Interview
Micky Finn part one The Following is a summary of an interview with the lovely start, Micky Finn, which took place in the cosy home of Aphrodite. DJ name: Micky Finn Real name: Michael Hearn Description of style of music: Mainly drum and bass. My musical background is very flavoured in that I enjoyed a whole different host of music styles when growing up such as The Sex Pistols, Gary Numan, David Bowie, Lou Reed, Visage, Billy Grant, Diana Ross, The Pointer Sisters and others. Now I listen to the likes of R Kelly, Jodeci, some soul and some hip-hop. When asked how he encountered jungle Micky explains: "I think jungle just somehow crept in through the changes that occurred in the scene, from acid house right through to breakbeat and then onto the techno scene. Then as more ragga samples were used, a split occurred between breakbeat and jungle and it moved on from there. I used to play in the techno clubs in Scotland, but as I grew into jungle I found a greater appreciation for it down south. It was an Eric B, Public Enemy and LL Cool J concert that inspired him to start DJ'ing at the age of 19, but what really made him buy decks was the fact that he found it really irritating when DJ's on the radio talk over records. He explains "I thought f&*k that and bought myself some decks, nothing flash just something that I could play my records on, after a while I started f&^king about on it, as you do, one thing lead to another, and this geezer said he'd heard one of my tapes and wanted to book me for a party and I never looked back really. After complaining about the state of his coffee, that Aphrodite had made for him with a facial expression that described to a T the agony that his taste buds were going through, and stating that tea and not coffee was his forte, he goes on to explain that his DJ name came through about through his sister. He was only ever really interested in doing what he enjoyed most which was DJ'ing and so he was not really concerned about the fact that he didn't have a name, however, when it came to writing his name down on a flyer for the Tunnel Club, which his sister used to run, his sister put him down as Micky Thin, on the account of his slimline figure. "She used to call me Skinny bollocks taking the piss, cause I'm skinny." After a while the only thing that changed was the spelling and it stuck. His first break occurred when he bumped into a man in Amsterdam, who had heard one of his tapes and told him that he'd take him up to Birmingham because he could get him work in Birmingham. "I though yeah, yeah, I've heard it all before, but this man really was genuine and I
Page 5

Page 7

Interview
believe that it's Birmingham that made me. A lot of people though at the beginning that I was from the Midlands because I worked up there so much. I was involved in a lot of events that wen on around Derby, Coventry, Birmingham and Nottingham, therefore, I got some recognition from those areas. Some flyers would have stuff like Micky Finn Midland's Finest, then they'd hear me on the phone and realise that I was from London. I owe a lot to Birmingham. His first big break was World Dance in August of '88 "I'd only done a couple of parties and all of a sudden I was put in front of 8,000 people, I though oh shit, but I coped all right." Mickey Finn has played on Kiss and done a live PA recently of 'Arsonist' for Jungle Mania which is an extension of Kiss, and played on a Japanese radio station, but doesn't feel comfortable with it, he goes on to add, "I'm not really a radio person, but for those who can do it good luck to them. I enjoy hearing Grooverider, Randall, Fabio and Kenny, but I feel uneasy communicating with a mic. I work from crowd reaction, and so to the vibe of the people in the place." He then proves this by doing an impression of what Tony Blackburn as a jungle DJ and it ain't pretty, putting his DJ radio voice on, he says, "Hi, I'm Micky Finn and I'm gonna be taking you through the next two hours of smoothy jungle." nuff said. However he really enjoyed the radio shows out in Japan on account of the fact that they weren't live and he was there to do what he does best which is mixing records, Rat Pack was on the mic, so that took a lot of the pressure off him as well as he has never been trained on a mic. "They also took the time out to show me how everything works and the atmosphere was a whole lot more relaxed, even the technicians were jiggling away to tunes." However, with Kiss he was thrown into the deep end with no training. I've been DJ'ing since about '87 or '88. I'm not sure what I'd be doing if I wasn't a jungle DJ. I done a plastering course, but I didn't like it, I prefer being my own boss. I went to glasshouses a couple of times and if it weren't for this, I'm not sure how I'd have got out of the life I was living. I'm glad this came along because it made me appreciate earning my own money. He got sick of it, thought f&@k this and I suppose that's when changes started to come about. His favourite tunes include "A Split Second" and he's got a story to tell about that which involves Belgium and a screwing Micky Finn. But you'll have to tune into Atmosphere's next issue to find out. Also to come included in part two of this interview, Micky Finn talks about what DJ's he rates and his view of some MC's. What he would change about the scene, his motto for life and his understanding of the friction between dark jungle and happy hardcore. Interview by Akrasi, Photograph by Charlie B

Interview
PASCAL & FRONTLINE RECORDS PROFILE Q.WHAT WAS YOU DOING BEFORE? Before this I was in and out of jobs working in warehouses and stuff like that. At this time I was into hip-hop in a big way and I couldn't really get my head round the house music that was around at the time. Q. WHEN WAS THE LABEL STARTED? A. I started Frontline in December '94 after doing Face records for two years. Face records was a joint project between me and Sponge ( IQ Records ). We had quite a bit of success with Johnny Jungle but in the end we just branched off to do our own things. Q. IS THERE ANY SET STYLES FOR YOUR RELEASES ? A. Frontline doesn't have any particular style and we don't pretend to either, we just roll with the times and try to make good music. Q. WHEN DID YOU FIRST BECOME INVOLVED IN PRODUCTION? A. I started in production about five or six years ago doing hip hop tracks with a friend (S.Lewis-RIP) we would just sit my room banging out track after track. And he was right into the stuff I was making and after we had some knockbacks from a couple of labels he said he was going to put the money up to release a 12'' but soon after he passed away and this kind of gave me a push to get on with it. Then after his death I released a record in his memory called The Fubar EP plus then came Bad Influence which led on to going to Metamorphosis and things slowly progressed from there. it's been a real learning progress as every tune I've made has been a stepping stone in making me a better producer although I still feel I have a long way to go. Q. HAVE YOU EVER DJ'ED? A. Before and whilst I was producing I use to DJ I'd spend hours on my decks practising certain scratch techniques and tricks. Nowadays I don't find the time for it anyway. Q. WHERE WOULD LIKE YOU TO SEE THE LABEL IN A YEAR OR SO'S TIME.? A. I would like to see Frontline in a year or so up there with the more well established and respected labels putting out quality tracks and also introducing some more artists. Q. WHAT DJ'S DO YOU USE TO PROMOTE YOUR TUNES ON DUB PLATE? A. To promote our tunes we give them to certain DJ's like Hype, Randall, Brockie, Andy C and Swift. We like to keep the tracks on dub for about two months but we normally let Hype have an exclusive for a while cause as a producer and a label I owe a lot to him (Big up Hype). Q.WHAT OTHER LABELS HAVE YOU WORKED FOR? A. In the past I've done tracks for Metamorphosis, Reinforced (A track on Enforcers 6 under the name of Covert Operations), Ganja and Sub Base who I still work with as Johnny Jungle and have a release coming out soon called Killa Sound with remixes in the pipeline from myself and Krome and Time. Q. AS FAR AS THE STUFF YOU MAKE GOES WHERE DOES YOUR INSPIRATION COME FROM? A. My inspiration comes from all the music around me that I listen to like Hip Hop, Soul, Reggae or what ever. I also get a lot of inspiration from other producers on the scene. Q. WHAT APPEALS TO YOU MOST ABOUT THE MUSIC? A. The thing that I like about this music is that there are no boundaries, you can experiment with anything, there's so many different styles out there plus the fact it's a British thing and were leading the way. The thing I don't like is when people start labelling the music as either Jungle, Hardstep, intelligent, especially when they
Page 7

