coming with anything new to Canada then basically they don't rate you at all, they want to hear fresh music coming straight from England. It must be said they have 2 Jungle DJs out there Mystical Influence and DJ Snipper and they are pushing the Drum + Bass in a very good way, however they do oppose many problems in obtaining records from England because not many people take them seriously, if we want the music to survive in these parts of the country the music must hit the streets - Flex, Formation and Basement records are now helping them out. So finally Ned where does Jungle and it's music go from here? and what are your future plans? I just hope we don't see another split, where we have certain DJ's playing the more harder side of the music and other DJs playing what the media call 'Intelligent' Jungle, if we do we are not helping the scene one bit instead were causing what I call 'music politics'. It's just a pity that there are a lot of people out there who put a lot of pressure on DJ's which is uncalled for, if a DJ's into his sound that he is playing we should at least try and understand what's the DJ's message by playing that type of music, I said before I only hope it does progress, DJ's have responsibilities, promoters have that responsibility as well, because lets face it, it's the promoters who book the DJ's and the DJ's dictate the music, so if a promoter is booking 6 DJ's all of the same style of music week in week out you're causing a split just by not booking other DJ's with a different feel of music, therefore the crowd cannot become educated with a different form of music because they have been led up a path by DJ's who have just given them either the Harder side of Jungle or the softer side of the music ie 'Hardstep' or 'Ambient' call it what you want. Quite a lot of the good music is brushed aside and is not being played in our clubs enough, I personally feel this is wrong and the question is who is to blame for this, is it the DJ's / Promoters / Producers. I wonder. As for my future plans just to continue what I believe in: that's to push whatever music I play until it is properly accepted. I have plans to do House sets abroad as well as Jungle in Paris, Canada, Germany and Amsterdam but for the time being I'm off to Huddersfield for a short period (Studio time). Shouts - Julia + Ammie (I think that's Lincoln), Lemon D, L Double, Dillinja, Goldie, Bizzy B, Kemistry + Storm, Essence of Aura, DJ Unique, DJ Biggs, Bassman (The Dark one), Lennie, Ace, Scarlet, Mystical Influence, DJ Snipper (Toronto), DJ Ruffcut, DJ Fury (Chicago), BA Ellis and crew, all the B2B and Quest crew and finally Da Intalex records and Bryan G. Club One Nation - Sat 8th July Rhythm Station. We started the long haul at 9.30 and arrived at 11pm. There was no queue and security was nice, tight and polite. The first thing that grabbed us was the excellent layout of the venue - The dancing platforms, lightshow and lazers, position of the DJ stand and the crystal clear sound system. We walked in on Ash attack who played a good selection of Drum + Bass. DJ Cool Hand Flex followed and played a solid set. Next up was the one and only Dr S Gachet who rinsed and kept the crowd jumping, an absolutely T for Tremendous set from a DJ who is playing out of his skin at the moment. After that vinyl assault, Andy C stepped up and smashed up the whole damn venue and just edged it over Gachet as the best set of the night (big up the Andy C). Jungle don the DJ Ron played a tough set. Following was the man like Marvellous Cain who none of us had ever seen play out before but ripped it up. Darren Jay ruffed it up in fine style and kept the place bubbling neatly. Last set of the night was from a female DJ Wildchild (who wasn't on the flyer) but kept the crowd firin to the very end. MC's on the night were Rude Bwoy Monty and the lively, exceptional MC Fearless with spot on timing and quick rhyming (what a wicked MC). Overall this was a wicked night out in an exceptional venue so for the hard step, drum + bass lovers who don't mind a trek, this club you've got to check. Reviewed by Matt, Ziggy & Dean. Shouts to Rude Dog Elz, Johnny B, Frenzic, Stu for the tow and last but not least One Nation for putting on a wicked night. Club Jungle - Every Friday - Vogue Sittingbourne - Kent. This night is being run by the people that brought you Jungle Soundclash at the Roller Express. The club runs from 10 - 8am and has resident DJ's on rotation such as Rap, Nikki Blk Mkt, Kenny Ken, Kane, Devious D and others plus a whole host of local DJ's spinning Drum + Bass every week. On the night that I went there was myself, UK Fresh, Kane, Kenny Ken and a few others providing the vibe The club itself holds about 7 - 800 people. and when I went I arrived at about 11pm and by about 1am the club was quite jammed , there is also a garden as well but I didn't look for it so I cant tell you anything about that but needless to say. I would recommend Club Jungle for a nice little friday night party. Evolution VII - 150795 - Sanctuary. The last event that I had been to at the Sanctuary had been wicked, so I had high expectations of both the event and the venue. We had no trouble getting a parking space right next to the Sanctuary and got in quickly thanks to safe security. Although we had missed most of the hardcore section of the night, we caught a few nice tunes before Mickey Finn came on with his usual wicked set. The crowd was reasonably large for a venue of this size, but there was still a good atmosphere. Grooverider followed

dropping wicked tunes although the mixing wasn't quite up to his usual high standards. DJ SS dropped a good set and kept the crowd moving. Swane played from 12 till 1, finishing off the night with a nice set. It was obvious from the crowd that Evolution was aimed at younger ravers (14 and above), and while it would've been a good introduction to the scene for all the young people there, I thought that finishing at 1 was a bit of a joke. Overall, good tunes, good lights and a fairly loud system added up to a good night. Well done Evolution. Shouts to Tristan, MC Tone, Carlo, Tim, Jay, Phake, Size, Laz, Pheks, C+E all the rest of Kilburn crew by Simon (Review krew 95). Hysteria - Sanctuary. Yes, Yes, once again we were on a mission up to Milton Keynes, stormin up the M1 on one of many coaches, for myself it was the first time I was to go up there without a car but if you've been by train you don't want to make that walk it is bad news. So I thought I would pay a tenner and not have the worry of driving, but when the coach is almost an hour late screwing is no the word to describe how vexed I was. Enough of that, we got to Hysteria and entered the 100K arena. Now I'm no expert but my bass speakers at home sounded better, I'm sorry but something was definitely wrong. I don't want to put Hysteria on a downer, because some of the DJ's, Micky Finn that night especially, were kicking arse, but with a small crowd by Sanctuary standards my crew were not enjoying the good points too easily. Hysteria crowd, respect, your safe and those of you who were there I hope you had a proper time of it. The DJ's both Happy & D + B played well, but with that sound system you must be joking. The lighting was good and the stage on this occasion was set up on the left hand side of the venue. Arena 1 as I mentioned was a mixture of Happy and Jungle with DJ's Sy and Finn raising the roof respectively. Arena 2 I found sometimes stole the show with a talented line up, but one day that floor is going to collapse. Anyway what do we say about Hysteria, average is what we say. Until I see ya it goes out to Tristan, Cosmo, Brooke hall massive, E London crew, all the sexy dancers, Hybrid and all the Cloud Nine crew and coach massive. PS Sanctuary security sort yourselves out!! Desert Storm - 300695 - Lazerdrome. Be warned Desert storm is X rated, and what I mean by X rated is that it hits a ten for musical style. No other Jungle rave I have been to apart from AWOL, Innersense and Desire compares. To say that we were treated to a dubplate extravaganza is putting it mildly with 17 of the ruffest and tuffest rude bwoy DJ's. Not 1 DJ gave the crowd rest and the crowd loved them for it with enough lighter's being lit to create a new oil field and so many horns that I thought a nuclear bomb had exploded. To give you some idea of the night here are the DJ's Grooverider, Ron, Randall, Kenny Ken, Darren Jay, Brockie, Ray Keith, Trace, Nicky BM, Flex. Kemi + Storm, Manpi Swift and Tonic with MC's GQ, Rema-Dee, Sandy & Det in 2 arenas. The venue was like always a booming Lazerdrome bassline, but also some of that London attitude rubbish, does it mean because you are from London that you have to look at everyone going past with a screwface ! Anyway throughout the night I couldn't fault any of the DJ's but Grooverider did it for me. It goes out to Tristan, Cosmo, Plaistow massive, all the girls we have met, Neil, Charlie, Simon and all the Camberwell church rd massive - respect. By Carlo Renaldi (Review Krew). night it looked like we were in for. The flyer promised 'The best of both worlds' with a massive outdoor arena to provide a slightly less chaotic place to go when a breather was needed from the massive indoor warehouse. Outside there were many mad attractions from the classic fair rides and refreshment stalls to gravity machines and space stimulators. And for those who wanted to have it there were the top names of 4 Beat, Techno and Jungle. In the main arena Brisk played his usual stompy set (But why so early ?). Also playing was Dougal, Vibes, Grooverider, Fabio, Slipmatt and Seduction to name a few and not forgetting the 'Scratchmaster' Sy who definitely lived up to his name