Page 7

Interview
say intelligent, cause certain people will do a track that has a string intro that goes on for about two years which then goes into a well known break with a bass that consists of two notes. It will continue like this for about another two years and people will call it intelligent. What is intelligent about that? Don't get me wrong I'm not dissing the tracks cause I happen to like them, but what I want to know is, what's intelligent about it? I've recently done a track which has got a good buzz on it and it's on a mellow vibe and I've heard people start calling it ( I ain't saying it again) and I'll be the first to say that it ain't. Q.WHAT OTHER LABELS / PRODUCERS DO YOU RATE? A. The producers I rate are Hype, Goldie, Krome & Time, L Double and Nuff More, but I ain't saying cause they always get the big up. Labels I rate are Ganja for the bad boy jump up business and Metalheads for quality and originality. Q. WHAT ABOUT DJ'S? A. Hype, Randall, Brockie, Andy C, Grooverider and everybody on the circuit doing their thing. Q. WHAT'S NEXT FOR FRONTLINE RECORDS? A. In the pipeline will be a new label which will be a joint project between me and Hypeand a Ganja / Frontline album to be released later this year. The future for Frontline is to hit the places other labels can't reach. Q. WHAT OTHER ARTISTS DO YOU HAVE ON YOUR LABEL? A. We have just Hardware, Rude Bwoy Monty and myself but we are currently looking for others to join. Q. WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR NAME FROM? A My mum. It's my name. SHOUTS TO: Donna, Hype and Snoops, Randall, Brockie, Andy C, Swift, all at Kool FM, Grooverider, Mike & Flex and everyone at De Underground, Goldie, Thomas & Niki, Monty, Dan ( Sub Base), Phantasy, Dave at Buzz records, Nicky and Ray, Ash, Bigga, Krome and Time and Atmosphere. DANCE PARADISE TIFFANY'S SATURDAY 25TH FEBRUARY My first escapade to a Dance Paradise event and I was not disappointed in the slightest. The venue in a word was vast, huge, massive and humungous or was that 4 words. Impressive would be an understatement for this club. Upon entry you're confronted with security who have accents much like Farmer Giles, but none the less friendly and doing their job. The first room we found was the techno room which was hot and full of people on pogo sticks then through a jammed hallway to get to the happy hardcore arena with Ramos playing the 10-11 slot with what seemed like thousands upon thousands of nutty ravers jumping through the roof. Shortly after this we decided we were lost and started to ask everyone where the jungle room was, but no-one knew - had the Martians kidnapped the jungle room or was everyone just blitzed? We were then directed to a small underground passage supposedly leading to the jungle room but oh no it was the house hut, quite small but still ram jammed. We were almost out of supplies then we saw the sign. It shone like the Star of the East and it read "MC's". After ploughing through the huge crowd we finally entered and walked down a small staircase and heard the drums courtesy of Kenny Ken alongside MC Fearless (big shout to Murray on the Alcy), next up was Darren Jay (wicked set) and at this point I've got to mention the tiny amount of attitude in the place. Next up was Mastervibe who replaced Randall and from what I heard played a wicked set. We shifted out about this time due to the 3hr drive we had ahead of us but I would recommend Dance Paradise till the cows come home - wicked. Big up Curt, Dan the driver man, Nyome, and Karen I don't want to leave yet - Where's GQ. ONE NATION-VALENTINE'S PARTY I arrived at the Rocket about 10pm, although I thought I was never going to get to the end of the queue. Once in, it moved quite quickly and before I knew it I was being searched. The security were nice enough. Once in, the place was nearly full, the tunes were coming out loud and the bass going right through me. I put my coat in the cloak room and quickly joined everyone else dancing. There were dancers and two big screens on the stage to watch. this is the second time I'd been to the Rocket, the toilets had improved since the last time I was here - they now have doors! The only security in there seemed to be in the chill out area, but there wasn't any trouble anywhere. After a quick look around I went back to dance where the GrooveRider was stepping up. The place was now rammed. In my opinion his set was the best of the night, setting the standard for Hype and Randall, who followed it nicely. The atmosphere inside the place was brilliant, nobody had a bad attitude because of the fact that was the last night at the Rocket before it closed down for refurbishment. Mickey Finn was the last DJ of the night dropping tunes that kept everyone dancing to the very end. I think Jungle is now proving that there doesn't have to be any bad attitude. Jungle is only played when the right crowds there. Anyway everyone I saw going home looked like they'd had a blinding night. I'll definitely be at the next one. Finally a shout to Linda and the rest of the firm. By Katy Rawlinson Word by Triston: thanks Terry for sorting me out, Wicked night, wicked lights and sound system, the atmosphere was perfect. Thanks to Claire Smart for getting in touch. Respect to the Gezza and Babes dance crew, especially Danny, Kiss to Kelly Brooks ( Your a lovely girl ) and Holly! Respect Jungle crew, Thomas, Norbert, Carlo, Johnson, Kate and all who supported me. JUNGLE FEVER - SAT 18TH MARCH We arrived at the Denbigh leisure complex at about 12.30 and were very lucky to find a place to park the car. We queued for about 1/2 hour outside a shed to get our passes but when we got to the front they had run out, after that we got in quickly through the metal detectors and search and into the main arena. Ive never been to the Sanctuary before but had heard a lot about it all of which was true, the place was massive, hot, rammed + extremely loud (in places). A few said its the loudest its ever been in the Sanctuary , what do they expect its Fever !!! We caught the end of Bryan G's set and then Micky Finn and Darren Jay who all played wicked. It did seem a bit silly only having 4 people working on the bar selling drinks to thousands, serving people in no particular order, survival of

the fittest seemed to be the way, but not as one youth found out as he touched a bar girls elbow she reacted with a hurl of abuse, the youth then retaliated with abuse then calmed down and apologised explaining that he had been waiting for ages, can well beleive it as it took one of the Atmosphere crew 30 minutes to get noticed by bar staff. We then decided to go check out the second arena and found DJ Kane kicking out the rhythm's - totally ruff, big up the MC Gee. We were in the second arena most of the night as it was kooler, popping out occasionally to catch the electrifying atmosphere in the main arena. We caught the end of DJ Ash what we heard was wicked and the crowd seemed to think so too, big up MC Co-Gee bubbling the mic neatly. Pressure - X dropping it ruff as usual on a system yeah yeah. Downstairs Kenny Ken + Randall ruff dub plate selection to which the crowd was going mad. Next up was Brockie and Grooverider - what can I say, yeah man, pity Grooverider wasn't allowed to play his last record respect to MC Moose for trying to rectify the situation, with all the crowd behind him but unfortunately it was not to be .... end of. The MC performance throughout the night had the crowd going totally mad goes out to MC DET, MC Remadee, Ragga twins - Demon Rockers + Flinty Badman,Navigator, Moose + Sive D, Co-Gee, MC Gee ..... nuff credible MC in the place. Last but not least we checked the whole of the drive by show in the hit squad arena 2 goes out to the Tonic + Rema-dee never fail to rock a ting man. Tonics tune on a system ... Bad, Bad, Bad. Goes out to all concerned all DJ + MC's mentioned and unmentioned who brought B - line and lyrics to the Sanctuary. Big up Eastman, Smurf and the atmosphere mag crew, Frenzic, Nyome, Karen with the wheels that got us there.Report by Dark Noise Original and Lady K. DESIRE - THE ISLAND ILFORD - 25TH MARCH Desire, new venue and the queue was buzzing with excitement. This was going to be one to remember. Arrived at the venue at 10pm feeling crisp and fine and ready to brock out. Thought we was going to queue for ages but security had it sorted out and got the people inside nice and quickly. Troubled for ID once again (I wish security would remember my face). Entering the main arena I faced a huge dancefloor and a stage with a no attitude massive jumpin to the sounds of Swift & Zinc. By lam the place was ram jam and the heat was beginning to rise. The enormous seat gallery was a nice chillout area, with a good view of the dance. Showering lazers / Visuals and stage show all at their best. Clear sound system with a booming b - line which in my opinion was louder than the Rocket (Beleive). All's DJ's done a blinding job keeping the massive rocking Darren J, Ray Keith and Randall killed it with nuff ruff dub plates and wicked mixing. MC Rage and Hyper D gave good support throughout the night (where was GQ). The PA from Krome + Timewas a good mix of old and new tunes. After this we went for a bop in the garage room which was bubbling nicely. I found the venue very much like the Astoria (Another sweat box), nice one 2000ad productions. The flyer never lies, next Desire 29th April at the Sanctuary. Shouts to Scotty, The little man with the beard, Toby Tanner, Matt (nice shirt mate), the lady with the fan and Sexy Sue. Maximun respect the little guy from the Bill. DREAM 6 - 18TH FEBRUARY This was to be my first time ever at the club (Labyrinth) and I didn't know what to expect. (My main concern was getting from the car to the queue without getting attacked or mugged as Dalston isn't exactly a safe part of London, fortunately fate was on my side). I was in the venue within minutes thanks to security, after being searched I was on my way to explore the club and find out what Dream was all about. Arena I was already packed out with happy ravers going absolutely mental to tunes like SMD 4 and Music so Wonderful. The dancefloor and stage looked like they were about to give way due to all the stomping Fromage crew. But I have to admit the atmosphere was absolutely T for tremendous, there was no attitude anywhere and that is the way it should be at a rave. Best of the night has to go to DJ Spinback as his tunes consisted mainly of happy hardcore which a lot of DJ's have put in the back of their record collection and forgotten about. MC Twilight and Lively did a wicked job of hyping up the place. The chill out area was outdoor in the garden, the tunnel looked rammed but it was only due to people queueing for the cloakroom me being at the wrong end of it I had to queue for well over 30 minutes to put my jacket in (I was not impressed). I then made my way to arena 2, this was two small rooms and it seemed like it was even busier than upstairs, but it was not surprising as the tunes down there were ruff. Usually I would have gone upstairs to hear some happy tunes but I couldn't tear away from the Jungle room all night. The whole arena was booming. The DJ's were ripping up the place playing tunes like "Fire", "The Piano" and of course "Horizons" it was wicked all night long. If you like friendly happy or Jungle raves then for £10 you cant go wrong with Dream. Shouts to Carol, Siobahn, Kyra, Kelly and Peter C the Dreamscape and Reincarnation crew, love, peace and unity by Emma Raymonde. Tristan's shouts - Holly for making my night, her friend Kate, all my crew down in the Jungle room, Respect to Spinback (Your set killed it - wicked). Fiaz and Tom Thumb.

Interview
RAMOS & SUPREME INTERVIEW Supreme WHEN DID YOU FIRST BECOME A DJ? I got my first break around 1993, It was in a club down at Cornwall called the Shire I played a warm up set before Ramos which went down really well. things Progressed from there and I have now played at many other events such as Fusion, Double Dipped, Labyrinth, Die Hard, Oasis, Southern Exposure, Infinity, hanger 13 (Scotland) Carlton Studios (Scotland), Bouncy. I also have dates in Switzerland,Germany, Greece and Australia were I will be playing this summer. HOW DID YOU GET YOUR NAME? MC Marley thought of the name and I just stuck with it. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE MUSIC YOU PLAY? I play various types of music, depending on where I am. I would tend to play more of a stompy techno set in Scotland or in the North but the South Coast I would play a hardcore set with happy Breaks. WHERE DO YOU SHOP? I buy most of my records in Fusion which is in Portsmouth. Most of the good stuff is put by for me. WHO DO YOU RATE? I rate DJs who are individuals trying to be original with their own style and that are not into it for the money. WHAT RECORD LABELS DO YOU RATE? There are many labels I have respect for such as Universal, Just another label, Happy Tunes, Evolution, Dwarf, Terror Trax, Baby Boom, Knightforce and Home Grown these are the labels making the best tunes in my eyes. WHAT ABOUT YOUR RECORD LABELS, HOW DID THEY START AND WHAT ARE THEY? They started in '93 when I believed there was a shortage of good Hardcore coming out people did not know what they were into. Most DJ's were in a mix of playing Jungle and Happy together. This is when I decided to make my own music, pushing hardcore into it's own direction setting the standard. I believe hectic started a new dimension for hardcore and has progressed on to become one of the most consistent labels with artist such as Ramos, Slipmatt + Sy making tunes for and all selling between 3 and 5 thousand and Sunshine remix selling even more, also have a third share in RSR recordings. My partners are Ramos and Sunset Regime, much along the same lines as Hectic pushing out only the very best vinyl. Supreme recordings is the label to look out for. A massive techno tune is due for release by myself, Ramos and Sunset Regime with a Scott Brown remix " NOT TO BE MISSED HOW DO YOU SEE THE HARDCORE SCENE PROGRESSING? I believe the scene has grown from strength to strength with artist making more original tracks using their ideas rather than sampling some Micky mouse Vocal. The clubs are also getting better such as Die Hard, rammed out every week with a good atmosphere, raves such as Dreamscape and Fusion getting around 4,000 into their events with Hardcore pushing more and more underground."Things can only get better". I would like to thank all promoters that have booked me, Chris my partner, Mandy, ruth, mum, Sade, Cathy Ramos & Mary, Sunset Regime, Hixxy, Slipmatt, Billy Bunter, Vinyl Groover, Jammin, Mr Hyde, MC Knight, Druid, Die Hard Crew, Sy & Unknown, everyone supporting the rave scene today all ravers "RESPECT" HECTIC RECORDS DJ Ramos I first started DJ'ing when I was 14 years old at an under 18's club on a Monday night called the Top Ranks which is in Southampton, playing hip hop, electro, early house and the latest chart stuff. I am now 23 years old and playing at all the top raves and clubs in the country and abroad which I started to do in 1990. The first couple of years were hard because I wasn't really known but I stuck with it and it paid off. Also what got me a lot of work was producing records which I do with DJ Supreme and Sunset Regime. Our first track was Crowd Control which was on Hectic Records and it sold well over 5000 copies which is good for your first tune. Since then other tunes we have made are Sunshine, Knightraver, Real Feel, Gotta Believe and many more. We mainly make tracks for Hectic and RSR Records (which myself, DJ Supreme
Page 11