for his set. Upstairs in the Technodrome the line up looked equally as rough with Clarkee and Easygroove already pushing the crowd that little bit further, unfortunately I never got to go in this arena because of the permanent queues as the security ensured a 'One in, One out' policy once the room had filled out. I would have been dissapointed if I had gone to this event especially for the Techno drome. The system boomed out an 80k system as the Sanctuary knows how and no expense was spared to ensure that the usual display was of the highest degree. There was also a massive lazer system which really got the crowd rocking as well as added delights like Roboscans to make you look twice, and an array of hightech strobes. The security in the Sanctuary are renowned for making it's presence known. Fair enough there is a job to be done, but is it really necesary to have them peering over the toilet while your answering the call of nature. But all in all Helter Skelter was up to it's usual high standard and more, a definite must for all those who haven't been and see you at the next one to all those who made the night what it was. Shouts Tristan, Rise and Shine, All the Croydon massive and all the NW London crew. by Natalie Le Mare. TRIBAL DANCE AT PARADISE CLUB - FRIDAYS After wading through London traffic we arrived around about 11pm. Our entry to the Paradise club was a warm and friendly one from security where we just breezed past with not much of a queue or hassle. The layout was medium sized, downstairs had a House & Garage chill out room and upstairs was the Jungle room which was split into two parts with a stage. The vibe was purely smiley faces everywhere you looked. As the place started filling up, pumpin out the choons on a perfect sound system was DJ Synchronise who got it warmed up with plenty selection of crowd favourites like 'Fire', 'Champion DJ', and 'Girls dem want it', mixing in many of his own taste of heavy darkside and D + B. It is best to get there early because it blows up at 12 am, and fuck me does it blow !! The dancefloor got rammed up good and proper. The club was rinsin out believe !! Everyone was lovin it. Next on the Technics was Pooch who did the business. letting off a set that propelled new standards for 'Up + Comings' - nice one Pooch! We were entertained vocally tonight by MC's Prince and Foxy, who kept the crowd jumping from beginning to end. Foxy went wild with the words and cooked up the mic when Dr S Gachet arrived, Gash sent the crowd wild with some Super brok D + B he got rewind after rewind as the form of Jungle he played was especially devoted to the crowds reaction. Super set Gash ! So I asked myself could this night get better, then came my answer. DJ Randall who set the house on fire, bombarding the massive with X amount of Hardstep missiles, Randall pushed the people to their absolute limits, Randall always tumps out the fattest of sets. All I can say about Tribal Dance at the Paradise club is: The sound was outstanding, The attitude was pure niceness, All the girls tonight were fly and sexy, Cheap prices what more can you ask for ? 'Like a Jedi I shall return'. Maximum inflations 2 Tristan, Cheryl, Cybele, Wisay, Gerald, DJ Magic, Pooch, MC Terrorist, DJ Crazylegs and MC Foxy - Ouch! RAVEALATION & ELEVATION - RAVEDOME - HOUNSLOW. Touched down about midnight and the queue was stretching right along the building. Inside the security were busy making sure everything was kosha (they found the rizla). When they had finished the body search we entered the main arena to find DJ Vibes tearing out the happy sounds, the

place was looking busy. The sound system and the lights were full on and MC Sharky had the happy crew bubbling. Next up was DJ Joey G with MC's JJ + Micro keeping up the pressure, Fabio came in roughing up the crowd with yours truly, excellent set always a crowd pleaser. The PA's on the night first up was MC MC versus Stevie Hyper D 'Get pon the floor'. Tune is absolutely rolling (look out for Riders plate) great stage show, 2 hooligans with canisters burning down the place and dancers in the background. Big up the clemey and the Black Town crew - Nuff respect. DJ Raps PA was also really good, sending out a shout to Smiler and the other dancers good show. Rap continued to DJ until she was relieved - Good set. The place was boiling by now and I had to retire to the chill out zone located outside at the back, big up to DJ TRansit who had the House head bobbing in the House room at the back of the hall, overall the night was wicked, big up to all the DJ's Grooverider, Stevie Hyper, MC MC, Funki, Richie + Jackie, Bolton, Annette and Justin and all the Hastings massive. Shout to Derek B the original hooligan and the lads you know who! Carlo, Tristan by Micro. Exposure - Tuesdays - Options, Kingston. Exposure bean on the 4th July and has been running every Tuesday since. Arriving at Options nightclub your'e welcomed by the up + coming sounds of Funky T, ITN and Little D, offering a wide selection from Hardstep to melodic Drum + Bass. Also presenting the likes of Fabio, Grooverider, Ray Keith, Kenny Ken, Randall, Hype and Frost. The club has a central dance floor onlooking the stage where you can find the DJ's, if sanding and gazing is your thing there's plenty of space to do this with raised balconies incorporating the bars, this gives plenty of space to chill out, there's also a big VIP bar. Despite it being on a Tuesday night it has a wekend atmosphere, the people are definitely there for the music and dancing (Not anything else). So if you don't normally venture out week days this is definately one to check out. Running from 9-2 it's well worth the £5 entrance fee, respect to Des and kevin, all Exposure crew, all DJ's and MC's, Tristan, Cybele, Carlo by Vince (Review krew). Hijack - Sat 5th Aug - Paradise club. Leaving the Sub Zero camp at about 9.30pm we headed sharply uptown to the Paradise club once again, on arrival at the club about an hour later I noticed no queue at all for the first time I had ever seen here. After a brief search we entered the downstairs room which too was playing Jungle tonight, we grabbed a brew or two and waited for the people to arrive. We then moved upstairs to listen to the sounds of SL, the place soon started to fill and with the arrival of 5ive 0 and Navigator Hi jack was soon hotting up. Next on was Brockie playing enuff ruff selections shortly joined by Andy C to give out some bad B2B business and for me the best set of the night. Then came Dark Angel who I had never heard before but kept things running nicely whilst awaiting Devious D who too played a good set and with Kenny Ken on last for the night the Paradise to us was still looking good, could have been a few more people but stil a wicked night. Big Up to Hi Jack crew, Frenzic, Sub Zero 106.4 FM by Shakhan and MC Sniper. United Dance - Stevenage Leisure Centre - 11 Aug. This was the 9th United Dance party held at Stevenage and also without a doubt he best yet. Celebrating the launch of their 2nd album UD are near perfection. I arrived to see a very Atmosphere 24

large queue which was to be expected as this event was not to be missed. The security were friendly as usual and were doing their best to get people in quickly. We just caught the end of Vinylgroover's set, by now th atmosphere was well warmed up amd totally buzzin with happy ravers. Firstly I have never seen such a brilliant and original stage set up. A classical 18th Century stone garden with loads of plants and water fountains on the stage with a staircase going up to th DJ stand, behind the stage was the maddest backdrop I had ever seen at a rave! The line up of DJs in both arena's consisted of mostly the top DJs in England playing some of the newest and best tunes around, respect to Seduction for those wicked dubplates. Unfortunately the only DJ who wasn't there was Grooverider who was in Australia. The whole night was filmed by the BPM crew and was screened on the 19th Aug - bad luck if you missed it! The main type of music played throughout the night was 4 Beat which the crowd loved but after a while it got pretty damn hot in the main aren! So we took a wander outside to the chillout. Mickey Finn and Hype both played later on in the evening and gave everone a chance to slow down a bit and dance to a more mellow Drum & Bass set which broke the evening up just right. Must mention the Dougal and Hixxy PA for which I was right at the front to see, they played an exclusive version of "Toytown" from the forthvoming UD album and from the crowds reaction it's gonna be big. This is one of the best raves around at the moment, an unbelievably friendly atmosphere everytime, I lost count of the amount of people I chatted to, everyone enjoyed it, even Slipmatt stayed aroung after his set and danced in the crowd - We saw Ya! So I recommend going to the next one on the 13th October and rumour has it it's going to be even better. What more can I say!! Last word: At the front of the stage there was a massive fan blowing onto everyone in the crowd near the front, if only more places could do this! Rachael. DESIRE - A MIDSUMMERS NIGHT DREAM - 290795 - SANCTUARY. Whistle posse blow ! Well yet another Desire was upon us at the well known Sanctuary, Milton keynes. I am a Desire nut so don't believe everything I say but even before I start I want to say one thing, Go to the next one ! First of all the venue, after all this time the Sanctuary still needs improvements, for a start the turntables upstairs were constantly jumping causing untold murder to both records and atmosphere, try and sort it out please! Another point which causes me concern is the drinking tap, a trickle of water is just not good enough and with a wait of 