Page 11

Feature
and Sunset Regime own) but also do remixes for other artists and labels such as Slipmatt, Just Another Label, Billy Bunter, Scott Brown and many more. Because of the strength of our tunes on the scene we get a lot of PA work. The PA consists of myself, DJ Supreme, Sunset Regime, MC Marly and a vocalist. After the PA I usually DJ playing music called 4 Beat which is the new version of happy hardcore. I also play stompy techno at certain places. The next Ramos, Supreme and Sunset Regime tune coming out is a bouncy techno tune which is coming out on Supreme Recordings in a full colour cover with Scott Brown from Scotland doing a remix on one side. Future releases on RSR Records are JDS and Fury - Age of Stomp, Sunset Regime - (no title yet), Ramos, Billy Bunter and Sunset Regime - Knightraver (remix) The people I enjoy playing for are Fusion, Dreamscape, Die-Hard, Labyrinth, Dance Paradise and Adrenalin. This year I am going abroad to work in Australia, Greece, Switzerland and Germany. Finally big respects to Rick (Sunset Regime), my personal MC - MC Marly, DJ Supreme, Christian, Honeybee, MC Knight, DJ Hype, Slipmatt, Vinylgroover, Billy Bunter, JAL, DJ Jammin, DJ Sy, Dougal and finally my constant headache DJ Hixx. IT MUST BE HARD WHEN YOU GET A CALL FROM AN IMMATURE AUDIENCE? YOU HAVE TO BEAR IN MIND THERE'S A LISTENING AUDIENCE OUT THERE AND I'M NOT GIVING PEOPLE LIKE THAT NO AMMUNITION. IT'S LIKE WHEN SOMEONE PHONES UP AND SAYS 'ERE WHAT FIVE-0, YOU'RE A WANKER'. WELL I SAY 'THANK YOU', I TAKE THAT AS A COMPLIMENT, I TAKE THAT AS YOU THINK VERY HIGHLY OF ME, AND BASICALLY RUB THEIR REMARKS IN THEIR OWN FACE, AND I SAY LOOK MATE YOU'VE BEEN DISSED, YOU GOT NO SAY, YOU'VE HAD YOUR SAY, NO-ONE CAN HEAR YOU, THEY CAN HEAR ME, BUT THEY CAN'T HEAR YOU. YOU HAVE BEEN DISSED, YOU HAVE NOW BEEN WHAT WE CALL ELIMINATED ZAP LATER! THEY GET MAD NOT ME. MY GIRLFRIEND SAID THE OTHER DAY THAT PEOPLE PROBABLY OFF A FEW WORDS OVER THE MUSIC, SOMETIMES NON-STOP AND SOMETIMES WITH NO RELEVANCE TO WHAT THE MUSIC'S SAYING AT THE TIME? DEFINITELY, SEE IF I WAS A PROMOTER, I WOULD ONLY HIRE PEOPLE WITH CREDIBLE TRACK RECORDS IT'S LIKE WHEN YOU GO TO AN INTERVIEW YOU GOT A CV WITH YOU WITH A CV YOU GOT CREDIT, IF A MANS' COMING IN WITH F*!K ALL THEN HE'S GOT NOTHING HAS HE. WHAT'S HE GOT? BUT IF A MAN COMES IN AND HE'S GOT THIS ON PAPER AND IT LOOKS GOOD, THEN HE'S GOT SOMETHING. SO IN THE SENSE OF BEING A PROMOTER I'D ONLY HIRE PEOPLE WITH CREDIBLE TRACK RECORD. CERTAIN PROMOTERS DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY'RE LOOKING FOR THEN FROM WHAT I'VE HEARD OUT AND ON NUMEROUS RADIO STATIONS. THAT'S BECAUSE THEY'VE GOT THE WRONG CONCEPT. THERE'S A LOT OF DIRTY SHIT THAT GOES ON IN THIS GAME, SUCH AS SOME PROMOTERS DON'T WANT TO PAY MONEY, SOME DON'T WANT TO SEE CERTAIN PEOPLE GET TOO MUCH WORK, THEY SAY LIKE THIS PERSON GETTING TOO MUCH WORK, SHOULD GIVE SOMEONE ELSE A CHANCE BUT IT'S NOT LIKE THAT. I BELIEVE IN GIVING SOMEONE A CHANCE MOST DEFINITELY, BUT THEY SHOULD GIVE THE CREDIBLE PEOPLE A CHANCE, NOT THE ONES WHO JUST WANT TO BE UP THERE FOR THE SUPERSTARDOM, VANITY, FAME AND GIRLS. A PROMOTERS SUPPOSED TO SAY 'EAR WHAT NOW RIGHT', PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE MC NOW. NOW IF YOUR PAYING CLIENTELE ARE COMING IN AND PAYING THEIR MONEY, THEY'RE RAVING AND THE MUSIC'S KICKING AND THE MC AIN'T SAYING JACKSHIT, THE PROMOTERS SUPPOSED TO SAY 'EAR WHAT NOW' RIGHT TAKE THE TIME OUT AND 'EAR WHAT'. IT'S LIKE THIS, WHEN YOU GO SHOPPING YOU GOT HARRODS AND YOU GOT MARKS & SPENCERS AND ALL THE REST, AND AS YOU KNOW THERE IS ONLY ONE HARRODS IN THE WORLD AND CERTAIN MC'S COME IN - LIKE HARRODS, THERE'S ONLY ONE HARRODS, THERE'S ONLY ONE SET ANYWHERE AND ALL THE REST ARE JUST LIKE LITTLE TESCO'S, SAINSBURY'S, LITTLE SAFEWAYS, THAT'S WHAT THEY ARE, AND THEN YOU GOT HARRODS, PEOPLE COME FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD TO GO TO HARRODS. YOU GOT TO GIVE THE CREDIBLE PEOPLE A MC 5IVE-0 INTERVIEW BY DARK NOISE ORIGINAL PHONE UP ON PURPOSE JUST SO THEY CAN HEAR YOU LET OFF, BECAUSE THE TAPES OF YOUR SHOWS ON KOOL HAVE US IN STITCHES, THE WAY YOU DEAL WITH SUCH CALLERS. THAT'S THE WHOLE IDEA, THEY'RE ONLY HELPING ME TO BETTER MY SHOW. GIVE YOU PROPS? YEAH, BETTER MYSELF. IT'S LIKE, PUT IT THIS WAY IF A PERSON SHOULD LISTEN TO ME AND I WAS LIKE CHA....LOTS OF RAGGA LINGUA] THEN YOU'D KNOW I WAS BLACK. YOU HAVE TO UNDERSTAND ITS LIKE WHEN PHONING KOOL FM, WE SAY ADDRESS YOURSELF IN A MATURE ORDERLY MANNER..... HOW WOULD YOU KNOW WHETHER THAT WAS BLACK OR WHITE. YOU WOULDN'T KNOW WOULD YOU. THERE YOU GO, IT'S HOW YOU ADDRESS YOURSELF. I'M NOT ON NO SWELL HEADED TIP, I'M JUST ME AND I'M GRATEFUL FOR WHAT I GOT BUILT THIS SCENE, GIVE US THE POSITION AND STRENGTH TO GO ON AND MAKE SOMETHING OF THIS, MAKE SOMETHING OF OURSELVES, THAT'S EVERYBODY NO MATTER WHAT COLOUR, CLASS OR CREED. THAT SHIT DOESN'T MATTER. WORKING ON RADIO AS A WHOLE IS A LOT OF FUN. IT'S A COMMUNITY THING YOU FEEL THAT GOOD SPIRIT, WHEN PEOPLE PHONE AND SAY YEAH, I THINK YOU'RE DOING A GREAT JOB, AND THAT GIVES THAT CREDIBLE BOOST, MORE DRIVE, SOME DAYS I JUST FEEL WICKED. DO YOU FIND YOUR WORK EASY? NO TYPE OF WORKS EASY AND IN OUR TYPE OF WORK THERE'S NO EXCEPTION. YOU'VE GOT TO BE WITTY QUICK AND ALERT ALL THE TIME. IT'S LIKE THE IMMATURE CALLS YOU CAN EITHER RUSH IN TO IT OR TAKE A STEP BACK AND ADDRESS IT IN THE PROPER MANNER. WE STARTED OFF DOING THIS FOR NOTHING, WORKING LONG HOURS HAVING TO BE HERE AND THERE AND EARNING JACKSHIT, NO-ONE CAN SAY MY WORKS EASY. DO YOU THINK SOME MC'S HAVE GOT IT ALL WRONG, AND THAT IT'S JUST ABOUT RUNNING PART TWO CHANCE, NOT THE PEOPLE TALKING SHIT AND PIRATING SOMEONE ELSE, BECAUSE PEOPLE DON'T RESPECT IT. WHAT IT IS WITH SOME PROMOTERS, THEY THINK THAT CERTAIN CREDIBLE MC'S ARE TOO DEAR, BUT YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE THINKING THAT WAY IF YOU WANT THE BEST YOU PAY FOR THE BEST. YOU WANT SECOND RATE YOU GET SECOND RATE - IT IS AS SIMPLE AS THAT IF YOU'RE A SECOND RATE MC PREPARED TO TAKE SECOND RATE MONEY YOU'RE MANIPULATING THE SYSTEM. TAKING THE PISS, TAKING LIBERTIES, AND THAT'S WHY PEOPLE DON'T HIRE PEOPLE LIKE ME, BUT DO YOU REALLY THINK I GIVE A F*K, I KNOW MY WORK, RIGHT FOR WHAT THEY WANNA PAY ME, I KNOW I'M PULLING IN A CROWD WORTH MUCH MORE THAN THAT, AND I KNOW THAT IF YOU ASK THE GENERAL PUBLIC, THEY'LL SAY I'M WORTH MUCH MORE THAN SOME OF THE SHIT THEY PAY. THE GENERAL PUBLIC WOULD SAY CHA, THEY'RE