30 minutes it's just not right, people need water. With the rave in full swing when I arrived and the queue stretching outside the Sanctuary until 1am, it was sure to be rammed inside. With the atmosphere, lighting and production up to Desire's usual high standards I was looking orward to a good night. Among the attractions on the night were 2 video screens, lazers, backdrops and some of the largest inflateables I have ever seen along with a sound system that could be heard. DJs on the night punching it out were Hype, Randall, Mickey Finn, Rap, JJ Frost, Swane, Andy C, Swift + Zinc plus many more with Grooverider KO'ing the opposition in the main arena and Frenzic in arena 2 respect. With the best of the lyrical rhythms coming from the one and only Stevie Hyper. Well what more can I say about Desire, rough, tough and dangerous with Drum + Bass education in mind, an event to savour and to experience again, hope to see you at the next one, have a good one. A ravers handshake to Tristan, Simon, Cosmo, Tom, Neil, Jo, Charlie, Peckham massive, the 2 Kellys and Steve. PS Wicked set by Flapjack in arena 2

FORCE & THE EVOLUTION Djing somewhere and we've got a PA on, in that case Bert + Hoz usually do the PA's. DO YOU LOOK FOR ANY SET STYLE WHEN WRITING A TRACK? Obviously all of our music is on a Happy tip, although there are now many styles within the 4 Beat banner. We try to cover the lot at the moment whether it is Breakbeat or bouncy Techno, but we are always looking for new ways to move forward. WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INFLUENCES? In the early days we were influenced by groups such as Prodigy, SL 2 & Shades of Rhythm, who were big names at the time, since them we have followed our own style. HOW DO YOU THINK THE HAPPY / 4 BEAT SCENE IS PROGRESSING MUSICALLY? At the moment things seem to be getting a lot more stompy with the kickdrum being at the forefront of the mix. We would say the music has a Techno feel to it but a hard kick drum doesn't make a Techno tune, and anyway a lot of people would be offended if a stompy 4 Beat tune was labelled Techno. As for musically a lot of producers are attempting to give the 4 Beat scene a more professional image by using live vocals and more keyboards, things are certainly moving forward. WHAT DJ'S PROMOTE YOUR TUNES ON DUBS? All of the big names really Slipmatt, Dougal, Sy, Seduction, Brisk - the list goes on although Dubs are never sacred, once you give a DAT WHO DOES FORCE & THE EVOLUTION CONSIST OF? There are 4 of us in total, Paul (Force), Darren (Styles), James (Legal Sub) and Paul (Or Bert + Hoz as they are better known). Darren and Bert both play the keyboards while Paul and Hoz deal with the technical side of things. WHEN DID YOU FIRST BECOME INVOLVED IN PRODUCTION? It all started when Darren went round to Pauls to get tickets for one of the Raven events at Colchester Uni. Paul who was a resident at Oscars knew that Darren played the keyboard and was itching to make a tune. Darren then introduced Paul to Bert & Hoz and together come up with 'Fall down on me', the rest is history. WHEN DID YOU START TAKING AN INTEREST IN THE MUSIC? Darren, Bert & Hoz all had keyboard lessons for a few years and started playing around with dance music while still at school. They started to produce hardcore when they first started raving in 1992. As for Force (the old man of the group) he not involved in the scene back in 89 and was a raver in those days and took an interest in DJing shortly after. WHAT LABELS HAVE YOU WORKED ON? Obviously we've been on Kniteforce since we set out and have had about 5 releases with them. We've also been producing for Slipmatt's Universal label under the name of 'A Sense of Summer' the 1st release being On Top and the 2nd is due out soon called 'Around the World'. HAVE YOU DONE ANY REMIX WORK FOR OTHER LABELS? We've done around 4 remixes. One for Justin Time's 'Sweet in Pocket' DJ Ham's 'Higher' plus one for a band called Active Force and also one for a German label. We've got a couple more lined up one for Just Another Label and one for DJ Slam. WHERE DID THE NAME FORCE & THE EVOLUTION COME FROM? It was fairly simple really. We had the name Evolution for as long as we can remember and when we met Paul we just added his name to it. DO YOU DJ AND IF SO DOES PRODUCTION TAKE PRIORITY TO IT? Two of us play out as Force & Styles, although Bert + Hoz are pretty nifty mixers themselves. As for taking priority over production, the only problems come if we're Atmosphere 32

to one DJ they all seem to have it, we don't mind though guys keep it up. WHICH DJ'S DO YOU RATE? There's only one answer to this question and that's all of them. If you are an up + coming DJ or even a DJ at home then you know how much hard work it is. Add to that the conditions they work under and the travelling these guys do in a night then they all deserve 100% respect. We now come to the time where hopefully we can get a few frustrating problems out of the way. As we mentioned earlier Force & The Evolution consist of 4 people, however when Force & Styles DJ together a lot of promoters seem to believe they are Force & Tha Evolution, infact they are only 2 members of the group. This has caused a number of problems when we have been booked to DJ somewhere and the name Force + Evolution appears on the flyer not Force + Styles. So hopefully now that should all be cleared up. As for Force + Styles we've just set up a new 4 Beat label called UK Dance the 1st release by New Motion AKA Bert + Hoz from Evolution was released in July, the 2nd tune by Force + Styles is due out in Sept with remixes from Slipmatt, Brisk & Dougal. We have also remixed an old track of Dougals called 'Zurich' which is being released on Essential Platinum. Last but not least we have done 2 tracks for Seduction's label Impact - coming soon. DJing wise we have bookings at Dreamscape, Pleasure dome, Club Kinetic, Die Hard & Fubar (Sctlnd). for bookings: 0860 142919. Shouts Slipmott, Dougal, Seduction, Sy, Brisk, Hoxy, Slam, Billy Bunter and all the rest of the DJing crew, Evolution dancers, MC Whitelocks, Chris (UD), Alex (Dance Paradise), all at Kniteforce, The Slammin bo... and last but not least all our mates. Interview
AREA 39 have been involved in the Jungle scene for the last 4 years. They have recently produced tracks for Bear Necessities, Tooz up, a new label called Genetic Stress and their recent track 'Cap Columble' will be launching Roger Johnson's new label very soon. I asked Matt & Joe (alias Area 39 or Nut E 1 or Technarchy) how they got into Drum + Bass, what they were up to and where they thought the scene was progressing. SO, HOW DID YOU START MAKING TUNES? We started making tunes when we were about 15 on a seriously budget Omega computer and we were both into dance at the start of Acid House. We used to go to a lot of legal and illegal raves and slowly became more and more hooked on hard dance music. We worked for a long time without any thoughts of releasing anything until we both got involved in the record business one way or another. We both started DJing around 1990, playing at illegal raves around the country. Nut E 1 carried on to play more seriously. He became resident DJ at London's Lazerdrome and also recently travelled to Cologne in Germany to DJ there. Matt has worked as a sound engineer for the last 4 years with Fokus records, ULR, Kickin recs, Pirate Club, Bear Necessities and Just Another Label and with artists such as Jumping Jack Frost (He engineered the vocal mix of Leviticus). Together we have released several 12' under the name Area 39 and Nut E 1 + Technarchy and also remixed 'Babylon Timewarp' by Intense. Matt has also released singles under the name Phat + Phuturistic and Little Matt (Cos' I'm not big). What have you been up to RECENTLY ? We have just released 2 tracks as Area 39: 'High Flyers' and 'Dark Perswayshun' on Genetic Stress and also a 12' on Tooz Up recs which is out now, plus a remix of 'Every Day' by Sub Sequence. We have also been working on a new album of 12 tracks of more experimental Drum + Bass which is due to be released by Crammed Disks (Belgium) who also run 'Language recs'. All tracks are unreleased although 'Silver Haze' has been licensed to the compilation 'Jungle Heat' by Virgin. 'Silver Haze' is a full vocal meander into a dream - like a subtle, spaced out world of sounds and voices over Drum + Bass. HOW HAVE YOU SEEN THE SCENE PROGRESS? As far as we can see, there has recently been a movement within the scene towards a more subtle form of Drum + Bass, with more emphasis on creative sounds than heavy beats and bassline. The complicated drum patterns are still there but there's more of a groove, more ideas about rhythm and fluidity. Sampling is being used in a more interesting way and is more about creating new sounds from old. We believe the music is becoming more soulful, to allow more room for feeling and self expression. As producers we feel that Drum + Bass holds the best possibilities for experimentation and expanding the mind into the outer reaches of the universe. We strongly feel that if a superior life form from another planet came to earth they would be groovin' to what is being called Drum + Bass (Really?). Watch out for Aphrodite remix of 'Sparkling', original of which appeared on the Artcore compilation on React recs. Atmosphere 36