WORTH F@!NG CONTRACTS, THOUSANDS THEY'RE WORTH, SO ALL I GOT TO SAY IS ALL OF THEM PROMOTERS - FIX UP. DO YOU THINK CERTAIN WANNA BE MC'S JUST LEARN OTHER MC'S LYRICS AND REEL THEM OFF IN DIFFERENT ORDERS, AND THAT'S IT THERE'S AN MC AND DO YOU THINK THEY SHOULD? NO, IT'S A LANGUAGE SPOKEN BY PEOPLE WHO UNDERSTAND WHAT'S GOING ON IN THE MUSIC AT THE TIME, AND NOT JUST A BOOK OF SENTENCES. NOTHING WRONG WITH WRITING LYRICS IF THEY'RE YOUR OWN, IF A MAN REELED OFF ANOTHER MAN'S LYRICS WITHOUT RESPECT FOR THEM IN AMERICA, BASICALLY THEY'D GET SHOT. WOULD YOU WALK INTO A RAVE WITH A BOOK? WHO ME (DEEP SHOCK) THERE'S MY BOOK (POINTING TO HIS HEAD TOP). IT'S THE MUSIC AND THE VIBE THAT TELLS ME WHAT TO SAY. SO WHAT'S COMING OUT OF YOUR MOUTH IS YOU? THAT'S RIGHT. THAT'S ME, THAT'S MY SOUL, THAT'S MY SPIRIT. I PUT A LOT OF RESPECT OUT TO MOOSE WHOSE HELPED ME A LOT WITH MY MC'ING, TAKEN THE TIME TO HELP ME LEARN ABOUT CERTAIN ASPECTS OF MC'ING. IT'S NOT JUST LIKE GOING UP THERE JUMPING ON THE MIC. THERE'S CERTAIN MC'S WHO SHOULDN'T BE MC'S OUT THERE DEFINITELY AND I DON'T GIVE A F@K, I'M SAYING IT, I'M FIVE-O AND THIS IS 1995 AND I'M SAYING IT RIGHT, AND THERE'S CERTAIN MC'S WHO SHOULDN'T BE OUT THERE I KNOW WHO THEY ARE AND THEY DO TOO. THERE'S SOME GOOD CREDIBLE MC'S OUT THERE AND THEY DON'T GET THE EXPOSURE THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO GET. I'VE LISTENED TO THEM IN MY BEDROOM, ON KOOL AND CERTAIN OTHERS, AND BELIEVE ME, THEY GIVE ME SO MUCH JOKE AND JOY SOME OF THE OTHER MC'S OUT THERE. YOU DON'T KNOW AND I THINK YEAH MAN THEY'RE THE ONE YA WANNA BE DEALING WITH, THE TRUE TO THE GANG ONES WHO DO IT BECAUSE THEY LOVE, AND ARE HUNGRY FOR IT. PERFECT EXAMPLE, MC GEE AT KOOL, HE REMINDS ME OF MYSELF, HE'S HUNGRY, HE'S ALWAYS ON KOOL WHATEVER, HE WILL GO FAR, I CHECK FOR MC GEE NICE SPIRITUAL BROTHER, I TALK ABOUT SPIRITUAL, THAT IS HOW I DEAL WITH MAN, THAT IS HOW I DEAL WITH FELLOW HUMAN BEING ON A SPIRITUAL LEVEL. F@K THE SKIN COLOUR IF A MAN COMES IN AND I CAN'T GET ON THAT LEVEL WITH HIM I CAN'T DEAL WITH HIM. THAT'S HOW I AM. BUT DEFINITELY CERTAIN MC'S NEED TO FIX UP, GO BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD, RIGHT, EASE OFF AND STEP OFF OF THE PIRATING BUSINESS, GET ME. PIRATING, NA MAN, GET OFF OF THAT ESPECIALLY IF YOU'RE NOT AN ORIGINAL MEMBER, YOU GOT THE BLUE PRINT AND YOU GOT THE COUNTER FITS, AND THAT'S HOW IT GOES. WHAT'S YOUR PERCEPTION OF AN MC'S JOB? I FEEL THAT OUR JOB IS TO ENHANCE THE MUSIC. HELP THE MUSIC PROGRESS, AND TEACH PEOPLE ABOUT THE MUSIC, HELP TO COMPLIMENT THE MUSIC, YA NOT UP THERE ON NO SUPERSTARDOM JASON DONOVAN, TAKE THAT TYPE OF SHIT BECAUSE THAT AIN'T RUNNING, IT'S NOT ABOUT THAT, IT'S ABOUT STAYING TRUE TO THE SCENE. HAVE YOU PLAYED ABROAD? YES, FRANCE, DAM AND GERMANY. WHAT MC'S DO YOU RATE TO NAME A FEW? MY SIDE KICK MOOSE, GQ, NAVIGATOR, DEMON, FLINTY, VERY GOOD, NUFF INSPIRATION FROM THEM GUYS, REMADEE, MC GEE, STEVIE HYPER-D, FEARLESS, PSG, DETT, GOLD CHAIN, RYME-TYME, COGEE, TIMES 2, THERE'S A FEW AND UP COMINGS I THINK ARE GOOD TOO. ANY WORDS FOR UP AND COMING MC'S? MAKE SURE YOU'VE GOT A GOOD SPIRITUAL BASE, BECAUSE ALL THIS COULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED WITHOUT GOD'S HELP I WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW THAT, I SAY A PRAYER MORNING AND NIGHT TIME READ A GOOD BIBLE BOOK. DON'T GET ME WRONG, I'M NO BIBLE BASHER, SMOKE MY WEED, DRINK MY BEER BUT ONE DON'T FORGET HIMSELF AND WHERE IT'S ALL COMING FROM. OTHER WORDS - FOR UP AND COMING MC'S DON'T PICK IT UP IF YA CAN'T MANAGE IT, AND BE IN IT FOR THE RIGHT REASONS. FIND YOUR OWN STYLE, IF YOUR CREDIT WORTHY YOU'LL BE HEARD. DEFINITELY. SHOUTS FIRST AND FOREMOST: BIG UP GOD ALMIGHTY. MY MUM AND MY DAD, EVERYBODY WHO'S HELPED TO MAKE THIS SCENE DEFINITELY POSSIBLE, HELPED TO CREATE THIS AND KEEP IT IN A NICE PEACE AND LOVE ASPECT THAT IT'S IN. BIG UP ALL KOOL FM MASSIVE, EASTMAN, SMURF, RON, BROCKIE, SL, GROOVERIDER, BRYAN G, RONI SIZE, DOC SCOTT, JACK FROST, DJ SS, WAX DOCTOR AND ALL WHO'S HELPED TO CONTRIBUTE TO THIS SCENE MAN. I JUST WANNA SEE THIS SCENE PURE AND CLEAN TO ITSELF, I DON'T MEAN THIS ASPECT WHERE PEOPLE THINKING BWOY PURE CLEAN I'M TRYING TO SAY 'BWOY, CLEAN, DRUGSFREE' BECAUSE IT DOESN'T GO LIKE THAT EVER. PURE AND CLEAN OF A CERTAIN ATTITUDE THAT IS NOT REQUIRED AND IS NOT GOING TO BE ENTERTAINED. BIG UP DARK NOISE ORIGINAL FOR THIS INTERVIEW AND FRENZIC, ATMOSPHERE MAGAZINE CREW THANKS FOR HEARING ME, I HAVE TO SAY RESPECT KEEP ON COMING KEEPING THE CAMPAIGN ALIVE. Interview
I started off as a rapper, which is like, I wouldn't class myself as an MC. In those early electro days from like '81 to '83 and then come to 1990 I started MC'ing over the break beats and progressed from there. What other music tastes do you have apart from jungle? All music, my main preferences being hip hop. I like ragga, reggae, I like soul and house, they're my main other influences besides jungle. I like to stress all music, I can sit down and listen to any type of music, and appreciate it, because I think anyone getting into the business should be open minded musically and sit down and appreciate all types of music. A lot of people are so small minded. A lot of people also diss the house scene and house for me is where it all started. Cause I was initially into the house scene in '88 and '89 and then I sort of progressed and from there my mind has always been open musically and I just feel sorry for the people into the jungle scene, who can't listen to a house track and appreciate it, and the people that are into house that can't listen to a jungle track and appreciate it. My MC'ing is mainly influenced by hip-hop and a bit of ragga. I first started MC'ing over jungle when it started coming in really. Because I was already MC'ing before that predominantly over breakbeat and hardcore since day one basically. Any embarrassing moments? Once when I was working at Lazerdrome, I think it was DJ probe coming up, and I was told Nut-E-I was on next. If you've been to Lazerdrome you'll know that the DJ stand is set up high so you can't actually see the DJ up there, so I introduced the set as yeah next up Nut-E-I when it was actually Probe up there and didn't notice for about all of the first tune. Where did you get your name from? From rap days, I was known as MC Ryme and I'm always known for rhyming all the time so gradually when it came to jungle I just got known as MC Ryme Time. Are your lyrics pre-written or freestyle? A bit of both but predominantly freestyle because I don't actually sit down and write lyrics but I will practice lyrics and I've got like a rough lyric in my head which gets mixed up with a bit of freestyle. It is a bit of prewritten but not down on paper, it's like I'll listen to myself on tapes and I'll remember rymes. What mics do you rate? Any mic which is good period because I've gone to a lot of places where they've got a rubbish mic, but to put a name to it Shure SM 58 Cordless. Have you always been with one DJ? Trace is my DJ out and on radio. I am specifically his MC, there is no other DJ that can say I'm his MC. Where did you get your main break as an MC? My first main break I'd say was at Sterns in 1990. I used to do a few sets with Bukem, Dr S Gachet and whoever was there. But London wise the main fat one I done was for Roy Global Explosion in 1991 that was the first rave he done at the Roller, also Kool FM has helped me, in getting work, meeting contacts and also helped me as an MC, to keep skillfully more on the cutting edge. I think when you are just working at raves you kind of lose it a bit, to be on the radio you've got to come with fresh lyrics every week and come with new styles. For me when I first came to Kool FM, there was a lot of good MC's on there, it's like I had to work hard to keep up with the standards and overall I think it has taught me to become a better MC. Do you prefer radio MC'ing or out in front of a crowd? I enjoy MC'ing out just for the fact of there being more people there and there being more of a hyper buzz. When you are on the radio it's hard to work yourself out, when you're in the eyes of the public there's that straight vibe there that you can feed off. As for radio I think it is harder, working up that vibe. But I love it just as much, most of the times it's just me and Trace in the studio and we just get left to do our own thing. But sometimes nuff man comes down and we'll create our own vibes in the studio. Do you find your work easy? I suppose when I do it, it just naturally comes, but it wasn't easy to get to the level of what I am now. Do you think the MC is appreciated as much as he should be? I think the crowd does as much as it should, but I think some DJ's don't appreciate MC's and I think that is down to the MC not working with the DJ. The DJ and MC should be working together, it's like whenever & wherever me and Trace drop it, we're on a level because we've been working it for years. Where as if I'm working with another DJ I have to right pay attention to him and his mixing and work with him and I would hope that he would listen to me. Like when I say pull up or hold the tune, whatever, I think there are a lot of DJ's who don't work with the MC and vice versa. What's your perception of an MC's job? To hype the crowd and work with the DJ. What MC's do you rate to name a few? I like Rema-Dee cause he's good at what he does, he's not really a lyrical MC he's a talking MC. He works with the DJ and has his own individual style, GQ for setting an MC standard worldwide. Dett because he is very talented and has a similar style to me. So I can get to grips with it, it's like a hard style for me anyway, to do those fast lyrics is hard, so I respect him because I know what he does, and it isn't easy. He's also a very talented freestyle as well. Five-O and Moose because they've been there from day one their style is just set standard,
Page 19