Slipmatts 4beat reveiw FLOORBURN (DJ BRISK REMIX) - STORMTROOPER - What a stomping mix from the DJ Brisk. Straight in no messing about hardcore wickedness with the Brisk formula of loads of samples, chopped up vocals and interesting layers of riffs and sounds. The kick is hard and the high hats are loud. After the first few bars the vocals are chanting "I think it's time to make the floor burn" which leads straight into the first riff along with kicks and cymbals. Eventually we reach the piano break which comes just at the right moment. The tune builds brilliantly with more vocal chops and another riff arrangement in perfect Brisk style. Watch out for his remix of the UK Dance debut "Looking for love" which is doing dubplate damage at the moment. IMAGINATION - DJ SEDUCTION - IMPACT - Although every Impact tune is good this one is exceptional. The sounds of DJ Seduction at his best with this breakbeat stomper. Some brilliant sybth sounds compliment vocals from and old house tune called "Go Mental". Then come the drums accompanied by some scratches of fresh and vocal stabs. The strings are next matching brilliantly with the vocals in a quick up and down pattern into an uplifting stab riff. Every part of the arrangement is perfect and with good original soundsn and patterns this tune is faultless. This should be massive by the end of the summer. DROP THE BEAT - DJ ERUPTION - UNITED DANCE - A nice simple but effective platter from United Dance records by one of the men behind one of the most happening rave organisations at the moment, DJ Eruption. "Drop the beat" starts with some female vocals into a solid kick with hats and snares then into that popular style off beat stab pattern into a riff occasionally interupted by "Drop the beat" and "Pump that bass". More stabs follow eventually leading into an anatmospheric stringy section designed to raise those hands. Back to the stabs and all tidied up with plenty of wooshy sounds for that proffesional touch. ROCK THIS PLACE - DJ CHEWY - UNIVERSAL - Stereo shots go from side to side in amongst a hard kick and some funky Lyn Collins breakbeat in this new signing to Universal. The percussion builds and is joined by that Techno off stab which leads into a string stab riff which leaps out of the speakers. The tune kicks back in with some bass for extra power which moves swiftly into the stabs again and then a choppy piano section with some familiar vocals. Designed for the dancefloor this definately works well with it's busy arrangement and should be big for Universal. Check out the AA side for a solid Amen breakbeat hands in the air stormer. POWER EVERYBODY - BILLY BUNTER V HAPPY TUNES - HAPPY TUNES - Very different from the usual Happy Tunes material and a bit more techno than Billy Bunter's usual style but an exceedingly good tune anyway. Extremly happy riffs with various vocal samples helped along by on and off beat claps and a heavyweight kick drum. The breakbeat is in there for the extra power aswell as plenty of Billy Bunter style rolls. The tune is mainly a mixture of riffs and various vocals until we reach a Prince section 1/2 way. Although I'm not a Prince fan it does work very well. Back to the rifs and then out, an excellent adventure for Happy Tunes. TAKE IT FROM THE GROOVE - MIDAS - HECTIC - Another happy stomper sure to do the business from VinylGroover and C Grayson from Hectic. The ingredients are all there, A hard kick, Easy breakbeat (from Bobby Byrd), loud stabs and an amazing vocal. The tune starts with a sort of bell sound then builds with drums and strings into an extra loud stab, which is joined by a faded in trancey loop which really gives it that extra touch. After a bassline and more stabs there is a piano line with strings and synth sounds and some vocals which take you all the way. I'm sure this should be as successful as the original Groove Control. Hypes Ripe Selection 1) Remarc - From da hood - Dub - Switching from ragga to gangsta rap Remarc still tears it up. G - Funk noises ,bouncy bass and a mixture of tearout and hardstep drums make this a fave of mine one of many Remarc projects to come. 2) DJ Hype - We must unite - Dub - At a time when clubs + bigger venues around the country are trying to stop Jungle events happening , when people outside and in the scene are saying Jungle is too dark, when everybody thinks they are a gangsta you know it's time for a stand We must unite is the title and if you want the critics of the scene to fuck off then we must unite and show them what Jungle is really about. Remember this is a multi racial, multi classed, no age limit music, that's the beauty and that's why I love this scene so much, anyway this tune is forthcoming on the Ganja / Frontline album due for release later in the year, I know you all like the tune by the response I've been getting when playing it but I hope you're all listening to the words.. 3) Andy C + Ant Miles - Truly one - Dub - This ones a proper roller with a nice powerful bass and snappy breaks, one that kicks off on a big set or when played on the radio, again like We must unite there is a message in there, is this time for positive messages instead of guntalk....maybe. 