Page 19

Interview
it's set standard for other MC's to follow from like 'Roast' days, as far as jungle MC's go really, Five-D and Moose were there from day one, I respect them for that. I respect Navigator and the Ragga Twins (Demon Rockers and Bad Man Flinty) because as far as chatting ragga goes those three are the best. I rate Stevie Hyper D using fast lyrical style which I say is hard so I respect him for that and he's a south side boy so respect Stevie Hyper. Too many to mention but big up all Kool FM MC's. Do you stress some things on the mic and avoid others? Yeah I do, I wouldn't say I stress it, though I just chat about what I know, big up the sensi and all things I know, love and see. At the same time I won't talk about silly things or swear on the mic whatever I say it's got to be intelligent and have meaning - no stressing. What do you think of other MC's biting yours or other MC's lyrics? Personally it ain't my problem. I look at it as they've got the problem in the fact that they need to bite my lyrics in the first place. A biter MC always gets made to look the fool in the end, any MC that bite's is just dissing himself and if caught, gets pulled up. Any words for up and coming MC's? Yeah, if you wanna become an up and coming MC it's not a matter of saying I want to be, it's a matter of saying I'm going to be. Put the work in, decide if you really want to be an MC. How you're going to do it - try to get on a pirate, hook up with a DJ and send out some demos and further more put all your motivation into it. Which is the overall key just put all the energy into it keep on going and you'll make it. It's not easy but its a matter of there's too many people who want to get into the business it's not a matter of saying I want to be it's I'm going to be. For me anyway I've had to sacrifice working in a normal job just so I can break into the scene and its taken me years of like just going out and working for nothing. That in itself was hard. You've got to be in it for love. I didn't get into this for money I got into it because I love music. I like to do a profession which I enjoy doing and I chose music not to get rich as long as I'm earning a wage out of it and I can say like yeah that's my job. Have you MC'ed abroad? Yeah, the first was about two years ago in New York with Trace, one of the first to take Jungle out there we played in Pennsylvania as well. After that Amsterdam, Kool FM Party, I also worked in Canada at the Lucky Spin rave which had 4,000 people and was wicked, and I've just come back from Switzerland and what I can say about jungle abroad is that at the moment I'd say there isn't unless it's some tiny unknown country, that hasn't heard jungle. Our scene is just everywhere. America, Canada, Japan, Europe. There's a lot more bookings for DJ's abroad than there ever has been at the moment which should give room to a few up and coming over here. Have you ever made any tunes? I've worked on about three tunes. I've the third I'm working on at the moment. I'm hoping to release the other two. I wasn't really happy with the standard so I didn't release them, Trace played one of them on dub plate but I didn't release the main reason being, my first tune I do release I want to be happy with it. The tune to be released by Ryme Time features his own lyrics look out for that, sorry no clues as to what label it will be on. What labels do you rate? Big up Dee Jay Recordings, Sour Splash, and all labels that's pushing out this music for the right reasons. Big ups DJ Ron, SL, Darren Jay, Budgie, Bryan Gee, Frost, all Philly Blunt and V Records massive, Sour Records, Justin, DJ Swift, all Lucky Spin and Dee Jay Recordings massive. Interview
Boogie Beat Profile The label was started in 1989 by myself (Kid Andy). I did a track of my own and approached a few labels at the time, mentioning no names, and those labels dissed my ideas and music. I put my first track out myself and it worked at the time. I wanted to show those labels that there was room for another label. As the label progressed a year down the line, I was joined by Ben Intellect. We set up the plan to cater for the underground scene as there wasn't enough underground labels at the time. Ben Intellect took care of the engineering and co-producing. At the end of '93 Editman joined as another part of the production crew. We have 45 released to date. The name came from a hip hop show I used to run in 1982 called the Boogie Beat Show. It was the 2nd biggest hip-hop show in London. When the label was set up I have the name as it was known on the street. Our biggest tunes have been Order 2 Move "Rizla Bass", Kinetic Ep "Girl if Ever", Weekend Rush EPs parts 1, 2 & 3, Pain and Baby Stop Spinning Me Around. All these tunes sold between 7,000 and 15,000 copies.. Our artists include Nickle bee, Master Laquar, Baraka, Red Cat & MC Ranger, N.E.D, Editman,Agent 24K, Kinetic, DJ FT and Ben Entellect. Do you think Jungle is becoming commercial is good or bad? There's no such thing as a commercial tune. If a tunes good proplo will buy it and the sales make it cross the track. A lot of people say they wantto stay loyal to the street but once they are approached by a major, money talks. My ambitions are To carry on releasing good queility music. Also in the pipe line, is a big project with other established companies that haven't been done yet. When making your own tunes, how long do they take and where do you get your ideas from? All my ideas come form my past experience of the Hip Hop world and my large record collection. Do you think it's hard for up & coming DJ's / artists today? Yes, it is hard for up & coming DJ's and artists because certain other labels will only sign an act if the name holds a buzz in the street. A lot of other bedroom DJs have got the talent to break into the circuit. I look to give these people a chance as I know what it's like trying to make it. What are your feelings on other labels on the street at the moment? There are a lot of labels putting out good material like Moving Shadow and Back to Basics who are definitely producing quality material. There's also a lot of new labels jumping on the bandwagon putting out shit, which is affecting the labels that were there from day 1 You've now set up your own distribution, why is that? I set up my own distribution because I frrl there's a gap. A lot of labels producinggiid stuff are not getting the right pushbehind their material. Because we've been on the scene for 6 years as a label I feel the distribution will work. What labels are you holding and are any exclusive? The labels we distribute exclusively are Hi Poision records, Ibiza Records, Jungle Maniarecords, Jungle Splash records, Flying Fish records and Rush records, as well as white labels and test jpresses. Is it harder running the distribution than the label? Yes, because you've got to help other labels, keep shops happy and the money's got to be on time to pay the labels we're distributing. What are your plans for the distribution in the future? My plans for the distribution are to take on new dedicated labels producing quality music and a regular output. Do you find it better selling Boogie Beat on your own rather than before? We find it better now as we get to deal with the shops that have been buying the tunes from the label and we are able to build up a good relation. What areas do you cover in yur distribution? We distribute to the whole of the UK and we push all the labels we distribute. Moving back to the label, have you done any P.A's? Yes, plenty of P.A's around the country, just to name a few, Elevatio, Kinetic Club in Swansea, The Rocket and Jungle Book. We also have a German tour in the next month or so. What new releases have you got to come? A new Baraka featuring longsey Dee, Master Lagar featuring DJ FT (hardstep Mix) , Redcat & Mc Ranger, N.E.D " Can't fly like ninja man" and I'm back in the studio doing " baby stop spining me round" drum and bass mix. Weve also just released a CD with 12 of our classic hardcore / jungle tracks in association with N.T.T. Shouts: The station I started on in 1982 S.O.I who gave me my first break. All artists loyal to the label. Ben Intellect for producing some massive tunes, Editman for all the hard work over the past year. Nickel Bee, for your loyalty, Jonny L, dica and the weekend Rush massive, Dezmond and Hype FM, Don FM, kevin at " ard to Beat". Dartford. All crew at Geeza and Babes. Ashford, time is right records. N.T.T. and Prime for exporting the music, just for the beat records, Ibiza masive. All at blackmarket and Unity records crew, Zak and L.W.R massive, DJ Skope, DJ Herb, Charlie powder, DJ J.E.Z and all at Soundvision, plus all the shops and everyone who has supported our music over the past 6 years. Interview
UNITED DANCE PROFILE WHO IS UNITED DANCE? United Dance consists of myself Chris and John (DJ seduction). We also run two record labels, Impact Records and United Dance Recordings. We also have a large crew of behind the scene workers that help with the advertising and distribution. Thanks very much, you know who you are. HOW DID YOU MEET? We met at a World Dance for the first time where we had an argument, but we won't go into that one, as John still insists that I stole his white gloves. Then later on I booked him for an event and we just started helping each other out until both companies joined forces last year. HOW LONG HAS UNITED DANCE BEEN RUNNING? The concept for the organisation started in '93 at that time I was involved in a partnership that put on a couple of successful events, but when Stevenage came up I wanted to do it and the person I was working with didn't, so I did my thing and he did his. WHY WAS THE STEVENAGE VENUE CHOSEN? It was one of several suitable venues I had applied for previously, but the dates I was looking for had been taken by other non rave events, so I had forgotten about it, until the Venue re-approached me again. We then negotiated an exclusive contract with the venue to put on all night events, and five months later the first event occurred. DID YOU FIND IT EASY GETTING A REP? It's not as easy as most people like to think it is, it costs a lot of money to advertise and produce a quality event that will make people come back for more. You have to do a few of these events before you can even give yourself a wage. Reputations have to be built and we always put a lot of effort and time into our events to make sure that our reputation keeps growing. The last three events at Stevenage have been selling out much quicker each time, which shows us that we are starting to get the right formula. WHAT QUALITIES DO YOU THINK MAKE A GOOD PROMOTER? I think anyone that stays in touch with what is going on out there has a better chance of producing a quality event. The best way of doing this is to travel the country up and down as a customer to other people's events. Listen to what they are moaning about and try and give them what they want at your events. Most importantly listen to any moan or gripe that some one has about your events and put it right for the next one. You can't keep everyone happy all the time but you can keep the majority happy if you listen to them. The most successful promoters seem to be the ones that still go out to other peoples events and see what's going on. Basically if you care about the scene and are interested in it this normally reflects in your flyers and events. We try to put an event on that we would like to party at ourselves. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT UP AND COMING DJ'S From the amount of tapes we receive their is obviously a lot of talented bedroom and club DJ's out their, but most of them are caught in a catch 22 situation. We would like to give some of them a break, but people come to our events to see named DJ's that have already proven themselves over a period of time and as most of these DJ's have a lot fresher material to play that is unavailable because it is on Dub exclusively to themselves. So the main DJ's have better material on the whole. However if someone sends us a tape that is exceptional we will go and hear them play live before we let them play at a United Dance basically for our main events you must have had experience playing at club level before we let them loose on our crowds. WHAT IS THE MUSIC POLICY AT YOUR EVENTS? We haven't really got a set music policy, we try to cater for all tastes to break the evening up, although our line ups tend to lean towards uplifting stuff, which we find creates the right vibes that we want for our events. WHAT MUSIC DO YOU PERSONALLY LISTEN TO? Uplifting 4 Beat, Drum + Bass and techno, plus I've also been known to dabble in a bit of Soul/ Jazz funk any music that contains a lot of energy really, except heavy metal, Rock and European chart music. DO YOU HAVE ANY SET RESIDENTS? Our line ups are basically who the paying customers pick through voting on tickets etc... If we listen to our customers we'll always get it right.

Interview
HOW LONG DO YOU SPEND ORGANISING AN EVENT? We like to plan our events up to 10 weeks ahead for example, now we are in March and the April event has sold out, we are getting the flyers ready for our June 16th event. We are also working on much larger events for the end of the year, but that saying, it is hard work getting venues. In the past I've spent up to 4 months working on a project only to see it come to nothing near the end. WHAT DO YOU LIKE AND DISLIKE ABOUT PUTTING ON EVENTS? I like the responses you get from the crowd seeing everyone happy on the night, and all the letters and phone calls we get after the event. It's hard to enjoy an event on the night because at any one time your wanted in 30 different places just constantly running about, and the next morning I feel as though someone has kicked the living shit out of me. WHAT ARE YOUR CURRENT VIEWS ON THE SCENE? The market definitely seems to be expanding I think the media attention Jungle brought to the scene last year attracted a lot of new faces to the scene, although not all of these elements were good but it certainly made a lot more people aware of the underground scene. I think that all the music has improved greatly in the last 12 months and there is a lot more competitiveness amongst producers and competitiveness always inspires quality and genius. I think the scene will continue to flourish this year and keep growing. FUNNY STORIES? There have been several moments in the last 12 months that have particularly funny. One adventure with John and Terry Turbo saw us on mountain bikes with a video camera, 7 O'clock on a Sunday morning and John went flying over the handle bars with the camera, but you would have had to have been there. FUTURE PROJECTS:- Our main ambition or goal is to pull off a large out door event with no expense spared, just for the sheer buzz of it. We are also due to release a United Dance album featuring the best of Impact and United Dance releases plus some exclusive tracks that have only been on Dub Plate, that have been made especially for the album, which will be DJ mixed by Seduction, Sy, Dougal and Vibes ( back 2 back ) and Slipmatt. It will also feature exclusive releases from the above artists. In the past people have licensed tracks from us and I feel they haven't given a true representation of the scene. But this would be the most upfront up to date album designed by the above DJ's. Using material individually picked by each DJ, the album will be entitled 4Beat at its Best and will contain releases from Impact Records, United Dance, SMD, Universal Records, Cheddar Records plus more. The album will be released nationwide at the end of June '95. SHOUTS:- Everyone that supports our events. All DJs, M.Cs and Promoters, Producers and labels there are too many to mention. trax DROPPING SCIENCE 5 - STEP OFF/VOL 2 REMIX Step Off on a-side is in a word phat, mad noises, heavy bass stabs and the step off vocal being chanted throughout take Dropping Science to a new level in my opinion. Funky as F*!k bass and wicked beat editing - this tune is serious. 10/10 DROPPING SCIENCE VOL 1 - REMIX A-side comes courtesy of Zinc of Swift & Zinc fame and in my opinions kills the original dead. Introed with a rollin beat then comes Terrorist style bass with one of them ooh ahh vocals and rubber band basslines, beats just neatly - about midway amen drops and with the addition of the original sample stab makes this mix chunky. 20/10 Harmony's mix on B-side has more of the originals ingredients and emphasises more on the amen which gives it more of a racy feel. Nice new edit as well. 9/10 ST FILES - FLEX RECORDS This label is fast becoming one of my faves and this 12" is one of the reasons why. No track names for this but the a-side comes complete with trumpet riff, deep bass stabs and a drowning funky beat for the first minute or so then it drops to a warped wobbling bassline on a 100% different tip. B-side is stringed out for the intro with stabs of a sort of metal sound then the amen drops like a sledgehammer - pure power this one is so serious with a hint of Dillinja flavour - ruff. 20/10 URBAN SHAKEDOWN - SOME JUSTICE REMIX The more I listen to this the more I like it. The infamous 'Some Justice' has had a '95 workout courtesy of Nookie, wicked mellow intro with clonky beats then your wham bammed in the face with a wicked amen drop and a bassline to match any with occasional vocal stabs from the original classic - ruuff. One the b-side is a slightly mellower number introed with chimes and a burning vocal alongside on obvious Aphrodite edit which accompanied by a teasing type of beats rolls on for about a minute then the bass comes along with plenty of edits and rolls soon to follow is an excellent breakdown with a catchy as hell vocal - one to swap your wall size poster of Pam Anderson for. 10/10 LAYLA - GOTTA FIND LOVE - G-MONEY MIXES - INFERNO A whole lot tuffer than original my fave is b-side supplying you with x-amount of wheel up pressure (only for the wall slappers) what can I say - powerful drums, rollin bass, twisted timestretch and 'Baby if you're out there' vocal being chanted throughout. If you like it tuff, this ones for you. 20/10 FLYNN & FLORA - SILKCUT - INDEPENDENT DEALERS Nice rolling mellow into with a trumpet riff and choppy beat stabs give this one a vibe from the start then a male vocal??? Which drops into a militant workout with stabs of 2 Bad Sister accompanied by chops and edits galore. This is one hell of a groover - don't miss it. 15/10 BABYLON TIMEWRAP '95 REMIX - DURBAN POISON - MR MEN The original being a fave of mine I was chuffed to hear this. Containing the same ingredients as before but ruffed up '95 style eerie string for intro with "Simply Rudebwoy" vocal and the other one which I can't understand with reggae style stabs groove this out until joined by amen chopped and edited with a basic but effective bassline making this a powerful track with a lot of potential - ruff. 9/10 INTALEKTIVE - MAGISTRATE - TELL ME\ MUSIC LOVER A side - Definitely a tune that takes you deep with a rolling tappy breakbeat that seems like it's far off in the distance, nice smooth feel, B lines and drifty vocals wicked Hip Hop style beats in the build up and breaks of the tune. B Side Starts Drifty with rolling bongos into a mad stretched up, twisted up female vocal kickin off into a mash up breakbeat similar to Flatliner. Sure to cause wicked atmospheric conditions where ever dropped 10/10 DNO SKY - JUS JUNGLE - TROUBLE ON VINYL. Starts with jazz strings set out neatly building up and kicking off into the original tappy breakbeat, similar to Roni Sizes Music box. this tune takes you right on a mission from beginning to end. a tune I personally would describe as a" sunday afternoon chill out with a big spliff" type of tune. B Side Just as nice, totally rolling man. 10/10 DNO DJ FLASH - URBAN GORILLA REC - PULP FICTION\ PULP FACT A Side. Starts off Hip Hop to the maximum in the opening breakbeat over wicked floaty strings. an easy does it build up into those very words, then a mental mash up, amen kicks off in all directions. features lyrics from MC Fearless. B Side. Starts off with twisted wobbly dub reggae sirens merging with the dark strings similar to the one used at the start of the Bloodclot art attack. Some sought of Hip Hop feel build up in the opening breakbeat kick in off into Tearin amen with a B line, that I know, puts a smile on any ones face, all complimented by a wicked drifty female vocal. Both tunes let off big time 10/10 RUDE + DEADLY - UNITY RECORDS Firstly let me say getting this tune in my bag was top priority for quite a while, with two different versions one with a bouncy raggary intro and the other with a nice floaty drifty intro both equally as tearin to say the least both kick off into amen that rips up ya speaker box, with dub sirens letting off in all directions deep sounding lyrics "Bring me a dubplate to make me mash dem down" drifty lyrics also that hovering humming B - line everyone loves on a system, yeah yeah 20/10 P - FUNK ERA - FRONTLINE RECORDS Choppy hard cuttin beats proper rollin hip hop flavours all the way smooth B - lines, a few random piano keys arranged wicked with nice smooth female vocal 34