4) J.B. (P Funk remix) - Back II Life - Dub - Very much on the Set Speed tip, Pascal turns this into a more mellow mix than the original but still manages to keep power there but instead of the power coming through on the breaks the power is on the B line, One for the ladies as they say!! 5) DJ Phantasy - Hardstep to the side - Dub - This one speaks for itself, Hardstep. DJ Phantasy (Ezel) is working very hard launching his new label 'Easy records' and this track amongst many others he has been doing is working hard to put the hard in hardstep. Nice sounds, Tim dog sample + fat bass make this a must Ezel!! P.S. Watch out for the forthcoming album from Myself, Pascal, The Frontline + Ganja records cru called Still Smokin due for release later this year. It will feature brand new tracks and VIP remixes from the Ganja / Frontline cru more info very soon but believe me this wont be a secong rate mash of unheard of shit slapped on vinyl + CD with the best thing being the fuckin cover, It will be a quality project with thought and time spent making it by all involved. So this is DJ Hype saying Peace out !! Interview
DROPPIN SCIENCE NAME: DANNY BREAKS, AGE: 22 WHEN DID YOU FIRST BECOME INVOLVED IN PRODUCTION? I started making demos at the beginning of 1991 on a keyboard sampler and a crappy 4 track tape recorder (With the aid of a pair of turntables and a 909 drum machine). WHAT WERE YOU INVOLVED WITH BEFORE PRODUCTION? Busting moves on turntables, cutting it up and shit. Also school but I guess that doesn't really count. WHEN DID YOU START THE LABEL DROPPIN SCIENCE? I started the label towards the end of 1993. WHAT LABELS HAVE YOU WORKED WITH TO DATE? I started off working with Suburban Base under the name of "Sonz of a loop da loop era", and released a few 12's and a mini album. I also did remix work for Reinforced, Rugged Vinyl, XL and Ram records. Then I started doing the 'Droppin Science' 12's and also remix work for Movin Shadow, Juice, Labello and Suburban Base. WHAT ARTISTS DO YOU CURRENTLY HAVE ON THE LABEL? At the moment "Safari Sounds" from Basildon (Essex) are the only artists I deal with and they've got some dope new shit coming. But there might be some other projects starting soon with some artists that live locally. I have also brought in artists such as Zinc, Undercover Agent, Harmony, Andy C and EZ Rollers to do remix work on the label. HAVE YOU EVER DJ'ED OR PA'ED? Yes but I can't be bothered with the hassle of PA's anymore. It's much easier turning up at a party with a box of records than it is with a van load of equipment. I don't want to be labelled as mellow or aggressive, just as beatz! Atmosphere 58
Page 49

Page 59

Interview
DO YOU GET APPROACHED BY MANY PEOPLE WITH POSSIBLE RELEASES FOR THE LABEL? As I don't give out my address or phone number I don't get any demo's. Droppin Science is mainly for my projects or stuff that I work on with other people. IS THERE A CERTAIN VIBE YOU LOOK FOR WITH RELEASES ON THE LABEL? The main vibe is the beatz with nice or fucked up sounds. Theres never a particular style I don't want to be labelled as mellow or aggressive, just as beatz! As long as there is a cool groove and some dopeness it can run. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY INFLUENCES YOU MUSICALLY? A whole variety of styles but all sort of branching off the B Boy culture (Breakbeats, Grooves and Hip Hop). WHAT GOALS WOULD YOU LIKE TO REACH AS A PRODUCER? I'd like some kid in 20 years time to find one of my tunes and get influenced from it or sample it that is of course if samplers are still around then. WHAT DO YOU SEE AS BEING THE BEST WAY TO PROMOTE YOUR RELEASES? The best way to promote a tune is to make it good!! It doesn't matter how much you spend on promotion, if a tunes wack a tunes wack! WHAT DJ'S DO YOU USE TO PROMOTE YOUR TUNES? At the start of 'Droppin Science' it was always Peshay and LTJ Bukem. Nowadays I'll just check someone with a tune and if they are into it I'll let them run with it. DID YOU FIND IT HARD GETTING RECOGNISED? It wasn't really hard it just took a long time. People are just starting to recognise 'Droppin Science' now but that's cool, I like being able to take my time it's not stressful. ANY FUTURE PROJECTS OR PLANS? At the moment I'm working on some new bits and 'Safari Sounds' have got a couple of 12's ready to go. I've also got some different stuff that's going to be coming out on Mo Wax records. SHOUTS. Maria, Safari Sounds, The Droppin Science kru Stateside: (O.J, Mack Daddy, AK1200, JJ Jellybean, Josh Swissman, Rudy, Kenny & Tanya), Suburban base crew, Daz, Darren & Jeff (Juice), Alex C, Kodwu Eshun, Peshay, James Lavett (Mo Wax), Andy C, Smeg, Slim, Red, Harmony, EZ Rollers, Frenzic, Swift & Zink (Hold up your hand if your a ....), Framer, Roni & Krust, L Double, Phantasy and I'll take the "Easy" way out and say sorry to anyone I've missed. And finally props to everyone that's down with the sound. Atmosphere 59