and a hard rap vocal. B - Side is just as nice, flaaaavour !!! 12/10 Watch out for Hypes remix. AUDE BWOY MONTY STEPPAS ANTHEM - FRONTLINE RECORDS Floaty jazzy intro hard cutting slap tappy drums, deep B - lines, soft dub sound lyrics then it kicks off on a rampage with a hard dread bass type B - line. Gets the rewind twice, tried and tested.12/10 B side not for the faint hearted - Check the Wooo Tang. WICKED EVERYTIME - UNITY RECORDS Rollin choppy beats that take you all over the place with some sharp cutting edges, yeah man. Builds up with stretched distant dub vocals and sirens then hold tight the eerie twisted up vocal, dark it out. A funky skank beginning and at the end, flavour just rollin. The other side is probably an even more popular tune with the masses, with the "Wicked Everytime" chat in it, both tunes tearin, 11/10 KEMET RECORDS TRIPLE ALBUM Rec A. Press the buzzer, wicked hip hop cuttin beats to begin with, with a nice skanky riff, which then kicks off into tearin mash up, lets off big time, with lyrics, well man what can I say, just cheeck them out 10/10 Rec B. The Box reopened, Fruit versions, Good Vibes and Vibes out. Ive got so much to say about these theres not enough space all of the above need to be checked out, style after style.10/10 Rec C. Unity, love the way this has been put together really gets the mind workin, I just love these styles, one for the system, stretched twisted out beats among intelligent samples 11/10 Nuff stuff on these 3 wicked peices of plastic, 12 altogether the above being personal faves. SOUND OF THE FUTURE - FORMATION This tune is gonna be bigger than the Empire State Building. Some funky piano intro sounding like some Mafia business followed by some typical Formation beats then it breaks down to "Now all crew you see this tune them wicked for real now hear this one - Lighter". Then the funk - funk - funkiest of baselines comes in guaranteed to get a wheel up everytime 10/10 RUN TINGS AND LIFTIN SPIRITS - COME EASY - SUB BASE Come easy on A side starts off with nice funky beats followed by moaning vocals, nice strings and rollin bass stabs. After about a minute or so this drops into the Come Easy vocal then come the most militant of beats - Pure power all the way, this being a personal fave at the moment with its driving amen and atmospheric strings - ruff 10 / 10. B side is a nice little rollin mellow number - buy on sight. B - JAM - GUNSHOT ME HEAD/RUKAS - NO SMOKING My fave is Rukas on B side which is introd in true gangster style with slowed up hip hop beats slowly working their way up joined by the "Rude bwoy like a shot" vocal rollin out for about a minute, then time stretched vocal dropping into powerful tuffed up drums and the scream from the classic "Radio Babylon" with a warped out b-line to match which twist, bend and edit in all directions, absolutely wicked first release from No Smokin Records - guaranteed to ruff up any dancefloor. B-Side comes with champion sound beats, tip toe basslines and amen of a different flavour - a bit less deep. 10/10 URBAN SHAKEDOWN - ARSONIST The long, long awaited Arsonist featuring the vocal talents of Debo General. Been around on plate since I was a nipper I think but the time to release is going to be 1st May - I TROUBLE ON VINYL RECORDS OUT NOW Gold EP - Just Jungle Sky - Just Jungle FORTHCOMING Very Last Drop • Sky Remixes Antidote EP Here Comes Trouble Vol.II RENEGADE RECORDINGS OUT NOW DJ KANE - Game Over FORTHCOMING Merlin . think!! Aphrodite and Michael Finn have gone to work on this proper. This ones gonna be a classic with its vibe building basslines, chopped but rolling beats and the Arsonist vocals. Flip side has more chatting but its one of those chats that you can understand - a definite jump up winner. 10/10 JONNY L - I WANT YOU - XL RECORDINGS. XL I hear you cry - Yes XL. I don't really like the title track too much but the second track is b-side is tearin apart from the fact that they ripped off Bukem's Logical Progression string. Besides that the man renowned for the '92 classic 'Hurt You So' comes from a new angle (for him anyway) with a deep tearout amen number with doorbell sounds?? and powerful drops - ruff. First track on b-side is also a scorcher with vocals and more strong beats - check HMV for this one!! 9/10 BOO/WATCH THIS REMIX - HARMONY & EXTREME SECTION 5 This being the 9th release from the shop of the same name in Chelsea 'Boo' which has been remixed by the Back 2 Basics Crew, is on some sort of vibe as original steering clear of the infamous amen but still keeping the track bubbling. B-side 'Watch This' has been mixed by Harmony on a much tuffer level than before but keeping style very much the same - rolling with strong rolling amen (not too many edits) ruff. 9/10 STAMINA - DREAM TEAM REMIX - SUB BASE Jump around if you have the stamina remixed by Dream bass & Joker. Both versions getting caned. My fave is joker remix using all of the same ingredients but with a different bassline and tuffer beats - more of a tearer than original but definitely gets thumbs up. 10/10 BASIC PRINCIPLES 'REMIX' - METALHEADS 3 remixes in total both a-side and first track on b-side are on a mellow rolling tip with that wicked deep stab. My fave is second track on b-side which has been remixed by one of my faves Dillinja, introed with the infamous sound but re-arranged slightly with the same funky beats as original, followed by militant but tappy squashed up amen which takes this track to new levels - one to watch. 11/10 HOT FLAME - DJ DEXTROUS & H-PEE - SUBVERSIVE Dex from King of the Jungle fame and his new recruit H-Pee join forces to bring a definite jump up anthem for the summer. Introed with vibey strings and clappy & tappy beats keeping this on a nice level until the 'lighter' vocal comes in followed by a bouncy ragga chat with some beats and a rolling bass, funkin you out all the way, one for the wall slappers. 9/10 VICTORY REMIXES - RYDIM TRACK RECORDS Dex and Teebone get to work on the classic X - Amount crew release. My fave is Teebone's mix on A side which is amened out start to finish with "All Massive" stabs and ingredients from original being put to good use. 8/10 DOPE - BURNING / TRAVELLING - RUGGED VINYL Rugged Vinyl are quite under estimated I think. As usual this release is on a unique tip - keeping it deep with twisted B lines, chopped beats and quality samples steering clear of any amen usage replaced with a well arranged selection of more diverse beats - The message is deep and differentness 8 / 10 FLATLINER REMIX - RAM RECORDS The word on this one is Militant and taking no prisoners keeping on a typical Ran vibe, I could only describe this as powerful and strong with vocal stabs from original and main emphasis being on the drums 9 / 10 DA INTALEX - WHITE Floaty string intro followed by the "Let the music take control" vocals and mellow bass stabs which drop into mass twisted up and edited amen with vocal screams - tuff, tuff 9 / 10.B side is a nice little mellow number with tappy beats and warping bass. MORE ROCKERS - DUB PLATE SELECTION VOL 1 This is an 18 track album from the people that brought you "Your gonna" with different styles with an obvious reggae feel in a lot of the tracks using some nice strings and different beats to usual plus a nice bit of dub, if you're into albums check this. 8/10 CLOUD NINE - SNOW - MOVING SHADOW A-side is introed with a nice and mellow, stringy and piano'e vibe keeping it nice and easy with groovy beats and mellow bassline which drops to pure piano (wicked) then amen, tuff & rolling - one for the masses nothing too heavy. B-side - Jasmine starts with the music box beats and a few edits here and there, wicked jazzy bass comes in next (I'm hooked on this) pure vibe all the way - ruff. This is a man of music. 10/10 JOHNNY JUNGLE This one's my fave at the moment. Militant business hard cutting drums with harsh lyrics and some wicked siren effects letting off all over the place, nice female vocal too. Add to all the flavour already in this tune, Johnny on the rampage. 20/10 121 KINGS ROAD, CHELSEA, LONDON SW3 (INSIDE COMMON MARKET) OPEN MON-SAT 10AM - 7PM Tel : 0171 351 6853 Section5 RECORDS Full range of merchandise Now Available Section 5 Records offer a wide range of white labels, promo's and release copies of all the latest vinyl, keeping you one step ahead of the rest, together with news and information on all future releases, videos and event tickets available through the shop MAIL ORDER SERVICE - Records, Tapes, Video's, Tickets & Merchandise, available around the world. TRADE SECRETS COMPILED BY RONI SIZE PART THREE - BREAKS For someone who doesn't listen to jungle that often comes up to me and says "why do they all use the same break?" Amen Brothers The Amen Brothers Break is not just a break, it is the whole song - for example you could make a whole track by using the amen breaks on its own, and I guarantee if done well the crowds would go wild, it could be a massive hit, you know it could be the tune of 1995; but then again its the Amen Brother break in one of its infinitive combinations chopped up and sliced, revised and filtered and then processed to f*!k. Hmmm. Just like house or techno the main rhythm is kept by the 4/4 bass drum and hi-hats you know, bum-ti, bum-ti, bum-ti. What DJ's call flat beats. Well the Amen Brothers Breaks is the so called flat beat of jungle. It contains the impact and depth needed in a break, with brightness and enthusiasm and rolls with feeling, everything you want from a break. Interview
Jungle has never captured the imagination of scottish clubbers, but with the likes of DJ Kid around, things could soon change... Kid started DJing back in 1988, when he got heavily into Hip Hop. 'At that time I was listening to all the street sounds electro compilations when breakdance was all the rage,' he said, "although no matter how hard I tried I could never do it myself. Everybody I knew could spin on every part of their body, while I stood there with my arms folded." But Kid didn't just sit around and watch other people strut their stuff all day long. At this time he met a guy called David A.K.A DJ Devastate, through the contact column of Rumours magazine, which came free with Hip Hop Electro 16. "He was the first person I met that was into the same music as me". Kid recalled, " I can still remember the first time I went to his house and watched him do little scratches over the tape deck he was playing, which was linked up through a realistic mixer from Tandy, doing the scratching on a normal hifi, and it was amazing. It was at this point that I wanted to become a DJ". At that time Kid was listening to artists like LL Cool J, Schooly D, Eric B, Rakim, Run DMC, Two Live Crew and Public Enemy. " I don't listen to much Hip Hop these days for the simple fact that it has lost it's hard edge over the years, and has developed to more of a laid back style. I've always liked tuff beats, but just because I'm not listening to it these day's, I still buy my copy of Hip Hop collection every month, so I still know what's going on. I will always keep in touch with Hip Hop as its part of my musical roots". Kid can remember when the Scottish rave scene, kicked off back in 1990. He can also remember saying to himself,' I'll never play that Techno shit. "Only about a year later I had my own club, up and running so after a while I was right into techno music, playing stuff on R+S, XLand D Zone". Around this time DJ Tapes were flooding Scotland's record stores from events, south of the border, such as Rage, Raindance, Total Kaos and the biggest selling tapes of the lot, Eclipse, which featured all the top DJ's from England, Like, Grooverider, Fabio, Carl Cox, Top Buzz, Doc Scott and DJ SS. It was from listening to these tapes that I discovered the early sound of breakbeat, which I took to straight away. I was hearing all the breaks from my Hip Hop collection being speeded up with all the Techno riffs etc". At this point kid picked up tunes from labels like shut up and Dance, Ibiza, Chill, Reinforced, Production House, Formation and Phase out, all the Detroit and Belgium techno stuff in his set and continued to play breaks only. He is still puzzled as to why Scotland didn't take to breakbeat very well. " I mean everybody I knew was listening to all these DJ tapes from England, but when it came to listening to the music at clubs, they just didn't enjoy it". Since those days breakbeat evolved through many different changes, until it reach the style it is today which is known as Jungle, drum & bass and more recently hardstep". 'The scene in Scotland is getting a bit stale now". Kid reflected, "the gabba/ techno, hardcore has got as hard and fast as it can get, and clubbers are soon going to be looking for something new. So I think people will start to become more open minded to Jungle'. Kid doesn't get as many gigs in Scotland these day's as he is now branded "That Jungle DJ", but since his first gig in England at Quest in Wolverhampton back in November 92, he has DJ'ed for many clubs and promoters like Quest, Pandemonium, Fantizia, Universe, Dreamscape, Bushdoctor, Club Jungalist, Euphoria and Amizon. However, the gig Kid is recently looking forward to is his first London gig even though people are constantly saying to him that London's no big deal. "It's always been an ambition to me, and will stay an ambition until I play there. My biggest ambitions at the moment are to play for Jungle fever, Roast and Desert Storm, also to play on Kool FM, as well as doing tracks. I've just

Interview
finished my first tune, entitled "If you need me" which I am hoping will get my name up the long dark tunnel, it's hard to get people to notice you in this scene, as there is so much talent trying to break out. As well as England, Kid has also been over to Ireland three times in the last year, and also recently played for Southern Exposure in Wales. He has been the most successful DJ to break out of the Scottish rave scene to date, and his track will be the very first Jungle tune to come out of Scotland. Due to the fact that Kid is based up in Scotland he finds that his phone is his lifeline to the scene down South. "Trying to find out the simplest things, like, who did what tune, can be an absolute nightmare!" he confessed. "I feel very isolated up here, I try to keep in touch with all the promoters, DJs, MCs and everyone I met whilst I was in England over the last two years". Kid will continue to promote the music he loves and will never give up on his home country because 'a small handful of ravers say they do like Jungle, and maybe over time more and more people will get into the Jungle vibe". DJ Kid would like to give shouts out to: DJ Devastate, KMC Ruffcut and Sensis (Scotland's finest selectors) Gez, Carl and Bill (Quest) Anne Marie, Audrey and Theresa (The Quest Dancers). Ned Ryder, Pilgrim, DJ SS, Krome, L Double, DJ Nut Nut, Ant Miles, Sponge, Kenny Ken, Hype, Rob (Rough Tone Records) Mark Kemet, Junior & the Bushdoctor Boyz, Bryan G, JJ Frost, Ascend. Also thanks to all the clubs and promoters who have given me work in the past, and also to Claire Wyburn M8 Magazine Scotland for conducting this interview and also to DJ Frenzic for letting me have the interview in Atmosphere. Final Words, DJ Kid is currently looking for an agent in England who could secure him more. DJ working promoters out there wishing to book should contact him on 01968 674587 or 01374 918024. Interview
WHAT YEAR DID YOU GET THE INSPIRATION TO DJ? I'm 20 years old now, I first got into it when I was 15. Professionally I've been doing it for about 2 1/2 years. WHO GAVE YOU THE INSPIRATION TO DJ? I used to listen to Fantasy FM, Hype, Rap, Krome and Rhythm Doctor. All those guys, I'd say they gave me the inspiration to get into it. WHEN DO YOU THINK YOU GOT NOTICED AS A DJ? I think what's probably given me the most help is Kool FM, but I didn't really check it too deep when I went on there I just sort of sent them a tape. I was on Don FM at the time, and just sort of had a spare tape and I think I just put my name and number on the tape, sent it in the post and I just got lucky. WHAT PROMOTERS HAVE YOU PLAYED FOR TO NAME A FEW? Jungle Fever, Boni - Sound Clash, Moose - Harder They Come and Thunder and Joy. WHAT OTHER MUSIC TASTES DO YOU HAVE? I find it hard to listen to any other type of music as I'm always closely monitoring what's going on in this scene. But I have been getting into a bit of gangster rap recently. I come from a very musical family - my dad's a singer, he's got his own label, my sister's a soul artist and my mum used to sing and my other sister too. YOU SEEM TO DROP IT QUITE DARK. I don't know where that sort of come from, people check me as a dark DJ, I don't really think I am, I like to think of my sets as deep rather than dark. I would just call the music i play musical drum & bass. HAVE YOU PLAYED ABROAD? Not yet, but I have plans to go to Canada with Justin (L/Spin). There was a thing in Paris I was supposed to do a few weeks ago but has been cancelled to a later date and also I'll be playing in Japan all in the near future. DO YOU PREFER RADIO OR OUT IN FRONT OF THE CROWD? I like the radio - when it's good it's very good but you can't beat playing out in front of a crowd that's having it, there's nothing better than that in my eyes. On the radio my MC is MC Gee. ANY EMBARRASSING MOMENTS? Yeah, my first main play out at the Rocket about 2 1/2 years ago, I was playing and there was some girl walking round all night and she had like this plastic PVC outfit and suspenders on and I just wondered what the f !k you are doing in this place, and she came over and started talking to me while I was in the middle of a mix, she's asking me what time I finish. After, I turned back to the decks and picked up the wrong record, I just turned round and shouted 'f•?k off!' I sort of covered it pretty well but it freaked me out because it was my first major event. WHAT DJ'S DO YOU RATE TO NAME A FEW? Randall, my mate Rider, Bryan G. WHAT PRODUCERS DO YOU RATE? Goldie, Roni Size, Ray Keith, Jus' Jungle. WHAT DO YOU FEEL MAKES A GOOD PROMOTER? I don't know what the job involves, but I do know they should pay what they say they're going to pay, not having to argue not to be made to feel like, oh no I've got to go and get the money now. ARE YOU WITH AN AGENCY? The only one I'm with at the moment is Fever Agency Kool FM. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF JUNGLE HITTING THE MAINSTREAM CHARTS? I think if the right people do it the right way, it could be good, but at the moment I haven't really seen anything that works to me that I would be proud to show to the masses. I just think that some of the people that have been involved from the day 1 should get out there and make some money, cause other wise, everyone else will, and half of them don't know a thing about the scene. ANY PLANS FOR THE FUTURE? Yeah I've got about three projects on the go at the moment with various labels, Trouble with Vinyl, Renegade and Sour Recordings. WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR NAME FROM? That is my name. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PLAYING ON KOOL? Nearly two years. HAVE YOU GOT ANY PLANS TO SET UP YOUR OWN LABEL? I've been working on a project recently which is like an adaptation of one of my sisters soul tracks, but I'm not really in a position where I'm able to set myself up at the moment, but I do see this as an on-going thing. There could be quite a few of these tracks and it's a family thing, so I think that we should put it out ourselves. IS THERE ANY SET STYLE TO YOUR RELEASE? No, I try to do a wide selection of styles with originality being very important. I do a lot of research into music when making a new track, you'll get some people that just sit down and listen to last years Jungle tracks and sample off them, my music goes a lot deeper than that. I'll listen to my mum and dad's old records, searching for almost any where for the right sound. ANY WORD FOR THE UP AND COMING? You will only survive if your determined, if it's like the most important thing to you, then it's the only way as there are so many people trying to get into it. As for up and coming producers believe in what you do, no matter what, and no what the label boss says just do what's in your heart. WHO PROMOTES YOUR TUNES ON DUBPLATE? Mainly it's Randall, Brockie, Ron, Hype, Darren J, I also like to have some of the radio guys droppin them. DO YOU HAVE ANY SET TIME WHEN YOUR TUNES GO FROM DUB PLATE TO TEST PRESS TO FINAL RELEASE? No, I just like to sit on them until people start bugging me for it. There isn't any set time, but it doesn't always work like that as I'm finding out. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST TRACK TO DATE? For sales 'slave' and for recognition ' The life' which is my sisters soul track and will be coming out as DJ Kane featuring Vanessa Simon. I've had people from all different corners of the scene coming up and asking about it, people that I have never even spoken to before. The tune is not out yet, there's a few dub's floating about, but it's to be re- mixed down before it's released. HOLD TIGHT FOR THAT. SHOUTS: MC Gee, All Kool Fm crew, all the massive at the pro-motion dance squad and everyone supporting the scene.
